Abstract

Biomass gasification is a hot topic as renewable energy technology for its wide range of application and capability to be integrated as waste to energy technology as well. Laboratory of biomass gasification of Indonesia has designed a micro scale rice husk gasifier to serves 10 kW of electricity of agricultural sector. The study was carried out by doing a simulation of small-scale rice husk gasifier by varying its working operations. simulation provides overview of syngas composition and showed the maximum LHV value of 6.47 MJ/Nm3 at ER 0.25 followed by increase in the maximum CGE value of 83% at a temperature of 900℃. Furthermore, the integration of renewable technology must consider the economical aspect. The gasifier has an LCOE value ranging from 0.014 USD/kW - 0.089 USD/kW depending on the use of the Gasifier. The feasibility of using rice husk gasifier also inspected using NPV, Benefits to Cost Ratio and Payback Period (PBP). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Green and clean photocatalytic technology has been extensively applied to degrade environmental pollutants and produce renewable energy, which is an important mean to solve environmental and energy problems. However, limited to the cost and efficiency of photocatalysts, it is difficult to realize large-scale application. In recent years, the single-atom photocatalysts (SAPCs) have added new vitality into this field. SAPCs have the active homogeneous centers, heterogeneous structures, stability, high catalytic activity and selectivity properties. The related researches on its synthesis, characterization and application have become a hot spot in many fields. In this review, the photocatalytic H2 production, CO2 reduction, nitrogen fixation, NOx removal, volatile organic compounds removal, pollutant degradation, reduction of radionuclides and heavy metal ions using SAPCs are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of the six kinds of SAPCs substrates are analyzed, and design strategies are carefully summarized. The mechanisms of photocatalysis, isolated-site reactions, photogenerated e−-h+ transfer and the construction of efficient photoactivation cycles are discussed. Finally, the future development trend of SAPCs is prospected. This review will provide a reference for the design of high efficiency SAPCs. The structures, characteristics and synthesis of SAPCs with different substrates are reviewed. The applications of SAPCs and their photocatalytic removal for different pollutants are introduced. The photocatalytic reaction processes and mechanisms for different pollutants are discussed. The development direction and challenges of SAPCs in the field of environmental energy are prospected. While renewable energy resources (RERs) such as solar and wind gain traction, the reliance on conventional utilities persists, especially in homes. This reliance, especially on fossil fuels, intensifies environmental concerns due to greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents the smart household energy management system (SHEMS), designed to optimize domestic energy consumption. Capitalizing on the Internet of Things (IoT), SHEMS offers real-time energy monitoring and management, providing homeowners an adaptable architectural framework to regulate their energy use. Fundamental component of SHEMS is a controller interfacing with all household loads and the main meter, ensuring timely data on power consumption. Notably, during peak times, the system can autonomously adjust appliance settings, balancing energy savings without compromising user convenience. The multi-level inverter (MLI) is more efficient due to its ability to eliminate low-order harmonics. Thus, it is widely used in renewable energy generation, electric vehicles (EVs), etc. The choice of the neutral-point clamped (NPC) converter topology as a research object is of great significance in practical engineering. However, complex modulation algorithms and neutral-point voltage unbalance are two inherent problems for such NPC inverters. In this paper, an improved multi-voltage vector model predictive control (MVV-MPC) strategy based on neighboring four voltage vector synthesis is presented for three-phase NPC inverters. The duty cycle calculation and derivation methods for the proposed method are very simple, and they were obtained through the action time of each voltage vector being inversely proportional to the value of the corresponding cost function. Moreover, the fixed switching frequency of this strategy is maintained and the current peak ripple is reduced, guaranteeing the preferred total harmonic distortion of the output waveform. Furthermore, a voltage balancing method based on zero-sequence voltage injection is utilized to achieve dynamic balancing of the midpoint voltage difference and to limit the oscillation magnitude of the midpoint voltage difference to within ± 1 V. Early in history, societies utilize renewable energy sources in response to technical developments and external factors, which resulted in the development of hydropower, wind turbines, and solar PV, as well as their support through policies and agreements. The double ring covered disk resonator solar absorber (DRCDRSA) structures are examined over the spectral range of wavelength 0.2 µm to 2.5 µm (UV-FIR) with the help of finite element method (FEM) in this study. This design achieved effective solar absorption, surpassing 99% over the 0.46 µm band, 95% over 2.05 µm wideband, and 90% over the entire observed spectral range, with an overall average absorbance of 96.38%. In addition, the maximum absorbance is 99.9% with three pick values at the wavelengths of 0.34 µm, 1.35 µm, and 1.51 µm. This research includes a parameter optimization as well as the electric field strength and magnetic field intensity distribution over a three-dimensional solar absorber construction. The structure's angle-polarization study shows it is polarization independent, handles diverse angles, and maintains even absorption up to 60° across all wavelengths. Summary: In this paper, a high voltage gain hybrid interleaved DC‐DC converter (HIC) with quadratic voltage gain is proposed that is suitable for renewable energy systems. The hybrid technique is used in this converter to increase the output voltage. The proposed DC‐DC converter utilizes the interleaved boost converter on the input side, and the input current is shared with a low ripple that lengthens the lifetime of the renewable power source. In addition, the proposed converter has low voltage stress across the components that can be adopted to reduce conduction losses and the cost of the elements. In addition, the proposed converter share ground between the input and output and has high efficiency. The operation modes of the proposed converter are analyzed, and its equations are calculated. Then, the elements of the proposed converter are designed in continuous conduction mode. A comprehensive comparison of the proposed converter with other recently presented existing converters is discussed to show the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed structure. This study investigates the role of energy imports in domestic production function in the case of 15 energy-importing countries for the period of 1995–2015. Apart from energy imports, renewable energy consumption, non-renewable energy consumption, capital, trade openness, and urbanization are included in the growth model. In doing so, long-run elasticity coefficients are estimated with the Dynamic Seemingly Unrelated Regressions (DSUR) model after determining the cointegration relationship between the variables. In addition, for robustness checks, Panel Correlated Standard Errors (PCSE) and Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) estimators are applied. Our results show that renewable energy consumption, non-renewable energy consumption, trade openness, and capital have a positive effect on economic growth. Energy imports negatively affect economic growth. The Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality analysis reveals a bidirectional causality relationship between renewable energy consumption, capital, trade openness, urbanization, and economic growth. A unidirectional causality relationship exists from economic growth to non-renewable energy consumption and energy imports. This analysis can be interpreted as having a negative impact on economic growth by putting pressure on the current account deficit due to energy imports. This study examines the relationship between financial inclusion, renewable energy, and CO2 emissions using data from 11 Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries from 2004 to 2019. Evidence from fixed effects-ordinary least squares (FE-OLS), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), and canonical correlation regression (CRR) showed that financial inclusion contributes significantly to decarbonization. Country-specific analysis indicated that financial inclusion is associated with mitigating CO2 emissions in Egypt, Israel, Qatar, and Tunisia while significantly spurring CO2 emissions in Algeria, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia. In addition, renewable energy contributes significantly to decarbonization in MENA, especially in Algeria, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Turkey. Iconic destinations are benchmarks for tourism development, but their effects on the environment are debatable. To highlight the tourism attractiveness factors of sustainability in the world's most visited destinations, we applied clustering and multiple regression to specific indicators for the period 2000–2020. We observed a relatively high heterogeneity in terms of sustainability, with destinations split into four clusters: C1 (France, Spain, Italy, Germany and UK), C2 (Mexico and Thailand), C3 (USA, China) and C4 (Turkey). Unsustainable factors in all destinations include the industry and construction sector, social insecurity, inflation and transport services development. Renewable energy consumption is sustainable, while economic growth, education and tourism indicators have antagonistic effects. The effects of tourism attractiveness factors on the environment have decision-making implications at all levels. The novelty of this analysis lies in the tourism attractiveness factors examined, and the results can help shape tourism development policies in balance with structural policies such as energy and environment. Abstract

This paper proposes the Hybrid desalination and power generation through parabolic trough collectors. This study aims to examine the feasibility, performance optimization, and economic viability of power-generation plant and hybrid-desalination using multi-stage flash (MSF) and reverse osmosis (RO) technologies assessed by using the parabolic trough collectors (PTC). The objective is to discover the posibilities of this innovative approach in addressing water scarcity and clean energy demands. The studies usually focus on several key aspects. Firstly, it resolves the technical feasibility of integrating MSF and RO technologies with parabolic-trough-collectors to optimize energy efficiency and freshwater production. This involves evaluating the system design, heat transfer mechanisms, and operational parameters.Secondly, performance optimization is a key area of investigation. By optimizing these parameters the aim is to maximize freshwater production while minimizing energy consumption. Thirdly, the economic viability of the hybrid plant will be assessed. This involves considering capital investment, conducting a comprehensive cost analysis, maintenance costs, and operational expenses. The study also evaluates the potential for revenue generation through the sale of excess electricity produced by the system. The potential outcomes of this research include demonstrating the technical-feasibility as well as economic-viability of the hybrid desalination and power generation plant. The findings may indicate that this approach can effectively address water scarcity challenges while contributing to clean energy production. The study may also highlight the environmental benefits of integrating renewable energy sources (RESs) and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional desalination methods.The proposed method is executed in MATLAB platform and compared to various existing approaches. Abstract

Turning biomass waste into briquettes using densification techniques is one of the most promising steps toward mitigating biomass waste pollution and fuel issues in developing countries. Despite the continuous growth of scientific output over the past few decades, only a limited amount of information is available in the literature on biomass briquette optimization and mathematical modeling, as well as the physiochemical characterization of biomass feedstocks and briquette operating variables. In light of this gap in the current literature, this study summarizes the current state of the art and recent advances in biomass-based briquettes generated from agro-residues as an alternative source of clean energy. The primary research method for this study is literature review and conceptual modeling. First, many densification processes, such as piston press, screw press, roller press, hydraulic press, and quality variables such as ash content, calorific value, moisture content, density, compressive strength, shatter index, etc., are thoroughly discussed and compared. Then characteristics of different biomass wastes are studied, together with process parameters, including temperature, type of binder used, particle size, and influence on densification process choice. The current evaluation concentrated on the mathematical modeling and optimization of the briquetting technology and the usefulness of briquettes in applications for heating, cooking, and energy production. Overall, this manuscript will help new researchers understand the basic methodology, classification, limitations, and future perspective of briquetting technology in the production of solid biofuels. Abstract

Year after year, there are alarming data concerning the excessive release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, especially CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels. In this context, the development of renewable energy sources has evolved considerably, mainly due to the incentive use of biofuels, such as bioethanol. The second-generation bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomasses has interesting potential to meet this energy demand. The Eucalyptus tree stands as a primary example of cultivated hardwoods, owing to its lignocellulosic structure and the biomass residues generated during its processing, where these attributes make it a significant candidate for the production of fuels. The industrial potential of these materials can be explored in the fractionation of their components to reduce their recalcitrance due to the triad formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, for further processing and obtaining the products of interest. This paper comprehensively gathers the current technological progress employed for processing Eucalyptus wood biomasses for second-generation bioethanol production. Discussion regarding their chemical composition, the main forms of pretreatments that are being applied, and ways to minimize the generation of fermentative inhibitors during these processes is addressed. Finally, recent researches focused on Eucalyptus biomass-based bioethanol production and techno-economic considerations are discussed. The feasibility of the process is closely tied to the comprehensive utilization of products derived from this biomass. While production appears relatively effective at the laboratory scale, further research is required to develop a cost-effective process that fully harnesses the potential of the biomass. Abstract

Wood pellet is an important biomass-based source of cleaner and renewable energy with a growing global demand. Populus spp. (poplars) are fast-growing trees with high productivity potential in the southeastern US. Selected pellet-quality parameters were examined as a proxy for assessing if the feedstock quality of poplar stem wood was affected by stand location (Coastal, Piedmont, Mountains of North Carolina, clone "140"), stand age (five vs. seven years, clone-"140"), clones ("140", "176", "230", "185", "356") and stem sections (clone-"356") by examining sulfur, ash, volatile-matter, fixed-carbon, gross caloric, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen contents of moisture-free samples. Location-study samples significantly varied (p≤0.027) in ash (0.6–0.9 wt%), and gross caloric (19.75–19.89 MJ/kg) contents and study clones significantly differed (p≤0.0271) in ash (means: 0.75–0.97 wt%), volatile-matter (means: 80.5–82.7 wt%), fixed-carbon (means: 16.5–18.7 wt%) and hydrogen (means: 4.19–4.78 wt%) contents. The only other significant variations were hydrogen (mean: 4.19–4.67 wt%) content with stand age (p≤0.009) and gross caloric values (19.5–19.9 MJ/kg) among stem sections (p = 0.0003). This study showed that poplars have stem-wood quality suitable for pellet production and most of the studied feedstock samples had ash, nitrogen, sulfur, and caloric (at 10% moisture content) contents that would meet the ENplus pellet-quality standards. Results from this study can be used for facilitating decisions about managing poplar stands for sustainable pellet feedstock production in the southeastern US, including selecting optimum rotation length, pellet-suitable clones, and sites. Abstract

Hydrogen, a form of energy that is both clean and renewable, is now being researched and developed as a potential source of alternative energy. There are many different kinds of microbial systems that have the potential to be utilised in the manufacturing of biohydrogen. Thermophiles are found as potential producers of hydrogen, at a high rate, in adverse operating conditions. Temperature, pH, and concentration of substrates play a crucial role in affecting the metabolism of these microorganisms. Sustainable production of hydrogen is feasible when organic waste is employed as a potential feedstock. The overall yield of hydrogen production procedures demands improvements, to turn them into commercial applications. The integration of two-stage processes may contribute to an overall increase in energy output. As examples of second-stage processes, biomethanation, microbial electrolysis cells, photo-fermentation, and microbial fuel cells have been the subject of extensive research. This article provides an overview of the photocatalytic method for producing biohydrogen, including its fundamentals and underlying mechanisms, as well as other biological methods of hydrogen production.
