51. Exploring the impact of training data bias on automatic generation of video captions

Abstract: A major issue in machine learning is availability of training data. While this historically referred to the availability of a sufficient volume of training data, recently this has shifted to the availability of sufficient unbiased training data. In this paper we focus on the effect of training data bias on an emerging multimedia application, the automatic captioning of short video clips. We use subsets of the same training data to generate different models for video captioning using the same machine learning technique and we evaluate the performances of different training data subsets using a well-known video caption benchmark, TRECVid. We train using the MSR-VTT video-caption pairs and we prune this to reduce and make the set of captions describing a video more homogeneously similar, or more diverse, or we prune randomly. We then assess the effectiveness of caption-generating trained with these variations using automatic metrics as well as direct assessment by human assessors. Our findings are preliminary and show that randomly pruning captions from the training data yields the worst performance and that pruning to make the data more homogeneous, or diverse, does improve performance slightly when compared to random. Our work points to the need for more training data, both more video clips but, more importantly, more captions for those videos.

The new Odenton Town Center is the result of collaboration between the Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce and a team of undergraduate Landscape Architecture students at the University of Maryland, made possible by the Partnership for Action Learning in Sustainability (PALS). Abstract: Physical review / D covering particles, fields, gravitation, and cosmology 94(8), 082002(2016). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.94.082002, We present a search for ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles with the Pierre Auger observatory. Such particles, possibly a relic of phase transitions in the early Universe, would deposit a large amount of energy along their path through the atmosphere, comparable to that of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The air-shower profile of a magnetic monopole can be effectively distinguished by the fluorescence detector from that of standard UHECRs. No candidate was found in the data collected between 2004 and 2012, with an expected background of less than 0.1 event from UHECRs. The corresponding 90% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits on the flux of ultrarelativistic magnetic monopoles range from 10$^{-19}$(cm$^2$ sr s)$^{−1}$ for a Lorentz factor γ=10$^9$ to 2.5×10$^{-21}$(cm$^2$ sr s)$^{−1}$ for γ=10$^{12}$. Abstract: Physical review / D covering particles, fields, gravitation, and cosmology 93(7), 072006(2016). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.93.072006, The azimuthal asymmetry in the risetime of signals in Auger surface detector stations is a source of information on shower development. The azimuthal asymmetry is due to a combination of the longitudinal evolution of the shower and geometrical effects related to the angles of incidence of the particles into the detectors. The magnitude of the effect depends upon the zenith angle and state of development of the shower and thus provides a novel observable, (secθ)max, sensitive to the mass composition of cosmic rays above 3×1018 eV. By comparing measurements with predictions from shower simulations, we find for both of our adopted models of hadronic physics (QGSJETII-04 and EPOS-LHC) an indication that the mean cosmic-ray mass increases slowly with energy, as has been inferred from other studies. Abstract: A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×1018 eVis presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than60◦ detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies.Above 5.3×1018 eV, the ?ankle?, the flux can be described by a power law E −γ with index γ = 2.70 ± 0.02 (stat) ± 0.1 (sys) followed by a smooth suppression region. Abstract: Airway management is a core competency in anesthesiology training and practice. Residents are taught how to evaluate patients and identify those who may difficulty in securing their airway. The ASA has devised an algorithm on management of those difficult airways. The conservative methods are taught and practiced throughout training. However, the default last resort is obtaining an invasive airway. It is this potentially life-saving, procedure that residents may graduate and have never performed clinically. In our institution, the Anesthesiology Critical Care Division routinely performs percutaneous tracheostomies throughout the hospital. As residents began to inquire, they too were folded into this service to provide real hands on experience. After 3 years we sought to determine if residents perceived this hands-on training to be a benefit.We devised a multi-question survey and distributed to our 131 residents. The purpose of the survey was to determine of those who participated in the tracheostomy service if they felt this was of benefit, which specialists they could look to should an invasive airway be needed and if they felt this exposure gave them greater confidence to perform an emergency invasive airway.In unanimity, the residents all felt that this training was both beneficial and essential in their training. However, none of the residents felt this training had adequately prepared them to actually perform this procedure in an emergency.The residents felt this was an essential aspect of their anesthesiology training. However they did not feel they obtained invasive airway competence. We postulate the residents relatively limited exposure may have been the cause. While we do not know the impact of this training in residency on management of a future difficult airway, the residents uniformly felt this was vital in their clinical curriculum and should be universal.

Abstract: Proposed legislation to require athletic organizations to cover athletes’ health insurance policies for life., Currently there are few insurance policies designed for NCAA and NFL athletes, none of which include the option of lifetime insurance. Injuries sustained during play can lead to complications long after an athlete’s career has ended. We discuss the currently enacted health insurance policies, why they are insufficient, and propose an alternative policy. We have proposed legislation that would require lifetime health insurance for collegiate and professional athletics and have sent it to Congress.

Abstract: A densification process called reactive hydrothermal liquid-phase densification ( rHLPD), based on principles of hydrothermal reaction, infiltration, reactive crystallization, and liquid-phase sintering, is presented. rHLPD can be used to form monolithic ceramic components at low temperatures. The densification of barium titanate-titania composite monoliths was studied to demonstrate proof of concept for this densification model. Permeable, green titania (anatase) compacts were infiltrated with aqueous barium hydroxide solutions and reacted under hydrothermal conditions in the temperature range 90°C-240°C. The effects of reaction time and temperature on the conversion of titania (anatase) into barium titanate were studied. Utilizing a 72 h reaction at 240°C between l.0 M Ba( OH)2, an anatase (TiO2) powder compact, and a corresponding Ba/Ti ratio of 1.5, it was possible to crystallize a composite 95 wt% (88 mol%) BaTiO3 and 5 wt% (12 mol%) TiO2. The composite had a relative density of ~90% with a compressive strength of 172 ± 21 MPa and a flexural strength of 49 ± 4 MPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: ABSTRACTThe accuracy of detection of genital Neisseria gonorrhoeaeinfection in pooled urine samples by ligase chain reaction (LCR) was examined in three populations. Firstly, urine specimens from 300 female military recruits (FMR) were tested by LCR individually and in pools of four and six. Secondly, 300 urine specimens from middle-school students (MSS) were tested individually by LCR, and then the processed specimens were stored frozen for subsequent testing in pools of 4 and 10. Thirdly, 600 frozen urine specimens from high-school students (HSS) were tested by using the LCR pooling algorithm, i.e., testing processed specimens in pools of four in one test unit dose, and retesting individual specimens from positive pools. Finally, the pooling algorithm results were compared to culture results for a subset of 344 students from the original 600 HSS from whom cervical or urethral samples were taken at the discretion of the school nurse practitioners. Compared to individual testing of specimens by LCR in the FMR population, the pooling-by-four algorithm was 100% sensitive (5 of 5) and 100% pool specific (70 of 70), and the pool-by-six algorithm was 100% sensitive (5 of 5) and 100% pool specific (45 of 45). In the MSS population, the pool-by-4 algorithm was 95.8% sensitive (23 of 24) and 100% (52 of 52) pool specific, and the pool-by-10 algorithm was 95.8% sensitive (23 of 24) and 100% (17 of 17) pool specific. In the subset of 344 HSS from whom endocervical or urethral specimens were collected for culture, 31 were positive by LCR in urine and 26 were positive by culture. After results discrepant between culture and LCR were adjudicated by a confirmatory LCR test, the pooling algorithm was 93.8% (30 of 32) sensitive and 99.7% (311 of 312) specific. Culture from these 344 HSS was 81.3% (26 of 32) sensitive. The pooling algorithm reduced the cost of the N. gonorrhoeaeLCR assay by 60% compared to individual testing of the HSS specimens and was both sensitive and specific.

Abstract: ABSTRACTThe accuracy of pooling urine samples for the detection of genitalChlamydia trachomatisinfection by ligase chain reaction (LCR) was examined. A model was also developed to determine the number of samples to be pooled for optimal cost savings at various population prevalences. Estimated costs included technician time, laboratory consumables, and assay costs of testing pooled samples and retesting individual specimens from presumptive positive pools. Estimation of population prevalence based on the pooled LCR results was also applied. After individual urine specimens were processed, 568 specimens were pooled by 4 into 142 pools and another 520 specimens were pooled by 10 into 52 pools. For comparison, all 1,088 urine specimens were tested individually. The sample-to-cut-off ratio was lowered from 1.0 to 0.2 for pooled samples, after a pilot study which tested 148 samples pooled by 4 was conducted. The pooling algorithm was 100% (48 of 48) sensitive when samples were pooled by 4 and 98.4% (61 of 62) sensitive when samples were pooled by 10. Although 2.0% (2 of 99) of the negative pools of 4 and 7.1% (1 of 14) of the negative pools of 10 tested presumptive positive, all samples in these presumptive-positive pools were negative when retested individually, making the pooling algorithm 100% specific. In a population with 8% genital C. trachomatisprevalence, pooling by four would reduce costs by 39%. The model demonstrated that with a lower prevalence of 2%, pooling eight samples would reduce costs by 59%. Pooling urine samples for detection of C. trachomatisby LCR is sensitive, specific, and cost saving compared to testing individual samples.

94. Arrival Direction Probabilities of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays with the Pierre Auger Observatory and Progress Toward an in-situ Cross-calibration of Auger and Telescope Array Surface Detector Stations

Abstract: The origin and nature of ultra-high energy cosmic rays is an open question in astrophysics since their discovery in the 1960s. Observed energies of these primary particles can approach greater than 10x the center of mass energies achieved at modern collider facilities, and there is presently no consensus for an astrophysical mechanism capable of reaching these energies. The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory, spanning ~3,000 km², dedicated to this problem. After initial acceleration, the primary trajectory from source to solar system is not rectilinear due to magnetic deflection. This dissertation investigates how uncertainties of a modern galactic magnetic field model translate into arrival direction uncertainties for E>50 EeV events using a sensitivity analysis approach. In most cases it's found that uncertainties from B-field model dominate compared to observation systematic errors. Furthermore, the angular extent of 1σ arrival direction contours is found to enclose many potential astrophysical objects, making it difficult to isolate individual sources. Implications for anisotropy studies are also briefly discussed.To enable full-sky coverage, Auger data can be combined with the Telescope Array Project, a similar array operating in the northern hemisphere. In both experiments most data are generated from the surface-detector (SD) array. The TA and Auger experiments use different SD station designs, giving them different sensitivities to extensive air-shower components. We seek to understand and cross-validate these complementary detectors on a hardware level using an in-situ approach to observe the same air showers. We describe the technical details associated with installing the detectors, data acquisition, and analysis of signals for this first stage of the Auger@TA project. Integrated signals are compared to a collection of models, and in general are found to agree with expectations. For a subsample of events air-shower parameters are available, and a sophisticated simulation is run to predict the expected response of the two detectors, which is compared to observed data. These simulations appear to show some discrepancy. Characterizing and understanding the discrepancies will be important for taking full advantage of future planned upgrades to both experiments, especially in the context of atomic composition measurements.

Abstract: Background: Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that may be associated with comorbidities, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), given common immunopathogenic mechanisms. Whether PsO patients are more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) signs and symptoms has not been well-characterized. Understanding their prevalence in PsO patients may inform strategies to evaluate for GI signs and symptoms, screen for those at risk for IBD, and guide choice of therapy. Objective: To assess the prevalence of GI signs and symptoms in patients with moderate-to-severe PsO. Methods: An Internet-based survey was conducted to evaluate GI signs and symptoms in patients with self-reported moderate-to-severe PsO and non-PsO controls. The impact of PsO severity and presence of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) [self-reported and/or screened positive on the Psoriatic Arthritis Screening and Evaluation (PASE) questionnaire] on prevalence of GI signs and symptoms was also assessed. The survey included questions about PsO, comorbidities, demographics, and GI signs and symptoms. Questions related to GI signs and symptoms were used to calculate a modified CalproQuest* score to identify patients at increased risk for IBD. Results: Survey responses were collected from 740 PsO patients and 1411 non-PsO controls. With the exception of age, demographics were generally comparable between groups. All six GI signs and symptoms assessed (belly pain, feeling full/bloated, diarrhea, mucus in stool, blood in stool, and unintentional weight loss) were more prevalent in PsO patients compared with non-PsO controls, and a higher proportion of PsO patients also had a positive CalproQuest* result. In addition, both more severe PsO and concomitant PsA were associated with a higher prevalence of GI signs and symptoms and a positive CalproQuest*. Conclusions: This study suggests that PsO patients, including those with PsA, have a higher prevalence of GI signs and symptoms. 99. Do Anesthesia Residents perceive a Benefit from participating in Bedside Tracheostomies?

Abstract: Background: Airway management is a core competency in anesthesiology training and practice. Residents are taught how to evaluate patients and identify those who may difficulty in securing their airway. The ASA has devised an algorithm on management of those difficult airways. The conservative methods are taught and practiced throughout training. However, the default last resort is obtaining an invasive airway. It is this potentially life-saving, procedure that residents may graduate and have never performed clinically. In our institution, the Anesthesiology Critical Care Division routinely performs percutaneous tracheostomies throughout the hospital. As residents began to inquire, they too were folded into this service to provide real hands on experience. After 3 years we sought to determine if residents perceived this hands-on training to be a benefit., Methods: We devised a multi-question survey and distributed to our 131 residents. The purpose of the survey was to determine of those who participated in the tracheostomy service if they felt this was of benefit, which specialists they could look to should an invasive airway be needed and if they felt this exposure gave them greater confidence to perform an emergency invasive airway., Results: In unanimity, the residents all felt that this training was both beneficial and essential in their training. However, none of the residents felt this training had adequately prepared them to actually perform this procedure in an emergency., Conclusions: The residents felt this was an essential aspect of their anesthesiology training. However they did not feel they obtained invasive airway competence. We postulate the residents relatively limited exposure may have been the cause. While we do not know the impact of this training in residency on management of a future difficult airway, the residents uniformly felt this was vital in their clinical curriculum and should be universal.
