Abstract

A high-resolution stratigraphic analysis of the Upper Cretaceous Gurpi Formation has been undertaken in the Shahneshin section (Zagros Basin, Iran). New results on calcareous nannofossils, planktic foraminifers, dinoflagellate cysts and high-resolution carbon and oxygen stable isotopes form the basis of a reference section for the eastern Tethys that spans the upper Coniacian to the late Danian. Carbon-isotope correlation to Gubbio, Italy and the NW German chalk allows for the identification of many isotopic events as well as for the definition of new events in the Campanian and Maastrichtian. Our results allow for a review of the accurate position of the Coniacian/Santonian, Santonian/Campanian, and Campanian/Maastrichtian stage boundaries relative to carbon isotopes and plankton bioevents. The reliability of Coniacian to Maastrichtian planktic foraminifer, dinoflagellate cysts and calcareous nannofossil biohorizons is assessed.

Abstract

International audience; The large-scale evolution of neodymium isotopic composition in the global modern and Holocene ocean revealed from seawater data and other records. Kazuyo Tachikawa and project members Neodymium isotopic compositions (143 Nd/ 144 Nd or ε Nd) have been used as a tracer of water masses and lithogenic inputs to the ocean. To further evaluate the faithfulness of this tracer, we have updated a global seawater ε Nd database and combined it with hydrography parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients and oxygen concentrations), carbon isotopic ratio and radiocarbon of dissolved inorganic carbon. Archive ε Nd data are compiled for leachates, foraminiferal tests, deep-sea corals and fish teeth/debris from the Holocene period. At water depths ≥ 1500m, property-property plots show clear correlations between seawater ε Nd and the other variables, suggesting that large-scale water mass mixing is a primary control of deepwater ε Nd distribution. At ≥ 200m, basin-scale seawater T-S-ε Nd diagrams demonstrate the isotopic evolution of different water masses. Seawater and archive ε Nd values are compared using property-property plots and T-S-ε Nd diagrams. Archive values generally agree with corresponding seawater values although they tend to be at the upper limit in the Pacific. Both positive and negative offsets exist in the northern North Atlantic. Applying multiple regression analysis to deep (≥ 1500m) seawater data, we established empirical equations that predict the main, large-scale, deepwater ε Nd trends from hydrography parameters. Large offsets from the predicted values are interpreted as a sign of significant local/regional influence. Dominant continental influence on seawater and archive ε Nd is observed mainly within 1,000 km from the continents. Generally, seawater and archive ε Nd values form gradual latitudinal trend in the Atlantic and Pacific at depths ≥ 600m, consistent with the idea that Nd isotopes help distinguish between northern/southern sourced water contributions at intermediate and deep water depths.

Abstract

International audience; The Mesozoic, perhaps the longest period of warmth during the Phanerozoic Earth history, has been repeatedly affected by short-lived cold interludes lasting about one million years. While the origin of these cold snaps has been classically attributed to a temporary atmospheric CO(2) drawdown, quantified mechanisms explaining these instabilities of the carbon cycle are still lacking. Based on a climate carbon cycle model, we show that the general demise of carbonate platforms accompanying these short-lived cold interludes is a powerful mechanism capable of generating a fast atmospheric CO2 decrease and a moderate sea level drop associated with ice sheet buildup. The temporary nature of the carbonate production decline explains the relative short time of these cold events but makes it possible to account for ice sheet waxing and waning.

7 pages; International audience; Using a coupled climate model of intermediate complexity including oxygen 18, CLIMBER-2, we investigate the evolution of the distribution of surface water $^{18}$O composition under warm climate conditions. We then determine the impact of changes of the surface water $^{18}$O distribution on ocean surface temperatures inferred from calcite oxygen 18. Our results show that published temperature reconstructions based on oxygen 18 from calcite are systematically biased by 2° to 4°C in the absence of major oceanic circulation changes and up to 7°C in the presence of major oceanic circulation changes. As the bias introduced is shown to vary with latitude, our work has major implications on past latitudinal temperature gradient reconstructions based on oxygen 18 measurements.

Abstract

Abstract: Oxygen isotope data from biostratigraphically well-dated oyster shells from the Late Jurassic of the eastern Paris Basin are used to reconstruct the thermal evolution of western Tethyan surface waters during the Early Oxfordian–Early Kimmeridgian interval. Seventy eight oyster shells were carefully screened for potential diagenetic alteration using cathodoluminescence microscopy. Isotope analyses were performed on non-luminescent parts of shells (n =264). Intra-shell δ18O variability was estimated by microsampling along a transect perpendicular to the growth lines of the largest oyster shell. The sinusoidal distribution of the δ18O values along this transect and the dependence of the amplitude of variations with bathymetry suggest that intra-shell variability reflects seasonal variations of temperature and/or salinity. Average amplitudes of about 5 °C in shallow water environments and of about 2–3 °C in deeper offshore environments are calculated. These amplitudes reflect minimum seasonal temperature variation. Our new data allow to constrain existing paleotemperature trends established from fish tooth and belemnite δ18O data and are in better agreement with paleontological data. More specifically, a warming trend of about 3 °C is reconstructed for oceanic surface waters during the Early to Middle Oxfordian transition, with maximum temperatures reaching 24 °C in the transversarium Zone (late Middle Oxfordian). From the transversarium Zone to the bimmamatum Zone, a cooling of about 7 °C is indicated, whereas from the bimmamatum Zone, temperatures increased again by about 7 °C to reach 24 °C in average during the cymodoce Zone (Early Kimmeridgian). Abstract

The oxygen isotope composition of fossil fish teeth, a paleo-upper ocean temperature proxy exceptionally resistant to diagenetic alteration, provides new insight on the evolution of the low- to middle-latitude thermal gradient between the middle Cretaceous climatic optimum and the cooler latest Cretaceous period. The new middle Cretaceous low to middle latitude thermal gradient agrees with that previously inferred from planktonic foraminifera δ18O recovered from Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program drilling sites, although the isotopic temperatures derived from δ18O of fish teeth are uniformly higher by ~3-4 °C. In contrast, our new latest Cretaceous thermal gradient is markedly steeper than those previously published for this period. Fish tooth δ18O data demonstrate that low- to middle-latitude thermal gradients of the middle Cretaceous climatic optimum and of the cooler latest Cretaceous are similar to the modern one, despite a cooling of 7 °C between the two periods. Our new results imply that no drastic changes in meridional heat transport are required to explain the Late Cretaceous climate. Abstract

The article reports on data based on conodont oxygen isotopic composition that reveal a large, long, cooling trend through the Ordovician and abrupt cooling during the Late Ordovician glaciation in the early Paleozoic climate. The weathering of fresh volcanic rocks and continent motion is reportedly responsible for Late Ordovician atmospheric carbon dioxide decrease. The article indicates a 3-degree centigrade mean annual continental temperature fall in the Early Ordovician.
