Abstract: The neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN, Switzerland, operational since 2001, delivers neutrons using the Proton Synchrotron (PS) 20 GeV/c proton beam impinging on a lead spallation target. The facility combines a very high instantaneous neutron flux, an excellent time of flight resolution due to the distance between the experimental area and the production target (185 meters), a low intrinsic background and a wide range of neutron energies, from thermal to GeV neutrons. These characteristics provide a unique possibility to perform neutron-induced capture and fission cross-section measurements for applications in nuclear astrophysics and in nuclear reactor technology. The most relevant measurements performed up to now and foreseen for the future will be presented in this contribution. The overall efficiency of the experimental program and the range of possible measurements achievable with the construction of a second experimental area (EAR-2), vertically located 20 m on top of the n_TOF spallation target, might offer a substantial improvement in measurement sensitivities. A feasibility study of the possible realisation of the installation extension will be also presented.

Abstract: We have measured the absolute branching ratio BR ( K ± → π ± π 0 π 0 ) with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e + e − collider. We collected ∼ 3.3 × 10 7 tagged charged kaons, from the reaction e + e − → ϕ → K + K − . We find BR ( K ± → π ± π 0 π 0 ) = ( 1.763 ± 0.013 stat ± 0.022 syst ) × 10 − 2 .

53. Oxidation of the hexagonal Zr(Cr0.4Fe0.6)2 Laves phase

Abstract: The hexagonal (C14-type) Laves phase Zr(Cr0.40Fe0.60)2 when oxidized in an open furnace was studied by X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy techniques. Oxidation modified part of the original Laves phase and Zr oxides, Cr oxides, α-Cr, (Fe, Cr) oxides, α-Fe and α-Fe2O3 appeared. The behaviour of these phases, particularly the Fe-bearing phases, is described in detail through a two stage process (stage I from 0 to ∼7 wt% O2 and stage II up to 22 wt% O2). A very small amount of O2 (stage I) is enough to induce the formation of α-Fe upon oxidation, sustaining a model previously suggested for the oxidation of the Laves phases. This α-Fe is highly Cr-substituted. Oxidation proceeds through the increasing presence of α-Fe2O3 and through the structural evolution of Zr oxides (formation of monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic ZrO2).

Abstract: We have measured the ratio R = Γ ( K L → γγ )/ Γ ( K L → π 0 π 0 π 0 ) using the KLOE detector. From a sample of ∼10 9 φ -mesons produced at DAΦNE, the Frascati φ -factory, we select ∼1.6×10 8 K L -mesons tagged by observing K S → π + π − following the reaction e + e − → φ → K L K S . From this sample we select 27,375 K L → γγ events and obtain R =(2.79±0.02 stat ±0.02 syst )×10 −3 . Using the world average value for BR( K L → π 0 π 0 π 0 ), we obtain BR( K L → γγ )=(5.89±0.07±0.08)×10 −4 where the second error is due to the uncertainty on the π 0 π 0 π 0 branching fraction.

Abstract: We have measured the branching ratio BR( φ → π 0 π 0 γ ) with the KLOE detector using a sample of ∼5×10 7 φ decays. φ mesons are produced at DA Φ NE, the Frascati φ -factory. We find BR( φ → π 0 π 0 γ )=(1.09±0.03 stat ±0.05 syst )×10 −4 . We fit the two-pion mass spectrum to models to disentangle contributions from various sources.

Abstract: This paper presents the calibration of two different kinds of image plates (IPs) for detecting electrons with kinetic energy in the range of 150 keV–1.75 MeV. The calibration was performed using a 90Sr β source. The paper also provides the measured fading response for the IPs in the time range from 12 min to 18 h. Calibration results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations of energy deposited by the electrons in the sensitive layer of the IPs. It was found that within this energy range a linear relation between simulated energy deposited by the electron in the phosphor layer and the measured photo stimulated luminescence in the IP is adequate to model the response of the IP.

Abstract: The KLOE experiment uses a fine sampling lead-scintillating fibre calorimeter to measure energy, time and position of neutral and charged particles. The overall detector consists of 88 modules organised in a barrel and two end-caps, for a total granularity of 2440 cells, read-out by photo-multipliers at both fibre ends. The chosen design of a high sampling fraction with the usage of thin lead layers and fast scintillating fibres allows to reach good efficiency for photon energies down to few MeV, good energy resolution and excellent time resolution. The design, calibration and performances of the calorimeter on efficiency, time/position/energy resolution and particle identification is reviewed. Abstract: We have measured the cross section sigma(e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma(gamma)) at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory, using events with initial state radiation photons emitted at small angle and inclusive of final state radiation. We present the analysis of a new data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 240 pb(-1). We have achieved a reduced systematic uncertainty with respect to previously published KLOE results. From the cross section we obtain the pion form factor and the contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly from two-pion states in the mass range 0.592 < M(pi pi) < 0.975 GeV. For the latter we find Delta(pi pi)a(mu) = (387.2 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 2.4(exp) +/- 2.3(th)) x 10(-10).

Abstract: We present the KLOE measurements on KS , KL , K �� semileptonic decays from which we find |Vus | = 0.2237(13). From the KLOE measurement of BR(K+�� + �� ) we obtain |Vus & Vud | = 0.2323(15). An overall fit gives |Vus | = 0.2249(10) and |Vud | = 0.97417(26), compatible with unitarity: 1- (V 2 ud + V 2 us +-4 . V 2 ub ) = (4 �� 7) �� 10

Abstract: The angular distribution of fragments emitted in neutron-induced fission of 232Th was measured in the white spectrum neutron beam at the n_TOF facility at CERN. A reaction chamber based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC) was used, where the detectors and the targets have been tilted 45 degrees with respect to the neutron beam direction in order to cover the full angular range of the fission fragments. A GEANT4 simulation has been developed to study the setup efficiency. The data analysis and the preliminary results obtained for the 232Th(n,f) between fission threshold and 100 MeV are presented here., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract: See paper for full list of authors; International audience; The (n, α) reaction in the radioactive 59Ni is of relevance in nuclear astrophysics as 59Ni can be considered as the first branching point in the astrophysical s-process. Its relevance in nuclear technology is especially related to material embrittlement in stainless steel. However, there is a discrepancy between available experimental data and the evaluated nuclear data files for this reaction. At the n_TOF facility at CERN, a dedicated system based on sCVD diamond diodes was set up to measure the 59Ni(n, α)56Fe cross section. The results of this measurement, with special emphasis on the dominant resonance at 203 eV, are presented here.

Abstract: Micromegas (Micro-MEsh Gaseous Structure) detectors are gas detectors consisting of a stack of one ionization and one proportional chamber. A micromesh separates the two communicating regions, where two different electric fields establish respectively a charge drift and a charge multiplication regime. The n_TOF facility at CERN provides a white neutron beam (from thermal up to GeV neutrons) for neutron induced cross section measurements. These measurements need a perfect knowlodge of the incident neutron beam, in particular regarding its spatial profile. A position sensitive micromegas detector equipped with a 10B based neutron/charged particle converter has been extensively used at the n_TOF facility for characterizing the neutron beam profile and extracting the beam interception factor for samples of different size. The boron converter allowed to scan the energy region of interest for neutron induced capture reactions as a function of the neutron energy, determined by the time of flight. Abstract: Current and future nuclear technologies require more accurate nuclear data on (n,γ) cross sections and the α-ratios of fissile isotopes. Their measurement presents several difficulties, mainly related to the strong fission γ-ray background competing with the weaker γ-ray cascades used as the experimental signature of the (n,γ) process. A specific setup was used at the CERN n TOF facility in 2012 for the measurement of the (n,γ) cross section and α-ratios of fissile isotopes and used for the case of the 235U isotope. The setup consists of a set of micromegas fission detectors surrounding the 235U samples all placed inside a segmented BaF2 Total Absorption Calorimeter., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract: The 241Am(n,gamma) cross sections have been measured at the n TOF facility at CERN using C6D6 liquid scintillators and time of flight spectrometry. The results in the resolved resonance range bring new constraints to evaluations below 150 eV, and the energy upper limit can be extended from 150 eV to 320 eV. The analysis goes from thermal energy to 150 keV, and the unresolved resonance range cross section turns out to be larger than expected by evaluations or otherwise measured by previous works. The thermal cross section is found to be σth = 740 ± 74 barns, which is larger than expected by evaluations and most previous measurements., JRC.D.4-Standards for Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards

Abstract: Using a sample of over 600 million phi->K+K- decays collected at the Dafne e+e- collider, we have measured with the KLOE detector the absolute branching ratios for the charged kaon semileptonic decays, K+/- -> p0 e nu (gamma) (Ke3) and K+/- -> p0 mu nu (gamma) (Kmu3). The results, BR(Ke3) = 0.04965 +/- 0.00038_{stat} +/- 0.00037_{syst} and BR(Kmu3) = 0.03233 +/- 0.00029_{stat} +/- 0.00026_{syst}, are inclusive of radiation. Accounting for correlations, we derive the ratio Kmu3/Ke3 = 0.6511+/-0.0064. Abstract: We present results of a direct search for the decay KS → e +e- with the KLOE de- tector, obtained with a sample of e+e- → φ → KSKL events produced at DAPdblNE, the Frascati φ-factory, for an integrated luminosity of 1.3 fb-1. The StandardModel prediction for this decay is BR(KS → e+e -) = 1.6 × 10-15. The search has been performed tagging the KS decays by simultaneous detection of a KL interaction in the calorimeter. Background rejection has been optimized by using both kine- matic cuts and particle identification. At the end of the analysis chain we find BR(KS → e+e-) < 2.1 × 10-8 at 90% CL, which improves by a factor of ∼ 7 on the previous best result, obtained by CPLEAR experiment.

Abstract: An integrated luminosity of 410 pb-1, corresponding to �� 17 million of �� events, has been analyzed to measure the �� mass using the decay �� . The measurement is insensitive to the calorimeter energy calibration and the systematic error on the measurement is dominated by the uniformity of the detector response. As a cross check of the method the ��0 mass from the decay �� 0, ��0 �� has been measured and it is in agreement with the most accurate previous determinations. The result obtained is m �� = 547.873��0.007stat. ��0.031syst. MeV, that is today best measurement of the �� mass.

Abstract: We have measured the ratio R ϕ = BR ( ϕ → η ′ γ ) / BR ( ϕ → η γ ) by looking for the radiative decays ϕ → η ′ γ and ϕ → η γ into the final states π + π − 7 γ and 7γ, respectively, in a sample of ∼ 1.4 × 10 9 ϕ mesons produced at the Frascati ϕ factory. We obtain R ϕ = ( 4.77 ± 0.09 stat ± 0.19 syst ) × 10 −3 , from which we derive BR ( ϕ → η ′ γ ) = ( 6.20 ± 0.11 stat ± 0.25 syst ) × 10 −5 . Assuming the η ′ has zero gluonium content, we extract the pseudoscalar mixing angle in the quark-flavor basis, φ P = ( 41.4 ± 0.3 stat ± 0.7 syst ± 0.6 th ) ° . Combining the value of R ϕ with other constraints, we estimate the fractional gluonium content of the η ′ to be Z 2 = 0.14 ± 0.04 and the mixing angle to be φ P = ( 39.7 ± 0.7 ) ° .

Abstract: We present a measurement of the K-pi vector current form-factor parameters for the decay K-L -> pi(+/-)e(-/+)nu. We use 328 pb(-1) of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to similar to 2 million K-e3 events. Measurements of semileptonic form factors provide information about the dynamics of the strong interaction and are necessary for evaluation of the phase-space integral I-K(e) needed to measure the CKM matrix element |V-us| for K-L -> pi(+/-)e(-/+)nu decays. Our result is lambda(+) = (28.6 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3) for a linear fit, and lambda'(+) = (25.5 +/- 1.5 +/- 1.0) x 10(-3), (1.4 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3) for a quadratic fit. Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching ratio of the CP violating decay K-L -> pi(+)pi(-) performed by the KLOE experiment at the phi factory DA Phi NE. We use 328pb(-1) of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to similar to 150 million tagged K-L mesons. We find BR(K-L -> pi(+)pi(-)) = (1.963 +/- 0.012(stat). +/- 0.017(syst.)) x 10(-3). This branching ratio measurement is fully inclusive of final-state radiation. Using the above result, we determine the modulus of the amplitude ratio vertical bar eta(+-)| to be (2.219 +/- 0.013) x 10(-3) and vertical bar epsilon vertical bar to be (2.216 +/- 0.013) x 10(-3).

Abstract: We describe the method of measuring the integrated luminosity of the $e^+e^-$ collider DA$\Phi$NE, the Frascati $\phi-$factory. The measurement is done with the KLOE detector selecting large angle Bhabha scattering events and normalizing them to the effective cross section. The $e^+e^- \to e^+e^-(\gamma)$ cross section is calculated using different event generators which account for the $O(\alpha)$ radiative initial and final state corrections, and the $\phi$ resonance contribution. The accuracy of the measurement is 0.6%, where 0.3% comes from systematic errors related to the event counting and 0.5% from theoretical evaluations of the cross section., Comment: Submitted to Eur. Abstract: From a sample of about 10(9) phi mesons produced at DA phi NE, we have selected K-L mesons tagged by observing K-S -> pi(+) pi(-) decays. We present results on the major KL branching ratios, including those of the semileptonic decays needed for the determination of vertical bar V(us)vertical bar. These branching ratio measurements are fully inclusive with respect to final-state radiation. The K-L lifetime has also been measured.

Abstract: We present the first observation of quantum interference in the process phi -> KSKL -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(+)pi(-), using the KLOE detector at the Frascati e(+)e(-) collider DA Phi NE. From about 5 x 10(4) neutral kaon pairs both decaying to pi(+)pi(-) pairs we obtain the distribution of At,. the difference between the two kaon decay times, which allows testing the validity of quantum mechanics and C P T invariance: no violation of either is observed. New or improved limits on coherence loss and C P T violation are presented.

Abstract: We measured, with the KLOE detector, the spectrum of pi(+)pi(-) invariant mass in a sample of 6.7 x 10(5) e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma events with the photon at large polar angle (theta(gamma) > 45 degrees) at a centre of mass energy root s around the phi mass. We observe in this spectrum a clear contribution from the intermediate process phi -> f(0)(980)gamma. A sizeable effect is also observed in the distribution of the pion forward-backward asymmetry. We use different theoretical models to fit the spectrum and we determine the to mass and coupling constants to the phi, to pi(+)pi(-) and to KK.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the K-pi vector current form-factor parameters for the decay K(L) →pi+-e-+nu. We use 328 pb^−1 of data collected in 2001 and 2002, corresponding to about 2 million Ke3 events. Measurements of semileptonic form factors provide information about the dynamics of the strong interaction and are necessary for evaluation of the phase-space integral IeK needed to measure the CKM matrix element |Vus | for K(L) →pi+-e-+nu decays. Our result is (lambda)+ = (28.6±0.5±0.4)×10-3 for a linear fit, and (lambda)'+ = (25.5±1.5±1.0)×10^-3, (lambda)''+ = (1.4±0.7±0.4)×10^-3 for a quadratic fit.

Abstract: We have measured the fully inclusive K+ -> mu(+)v(y) absolute branching ratio with the KLOE experiment at DM phi NE, the Frascati phi-factory. From some 865283 K+ -> mu(+)v(gamma) decays obtained from a sample of similar to 5.2 x 10(8), phi-meson decays, we find BR(K+ -> mu+v(mu),(gamma)) = 0.6366 +/- 0.0009(stat.) +/- 0.0015(syst)., corresponding to an overall fractional error of 0.27%. Using recent lattice results on the decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons one can obtain an estimate for the CKM mixing matrix element vertical bar V(us)vertical bar = 0.2223 +/- 0.0026.

Abstract: Using a sample of over 400 million phi -> KSKL decays produced during the years 2001 and 2002 at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider, the ratio R-S(pi) = Gamma(K-S -> pi(+) pi(-)(gamma))/Gamma (K-S -> pi(0)pi(0)) has been measured with the KLOE detector. The result is R-pi(S) = 2.2555 +/- 0.0012(stat)+/- 0.0021(corr-stat)+/- 0.0050(syst), which is in good agreement with the previously published result based on the KLOE data sample from the year 2000. The average of the KLOE results is R-S(pi) = 2.2549 +/- 0.0054, reducing the total error by a factor of three, to 0.25%.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the KL lifetime using the KLOE detector. From a sample of 4 x 10^8 KS KL pairs following the reaction e+ e- -> phi -> KS KL we select 15 x 10^6 KL -> p0 p0 p0 decays tagged by KS -> pi+ pi- events. From a fit of the proper time distribution we find tau_L = (50.92 +- 0.17{stat} +- 0.25{syst})$ ns. This is the most precise measurement of the KL lifetime performed to date., 14 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: We have searched for the decay K-S -> 3 pi(0) with the KLOE experiment at DA Phi NE using data from e(+)e(-) collisions at a center of mass energy W similar to m(phi)c(2) for an integrated luminosity L = 450 pb(-1). The search has been performed with a pure K-S beam obtained by tagging with K-L interactions in the calorimeter and detecting six photons. We find an upper limit for the branching ratio of 1.2 x 10(-7) at 90% C.L.

Abstract: The KLOE experiment at DAΦNE has collected data for an integrated luminosity of ~ 1.3 fb-1 from e+e- collisions at center-of-mass energy around the ϕ-meson peak, W ~1.02 GeV . A selection of results obtained from a sample of 450 pb-1 of data acquired during year 2001 and 2002 is presented. Studying tagged KS and KL-mesons produced in the reaction e+e-→ϕ→KS KL we measured the branching ratio of the decay KS→πeν, the upper limit on the decay KS→π0π0π0, and the main KL decay branching ratios. Exploiting the initial state radiation in the reaction e+e-→π+π-γ, we extracted the hadronic cross-section as a function of the squared center-of-mass energy sπ of the π π system, in the range 0.35 < sπ < 0.95 GeV 2.

Abstract: The KLOE experiment at DAΦNE has collected ∼ 450 pb−1 of e+e− collisions at center of mass energy W ∼ 1.02 GeV. Final results on the BR(KS → 3π0), KL dominant Branching ratio, KL lifetime and the extraction of the CKM parameter Vus are presented.

Abstract: We have searched with the KLOE detector for the P and CP violating decay eta --> pi(+)pi(-) in a sample of 1.55 x 10(7) eta's from the decay phi --> etagamma of phi-mesons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at DAPhiNE. No signal is found. We obtain the upper limit BR(eta --> pi(+)pi(-)) < 1.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We have measured the absolute branching ratio BR(K+/- --> pi(+/-)pi(0)pi(0)) with the KLOE detector at the DAPhiNE e(+)e(-) collider. We collected similar to 3.3 x 10(7) tagged charged kaons, from the reaction e(+)e(-) --> phi --> K+K-. We find BR(K+/- --> pi(+/-)pi(0)pi(0)) = (1.763 +/- 0.013(stat) +/- 0.022(syst)) x 10(-2).

Abstract: The KLOE experiment at DA/spl Phi/NE is largely devoted to the study of discrete symmetries in the K/sub S/K/sub L/ system. During 2001-2002, KLOE collected 1.4 /spl times/ 10/sup 9/ /spl phi/ decays, for a total data volume of nearly 200 TB. We describe the KLOE computing environment, outlining our solutions to issues of calibration, reconstruction, data reduction, and data access for analysis. We discuss the performance of the system, with particular emphasis on the data-processing and transfer rates, and also describe the generation of large Monte Carlo samples. The KLOE computing environment has been been demonstrated to be flexible and scalable in the presence of rapidly evolving data-taking conditions.

Abstract: We have measured the ratio R=Gamma(K_L -> gamma gamma)/ \Gamma(K_L -> 3 pi^0) using the KLOE detector. From a sample of ~ 10^9 phi-mesons produced at DAFNE, the Frascati phi-factory, we select ~ 1.6 10^8 K_L-mesons tagged by observing K_S -> pi^+ pi^- following the reaction e^+ e^- -> phi -> K_L K_S. From this sample we select 27,375 K_L -> gamma gamma events and obtain R = (2.79 \pm 0.02_{stat} \pm 0.02_{syst}) \times 10^{-3}. Using the world average value for BR(K_{L} -> 3 pi^0), we obtain BR(K_{L} -> gamma gamma) = (5.89 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-4} where the second error is due to the uncertainty on the 3 pi^0 branching fraction.

Abstract: We report the results on the radiative decays phi --> eta'gamma, phi --> pi(0)pi(0)gamma and phi --> etapi(0)gamma obtained with the KLOE detector at the DAPhiNE phi-factory, using a sample of similar to 16 pb(-1). The value of the branching ratio for the phi --> eta'gamma decay is related to the s (s) over bar and gluon content of the eta'. A fit to the two-pseudoscalar invariant mass for the pi(0)pi(0)gamma and etapi(0)gamma final states gives the contribution of the direct terms phi --> f(0)gamma, phi --> sigmagamma and phi --> a(0)gamma, allowing us to investigate the nature of these light scalar mesons. Abstract: We present a study of the reaction e+e- --> pi+pi-pi0 at the phi peak W=M(phi)=1019.4 MeV observed with the KLOE detector at Dafne. The reaction is dominated by phi production and decay, e+e- --> phi --> pi+pi-pi0. From a fit to the Dalitz plot density distribution we obtain the rho-meson parameters for its three charge states. We also find the relative amplitudes for phi --> rhopi and phi -> pi+pi-pi0 and the cross-section for e+e- --> omega pi0 with omega --> pi+pi-.
