An adaptive moving mesh finite element method is proposed for the numerical solution of the regularized long wave (RLW) equation. A moving mesh strategy based on the so-called moving mesh PDE is used to adaptively move the mesh to improve computational accuracy and efficiency. The RLW equation represents a class of partial differential equations containing spatial-time mixed derivatives. For the numerical solution of those equations, a $C^0$ finite element method cannot apply directly on a moving mesh since the mixed derivatives of the finite element approximation may not be defined. To avoid this difficulty, a new variable is introduced and the RLW equation is rewritten into a system of two coupled equations. The system is then discretized using linear finite elements in space and the fifth-order Radau IIA scheme in time. A range of numerical examples in one and two dimensions, including the RLW equation with one or two solitary waves and special initial conditions that lead to the undular bore and solitary train solutions, are presented. In this paper, we present a high order conservative semi-Lagrangian (SL) Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) method for the Vlasov equation based on dimensional splitting [Cheng and Knorr, Journal of Computational Physics, 22(1976)]. The major advantage of HWENO reconstruction, compared with the original WENO reconstruction, is compact. For the split one-dimensional equation, to ensure local mass conservation, we propose a high order SL HWENO scheme in a conservative flux-difference form, following the work in [J.-M. Qiu and A. Christlieb, Journal of Computational Physics, v229(2010)]. Besides performing dimensional splitting for the original 2D problem, we design a proper splitting for equations of derivatives to ensure local mass conservation of the proposed HWENO scheme. The proposed fifth order SL HWENO scheme with the Eulerian CFL condition has been tested to work well in capturing filamentation structures without introducing oscillations. We introduce WENO limiters to control oscillations when the time stepping size is larger than the Eulerian CFL restriction. We perform classical numerical tests on rigid body rotation problem, and demonstrate the performance of our scheme via the Landau damping and two-stream instabilities when solving the Vlasov-Poisson system.

We illustrate that numerical solutions of high order finite volume Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme for some nonconvex conservation laws perform poorly or converge to the entropy solution in a slow speed. The modified finite volume HWENO schemes based either on first order monotone schemes or a second order entropic projection following the work of Qiu and Shu [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 31 (2008), 584-607] are proposed and compared for solving one-dimensional scalar problems. We extend the modified finite volume HWENO based on first order monotone schemes for one-dimensional systems and two-dimensional scalar conservation laws. Numerical tests for several representative examples will be reported.

A hybrid LDG-HWENO scheme is proposed for the numerical solution of KdV-type partial differential equations. It evolves the cell averages of the physical solution and its moments (a feature of Hermite WENO) while discretizes high order spatial derivatives using the local DG method. The new scheme has the advantages of both LDG and HWENO methods, including the ability to deal with high order spatial derivatives and the use of a small number of global unknown variables. The latter is independent of the order of the scheme and the spatial order of the underlying differential equations. One and two dimensional numerical examples are presented to show that the scheme can attain the same formal high order accuracy as the LDG method.

A mesh condition is developed for linear finite element approximations of anisotropic diffusion-convection-reaction problems to satisfy a discrete maximum principle. Loosely speaking, the condition requires that the mesh be simplicial and $\mathcal{O}(\|\V{b}\|_\infty h + \|c\|_\infty h^2)$-nonobtuse when the dihedral angles are measured in the metric specified by the inverse of the diffusion matrix, where $h$ denotes the mesh size and $\V{b}$ and $c$ are the coefficients of the convection and reaction terms. In two dimensions, the condition can be replaced by a weaker mesh condition (an $\mathcal{O}(\|\V{b}\|_\infty h + \|c\|_\infty h^2)$ perturbation of a generalized Delaunay condition). This paper reports high resolution simulations using a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme with a third order TVD Runge-Kutta time stepping method to examine the features of detonation front and physics in square ducts. The simulations suggest that two and three-dimensional detonation wave front formations are greatly enhanced by the presence of transverse waves. The motion of transverse waves generates triple points (zones of high pressure and large velocity coupled together), which cause the detonation front to become locally overdriven and thus form "hot spots". The transversal motion of these hot spots maintains the detonation to continuously occur along the whole front in two and three-dimensions. The present simulations indicate that the influence of the transverse waves on detonation is more profound in three dimensions and the pattern of quasi-steady detonation fronts also depends on the duct size. For a narrow duct (4LX4L where L is the half reaction length), the detonation front displays a distinctive "spinning" motion about the axial direction with a well-defined period. For a wider duct (20LX20L), the detonation front exhibits a "rectangular mode" periodically, with the front displaying "convex" and "concave" shapes one following the other and the transverse waves on the four walls being partly out-of-phase with each other., Comment: 31 pages. 14 figuees
