This chapter calls into question two commonplace assumptions that undergird the work of those who study and develop ‘school–community connections’. The first assumption is that there is a generally unidirectional sequence of cause and effect (from home to school) in the relationships between communities/parents and schools. The second is that the primary outcomes of these relationships have greater significance for children than for parents. At the same time, the chapter suggests that these outcomes confirm an emerging strand of thought within the study of contemporary Jewry. This emphasizes the fluidity of adult Jewish identities, even — if not especially — among those who may not have previously been deeply engaged with aspects of Jewish life.

Though a small minority (approximately 1% of the Canadian population), Jews have been important in shaping Canadian culture and identity and have had an open presence in the country since 1760. This paper seeks to provide an historical overview of the immigration and settlement of Jews into Canada and the subsequent growth and development of the community. Using recent Canada census data and local Jewish community studies, it identifies key demographic features of contemporary Jewish life and, where possible, compares this to the United States. The paper paints a picture of Jews as fulfilling the twin promise of Canadian multiculturalism: they have been successful in integrating into larger Canadian society while at the same time retaining a vibrant internal Jewish religion and culture. By outlining current issues and trends in Jewish life in Canada, this work demonstrates the growth and maturation of the Canadian Jewish community. The paper moves beyond the outdated “time-lag” theory in order to explain the more traditional nature of Canadian Jewry compared to the United States. It identifies a range of other historical, political and geographical factors to account for this difference.

Due to the emphasis on "traditional" gender roles, the "nuclear family," procreation and conservative religious values, many gay and lesbian Jews feel a sense of alienation from the Jewish community and develop an ambivalent or conflicted relationship about their own Jewish identity. As a result, gay Jews often struggle to find ways to successfully negotiate their ethno-religious and sexual identities. Based upon in-depth interviews of thirty gay Jewish men in Toronto, this work offers a case study to empirically and theoretically explore the varied experiences of these intersecting identities for this under-studied population. Recent research on other ethnic minority gays and lesbians tend to simplify this question by suggesting that the minority gay individual will simply choose to prioritize one of these identities while repressing the other. Building upon studies of gay Christians that stress more fluid, dynamic and evolving approaches to identity construction, this paper underscores the complexity and variability of this phenomenon as it applies to gay Jews. Funded by the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Education Act, the Mustard Seed Project's major goal T91maoivti1ts was to train teachers to differentiate curricula for gifted students in the general education classroom. This study addressed the changes in classroom practices and the factors that influenced these changes. Changes were measured using the Classroom Instructional Practices Scale Johnsen, 1992). The sample included 1 urban and 5 rural sites, 8 principals, 74 teachers, mentor teachers, and 18 community representatives. Throughout the two years of implementation, majority of teachers at each site made changes. Changes in classroom practices and influencing factors, were determined from interviews, field notes, formal and informal observations, and a final survey. Participants cited staff-development activities, leadership, mentoring, resources, and project support as extremely beneficial.

This chapter has three purposes. The first purpose is to examine the Canadian census instrument in general, and uses of census data for a range of objectives relating to Jews. In particular, this involves a critical analysis of the questions on religion and ethnic origin. The second purpose is to focus on the specific change of method in the 2011 census and local concerns of the leadership of the Canadian Jewish community. In 2011, the questions on religion and ethnic origin were no longer mandatory and were instead posed on a voluntary National Household Survey (NHS). The third purpose is to introduce a “Revised Jewish Definition” as a broader construct for estimating the Canadian Jewish population and to present counts for 2011. This chapter thus updates and explicates the recent treatment of estimates of Canadian Jewish population using the National Household Survey by DellaPergola (2014, pp. 316–318).

The purpose of this work is to identify and discuss those ideological issues which divide Jewish Orthodox opinion today in North America. Using a short 1978 article by Shubert Spero entitled Orthodox Judaism. which identified four major areas of conflict within Orthodoxy, as a starting point, I endeavour to expand upon, verify, and update Spero's findings to the present situation, thus filling an important gap in the sociological literature of North American Orthodox Judaism. Beginning with a historical introduction to Orthodox Judaism and a general discussion of the present sociological composition of North American Orthodoxy, I proceed to devote one short chapter for each of the several issues to be discussed. In conclusion, the seriousness of the divisions within Orthodoxy are assessed in terms of the effect they may have on the total unity and stability of the Orthodox movement in North America.
