A new species, Centaurea rahiminejadii Negaresh (Asteraceae) in C. sect. Cynaroides Boiss. ex Walp., is described and illustrated from the Kermanshah Province, west Iran. It is morphologically similar to Centaurea regia Boiss. subsp. regia. Diagnostic morphological of this and closely related taxa are discussed and presented. The ecology, habitat and conservation status of the new species are also described. In addition, Centaurea regia subsp. cynarocephala (Wagenitz) Wagenitz is reported as a new record to the flora of Iran. As the result of surveying the relevant type specimens, together with macro- and micro-morphological studies, chromosome counting and ITS sequencing, Astragalus trifoliastrum was found to be a species independent of A. laguriformis (with which it has peviously been synonymized). In contrast, A. wanensis, assumed to be a synonym of A. trifoliastrum, indeed appears to be identical with A. trifoliastrum. A global taxonomic revision, lectotypifications and neotypifications of Centaurea L. sect. Microlophus (Cass.) DC. (Asteraceae) are presented. The recognized species, the relevant synonyms, type details, examined specimen lists, full descriptions and a taxonomic key are provided for this section. The geographic distribution of all the 9 species recognized is mapped. Centaurea alveicola Rech. f., C. rigida Banks & Sol. and C. polypodiifolia Boiss. var. szovitsiana (Boiss.) To preliminarily evaluate the genetic diversity of the Iranian diploid Triticum L. gene pool, in this study, a total of 176 individuals belonging to T. monococcum L. ssp. aegilopoides (Link) Thell. and T. urartu Thum. ex Gandil. were pre-screened using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of the Acc-1 and Pgk-1 loci. A selected set of 76 DNA samples corresponding to the observed SSCP variants were sequenced for both loci and evaluated for nucleotide diversity associated with the taxonomic groups and geographical regions. We found three haplotypes, including one that was new for Iran, at each locus. Population structure and analysis of molecular variation results proved that the collection evaluated could be genetically divided into two distinct groups, which to a great extent was in accordance with the taxonomic classification. A genetic leakage from T. monococcum ssp. aegilopoides into T. urartu was observed during structure analysis, which was inferred on the basis of occasional outcrossing, despite their inbreeding nature. The results revealed that there was no variation within the populations belonging to T. urartu, while a meaningful variation was found between the geographical regions for T. monococcum ssp. aegilopoides. The median-joining networks revealed a conflict between morphology and haplotype variation, which was interpreted on the basis of introgressive hybridization, recombination signature and rapid speciation. In conclusion, we suggest that SSCP analysis is a useful tool in regions where thorough sequencing of an enormous number of DNA samples is time consuming and not affordable. The present paper deals with the study of the taxonomy of one hundred accessions of Aegilops cylindica collected all around the country, and also Iranian materials and type specimens and related species housed in the Natural History Museum Vienna (W), the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin (B), were studied morphologically. The results showed that morphological traits such as length of spike, length of awn, number of spikelet in each spike, presence/absence of hair on spikelets and rachis were highly variable among the studied materials. The Karyotype analysis was performed on 46 wheat accessions belonging to five species (Triticum monococcum, T. urartu, T. durum, T. turgidum and T. aestivum) and two subspecies (T. boeoticum subsp. thaodar and T. boeoticum subsp. boeoticum) carrying A genome. All chromosomal sizes were measured with computer-aided program Micro Measure 3.3. Software. RL, TCL, MCL, arm ratio, centromeric index, TF%, mean of long and short arms, AsI%, S%, DRL, A1, A2 and karyotype formula were calculated for each chromosome. All the accessions were placed in 1A category of stebbines asymmetry categories. The scatter diagram based on A1 and A2 constructed three groups of karyotype asymmetry in the accessions studied: 1- T. aestivum with the highest asymmetrical karyotype, 2- T. monococcum, T. boeoticum subsp. thaodar and T. boeoticum subsp. boeoticum with the lowest asymmetrical karyotype and 3- T. urartu, T. turgidum and T. durum being with an intermediate between the two previous groups. T. monococcum based on the A1 and A2 index (asymmetric index) had the oldest and the most primitive karyotype among diploid species. According to the results, it might be suggested that T. durum is more primitive than T. turgidum and T. monococcum could be considered as a donor of A genome to T. durum and T. aestivum. During work on a new synopsis on the genus Bromus L. for the 'Flora Iranica' region, an Afghan perennial brome grass previously identified as the Caucasian B. biebersteinii Roem . & Schult., was found to be a new species. The dried plant was extracted with dichloromethane and after defatting with hexane, transferred repeatedly on silica columns using dichloromethane-hexane and ethyl acetate-hexane as mobile phases. Finally the fractions were purified by high performance liquid chromatography using a Pack-Sil column and hexane: Ethyl acetate as mobile phase. The structures of the isolated compounds included: cycloart-25-ene-3β, 24-diol (1), cycloart-23(Z)- ene-3β, 25-diol (2), cycloart-23(E)-ene-3β, 25-diol (3), and 24-methylene-cycloart-3β-ol (4) were elucidated by 13C- and 1H-NMR as well as IR and by the aid of mass fragmentation pattern and comparing with the literature. The biological effects of the compounds were done by the MTT assay on two different cancer cell lines including MDA-MB48 and MCF-7. Among these compounds, cycloart-23(E)-ene-3β,25-diol (3) was the most active compound on MDA-MB468 cell line (LD50 = 2.05 μgmL- 1 ) and cycloart-23(Z)-ene-3β, 25-diol (2) was the most active compound on MCF-7 cell line (LD50 = 5.4 μgmL- 1). This study concerns the evaluation of 19 vegetative and reproductive characters (7 qualitative and 12 quantitative) among 45 accessions belonging to wild and cultivated tetraploid Triticum L. species: T. turgidum L., T. durum Desf., T. dicoccum (Schrank) Schrebler and T. dicoccoides (Koern. ex Aschers. et Graebn.) Aaronsohn, occurring in Iran. The results of this study show that T. turgidum is a distinct species from T. durum, and T. dicoccum showed high similarity to T. dicoccoides. The strong relationship between the latter pair of species may result from a high degree of gene flow between them. The diagnostic characters between T. turgidum and the other 3 species are the number of awns in the uppermost spikelet, form of the keel of the glume, leaf indumentum, spike shape, lodicule form and quality of the endosperm.
