- Abstract
Spectral line emission from the deuterium Balmer alpha line and from molecular deuterium in the Fulcher band, d(3)Pi(u)-> a(3)Sigma(+)(g), was studied in the outer divertor region of the ASDEX Upgrade plasma with a pair of relatively calibrated spectrometers. A dependence of the signals on the proximity of the plasma strike point and on divertor gas puffing was noted. The rotational spectrum of the lowest diagonal vibrational molecular bands indicated rotational temperatures of ca. 1000 K and hence, through calculation of relative upper state populations, a ground state vibrational temperature of ca. 4000 K. Calculating the particle fluxes, the molecular deuterium was found to contribute up to 1% of the D alpha intensity, the relative importance of the molecules at some divertor heights was affected by the position of the strike point., QC 20100810

Abstract: To investigate the combined effect of re-deposition, re-erosion and local transport, known quantities of 13CH4 were puffed at the end of the 2007 experimental campaign in the ASDEX Upgrade outboard divertor. Exposed tiles were carefully removed for analysis. The amount of 13C locally deposited was measured by nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) and colorimetry. About 100% of injected carbon is deposited within a ±15cm extension in the toroidal direction. In contrast to H-mode results where re-deposition was exclusively downstream, in L-mode, more than one third of the injected hydrocarbon is found upstream. Colorimetric analysis of images taken with different lighting angles to the surface reveals a strong asymmetry in the carbon deposition pattern with respect to the injection facing/averting side of the surface roughness, with 4× thicker layers on the side facing the puffing location. The deposition pattern deviates clearly from the magnetic trajectories showing the effect of downward and radial drifts. ERO modelling of a similar experiment carried out in 2003 in H-mode background plasma can nicely reproduce the toroidal deposition pattern but drifts are not yet satisfactory described. Hydrocarbon injection experiments have been performed to investigate the chemical sputtering yield of carbon-fibre composites at elevated temperatures (T-surface similar or equal to 500 K) and detached plasma conditions in the JET outer divertor. A plasma scenario in L-mode with the outer strike-point positioned on the load bearing septum replacement plate was developed to detach the outer divertor leg and to provide the strong recombining target plasma. The operational window was explored in a set of discharges with strong deuterium puffing into the private-flux region. Langmuir probes showed a clear roll-over in the ion flux up to complete plasma detachment at the target plate during the density ramp of the discharge. Paschen recombination line analysis shows strong volume recombination with electron temperatures below 2.0 eV prior to the appearance of a radiation instability - an X-point Marfe. A strong reduction of the intrinsic CD photon flux was observed under these conditions, whereas local CD4 injection still led to CD photon flux emission. This provides conclusive evidence for a reduction of the hydrocarbon flux and the chemical sputtering under detached plasma conditions. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: To investigate material transport in scrape-off layer plasma and in/out asymmetries in divertor, 13CH4 was puffed at the end of 2002/2003 experimental campaign into ASDEX Upgrade from the outer mid-plane. Ex-situ analyses of the tiles were performed by secondary ion mass spectrometry and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The highest amount of 13C was detected at the top of inner divertor, and below the inner and outer strike points towards the roof baffle. The 13C peaks below the strike points correlate with thick long term deposition layers detected in ion beam analysis experiments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Since the last IAEA conference, the scientific programme of JET has focused on the qualification of the integrated operating scenarios for ITER and on physics issues essential for the consolidation of design choices and the efficient exploitation of ITER. Particular attention has been given to the characterization of the edge plasma, pedestal energy and edge localized modes (ELMs), and their impact on plasma facing components (PFCs). Various ELM mitigation techniques have been assessed for all ITER operating scenarios using active methods such as resonant magnetic field perturbation, rapid variation of the radial field and pellet pacing. This paper presents an overview of recent experimental results obtained on the RFX device. We succeeded in obtaining and study RFP plasma with a plasma current up to 1 MA with negligible radiation losses and low effective charge. The local power and particle balance shows that in standard operation the plasma core is dominated by magnetic turbulence and that the global confinement is mainly provided by the edge region where a strongly sheared radial electric field is present. With poloidal current drive the amplitude of magnetic fluctuation and the thermal conductivity of the plasma core are reduced leading to improved confinement. Reduced heat transport is also observed when the width of the n spectrum of magnetic fluctuations is reduced.

The radial particle diffusion coefficient D of the RFP experiment RFX has been derived from particle balance in the local scrape-off layer created by an instrumented limiter inserted into the edge region. The parallel particle flux incident on the limiter and its spatial decay are measured by Langmuir probes, whereas the connection lengths between the limiter and the wall are inferred from the images of a CCD camera with a H α and N II filter, and ion sources are taken into account. The measured values of D are in the range 10–20 m 2 /s for plasma current in the range 300–400 kA. The radial profile of D exhibits a maximum close to the wall and it decreases to lower values at r / a around 0.90. The value of D and its profile at the edge appear to be consistent with those derived from the electrostatic turbulence driven particle flux and from the local density profile. The results are discussed in terms of the diffusion mechanism in the edge plasma and in the scrape-off layer, by assessing the perturbation produced by the limiter insertion.
