Abstract

A compact (/spl lambda//sub 0//11 footprint) and low-profile (/spl lambda//sub 0//28 height) metamaterial ring antenna is proposed using two metamaterial unit cells. Each constituent unit cell consists of negative-refractive-index (NRI) microstrip transmission lines (TL) designed to incur a zero insertion phase at the antenna design frequency. This allows the inductive posts to ground, which act as the main radiating elements, to be fed in phase. Hence, the antenna operates as two closely spaced monopoles that are fed in phase through a compact feed network. An embedded matching network ensures good VSWR performance. The theoretical performance of the antenna is verified by full-wave simulations and experimental data obtained from a fabricated prototype at 1.77 GHz. The antenna offers a 120 MHz -10 dB bandwidth and a measured efficiency exceeding 50%.

Abstract

Lubricants which contain a polymeric thickener will often display a second Newtonian plateau in measured flow curves. Like other manifestations of shear-dependent viscosity, this shear response will lead to an inaccurate prediction when the classical film-thickness formulas are employed. A correction formula has been developed from numerical experiments for a range of parameters of the double-Newtonian modified Carreau equation. The parameters of this shear-thinning model were selected from measurements for real lubricants obtained in Couette viscometers and a capillary viscometer. In addition, a full EHL film thickness formula has been derived from the same numerical experiments. The correction formula and the full formula were successfully validated using published film thickness data and published viscosity data for an EHL reference liquid, a polymer solution. Clearly, viscometer measurements of shear-dependent viscosity which contain the inflection leading to the second Newtonian are essential for a film-thickness calculation when a high-molecular-weight component of the lubricant is present.

Abstract

In this paper comparative flow field analysis of two intake configuration i.e. Boundary Layer Diverter Intake and Diverterless Supersonic Intake is carried out based on dimensionless parameters under various flow conditions. Numerical analysis of aircraft intake is a complex phenomenon which involves both external and internal flow analysis. In this research, both external and internal flow characteristics of intake duct are analyzed in detail. A comprehensive mesh scheme is devised and implemented to accurately capture the flow behavior in external surrounding of intake duct and flow passing through the intake duct. The analysis is carried out at different flow conditions to analyze the flow behavior in subsonic and supersonic regimes. Engine design mass flow rate is used for accurate intake analysis and results are validated with available literature. Boundary layer diversion and pressure recovery are examined for each intake configuration and comparative analysis based on pressure recovery is carried out subsequently. The analysis reveals that at subsonic and transonic regimes, Boundary Layer Diverter intake is much more effective than Diverter less Supersonic Intake, however, in supersonic regime Diverter less Supersonic Intake is found be to more effective. The research can further help in modifying/ improving the design of an existing intake configuration for enhanced intake efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A number of new antenna-related applications that have recently been developed at the University of Toronto based on the concept of negative-refractive-index transmission-line metamaterials are reviewed. These include non-radiating phase-shifting lines that can produce either a positive or a negative phase-shift while exhibiting a broadband linear phase response, as well as compact and broadband series power dividers and associated planar series-fed printed dipole arrays with reduced beam-squinting. Moreover, a fully printed electrically small ring antenna featuring vertical polarisation and good radiation efficiency is also described. © 2007 The Institution of Engineering and Technology. 1 1 12 22

Abstract

Metamaterials are artificial structures engineered to exhibit unusual electromagnetic properties. Metamaterials (MTM) that exhibit a simultaneously negative electric permittivity /spl epsi/ and magnetic permeability /spl mu/, and thus a negative refractive index (NRI), have recently attracted considerable attention in the electromagnetic community. This has been motivated by the potential to create new microwave and antenna devices that exhibit superior characteristics compared to their conventional counterparts. A useful method for implementing planar metamaterials is based on reactively loaded transmission lines (TL). Such NRI-TE media consist of a network of printed transmission lines, periodically loaded with lumped-element series capacitors (C/sub o/) and shunt inductors (L/sub o/) in a dual-TL (high-pass) configuration. The planar nature of the TL-based metamaterial (MTM) structures renders them well suited for the realization of planar microwave antennas and circuits. This paper discusses some antenna applications of NRI-TL metamaterials.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: There is need to promote professionalism in junior doctors. The big challenge for medical education is how we can teach and assess professionalism. The objective of the study is to find out-is work place based assessment is a valuable tool to assess professionalism? Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in Gynae/Obs department of Shalamar Medical and Dental college Lahore. Total 50 junior doctor were included in the study. Approval was taken from the ethical committee of hospital. After obtaining informed consent data was collected by direct observation of junior doctors at their place of work during routine working. Results: 50 junior doctors participated in the study. 25 were house officers and 25 were first year residents. The main traits which were found deficient were empathy in 30%, interpersonal skills in 35% and communication with the patients in 45%. Conclusion: Work place based assessment is a valuable tool for professionalism. Junior doctors should be assessed at their place of work and feedback provided will help them to identify areas of deficiencies and improvement for future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
