The Dragonfly Galaxy (MRC 0152-209), the most infrared-luminous radio galaxy at redshift z~2, is a merger system containing a powerful radio source and large displacements of gas. We present kpc-resolution data from ALMA and the VLA of carbon monoxide (6-5), dust, and synchrotron continuum, combined with Keck integral-field spectroscopy. We find that the Dragonfly consists of two galaxies with rotating disks that are in the early phase of merging. The radio jet originates from the northern galaxy and brightens when it hits the disk of the southern galaxy. The Dragonfly Galaxy therefore likely appears as a powerful radio galaxy because its flux is boosted into the regime of high-z radio galaxies by the jet-disk interaction. We also find a molecular outflow of (1100 $\pm$ 550) M$_{\odot}$/yr associated with the radio host galaxy, but not with the radio hot-spot or southern galaxy, which is the galaxy that hosts the bulk of the star formation. Gravitational effects of the merger drive a slower and longer lived mass displacement at a rate of (170 $\pm$ 40) M$_{\odot}$/yr, but this tidal debris contain at least as much molecular gas mass as the much faster outflow, namely M(H2) = (3 $\pm$ 1) x 10$^9$ (alpha(CO)/0.8) M$_{\odot}$. This suggests that both the AGN-driven outflow and mass transfer due to tidal effects are important in the evolution of the Dragonfly system. The Keck data show Ly$\alpha$ emission spread across 100 kpc, and CIV and HeII emission across 35 kpc, confirming the presence of a metal-rich and extended circumgalactic medium previously detected in CO(1-0)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (15 pages, 9 figures)

We used Bands 6 and 7 of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Cycles 7 and 8 to search for $\mathrm{CO}\,(3-2)$ emission from a sample of five fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies discovered by the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey and the Fast and Fortunate for FRB Follow-up (F$^4$) team. These galaxies have redshifts $z \approx 0.16-0.48$, masses log$(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})\approx 9.30-10.4$ characteristic of field galaxies, and emission lines indicative of ongoing star formation. We detected three of the five galaxies with luminosities $L'(3-2)\approx0.2-4\times10^8\,\rm K\,km \, s^{-1}\,pc^2$ and set upper limits for the other two. Adopting standard metallicity-dependent CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factors, we estimate molecular gas masses $M_{\rm gas}\approx 0.2-3\times 10^9 \, M_{\odot}$. As a population, FRB host galaxies track the main $M_{\rm star}-M_{\rm gas}$ locus of star-forming galaxies in the present-day universe, with gas fractions of $\mu_{\rm gas}\approx0.1$ and gas depletion times $t_{\rm dep} \gtrapprox 1\,$Gyr. We employ the Kaplan-Meier estimator to compare the redshift-corrected $\mu_{\rm gas}$ and $t_{\rm dep}$ for all known FRB hosts with measurements or upper limits with those from the xCOLD GASS survey and find statistically different gas fractions. The difference is not statistically significant when we consider only the five hosts studied here with consistently determined properties, suggesting more FRB hosts with measured molecular gas masses are needed to robustly study the population. Lastly, we present a multi-wavelength analysis of one host (HG20180924B) combining high-spatial resolution imaging and integral field spectroscopy to demonstrate that future high-resolution observations will allow us to study the host galaxy environments local to the FRBs., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

We introduce a new methodology to study marine heat waves, extreme events in the sea surface temperature (SST) of the global ocean. Motivated by previously large and impactful marine heat waves and by theoretical expectation that the dominant heating processes coherently affect large regions of the ocean, we introduce a methodology from computer vision to construct marine heat wave systems (MWHSs) -- the collation of SST extrema in dimensions of area and time. We identify 649,475 MHWSs in the 37 year period (1983-2019) of daily SST records and find that the duration t_dur (days), maximum area A_max (km$^2$), and total ``volume'' N_vox (days km$^2$) for the majority of MHWSs are well-described by power-law distributions: t_dur^(-3), A_max^(-2) and N_vox^(-2). These characteristics confirm SST extrema exhibit strong spatial coherence that define the formation and evolution of marine heat waves. Furthermore, the most severe MHWSs deviate from these power-laws and are the dominant manifestation of marine heat waves: extrema in ocean heating are driven by the ~200 systems with largest area and duration. We further demonstrate that the previously purported rise in the incidence of marine heat wave events over the past decade is only significant in these severe systems. A change point analysis reveals a rapid increase in days under a severe MHW in most regions of the global ocean over the period of 2000-2005. We extracted ~2.8M nearly cloud-free 144x144 km^2 cutout images from the 2012-2020 Level-2 VIIRS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) dataset to quantitatively compare with MIT ocean general circulation model outputs, specifically the one year LCC4320 1/48 deg global-ocean simulation starting on November 17, 2011, matched in geography and day-of-year to VIIRS observations. We analyzed these cutouts using an unsupervised probabilistic autoencoder (PAE) to learn the SST structure on ~10-to-80 km scales (submesoscale-to-mesoscale). A key finding is that, in general, the LLC4320 simulation accurately reproduces the observed SST patterns, both globally and regionally. Global structure distribution medians match within 2 sigma for 65% of the ocean, despite a modest, latitude-dependent offset. Regionally, model outputs mimic mesoscale SST pattern variations in VIIRS data revealed by PAE, including subtle features influenced by bathymetry variations. There are however some areas showing significant differences in the distribution of SST patterns: (1) near western boundary currents' separation from the continental margin, (2) in the ACC, particularly in the eastern half of the Indian Ocean, and (3) in an equatorial band equatorward of 15 deg. The discrepancy in (1) results from premature separation of simulated western boundary currents. In (2), the Southern Indian Ocean, the model output predicts more structure than observed, possibly due to mixed layer misrepresentation or energy dissipation and stirring inaccuracies in the simulation. The differences in (3), the equatorial band, may also stem from model errors, potentially arising from the simulation's shortness or insufficient high-frequency/wavenumber atmospheric forcing. For over 40 years, remote sensing observations of the Earth's oceans have yielded global measurements of sea surface temperature (SST). With a resolution of approximately 1km, these data trace physical processes like western boundary currents, cool upwelling at eastern boundary currents, and the formation of mesoscale and sub-mesoscale eddies. To discover the fundamental patterns of SST on scales smaller than 10km, we developed an unsupervised, deep contrastive learning model named Nenya. We trained Nenya on a subset of 8 million cloud-free cutout images (~80x80km^2) from the MODIS sensor, with image augmentations to impose invariance to rotation, reflection, and translation. The 256-dimension latent space of Nenya defines a vocabulary to describe the complexity of SST and associates images with like patterns and features. We used a dimensionality reduction algorithm to explore cutouts with a temperature interval of DT=0.5-1K, identifying a diverse set of patterns with temperature variance on a wide range of scales. We then demonstrated that SST data with large-scale features arise preferentially in the Pacific and Atlantic Equatorial Cold Tongues and exhibit a strong seasonal variation, while data with predominantly sub-mesoscale structure preferentially manifest in western boundary currents, select regions with strong upwelling, and along the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. We provide a web-based user interface to facilitate the geographical and temporal exploration of the full MODIS dataset. The FLIMFLAM survey is collecting spectroscopic data of field galaxies near fast radio burst (FRB) sightlines to constrain key parameters describing the distribution of matter in the Universe. In this work, we leverage the survey data to determine the source of the excess extragalactic dispersion measure (DM), compared to the Macquart relation estimate of four FRBs: FRB20190714A, FRB20200430A, FRB20200906A, and FRB20210117A. By modeling the gas distribution around the foreground galaxy halos and galaxy groups of the sightlines, we estimate $\rm DM_{halos}$, their contribution to the FRB dispersion measures. The FRB20190714A sightline shows a clear excess of foreground halos which contribute roughly 2/3$^{rd}$ of the observed excess DM, thus implying a baryon-dense sightline. FRB20200906A shows a smaller but non-negligible foreground halo contribution, and further analysis of the IGM is necessary to ascertain the true cosmic contribution to its DM. We present a sample of well-localised Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) discovered by the MeerTRAP project at the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. We discovered the three FRBs in single coherent tied-array beams and localised them to an area of ~1 arcmin$^2$. We investigate their burst properties, scattering, repetition rates, and localisations in a multi-wavelength context. FRB 20201211A shows hints of scatter broadening but is otherwise consistent with instrumental dispersion smearing. For FRB 20210202D, we discovered a faint post-cursor burst separated by ~200 ms, suggesting a distinct burst component or a repeat pulse. We attempt to associate the FRBs with host galaxy candidates. For FRB 20210408H, we tentatively (0.35 - 0.53 probability) identify a compatible host at a redshift ~0.5. Additionally, we analyse the MeerTRAP survey properties, such as the survey coverage, fluence completeness, and their implications for the FRB population. Based on the entire sample of 11 MeerTRAP FRBs discovered by the end of 2021, we estimate the FRB all-sky rates and their scaling with the fluence threshold. The inferred FRB all-sky rates at 1.28 GHz are $8.2_{-4.6}^{+8.0}$ and $2.1_{-1.1}^{+1.8} \times 10^3$ sky$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$ above 0.66 and 3.44 Jy ms for the coherent and incoherent surveys, respectively. The scaling between the MeerTRAP rates is flatter than at higher fluences at the 1.4-$\sigma$ level. There seems to be a deficit of low-fluence FRBs, suggesting a break or turn-over in the rate versus fluence relation below 2 Jy ms. We speculate on cosmological or progenitor-intrinsic origins. We present the discovery of FRB 20210410D, with the MeerKAT radio interferometer in South Africa, as part of the MeerTRAP commensal project. FRB 20210410D has a dispersion measure DM = 578.78 +/- 2 pc cm-3, and was localised to sub-arcsec precision in the 2s images made from the correlation data products. The localisation enabled the association of the FRB with an optical galaxy at z = 0.1415, which when combined with the DM places it above the 3sigma scatter of the Macquart relation. We attribute the excess DM to the host galaxy after accounting for contributions from the Milky Way's interstellar medium and halo, and the combined effects of the intergalactic medium and intervening galaxies. This is the first FRB that is not associated with a dwarf galaxy, to exhibit a likely large host galaxy DM contribution. We do not detect any continuum radio emission at the FRB position or from the host galaxy down to a 3sigma RMS of 14.4 uJy/beam. The FRB has a scattering delay of 29.4 ms at 1 GHz, and exhibits candidate subpulses in the spectrum, which hint at the possibility of it being a repeating FRB. Although not constraining, we note that this FRB has not been seen to repeat in 7.28h at 1.3 GHz with MeerKAT, 3h at 2.4 GHz with Murriyang and 5.7h at simultaneous 2.3 GHz and 8.4 GHz observations with the Deep Space Network. We present a study of the metal-enriched halo gas, traced using MgII and [OII] emission lines, in two large, blind galaxy surveys - the MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) and the MUSE Ultra Deep Field (MUDF). By stacking a sample of ~600 galaxies (stellar masses M* ~10^{6-12} Msun), we characterize for the first time the average metal line emission from a general population of galaxy haloes at 0.7 <= z <= 1.5. The MgII and [OII] line emission extends farther out than the stellar continuum emission, on average out to ~25 kpc and ~45 kpc, respectively, at a surface brightness (SB) level of 10^{-20} erg/s/cm2/arcsec2. The radial profile of the MgII SB is shallower than that of the [OII], suggesting that the resonant MgII emission is affected by dust and radiative transfer effects. The [OII] to MgII SB ratio is ~3 over ~20-40 kpc, also indicating a significant in situ origin of the extended metal emission. The average SB profiles are intrinsically brighter by a factor ~2-3 and more radially extended by a factor of ~1.3 at 1.0 < z <= 1.5 than at 0.7 <= z <= 1.0. The average extent of the metal emission also increases independently with increasing stellar mass and in overdense group environments. When considering individual detections, we find extended [OII] emission up to ~50 kpc around ~30-40 percent of the group galaxies, and extended (~30-40 kpc) MgII emission around two z~1 quasars in groups, which could arise from outflows or environmental processes., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a comprehensive catalog of observations and stellar population properties for 23 highly secure host galaxies of fast radio bursts (FRBs). Our sample comprises six repeating FRBs and 17 apparent non-repeaters. We present 82 new photometric and eight new spectroscopic observations of these hosts. Using stellar population synthesis modeling and employing non-parametric star formation histories (SFHs), we find that FRB hosts have a median stellar mass of $\approx 10^{9.9}\,M_{\odot}$, mass-weighted age $\approx 5.1$ Gyr, and ongoing star formation rate $\approx 1.3\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ but span wide ranges in all properties. Classifying the hosts by degree of star formation, we find that 87% (20/23 hosts) are star-forming, two are transitioning, and one is quiescent. The majority trace the star-forming main sequence of galaxies, but at least three FRBs in our sample originate in less active environments (two non-repeaters and one repeater). Across all modeled properties, we find no statistically significant distinction between the hosts of repeaters and non-repeaters. However, the hosts of repeating FRBs generally extend to lower stellar masses, and the hosts of non-repeaters arise in more optically luminous galaxies. While four of the galaxies with the most clear and prolonged rises in their SFHs all host repeating FRBs, demonstrating heightened star formation activity in the last $\lesssim 100$ Myr, one non-repeating host shows this SFH as well. Our results support progenitor models with short delay channels (i.e., magnetars formed via core-collapse supernova) for most FRBs, but the presence of some FRBs in less active environments suggests a fraction form through more delayed channels., Comment: 52 pages, 32 figures, 6 tables, submitted

We use 28 quasar fields with high-resolution (HIRES and UVES) spectroscopy from the MUSE Analysis of Gas Around Galaxies survey to study the connection between Ly${\alpha}$ emitters (LAEs) and metal-enriched ionized gas traced by CIV in absorption at redshift $z\approx3-4$. In a sample of 220 CIV absorbers, we identify 143 LAEs connected to CIV gas within a line-of-sight separation ${\rm \pm 500\,km\,s^{-1}}$, equal to a detection rate of $36\pm 5$ per cent once we account for multiple LAEs connected to the same CIV absorber. The luminosity function of LAEs associated with CIV absorbers shows a $\approx 2.4$ higher normalization factor compared to the field. CIV with higher equivalent width and velocity width are associated with brighter LAEs or multiple galaxies, while weaker systems are less often identified near LAEs. The covering fraction in groups is up to $\approx 3$ times larger than for isolated galaxies. Compared to the correlation between optically-thick HI absorbers and LAEs, CIV systems are twice less likely to be found near LAEs especially at lower equivalent width. Similar results are found using SiIV as tracer of ionized gas. We propose three components to model the gas environment of LAEs: i) the circumgalactic medium of galaxies, accounting for the strongest correlations between absorption and emission; ii) overdense gas filaments connecting galaxies, driving the excess of LAEs at a few times the virial radius and the modulation of the luminosity and cross-correlation functions for strong absorbers; iii) an enriched and more diffuse medium, accounting for weaker CIV absorbers farther from galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures, 10 tables. We combine datasets from the CGM$^{2}$ and CASBaH surveys to model a transition point, $R_{\rm cross}$, between circumgalactic and intergalactic media (CGM and IGM, respectively). In total, our data consist of 7244 galaxies at z < 0.5 with precisely measured spectroscopic redshifts, all having impact parameters of 0.01 - 20 comoving Mpc from 28 QSO sightlines with high-resolution UV spectra that cover H I Ly$\alpha$. Our best-fitting model is an exclusionary two-component model that combines a 3D absorber-galaxy cross correlation function with a simple Gaussian profile at inner radii to represent the CGM. By design, this model gives rise to a determination of $R_{\rm cross}$ as a function of galaxy stellar mass, which can be interpreted as the boundary between the CGM and IGM. For galaxies with $10^8 \leq M_{\star}/M_{\odot} \leq 10^{10.5}$, we find that $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star}) \approx 2 \pm 0.6 R_{\rm vir}$. Additionally, we find excellent agreement between $R_{\rm cross}(M_{\star})$ and the theoretically-determined splashback radius for galaxies in this mass range. Overall, our results favor models of galaxy evolution at z < 0.5 that distribute $T \approx 10^{4}$K gas to distances beyond the virial radius., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 17 pages, 8 figures

The "cosmic web", the filamentary large-scale structure in a cold dark matter Universe, is readily apparent via galaxy tracers in spectroscopic surveys. However, the underlying dark matter structure is as of yet unobservable and mapping the diffuse gas permeating it lies beyond practical observational capabilities. A recently developed technique, inspired by the growth and movement of Physarum polycephalum "slime mold", has been used to map the cosmic web of a low redshift sub-sample of the SDSS spectroscopic galaxy catalog. This model, the Monte Carlo Physarum Machine (MCPM) was shown to promisingly reconstruct the cosmic web. Here, we improve the formalism used in calibrating the MCPM to better recreate the Bolshoi-Planck cosmological simulation's density distributions and apply them to a significantly larger cosmological volume than previous works using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, $z < 0.1$) and the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG, $z \lesssim 0.5$) spectroscopic catalogs. We present the "Cosmic Slime Value Added Catalog" which provides estimates for the cosmic overdensity for the sample of galaxies probed spectroscopically by the above SDSS surveys. In addition, we provide the fully reconstructed 3D density cubes of these volumes. These data products were released as part of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 17 and are publicly available. We present the input catalogs and the methodology for constructing these data products. We present the discovery of as-of-yet non-repeating Fast Radio Burst (FRB), FRB 20210117A, with the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) as a part of the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) Survey. The sub-arcsecond localization of the burst led to the identification of its host galaxy at a $z=0.214(1)$. This redshift is much lower than what would be expected for a source dispersion measure (DM) of 729 pc cm$^{-3}$, given typical contributions from the intergalactic medium and the host galaxy. Optical observations reveal the host to be a dwarf galaxy with little on-going star formation, very different to the dwarf host galaxies of known repeating FRBs 20121102A, and 20190520B. We find an excess DM contribution from the host and attribute it to the FRB's local environment. We do not find any radio emission from the FRB site or host galaxy. The low magnetized environment and lack of a persistent radio source (PRS) indicate that the FRB source is older than those found in other dwarf host galaxies, and establish the diversity of FRB sources in dwarf galaxy environments. We find our observations to be fully consistent with the hypernebula model, where the FRB is powered by accretion-jet from a hyper-accreting black hole. Finally, our high-time resolution analysis reveals burst characteristics similar to those seen in repeating FRBs. This study addresses how the incidence rate of strong O VI absorbers in a galaxy's circumgalactic medium (CGM) depends on galaxy mass and, independently, on the amount of star formation in the galaxy. We use HST/COS absorption spectroscopy of quasars to measure O VI absorption within 400 projected kpc and 300 km s$^{-1}$ of 52 $M_{*}\sim 10^{10}$ $M_\odot$ galaxies. The galaxies have redshifts $0.12

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration pulses of radio emission originating from extragalactic distances. Radio dispersion on each burst is imparted by intervening plasma mostly located in the intergalactic medium. We observe a burst, FRB 20220610A, in a morphologically complex host galaxy system at redshift $z=1.016 \pm 0.002$. The burst redshift and dispersion are consistent with passage through a substantial column of material from the intergalactic medium. The burst shows evidence for passage through additional turbulent magnetized plasma, potentially associated with the host galaxy. We use the burst energy of $2 \times 10^{42}$ erg, to revise the maximum energy of an FRB., Comment: 52 pages

We present a sample of nine Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) from which we derive magnetic field strengths of the host galaxies represented by normal, $z<0.5$ star-forming galaxies with stellar masses $M_* \approx 10^8 -10^{10.5} M_\odot$. We find no correlation between the FRB rotation measure(RM) and redshift which indicates that the RM values are due mostly to the FRB host contribution. This assertion is further supported by strong correlations (Spearman test probabilities $P_S \simeq 0.05$) found between RM and the estimated host dispersion measure ($DM_{Host}$) and host-normalized galacto-centric offset (Spearman $r_S$ values equal to 0.64 and -0.52). For these nine galaxies, we estimate their magnetic field strengths projected along the sightline $B$ finding a low median value of $0.5 \mu G$. This implies the magnetic fields of our sample of hosts are weaker than those characteristic of the Solar neighborhood ($\approx 6 \mu G$), but relatively consistent with a lower limit on observed range of $2-10 \mu G$ for star-forming, disk galaxies, especially as we consider reversals in the B-field, and that we are only probing $B_{\parallel}$. We compare to RMs from simulated galaxies of the Auriga project -- magneto-hydrodynamic cosmological zoom simulations - and find that the simulations predict the observed values to within the $95\%$ CI. Upcoming FRB surveys will provide hundreds of new FRBs with high-precision localizations, rotation measures, and imaging follow-up to support further investigation on the magnetic fields of a diverse population of $z<1$ galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, Submitted to ApJ

We study the link between galaxies and HI-selected absorption systems at z~3-4 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies (MAGG) survey, an ESO large programme consisting of integral field pectroscopic observations of 28 quasar fields hosting 61 strong absorbers with $\rm N_{\rm HI}\gtrsim 10^{16.5}~\rm cm^{-2}$. We identify 127 Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies (LAEs) around the absorbers, corresponding to a detection rate of 82$\pm$16 per cent. The luminosity function of these LAEs is approximately 5 times higher in normalization than the field population and we detect a significant clustering of galaxies with respect to the gas, confirming that high column density absorbers and LAEs trace each other. Between 30 and 40 per cent of the absorbers are associated with multiple LAEs, which lie preferentially along filaments. Galaxies in groups also exhibit a three times higher covering factor of optically-thick gas compared to isolated systems. No significant correlations are identified between the emission properties of LAEs and the absorption properties of optically-thick gas clouds, except for a weak preference of brighter and multiple galaxies to reside near broad absorbers. Based on the measured impact parameters and the covering factor, we conclude that the near totality of optically-thick gas in the Universe can be found in the outer circumgalactic medium (CGM) of LAEs or in the intergalactic medium (IGM) in proximity to these galaxies. Thus, LAEs act as tracers of larger scale structures within which both galaxies and optically-thick clouds are embedded. The patchy and inhomogeneous nature of the CGM and IGM explains the lack of correlations between absorption and emission properties. Direct observations of low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies at $z\gtrsim4$ provide an indispensable opportunity for detailed inspection of the ionization radiation, gas flow, and metal enrichment in sources similar to those that reionized the Universe. Combining the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), VLT/MUSE, and ALMA, we present detailed observations of a strongly lensed, low-mass ($\approx 10^{7.6}$ ${\rm M}_\odot$) galaxy at $z=3.98$ (also see Vanzella et al. 2022). We identify strong narrow nebular emission, including CIV $\lambda\lambda1548,1550$, HeII $\lambda1640$, OIII] $\lambda\lambda1661,1666$, [NeIII] $\lambda3868$, [OII] $\lambda3727$, and Balmer series of Hydrogen from this galaxy, indicating a metal-poor HII region ($\lesssim 0.12\ {\rm Z}_\odot$) powered by massive stars. Further, we detect a metal-enriched damped Ly$\alpha$ system (DLA) associated with the galaxy with the HI column density of $N_{\rm{HI}}\approx 10^{21.8}$ cm$^{-2}$. The metallicity of the associated DLA may reach the super solar metallicity (${\gtrsim Z}_\odot$). Moreover, thanks to JWST and gravitational lensing, we present the resolved UV slope ($\beta$) map at the spatial resolution of $\approx 100$ pc at $z=4$, with steep UV slopes reaching $\beta \approx -2.5$ around three star-forming clumps. Combining with low-redshift analogs, our observations suggest that low-mass, low-metallicity galaxies, which dominate reionization, could be surrounded by a high covering fraction of the metal-enriched, neutral-gaseous clouds. This implies that the metal enrichment of low-mass galaxies is highly efficient, and further support that in low-mass galaxies, only a small fraction of ionizing radiation can escape through the interstellar or circumgalactic channels with low column-density neutral gas., Comment: 4 figures, 1 table; Accepted for Publication in the ApJL

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Survey has obtained a set of spectroscopic measurements of galaxies to validate the final survey design and target selections. To assist in these tasks, we visually inspect (VI) DESI spectra of approximately 2,500 bright galaxies, 3,500 luminous red galaxies (LRGs), and 10,000 emission line galaxies (ELGs), to obtain robust redshift identifications. We then utilize the VI redshift information to characterize the performance of the DESI operation. Based on the VI catalogs, our results show that the final survey design yields samples of bright galaxies, LRGs, and ELGs with purity greater than $99\%$. Moreover, we demonstrate that the precision of the redshift measurements is approximately 10 km/s for bright galaxies and ELGs and approximately 40 km/s for LRGs. The average redshift accuracy is within 10 km/s for the three types of galaxies. The VI process also helps improve the quality of the DESI data by identifying spurious spectral features introduced by the pipeline. Finally, we show examples of unexpected real astronomical objects, such as Ly$\alpha$ emitters and strong lensing candidates, identified by VI. We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by CaII 3934,3969 and NaI 5891,5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 < log M_*/M_sun < 10.6. The quasar-galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R_perp < 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies' star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densities N(CaII) > 10^12.5 cm^-2 (N(NaI) > 10^12.0 cm^-2) occur with an incidence f_C(CaII) = 0.63^+0.10_-0.11 (f_C(NaI) = 0.57^+0.10_-0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence of f_C or the rest-frame equivalent widths W_r(CaII K) or W_r(NaI 5891) on R_perp or M_*. Instead, W_r(CaII K) is correlated with local SFR at >3sigma significance, suggesting that CaII traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within +/-50 km/s of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Delta v_90) are universally 30-177 km/s larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist at R_perp > 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening and W_r(CaII K) (W_r(NaI 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky Way E(B-V)-W_r relations at >3sigma significance., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. We constrain the Hubble constant H$_0$ using Fast Radio Burst (FRB) observations from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and Murriyang (Parkes) radio telescopes. We use the redshift-dispersion measure (`Macquart') relationship, accounting for the intrinsic luminosity function, cosmological gas distribution, population evolution, host galaxy contributions to the dispersion measure (DM$_{\rm host}$), and observational biases due to burst duration and telescope beamshape. Using an updated sample of 16 ASKAP FRBs detected by the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) Survey and localised to their host galaxies, and 60 unlocalised FRBs from Parkes and ASKAP, our best-fitting value of H$_0$ is calculated to be $73_{-8}^{+12}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. Uncertainties in FRB energetics and DM$_{\rm host}$ produce larger uncertainties in the inferred value of H$_0$ compared to previous FRB-based estimates. Using a prior on H$_0$ covering the 67--74 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ range, we estimate a median DM$_{\rm host} = 186_{-48}^{+59}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, exceeding previous estimates. We confirm that the FRB population evolves with redshift similarly to the star-formation rate. We use a Schechter luminosity function to constrain the maximum FRB energy to be $\log_{10} E_{\rm max}=41.26_{-0.22}^{+0.27}$ erg assuming a characteristic FRB emission bandwidth of 1 GHz at 1.3 GHz, and the cumulative luminosity index to be $\gamma=-0.95_{-0.15}^{+0.18}$. We demonstrate with a sample of 100 mock FRBs that H$_0$ can be measured with an uncertainty of $\pm 2.5$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, demonstrating the potential for clarifying the Hubble tension with an upgraded ASKAP FRB search system. We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of seven compact low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z,in the range 0.3161-0.4276, with various O3Mg2=[OIII]5007/MgII 2796+2803 and Mg2=MgII 2796/MgII 2803 emission-line ratios. We aim to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on the characteristics of MgII emission together with the dependences on other indirect indicators of escaping ionizing radiation. LyC emission with escape fractions fesc(LyC)=3.1-4.6 per cent is detected in four galaxies, whereas only 1sigma upper limits of fesc(LyC) in the remaining three galaxies were derived. A strong narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks separated by Vsep~298-592 km/s was observed in four galaxies with detected LyC emission and very weak Ly-alpha emission is observed in galaxies with LyC non-detections. Our new data confirm the tight anti-correlation between fesc(LyC) and Vsep found for previous low-redshift galaxy samples. Vsep remains the best indirect indicator of LyC leakage among all considered indicators. It is found that escaping LyC emission is detected predominantly in galaxies with Mg2>1.3. A tendency of an increase of fesc(LyC) with increasing of both the O3Mg2 and Mg2 is possibly present. We report a Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array search for redshifted CO(1-0) emission from three HI-absorption-selected galaxies at $z \approx 2$, identified earlier in their CO(3-2) or CO(4-3) emission. We detect CO(1-0) emission from DLA B1228-113 at $z\approx2.1933$ and DLA J0918+1636 at $z\approx2.5848$; these are the first detections of CO(1-0) emission in high-$z$ HI-selected galaxies. We obtain high molecular gas masses, $\rm M_{mol}\approx10^{11}\times(\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.36)\ M_\odot$, for the two objects with CO(1-0) detections, which are a factor of $\approx1.5-2$ lower than earlier estimates. We determine the excitation of the mid$-J$ CO rotational levels relative to the $J=1$ level, r$_{ J1}$, in HI-selected galaxies for the first time, obtaining r$_{\rm 31}=1.00\pm0.20$ and r$_{\rm 41}=1.03\pm0.23$ for DLA J0918+1636, and r$_{\rm 31}=0.86\pm0.21$ for DLA B1228-113. These values are consistent with thermal excitation of the $J=3,4$ levels. The excitation of the $J=3$ level in the HI-selected galaxies is similar to that seen in massive main-sequence and sub-mm galaxies at $z\gtrsim2$, but higher than that in main-sequence galaxies at $z\approx1.5$; the higher excitation of the galaxies at $z\gtrsim2$ is likely to be due to their higher star-formation rate (SFR) surface density. We use Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 imaging to detect the rest-frame near-ultraviolet emission of DLA B1228-113, obtaining an NUV SFR of $4.44\pm0.47$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, significantly lower than that obtained from the total infrared luminosity, indicating significant dust extinction in the $z\approx2.1933$ galaxy., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, and 2 tables. We report a NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) search for redshifted CO emission from the galaxies associated with seven high-metallicity ([M/H] $\geq -1.03$) damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) at $z\approx1.64-2.51$. Our observations yielded one new detection of CO(3-2) emission from a galaxy at $z=2.4604$ using NOEMA, associated with the $z=2.4628$ DLA towards QSO B0201+365. Including previous searches, our search results in detection rates of CO emission of $\approx56^{+38}_{-24}$ % and $\approx11^{+26}_{-9}$ %, respectively, in the fields of DLAs with ${\rm [M/H]}>-0.3$ and ${\rm [M/H]}<-0.3$. Further, the HI-selected galaxies associated with five DLAs with [M/H] $>-0.3$ all have high molecular gas masses, $\gtrsim5\times10^{10}\ {\rm M}_\odot$. This indicates that the highest-metallicity DLAs at $z\approx2$ are associated with the most massive galaxies. The newly-identified $z\approx2.4604$ HI-selected galaxy, DLA0201+365g, has an impact parameter of $\approx7$ kpc to the QSO sightline, and an implied molecular gas mass of $(5.04\pm0.78) \times10^{10}\times(\alpha_{\rm CO}/4.36)\times(r_{31}/0.55)\ {\rm M}_\odot$. Archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 imaging covering the rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission from this galaxy yield non-detections of rest-frame NUV and FUV emission, and a $5\sigma$ upper limit of 2.3 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ on the unobscured star formation rate (SFR). The low NUV-based SFR estimate, despite the very high molecular gas mass, indicates that DLA0201+365g either is a very dusty galaxy, or has a molecular gas depletion time that is around two orders of magnitude larger than that of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. We report on the discovery and localization of fast radio bursts (FRBs) from the MeerTRAP project, a commensal fast radio transient-detection programme at MeerKAT in South Africa. Our hybrid approach combines a coherent search with an average field-of-view of 0.4 $\rm deg^{2}$ with an incoherent search utilizing a field-of-view of $\sim$1.27 $\rm deg^{2}$ (both at 1284~MHz). Here, we present results on the first three FRBs: FRB 20200413A (DM=1990.05 pc cm$^{-3}$), FRB 20200915A (DM=740.65 pc cm$^{-3}$), and FRB 20201123A (DM=433.55 pc cm$^{-3}$). FRB 20200413A was discovered only in the incoherent beam. FRB 20200915A (also discovered only in the incoherent beam) shows speckled emission in the dynamic spectrum which cannot be explained by interstellar scintillation in our Galaxy or plasma lensing, and might be intrinsic to the source. FRB 20201123A shows a faint post-cursor burst about 200 ms after the main burst and warrants further follow-up to confirm whether it is a repeating FRB. FRB 20201123A also exhibits significant temporal broadening consistent with scattering by a turbulent medium. The broadening exceeds that predicted for medium along the sightline through our Galaxy. We associate this scattering with the turbulent medium in the environment of the FRB in the host galaxy. Within the approximately $1'$ localization region of FRB 20201123A, we identify one luminous galaxy ($r \approx 15.67$; J173438.35$-$504550.4) that dominates the posterior probability for a host association. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has embarked on an ambitious five-year survey to explore the nature of dark energy with spectroscopy of 40 million galaxies and quasars. DESI will determine precise redshifts and employ the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation method to measure distances from the nearby universe to z > 3.5, as well as measure the growth of structure and probe potential modifications to general relativity. In this paper we describe the significant instrumentation we developed for the DESI survey. The new instrumentation includes a wide-field, 3.2-deg diameter prime-focus corrector that focuses the light onto 5020 robotic fiber positioners on the 0.812 m diameter, aspheric focal surface. The positioners and their fibers are divided among ten wedge-shaped petals. Each petal is connected to one of ten spectrographs via a contiguous, high-efficiency, nearly 50 m fiber cable bundle. The ten spectrographs each use a pair of dichroics to split the light into three channels that together record the light from 360 - 980 nm with a resolution of 2000 to 5000. We describe the science requirements, technical requirements on the instrumentation, and management of the project. DESI was installed at the 4-m Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, and we also describe the facility upgrades to prepare for DESI and the installation and functional verification process. DESI has achieved all of its performance goals, and the DESI survey began in May 2021. Some performance highlights include RMS positioner accuracy better than 0.1", SNR per \sqrt{\AA} > 0.5 for a z > 2 quasar with flux 0.28e-17 erg/s/cm^2/A at 380 nm in 4000s, and median SNR = 7 of the [OII] doublet at 8e-17 erg/s/cm^2 in a 1000s exposure for emission line galaxies at z = 1.4 - 1.6. The bimodal absorption system imaging campaign (BASIC) aims to characterize the galaxy environments of a sample of 36 HI-selected partial Lyman limit systems (pLLSs) and Lyman limit systems (LLSs) in 23 QSO fields at $z \lesssim 1$. These pLLSs/LLSs provide a unique sample of absorbers with unbiased and well-constrained metallicities, allowing us to explore the origins of metal-rich and low-metallicity circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z<1$. Here we present Keck/KCWI and VLT/MUSE observations of 11 of these QSO fields (19 pLLSs) that we combine with HST/ACS imaging to identify and characterize the absorber-associated galaxies. We find 23 unique absorber-associated galaxies, with an average of one associated galaxy per absorber. For seven absorbers, all with $<10\%$ solar metallicities, we find no associated galaxies with $\log M_\star \gtrsim 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir}$ and $|\Delta v|/v_{esc} \le$ 1.5 with respect to the absorber. We do not find any strong correlations between the metallicities or HI column densities of the gas and most of the galaxy properties, except for the stellar mass of the galaxies: the low-metallicity ([X/H] $\le -1.4$) systems have a probability of $0.39^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$ for having a host galaxy with $\log M_\star \ge 9.0$ within $\rho/R_{vir} \le 1.5$, while the higher metallicity absorbers have a probability of $0.78^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$. This implies metal-enriched pLLSs/LLSs at $z<1$ are typically associated with the CGM of galaxies with $\log M_\star > 9.0$, whereas low-metallicity pLLSs/LLSs are found in more diverse locations, with one population arising in the CGM of galaxies and another more broadly distributed in overdense regions of the universe. Using absorbers not associated with galaxies, we estimate the unweighted geometric mean metallicity of the intergalactic medium to be [X/H] $\lesssim -2.1$ at $z<1$, which is lower than previously estimated., Comment: Key figures: 13 and 18. Post-starburst galaxies are believed to be in a rapid transition between major merger starbursts and quiescent ellipticals. Their optical spectrum is dominated by A-type stars, suggesting a starburst that was quenched recently. While optical observations suggest little ongoing star formation, some have been shown to host significant molecular gas reservoirs. This led to the suggestion that gas depletion is not required to end the starburst, and that star formation is suppressed by other processes. We present NOEMA CO(1-0) observations of 15 post-starburst galaxies with emission lines consistent with Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) photoionization. We collect post-starburst candidates with molecular gas measurements from the literature, with some classified as classical E+A, while others with line ratios consistent with AGN and/or shock ionization. Using far-infrared observations, we show that systems that were reported to host exceptionally-large molecular gas reservoirs host in fact obscured star formation, with some systems showing star formation rates comparable to ULIRGs. Among E+A galaxies with molecular gas measurements, 7 out of 26 (26\%) host obscured starbursts. Using far-infrared observations, post-starburst candidates show similar SFR-$M_{\mathrm{H_2}}$ and Kennicutt-Schmidt relations to those observed in star-forming and starburst galaxies. In particular, there is no need to hypothesize star formation quenching by processes other than the consumption of molecular gas by star formation. The combination of optical, far-infrared, and CO observations indicates that some regions within these galaxies have been recently quenched, while others are still forming stars in highly obscured regions. All this calls into question the traditional interpretation of such galaxies.

The study of impulsive astrophysical radio emission makes it possible to probe the intervening plasma between the emission source and the Earth. In cold electron-ion plasmas, the circular propagating wave modes primarily alter the linear polarization plane that scales with the inverse-square of the emission frequency. In relativistic plasmas, the wave modes are elliptically polarized, and it is possible to convert linearly polarized emission into circular and vice versa. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) enable the study of not only the electron-ion plasma of the intergalactic medium but potentially the extreme magneto-ionic medium in which these intense pulses are produced. Here we report on the polarimetric analysis of a repeat burst from the FRB 20201124A source. The burst displayed a significant frequency-dependent circularly polarized component, unlike other bursts from this source or any other FRB found to date. We model the frequency dependence of the circular polarization using a phenomenological generalized Faraday rotation framework. We find that the observed circular polarization in the burst can be adequately explained by the propagation of an initially linearly polarised burst signal through a relativistic plasma along the line of sight from the progenitor., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review D

While emission-selected galaxy surveys are biased towards the most luminous part of the galaxy population, absorption selection is a potentially unbiased galaxy selection technique with respect to luminosity. However, the physical properties of absorption-selected galaxies are not well characterised. Here we study the excitation conditions in the interstellar medium (ISM) in damped Ly$\alpha$ (DLA) absorption-selected galaxies. We present a study of the CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) in four high-metallicity absorption-selected galaxies with previously reported CO detections at intermediate ($z \sim 0.7$) and high ($z \sim 2$) redshifts. We find further evidence for a wide variety of ISM conditions in these galaxies. Two out of the four galaxies show CO SLEDs consistent with that of the Milky Way inner disk. Interestingly, one of these galaxies is at $z \sim 2$ and has a CO SLED below that of main-sequence galaxies at similar redshifts. The other two galaxies at $z>2$ show more excited ISM conditions, with one of them showing thermal excitation of the mid-$J$ (J$=3, 4$) levels, similar to that seen in two massive main-sequence galaxies at these redshifts. We present Monte Carlo Physarum Machine: a computational model suitable for reconstructing continuous transport networks from sparse 2D and 3D data. MCPM is a probabilistic generalization of Jones's 2010 agent-based model for simulating the growth of Physarum polycephalum slime mold. We compare MCPM to Jones's work on theoretical grounds, and describe a task-specific variant designed for reconstructing the large-scale distribution of gas and dark matter in the Universe known as the Cosmic web. To analyze the new model, we first explore MCPM's self-patterning behavior, showing a wide range of continuous network-like morphologies -- called "polyphorms" -- that the model produces from geometrically intuitive parameters. Applying MCPM to both simulated and observational cosmological datasets, we then evaluate its ability to produce consistent 3D density maps of the Cosmic web. Finally, we examine other possible tasks where MCPM could be useful, along with several examples of fitting to domain-specific data as proofs of concept.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are fascinating events due to their panchromatic nature. We study optical plateaus in GRB afterglows via an extended search into archival data. We comprehensively analyze all published GRBs with known redshifts and optical plateaus observed by many ground-based telescopes (e.g., Subaru Telescope, RATIR) around the world and several space-based observatories such as the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We fit 500 optical light curves (LCs), showing the existence of the plateau in 179 cases. This sample is 75% larger than the previous one (arXiv:2105.10717), and it is the largest compilation so far of optical plateaus. We discover the 3D fundamental plane relation at optical wavelengths using this sample. This correlation is between the rest-frame time at the end of the plateau emission, $T^{*}_{\rm opt}$, its optical luminosity, $L_{\rm opt}$, and the peak in the optical prompt emission, $L_{\rm peak, opt}$, thus resembling the three-dimensional (3D) X-ray fundamental plane relation (arXiv:1604.06840). We correct our sample for redshift evolution and selection effects, discovering that this correlation is indeed intrinsic to GRB physics. We investigate the rest-frame end time distributions in X-rays and optical ($T^{*}_{\rm opt}$, $T^{*}_{\rm X}$), and conclude that the plateau is achromatic only when selection biases are not considered. We also investigate if the 3D optical correlation may be a new discriminant between optical GRB classes and find that there is no significant separation between the classes compared to the Gold sample plane after correcting for evolution., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. We report a Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope HI 21cm mapping study of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in the host galaxy of the fast radio burst (FRB) FRB20180916B at $z \approx 0.03399$. We find that the FRB host has an HI mass of $\rm M_{HI} = (2.74 \pm 0.33) \times 10^9 \ M_\odot$ and a high HI-to-stellar mass ratio, $\approx 1.3$. The FRB host is thus a gas-rich but near-quiescent galaxy, that is likely to have acquired a significant mass of HI in the recent past. The HI distribution is disturbed, with extended HI 21cm emission detected in a north-eastern tail, a counter-tail towards the south, an HI hole between the galaxy centre and the FRB location, and a high HI column density measured close to the FRB position. The FRB host is part of a group with four companions detected in their HI 21cm emission, the nearest of which is only 22~kpc from the FRB location. The gas-richness and disturbed HI distribution indicate that the FRB host has recently undergone a minor merger, which increased its HI mass, disturbed the HI in the galaxy disk, and compressed the HI near the FRB location to increase its surface density. We propose that this merger caused the burst of star-formation in the outskirts of the galaxy that gave rise to the FRB progenitor. The evidence for a minor merger is consistent with scenarios in which the FRB progenitor is a massive star, formed due to the merger event., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We have updated and applied a convolutional neural network (CNN) machine learning model to discover and characterize damped Ly$\alpha$ systems (DLAs) based on Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) mock spectra. We have optimized the training process and constructed a CNN model that yields a DLA classification accuracy above 99$\%$ for spectra which have signal-to-noise (S/N) above 5 per pixel. Classification accuracy is the rate of correct classifications. This accuracy remains above 97$\%$ for lower signal-to-noise (S/N) $\approx1$ spectra. This CNN model provides estimations for redshift and HI column density with standard deviations of 0.002 and 0.17 dex for spectra with S/N above 3 per pixel. Also, this DLA finder is able to identify overlapping DLAs and sub-DLAs. Further, the impact of different DLA catalogs on the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) is investigated. The cosmological fitting parameter result for BAO has less than $0.61\%$ difference compared to analysis of the mock results with perfect knowledge of DLAs. This difference is lower than the statistical error for the first year estimated from the mock spectra: above $1.7\%$. We also compared the performance of CNN and Gaussian Process (GP) model. Our improved CNN model has moderately 14$\%$ higher purity and 7$\%$ higher completeness than an older version of GP code, for S/N $>$ 3. Both codes provide good DLA redshift estimates, but the GP produces a better column density estimate by $24\%$ less standard deviation. We present statistics of HeII Lya transmission spikes and large-scale absorption troughs using archival high-resolution ($R=\lambda /\Delta \lambda \simeq 12,500$-$18,000$) far-UV spectra of eight HeII-transparent quasars obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. The sample covers the redshift range 2.5100cMpc at z>3 to L~30cMpc at z~2.7, signaling a significant progression of HeII reionization at these redshifts. Furthermore, unexpectedly long L~65cMpc troughs detected at z~2.9 suggest that the UV background fluctuates at larger scales than predicted by current models. By comparing the measured incidence of transmission spikes to predictions from forward-modeled mock spectra created from the outputs of a (146cMpc)^3 optically thin Nyx hydrodynamical simulation employing different UV background models, we infer the redshift evolution of the HeII photoionization rate $\Gamma_\mathrm{He\,II}(z)$. The photoionization rate decreases with increasing redshift from $\simeq 4.6\times 10^{-15}\mathrm{\,s^{-1}}$ at z~2.6 to $\simeq 1.2 \times 10^{-15}\mathrm{\,s^{-1}}$ at z~3.2, in agreement with previous inferences from the HeII effective optical depth, and following expected trends of current models of a fluctuating HeII-ionizing background., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ following minor revision (added 2 new figures); 16 pages, 14 figures

The systematic targeting of extended Ly$\alpha$ emission around high-redshift quasars resulted in the discovery of rare and bright Enormous Ly$\alpha$ Nebulae (ELANe) associated with multiple active galactic nuclei (AGN). We here initiate "a multiwavelength study of ELAN environments" (AMUSE$^2$) focusing on the ELAN around the $z\sim3$ quasar SDSS J1040+1020, a.k.a. the Fabulous ELAN. We report on VLT/HAWK-I, APEX/LABOCA, JCMT/SCUBA-2, SMA/850$\mu$m, ALMA/CO(5-4) and 2mm observations and compare them to previously published VLT/MUSE data. The continuum and line detections enable a first estimate of the star-formation rates, dust, stellar and molecular gas masses in four objects associated with the ELAN (three AGNs and one Ly$\alpha$ emitter), confirming that the quasar host is the most star-forming (${\rm SFR}\sim500$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) and massive galaxy ($M_{\rm star}\sim10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) in the system, and thus can be assumed as central. All four embedded objects have similar molecular gas reservoirs ($M_{\rm H_2}\sim10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), resulting in short depletion time scales. This fact together with the estimated total dark-matter halo mass, $M_{\rm DM}=(0.8-2)\times10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, implies that this ELAN will evolve into a giant elliptical galaxy. Consistently, the constraint on the baryonic mass budget for the whole system indicates that the majority of baryons should reside in a massive warm-hot reservoir (up to $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$), needed to complete the baryons count. We have been undertaking a systematic survey at 850 $\mu$m based on a sample of four prototypical $z\sim2-3$ enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebulae (ELANe) as well as their megaparsec-scale (Mpc-scale) environments to study the physical connections between ELANe and their coeval dusty submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). By analysing the SCUBA-2 data with self-consistent Monte Carlo simulations to construct the number counts, here, we report on the overabundance of 850 $\mu$m-selected submillimeter sources around all the four ELANe, by a factor of 3.6$\pm$0.6 (weighted average) compared to the blank fields. This suggests that the excessive number of submillimeter sources are likely to be part of the Mpc-scale environment around the ELANe, corroborating the co-evolution scenario for SMGs and quasars; this is a process which may be more commonly observed in the ELAN fields. If the current form of the underlying count models continues toward the fainter end, our results would suggest an excess of the 850 $\mu$m extragalactic background light by a factor of between 2-10, an indication of significant background light fluctuations on the survey scales. Finally, by assuming that all the excessive submillimeter sources are associated with their corresponding ELAN environments, we estimate the SFR densities of each ELAN field, as well as a weighted average of $\Sigma$SFR=1200$\pm$300 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, consistent with that found in the vicinity of other quasar systems or proto-clusters at similar redshifts; in addition, it is a factor of about 300 greater than the cosmic mean., Comment: 11 pages, 5 pages, A&A in press

We present ALMA observations on and around the radio-quiet quasar UM287 at $z=2.28$. Together with a companion quasar, UM287 is believed to play a major role in powering the surrounding enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebula (ELAN), dubbed the Slug ELAN, that has an end-to-end size of 450 physical kpc. In addition to the quasars, we detect a new dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG), dubbed the Slug-DSFG, in 2 mm continuum with a single emission line consistent with CO(4-3). The Slug-DSFG sits at a projected distance of 100 kpc south-east from UM287, with a systemic velocity difference of $-360\pm30$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to UM287, suggesting it being a possible contributor to the powering of the Slug ELAN. With careful modeling of SED and dynamical analyses it is found that the Slug-DSFG and UM287 appear low in both gas fraction and gas-to-dust ratio, suggesting environmental effects due to the host massive halo. In addition, our Keck long-slit spectra reveal significant Ly$\alpha$ emissions from the Slug-DSFG, as well as a Ly$\alpha$ tail that starts at the location and velocity of the Slug-DSFG and extends towards the south, with a projected length of about 100 kpc. Supported by various analytical estimates we propose that the Ly$\alpha$ tail is a result of the Slug-DSFG experiencing ram pressure stripping. The gas mass stripped is estimated to be about 10$^9$ M$_\odot$, contributing to the dense warm/cool gas reservoir that is believed to help power the exceptional Ly$\alpha$ luminosity., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, ApJ in press

We present optical and near-infrared photometric observations of GRB 191016 with the COATLI, DDOTI and RATIR ground-based telescopes over the first three nights. We present the temporal evolution of the optical afterglow and describe 5 different stages that were not completely characterized in previous works, mainly due to scarcity of data points to accurately fit the different components of the optical emission. After the end of the prompt gamma-ray emission, we observed the afterglow rise slowly in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths and peak at around T+1450s in all filters. This was followed by an early decay, a clear plateau from T+5000s to T+11000s, and then a regular late decay. We also present evidence of the jet break at later times, with a temporal index in good agreement with the temporal slope obtained from X-ray observations. Although many of the features observed in the optical light curves of GRBs are usually well explained by a reverse shock (RS) or forward shock(FS), the shallowness of the optical rise and enhanced peak emission in the GRB191016A afterglow is not well-fitted by only a FS or a RS. We propose a theoretical model which considers both of these components and combines an evolving FS with a later embedded RS and a subsequent late energy injection from the central engine activity. The link between the circum-galactic medium (CGM) and the stellar growth of massive galaxies at high-$z$ depends on the properties of the widespread cold molecular gas. As part of the SUPERCOLD-CGM survey (Survey of Protocluster ELANe Revealing CO/\ci\ in the Ly$\alpha$-Detected CGM), we present the radio-loud QSO Q1228+3128 at $z=2.2218$, which is embedded in an enormous Ly$\alpha$ nebula. ALMA+ACA observations of CO(4-3) reveal both a massive molecular outflow, and a more extended molecular gas reservoir across $\sim$100 kpc in the CGM each containing a mass of M$_{\rm H2}$\,$\sim$\,4$-$5\,$\times$\,10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$. The outflow and molecular CGM are aligned spatially, along the direction of an inner radio jet. After re-analysis of Ly$\alpha$ data of Q1228+3128 from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, we found that the velocity of the extended CO agrees with the redshift derived from the Ly$\alpha$ nebula and the bulk velocity of the massive outflow. We propose a scenario where the radio source in Q1228+3128 is driving the molecular outflow and perhaps also enriching or cooling the CGM. In addition, we found that the extended CO emission is nearly perpendicular to the extended Ly$\alpha$ nebula spatially, indicating that the two gas phases are not well mixed, and possibly even represent different phenomena (e.g., outflow vs. infall). We combine 126 new galaxy-O VI absorber pairs from the CGM$^2$ survey with 123 pairs drawn from the literature to examine the simultaneous dependence of the column density of O VI absorbers ($N_{\rm O VI}$) on galaxy stellar mass, star formation rate, and impact parameter. The combined sample consists of 249 galaxy-O VI absorber pairs covering $z=0$-$0.6$, with host galaxy stellar masses $M^*=10^{7.8}$-$10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ and galaxy-absorber impact parameters $R_\perp=0$-$400$ proper kiloparsecs. In this work, we focus on the variation of $N_{\rm O VI}$ with galaxy mass and impact parameter among the star-forming galaxies in the sample. We find that the average $N_{\rm O VI}$ within one virial radius of a star-forming galaxy is greatest for star-forming galaxies with $M^*=10^{9.2}$-$10^{10}$ $M_\odot$. Star-forming galaxies with $M^*$ between $10^{8}$ and $10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ can explain most O VI systems with column densities greater than 10$^{13.5}$ cm$^{-2}$. 60% of the O VI mass associated with a star-forming galaxy is found within one virial radius and 35% is found between one and two virial radii. In general, we find that some departure from hydrostatic equilibrium in the CGM is necessary to reproduce the observed O VI amount, galaxy mass dependence, and extent. We conducted a deep spectroscopic survey, named SSA22-HIT, in the SSA22 field with the DEep Imaging MultiObject Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck telescope, designed to tomographically map high-z HI gas through analysis of Lya absorption in background galaxies' spectra. In total, 198 galaxies were spectroscopically confirmed at 2.5 < z < 6 with a few low-z exceptions in the 26 x 15 arcmin^2 area, of which 148 were newly determined in this study. Our redshift measurements were merged with previously confirmed redshifts available in the 34 x 27 arcmin^2 area of the SSA22 field. This compiled catalog containing 730 galaxies of various types at z > 2 is useful for various applications, and it is made publicly available. Our SSA22-HIT survey has increased by approximately twice the number of spectroscopic redshifts of sources at z > 3.2 in the observed field. From a comparison with publicly available redshift catalogs, we show that our compiled redshift catalog in the SSA22 field is comparable to those among major extragalactic survey fields in terms of a combination of wide area and high surface number density of objects at z > 2. About 40 % of the spectroscopically confirmed objects in SSA22-HIT show reasonable quality of spectra in the wavelengths shorter than Lya when a sufficient amount of smoothing is adopted. The physical and chemical properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) at $z\gtrsim6$ have been studied successfully through the absorption in the spectra of background Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs). One of the most crucial questions is to investigate the nature and location of the source galaxies that give rise to these early metal absorbers. Theoretical models suggest that momentum-driven outflows from typical star-forming galaxies can eject metals into the CGM and the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z=5-6. Deep, dedicated surveys have searched for Ly$\alpha$ emission associated with strong CIV absorbers at $z\approx 6$, but only a few Ly$\alpha$ emitter candidates have been detected. Interpreting these detections is moreover ambiguous because Ly$\alpha$ is a resonant line, raising the need for complementary techniques for detecting absorbers' host galaxies. Here, using Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), we report a [C II] 158$\mu$m emitter associated with a strong low-ionization absorber, OI, at $z=5.978$. The projected impact parameter between OI and [C II] emitter is 20.0 kpc. The measured [C II] luminosity is $7.0\times 10^7$ solar luminosities. We present a study of metal-enriched halo gas traced by MgII and CIV absorption at z<2 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies survey and the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution survey. Using these large and complete galaxy surveys in quasar fields, we study the dependence of the metal distribution on galaxy properties and overdensities, out to physical projected separations of 750 kpc. We find that the cool, low-ionization gas is significantly affected by the environment across the full redshift range probed, with ~2-3 times more prevalent and stronger MgII absorption in higher overdensity group environments and in regions with greater overall stellar mass and star formation rates. Complementary to these results, we have further investigated the more highly ionized gas as traced by CIV absorption, and found that it is likely to be more extended than the MgII gas, with ~2 times higher covering fraction at a given distance. We find that the strength and covering fraction of CIV absorption show less significant dependence on galaxy properties and environment than the MgII absorption, but more massive and star-forming galaxies nevertheless also show ~2 times higher incidence of CIV absorption. The incidence of MgII and CIV absorption within the virial radius shows a tentative increase with redshift, being higher by a factor of ~1.5 and ~4, respectively, at z>1. It is clear from our results that environmental processes have a significant impact on the distribution of metals around galaxies and need to be fully accounted for when analyzing correlations between gaseous haloes and galaxy properties., Comment: 27 pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the second data release of the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Tomography Observations (CLAMATO) Survey conducted with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck-I telescope. This project used Lyman-alpha forest absorption in the spectra of faint star forming galaxies and quasars at z ~ 2-3 to trace neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. In particular, we use 320 objects over a footprint of ~0.2 deg^2 to reconstruct the absorption field at 2.05 < z < 2.55 at ~2 h^{-1}Mpc resolution. We apply a Wiener filtering technique to the observed data to reconstruct three dimensional maps of the field over a volume of 4.1 x 10^5 comoving cubic Mpc. In addition to the filtered flux maps, for the first time we infer the underlying dark matter field through a forward modeling framework from a joint likelihood of galaxy and Lyman-alpha forest data, finding clear examples of the detailed cosmic web consisting of cosmic voids, sheets, filaments, and nodes. In addition to traditional figures, we present a number of interactive three dimensional models to allow exploration of the data and qualitative comparisons to known galaxy surveys. We find that our inferred over-densities are consistent with those found from galaxy fields. The dispersion measures (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) encode the integrated electron density along the line-of-sight, which is typically dominated by the intergalactic medium (IGM) contribution in the case of extragalactic FRBs. In this paper, we show that incorporating wide-field spectroscopic galaxy survey data in the foreground of localized FRBs can significantly improve constraints on the partition of diffuse cosmic baryons. Using mock DMs and realistic lightcone galaxy catalogs derived from the Millennium simulation, we define spectroscopic surveys that can be carried out with 4m and 8m-class wide field spectroscopic facilities. On these simulated surveys, we carry out Bayesian density reconstructions in order to estimate the foreground matter density field. In comparison with the `true' matter density field, we show that these can help reduce the uncertainties in the foreground structures by $\sim 2-3\times$ compared to cosmic variance. We calculate the Fisher matrix to forecast that $N=30\: (96)$ localized FRBs should be able to constrain the diffuse cosmic baryon fraction to $\sim 10\%\: (\sim 5\%) $, and parameters governing the size and baryon fraction of galaxy circumgalactic halos to within $\sim 20-25\%\: (\sim 8-12\%)$. From the Fisher analysis, we show that the foreground data increases the sensitivity of localized FRBs toward our parameters of interest by $\sim 25\times$.
