Food insecurity is a public health concern that affects children worldwide, yet it represents a particular burden for low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to utilize machine learning to identify the associations between food insecurity and nutrient intake among children aged 5 to 18 years. The study’s sample encompassed 1040 participants selected from a 2022 food insecurity household conducted in the West Bank, Palestine. The results indicated that food insecurity was significantly associated with dietary nutrient intake and sociodemographic factors, such as age, gender, income, and location. Indeed, 18.2% of the children were found to be food-insecure. A significant correlation was evidenced between inadequate consumption of various nutrients below the recommended dietary allowance and food insecurity. Specifically, insufficient protein, vitamin C, fiber, vitamin B12, vitamin B5, vitamin A, vitamin B1, manganese, and copper intake were found to have the highest rates of food insecurity. In addition, children residing in refugee camps experienced significantly higher rates of food insecurity. The findings emphasize the multilayered nature of food insecurity and its impact on children, emphasizing the need for personalized interventions addressing nutrient deficiencies and socioeconomic factors to improve children’s health and well-being.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of the global food system, sending shockwaves across countries' societies and economy. This has presented formidable challenges to sustaining a healthy and resilient lifestyle. The objective of this study is to examine the food consumption patterns and assess diet diversity indicators, primarily focusing on the food consumption score (FCS), among households in 38 countries both before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 37 207 participants (mean age: 36.70 ± 14.79, with 77 % women) was conducted in 38 countries through an online survey administered between April and June 2020. The study utilized a pre-tested food frequency questionnaire to explore food consumption patterns both before and during the COVID-19 periods. Additionally, the study computed Food Consumption Score (FCS) as a proxy indicator for assessing the dietary diversity of households. Findings: This quantification of global, regional and national dietary diversity across 38 countries showed an increment in the consumption of all food groups but a drop in the intake of vegetables and in the dietary diversity. The household's food consumption scores indicating dietary diversity varied across regions. It decreased in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, including Lebanon (p

Background: The prevalence of dysglycemia among adolescents and younger children has been rising, yet health professionals are still unaware of the significance of this problem. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) records, most diabetic children under the age of 20 in Palestine are classified as type 1; nonetheless, very limited data are available for policymakers to frame cost-effective screening programs. This study aims to determine the prevalence of dysglycemia in a sample of obese and overweight Palestinian adolescents, identify risk factors associated with dysglycemia, and examine risk factors variance by gender. Methods: A cross-sectional sample of observed obese and overweight adolescents was selected from public schools in the Hebron governorate. Informed consent, physical examination, anthropometric, and laboratory tests (Random Blood Glucose Level (BGL) and fasting BGL ) were performed on a sample of 511 students (44.6% boys and 55.4% girls) aged 13–18-years (13-15 years =46.2% and 16-18 years =53.8%). Results: The prevalence of confirmed overweight and obese cases was 73.2%, and dysglycemia prevalence among the confirmed cases was 3.7% (5.3% boys and 2.5% girls). The BMI classifications of the dysglycemic children indicated that 42.1% were overweight and 31.1% were obese. Furthermore, 64.6% reported high systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure readings. Conclusions: The results of this study provide valuable information about the rising problem of dysglycemia among Palestinian adolescents and underlines the need for rapid screening programs and protocols for early detection and classification of the disease, leading to initiation of early prevention and treatment plans.

Abstract Background Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common among diabetic patients and represent hidden and mysterious morbidity. The pathophysiology of LUTS among diabetes mellitus (DM) patients is multifactorial. Importantly, LUTS is known to cause physical and psychological distress. Thus, this study describes LUTS among DM patients, investigates factors that may associate with it, and assesses the possible relationship between LUTS and the quality of life of diabetics. Methods Over 6 months, data were collected from 378 diabetic patients in primary health care clinics. Demographic and clinical characteristics, Urogenital Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6), and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-7 (IIQ-7) were used to collect data. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results Three hundred seventy-eight participants were included in this study. (29.9%) were (58–67) years old. 49% were female. Half of the cohort was overweight, and a third were obese. 81% were Type 2 DM. Almost all of them are on medical treatment. A median score of 5.50 (2.00–8.00) for the UDI-6 scale and a median score of 5 (0.00–10.00) for the IIQ-7 scale were reported. Multiple linear regression models showed that residency (p = 0.038) and regular exercise (p = 0.001) were significantly and negatively correlated with the UDI-6 score, while female gender (p = 0.042), insulin use (p = 0.009) and the presence of comorbidities (p = 0.007) were positively correlated with this score. Furthermore, age (p = 0.040) and body mass index (BMI) (p

The objective of this study is to prepare magnetic composites as adsorbents for Cr(VI) from wastewater. The prepared composites are magnetic activated carbon (M-AC), magnetic ash (M-ASH), and magnetic sand (M-SAND). These composites were characterized using XRF, FTIR, XRD, and TGA, and then tested as adsorbents for toxic Cr(VI) ions from synthetic wastewater. The elemental analysis of the composites showed a crucial increment in the Fe content of about 6425%, 3600%, and 93% for M-SAND, M-AC, and M-Ash, respectively. Their FTIR spectrum showed the existence of the Fe–O bond vibration, indicating the presence of Fe3O4 particles as confirmed by the XRD pattern. The pseudo-second-order model best described the adsorption kinetic results and the Redlich-Peterson isotherm model accurately described the equilibrium data of ion adsorption by the three composites at 25 and 40 °C with relatively high values of R2. The composites showed their highest adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) ions at 40 °C with an average adsorption capacity of the composites was about 50 mg/g. These relatively high values demonstrate the adsorption ability of the magnetic composites and present a strategy to use the adsorption process for Cr(VI) ions by these composites as efficient adsorbents.

Cardiology ,Medicine - Abstract
Inflammation promotes adverse ventricular remodeling, a common antecedent of heart failure. Here, we set out to determine how inflammatory cells affect cardiomyocytes in the remodeling heart. Pathogenic cardiac macrophages induced an IFN response in cardiomyocytes, characterized by upregulation of the ubiquitin-like protein IFN-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), which posttranslationally modifies its targets through a process termed ISGylation. Cardiac ISG15 is controlled by type I IFN signaling, and ISG15 or ISGylation is upregulated in mice with transverse aortic constriction or infused with angiotensin II; rats with uninephrectomy and DOCA-salt, or pulmonary artery banding; cardiomyocytes exposed to IFNs or CD4+ T cell–conditioned medium; and ventricular tissue of humans with nonischemic cardiomyopathy. By nanoscale liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, we identified the myofibrillar protein filamin-C as an ISGylation target. ISG15 deficiency preserved cardiac function in mice with transverse aortic constriction and led to improved recovery of mouse hearts ex vivo. Metabolomics revealed that ISG15 regulates cardiac amino acid metabolism, whereas ISG15 deficiency prevented misfolded filamin-C accumulation and induced cardiomyocyte autophagy. In sum, ISG15 upregulation is a feature of pathological ventricular remodeling, and protein ISGylation is an inflammation-induced posttranslational modification that may contribute to heart failure development by altering cardiomyocyte protein turnover.

Strengthening food and nutrition literacy among Arab teenagers are important promising empowering tools which can protect them from malnutrition. This study aims to assess the nutrition literacy status of adolescents with the food literacy of their parents in 10 Arab countries.MethodsThis cross-sectional study involving a convenient sample of 5,401 adolescent-parent dyads (adolescents: mean age ± SD: 15.9 ± 3.0, females: 46.8%; parents: mean age ± SD: 45.0 ± 9.1, mothers: 67.8%) was launched between 29 April and 6 June 2022 in 10 Arab nations. The Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale (ANLS) and the Short Food Literacy Questionnaire (SFLQ) were used to meet the study aims.ResultsMore than one-quarter (28%) of adolescents had poor nutrition literacy, with 60% of their parents being food illiterate. The top three countries with nutritionally” less literate” adolescents were Qatar (44%), Lebanon (37.4%), and Saudi Arabia (34.9%). Adolescents’ age, gender, education level, primary caregivers, employment status, and the inclusion of nutrition education in the schools’ curriculum predicted the nutrition literacy levels of Arab adolescents. Besides, parental weight status, health status, parent’s food literacy level, and the number of children per household were significant determinants too. Adolescents studying at a university and having parents with adequate food literacy had the highest odds of being nutritionally literate (OR = 4.5, CI = 1.8–11.5, p = 0.001, OR = 1.8, CI = 1.6–2.1, p

- Abstract
Herein, stacked films of WO3 separated by indium nanosheets are fabricated as quad‐band antennas suitable for high‐frequency applications. The amorphous WO3 films and indium nanosheets are coated onto each other using the thermal evaporation technique under a high vacuum pressure of 10−5 mbar. The stacked layers of Pt/WO3/In/WO3/Pt are structurally and electrically characterized. The tunneling‐type quad‐band antennas are tested in the driving frequency domain of 0.01–1.80 GHz and a low signal amplitude of 0.10 V. It is observed that the insertion of indium nanosheets between layers of WO3 remarkably increases the width of the tunneling barrier from 55 to 70 nm without altering the tunneling barrier height. This also enhances the cutoff frequency at a quad‐band frequency of 1.80 GHz from 10 GHz to 1.46 THz and increases the return loss values from ≈5 to 21 dB. A widely tunable cutoff frequency extending from 0.30 GHz to 1.46 THz can be obtained based on the selected driving signal frequency. The microwave‐controlling features of the Pt/WO3/In/WO3/Pt devices, with their high cutoff frequency and high power transmission ratios at the quad‐band frequency, make them attractive for 6G technology. - Abstract
Herein a new class of optoelectronic devices beneficial for infrared light absorption and high‐frequency application in the terahertz frequency domain are designed and fabricated. The devices are formed by coating a highly transparent thin layer of Nb2O5 onto a selenium‐thin film to form Se/Nb2O5 (SNO) optical interfaces. Although coating of Nb2O5 nanosheets decreased the crystallite sizes and increased the strain and defect concentration in the hexagonal structured Se films, they successfully increased the light absorption by ≈148% in the infrared range of light. A blueshift in the energy band gap of Se from 2.02 to 2.30 eV is observed. The coating of the Nb2O5 onto Se suppressed the free carrier absorption in Se and Nb2O5. As dielectric active layers, SNO interfaces showed a major resonance dielectric peak centered at 1.67 eV. The optical conductivity and terahertz cutoff frequency analyses which are handled using the Drude‐Lorentz approach revealed the highest drift mobility and free carrier concentration of 17.17 cm2 Vs−1 and 5.0 ×1017$ \times \ {{10}^{17}}$ cm−3 when an oscillator of energy of 1.75 eV is activated. In addition, the terahertz cutoff frequency spectra which varied in the range of 4.0–131 THz showed the suitability of the SNO devices for terahertz technology and other optoelectronics. - Abstract
Herein thin films of bismuth oxide are doped with iron by the thermal deposition technique under a vacuum pressure of 10–5 mbar. The doping content varied in the range of 3.0 wt.% to 13.0 wt.%. It is found that undoped and Fe-doped Bi2O3 films exhibited monoclinic structure with lattice parameters of a = 7.9765 A ∘ , b = 7.1253 A ∘ , c = 4.5964 A ∘ and β = 102. 203 ∘ and space group 8 / L c 140 . Fe-doping below the solubility limit (13.0 wt %) resulted in smaller crystallites, larger strains and larger defect densities. Above the solubility limits orthorhombic Fe2O3 occupied 30.6% of the total phase of Bi2O3 films. Fe-doped Bi2O3 films showed lower dielectric constant value, lower electrical conductivities and larger microwave cutoff frequencies. Analyses of the ac conductivity spectra indicated that the ac conduction is dominated by the correlated barrier hopping. The increased doping level below the solubility limit decreased the density of localized states near Fermi level and increased the correlated barrier height. It is also observed that 3.0 wt% of Fe can improve the cutoff frequency from 133 to 160 GHz. The cutoff frequency spectra of pure and doped samples displayed values that suits 6G waveguides, field effect transistors, and other high-frequency applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, Pt/InSe/Nb2O5/Ag (ISNO) stacked layers are designed as multichannel 5 G/6 G network antennas and negative capacitance (NC) sources. The devices are fabricated using thermal deposition technique to coat Pt/InSe thin films with transparent Nb2O5 dielectric windows. While Pt thin films induce the crystallinity of InSe, the Nb2O5 layer remains amorphous. The impedance spectroscopy studies show that the Pt/InSe/Ag (IS) and (ISNO) antenna channels exhibit resonance–antiresonance peaks at driving frequencies of ≈0.4 and ≈1.1 GHz, respectively. Both the IS and ISNO antenna channels exhibit the NC effect in a wide range of frequency domain. In addition, ISNO antennas show signal transmission above 1.70 GHz with a return loss value of 28 dB and voltage standing wave ratios of 1.20. The range of frequencies over which the antenna performs well (bandwidth) extends from 1.54 to 1.80 GHz. Practical tests of one‐port and two‐port reflection/transmission using a network analyzer operative in the frequency domain of 0.01–6.0 GHz highlight the system's differing isolation and coupling characteristics at 2.43 and 6.0 GHz, respectively. The high levels of isolation at 6.0 GHz assure the suitability of the system for applications requiring minimal reverse transmission and high signal integrity. The NC effect, wide bandwidth, and high signal isolation characteristics are preferable in electronics and 5 G/6 G networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, stacked layers of Nb
2 O5 structured with platinum nanosheets were fabricated to handle multifunctional electro-optic operations. The stacked layers of Nb2 O5 /Pt/Nb2 O5 (NPN) were prepared by the ion coating technique and exhibited an amorphous structure. A remarkable increase in light absorption by more than 480% was achieved via the insertion of Pt nanosheets between layers of Nb2 O5 . Pt nanosheets with thicknesses of 50 nm and 100 nm successfully increased the electrical conductivity of the NPN layers by five and eight orders of magnitude, respectively, without losing transparency. This feature makes the NPN stacks suitable for transparent conducting oxide applications. The insertion of Pt nanosheets between layers of Nb2 O5 also converted the conductivity from p- to n -type. In addition, NPN stacked layers exhibited highly enhanced dielectric properties, demonstrating an increase in the dielectric constant by 190%, making the NPN stacked layers suitable for use in the design of high-κ gate dielectric devices. Moreover, when treated as optical filters, Drude–Lorentz fittings of the dielectric spectra showed that Pt nanosheets increased the free carrier density and the plasmon frequency. The terahertz cutoff frequency of the NPN devices steadily increased with increasing Pt nanosheet thickness. The terahertz cutoff frequency for NPN optical filters comprising a 100-nm-thick layer of Pt displayed values of 7.5 THz and 5.0 THz in the infrared and visible light ranges. The NPN stacks have potential for use in terahertz applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Herein, films of barium antimonides (BaSb) are fabricated by a thermal deposition technique under a vacuum pressure of 10−5 mbar. BaSb films exhibit orthorhombic lattice. Over a wide range of scans, the films are mostly stoichiometric, displaying atomic contents of 50.17 and 49.83 at% for Ba and Sb, respectively. Morphological analyses of these films show the growth of large grains with sizes ranging from 1.64 to 4.14 μm. Dynamic electrical measurements on Ag/BaSb/Ag films are conducted in the frequency domain of 0.01–1.80 GHz. The films display features of voltage‐controlled negative capacitance source (VCNC) and resonance–antiresonance peaks at a critical frequency of 1.64 GHz. Lorentz models spectral analyses on these peaks indicate that they correspond to a high‐frequency capacitance value of 2.8 nF, a density of oscillators of 4 × 1010 cm−3, and a scattering time constant of τ = 100 ns. Additionally, Ag/BaSb/Ag films show a wide variety in the cutoff frequency spectra, making them suitable for high‐frequency applications. The cutoff frequency varies from 2.6 GHz to 1.0 THz as driving frequency increases from 1.0 to 1.64 GHz. The features of VCNC sources, resonance–antiresonance behavior, and high cutoff frequency make BaSb thin films promising for thin‐film transistors and 6 G technology applications. Herein, niobium pentoxide (Nb
2 O5 ) nanosheets grown by the thermal evaporation technique under a vacuum pressure of 10− 5 mbar are treated as terahertz band filters. The amorphous thin layers of Nb2 O5 exhibited high light transmittance and showed optical absorption within an energy band gap of 3.68 eV. The band gap contained wide-extended band tails with Urbach energy of 2.27 eV. As terahertz optical band filters, Nb2 O5 nanosheets displayed a cutoff frequency of ~ 1.0 THz in the spectral range of 1.15–3.37 eV. Larger exciting light signals in the ultraviolet range increased the terahertz cutoff frequency from 1.2 THz to 170 THz as the light energy increased from 3.38 eV to 4.20 eV, respectively. Additionally, the fitting of the optical conductivity using the Drude-Lorentz model has shown that the optical conduction in Nb2 O5 is associated with six optical oscillators. Two of these oscillators are dominant in the infrared range of light, three are active in the visible range, and one is sensitive to ultraviolet light radiation. The drift mobility of the charge carriers in the films varied in the ranges of 1.76–3.67 cm2 /Vs. Electrical verification of the optical results was actualized through the design of Yb/p-Nb2 O5 /Ag band filters. This electrical device showed a negative capacitance effect and exhibited a cutoff frequency of 1.0 THz when a driving signal of frequency 0.597 GHz was imposed between the terminals of the device. These features prove the suitability of the terahertz band filters of Nb2 O5 nanosheets for use as optical and electrical filters with an extremely wide range of tunability.
