Abstract

Background The normal ability to distinguish two points from one is known as the two-point discriminative (2PD) sense. This forms an extremely important assessment in patient with injuries to the nerves distributed to the upper extremity. Objective The aim of this study was to estimate the normal reference values of static 2PD in healthy adults and children. Materials and Methods A total of 624 normal adults comprising 380 men and 244 women were recruited randomly for the study at three different centers. Additionally, 172 healthy children, comprising 110 boys and 62 girls, were studied. Eight sensory areas in the palmar surface of the hand were delineated. The ability to distinguish the static 2PD was estimated in millimeters by using disk discriminator. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results The mean static 2PD in the adult population ranged from 2.78 to 3.5 mm in the fingertips and 5.39 to 7.13 mm in the mid-palm. There was a statistically significant difference between men and women in zones 6, 7, and 8. In children, the observed 2PD values were 2.15 to 3.63 mm in the fingertips and 4.10 to 5.77 mm in the palm. Children have a significantly better 2PD sense when compared with adults. Conclusion The normal value of static 2PD in the palmar surface of the hand among the Indian pediatric and adult populations was established in the study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Strong crosswinds can cause catastrophic accidents like overturning and derailment in extreme circumstances, therefore the train's capacity to tolerate their impacts is crucial. Despite the significance of this issue, there exists a notable research gap in understanding the specific effects of various positions of a high-speed train within a tunnel on its aerodynamic loads and flow structure under different crosswind conditions. To address this gap, numerical simulations were performed using computational fluid dynamics. The crosswind angles (Ψ) were 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60° and the number of coaches exiting the tunnel was one to three coaches, respectively. The incompressible flow around the train was simulated using the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged NavierStokes (URANS) equations in conjunction with the k-epsilon (k-ε) turbulence model. The Reynolds number employed in the simulation was 1.3 x 106, calculated based on the height of the train and the freestream velocity. With regard to aerodynamic performance due to the crosswind, force coefficients such as drag, side, and lift and moment coefficients of rolling, pitching, and yawing were measured. The higher crosswind angles including ψ = 45° and ψ = 60° cases produced the worse results of aerodynamic load coefficients compared to the lower crosswind angles of ψ = 15° and ψ = 30°. For instance, the highest side force coefficient (Cs) was recorded at a crosswind angle of ψ = 45°, with a value of 23.6. Meanwhile, the flow structure revealed that the leading coach of the train experienced intricate flow patterns during crosswinds, characterized by vortices and flow separation. These findings indicate that aerodynamic instabilities can potentially affect the overall performance of the train. Additionally, this increases the risk of derailment or overturning to be high, particularly when the majority of coaches are exiting the tunnel under strong crosswind conditions. Abstract

Dark sectors, consisting of new, light, weakly-coupled particles that do not interact with the known strong, weak, or electromagnetic forces, are a particularly compelling possibility for new physics. Nature may contain numerous dark sectors, each with their own beautiful structure, distinct particles, and forces. This review summarizes the physics motivation for dark sectors and the exciting opportunities for experimental exploration. It is the summary of the Intensity Frontier subgroup "New, Light, Weakly-coupled Particles" of the Community Summer Study 2013 (Snowmass). We discuss axions, which solve the strong CP problem and are an excellent dark matter candidate, and their generalization to axion-like particles. We also review dark photons and other dark-sector particles, including sub-GeV dark matter, which are theoretically natural, provide for dark matter candidates or new dark matter interactions, and could resolve outstanding puzzles in particle and astro-particle physics. In many cases, the exploration of dark sectors can proceed with existing facilities and comparatively modest experiments. A rich, diverse, and low-cost experimental program has been identified that has the potential for one or more game-changing discoveries. Abstract

Using time dependent nonlinear (s-wave scattering length) coupling between the components of a weakly interacting two component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), we show the possibility of matter wave switching (fraction of atoms transfer) between the components via shape changing/intensity redistribution (matter redistribution) soliton interactions. We investigate the exact bright-bright N-soliton solution of an effective one-dimensional (1D) two component BEC by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. In particular, we show that the effective 1D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with time dependent parameters can be transformed into the well known completely integrable Manakov model described by coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger (CNLS) equations by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave functions under certain conditions related to the time dependent parameters. We obtain the one-soliton solution and demonstrate the shape changing/matter redistribution interactions of two and three soliton solutions for the time independent expulsive harmonic trap potential, periodically modulated harmonic trap potential and kink-like modulated harmonic trap potential. Abstract

We study the interaction of dark-bright solitons in two component Bose-Einstein condensates by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. We show that the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be mapped onto the Manakov model. An interesting class of matter wave solitons and their interaction are identified with time independent and periodically modulated trap potentials, which can be experimentally realized in two component condensates. Abstract

We investigate the exact bright and dark solitary wave solutions of an effective one dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by assuming that the interaction energy is much less than the kinetic energy in the transverse direction. In particular, following the earlier works in the literature P\'erez-Garc\'ia et al. [Physica D 221 (2006) 31], Serkin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 074102], G\"urses [arXiv:0704.2435] and Kundu [Phys. Rev. E 79 (2009) 015601], we point out that the effective 1D equation res ulting from the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be transformed into the stand ard soliton (bright/dark) possessing, completely integrable 1D nonlinear Schr\"o dinger (NLS) equation by effecting a change of variables of the coordinates and the wave function. We consider both confining and expulsive harmonic trap potentials separately and treat the atomic scattering length, gain/loss term and trap frequency as the experimental control parameters by modulating them as a function of time. In the case when the trap frequency is kept constant, we show the existence of different kinds of soliton solutions, such as the periodic oscillating solitons, collapse and revival of condensate, snake-like solitons, stable solitons, soliton growth and decay and formation of two-soliton like bound state, as the atomic scattering length and gain/loss term are varied. However when the trap frequency is also modulated, we show the phenomena of collapse and revival of two-soliton like bound state formation of the condensate for double modulated periodic potential and bright and dark solitons for step-wise modulated potentials., Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

In recent years, the multilingual content over the internet has grown exponentially together with the evolution of the internet. The usage of multilingual content is excluded from the regional language users because of the language barrier. So, machine translation between languages is the only possible solution to make these contents available for regional language users. Machine translation is the process of translating a text from one language to another. The machine translation system has been investigated well already in English and other European languages. However, it is still a nascent stage for Indian languages. This paper presents an overview of the Machine Translation in Indian Languages shared task conducted on September 7–8, 2017, at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore, India. This machine translation shared task in Indian languages is mainly focused on the development of English-Tamil, English-Hindi, English-Malayalam and English-Punjabi language pairs. This shared task aims at the following objectives: (a) to examine the state-of-the-art machine translation systems when translating from English to Indian languages; (b) to investigate the challenges faced in translating between English to Indian languages; (c) to create an open-source parallel corpus for Indian languages, which is lacking. Evaluating machine translation output is another challenging task especially for Indian languages. In this shared task, we have evaluated the participant’s outputs with the help of human annotators. As far as we know, this is the first shared task which depends completely on the human evaluation.

Abstract

We investigate nonstationary excitations in 3D-Bose-Einstein condensates in a spherically symmetric trap potential under the modulation of scattering length with slowly varying frequencies (adiabatic modulation). By numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we observe a step-wise increase in the amplitude of oscillation due to successive phase locking between driving frequency and nonlinear frequency. Such a nonstationary excitation has been shown to exist by an analytic approach using variational procedure and perturbation theory in the action-angle variables. Abstract

Long lived gluinos are the trademark of split supersymmetry. They form R-hadrons that, when charged, efficiently lose energy in matter via ionisation. Independent of R-spectroscopy and initial hadronization, a fraction of R-hadrons become charged while traversing a detector. This results in a large number of stopped gluinos at present and future detectors. For a 300 GeV gluino, $10^6$ will stop each year in LHC detectors, while several hundred stop in detectors during Run II at the Tevatron. The subsequent decays of stopped gluinos produce distinctive depositions of energy in calorimeters with no activity in either the tracker or the muon chamber. The gluino lifetime can be determined by looking for events where both gluinos stop and subsequently decay., Comment: 18 +1 pages. 6 figures

Abstract

The inhibitive effect of a seaweed (SM) alcoholic extract on MS corrosion immersed in 1 M HCl, for 30 min, was evaluated by the WL method and PPD technique. The protective film was investigated by the Vickers hardness test. WL revealed that 500 ppm SM offered 84 % IE against MS corrosion in 1 M HCl. The inhibitor molecules adsorption onto the metal surface obeyed Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. The R2 value was very high (0.998). The PPD study showed that Ecorr slightly shifted to the anodic side. It was inferred that SM functions as a mixed type of corrosion inhibitor, since the shifts were relatively small. In SM presence, LPR value increased and Icorr decreased. Due to the blanket effect (formation of a protective film on the metallic surface, which was found to be a monolayer, blocking anodic and cathodic sites), the electrons transfer from the metal into the solution was blocked. Vickers hardness of the inhibited MS surface was lower than that of the polished one, but higher than that of the corroded one. The outcome of the study may be used in the pickling industry, where HCl is used to remove the rust from the metal surface, simultaneously not attacking it. © 2023, Sociedade Portuguesa de Electroquimica.
