A Windows NT server cluster upgrade encountered problems due to a faulty power supply that caused spontaneous reboots. Memory problems sometimes caused the server to fail in Powerup Self Test (POST), and the ECC circuitry could not fix them. The power supply did not provide the memory with the power it needed, and the memory corrupted the server's system disk, making the backup cluster member the only thing keeping the system from a total failure. The solution was to replace the power supply and memory in the failing server and rebuild the system disk, but the hardware vendor told the company to ignore the POST memory failures because the server had ECC memory. If a system under warranty or service contract fails a self-test, the vendor should fix it. The vendor's response in this case made a bad situation worse, and eventually the customer had to buy new hardware. Ultimately the company decided that NT was not scalable or reliable enough to meet its enterprisewide needs and moved its critical applications to Unix servers.
