- Abstract
This paper aims to examine the Portuguese influence in Tenerife during the Iberian Union period. We will analyse the importance of this community from a quantitative point of view, in comparison to other communities, and from a qualitative point of view, to find out the true extent of this foreign influence upon the Canary Islands. Additionally, it is significant here to consider the kind of activities the Portuguese developed in the Canary Islands, as well as knowing their birth regions, which could help to contextualize the traditionally close links between the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira. Abstract: Questioning the historiographical analysis about the national identity formation during the First Reign, this Doctorship thesis contributes for the study of what meant "being Brazilian" at that time. It shows how this freedom building-up has taken place up to the total Emancipation, in 1822, and how this question has been present on the politica1life in the first days of the independent Brazil up to that April 7th, 1831, when D. Pedro I abdicated the crown. The country should be free, autonomous. This willing was also shared by "Brazilians", "Portugueses" and Africans. Free, freed or slave, everyone fighted for rights in the public life. "Being Brazilian" has become a historical construction, opposite to "being portuguese". And, as such, it was used as a powerful political weapon, generating laws and rules to control and to watch the foreigners: This ruling has produced a very precious demographic material, based on which we have drawn a Portuguese immigrant profile. They were a presence in the working market, since they arrived in groups for such a long time and followed a very important and old immigration politics, aiming a gradually substitution of the slave for the free worker. As a fundamental manpower, the Portuguese-bom man struggled for avaiable positions and jobs, taking the best ones, creating rivalries with the so-ca1led "Brazilians" . and increasing the fights for survival that could be translated as battles for politica1 spaces, frequently disguised by prejudices and racial quarrels. Viaje. Zonas de contacto Abstract For a paper in the context of your stated goals would love to examine comparatively the (Southern African) portuguese shipwreck survivor narratives of this period with the several Portuguese shipwrecks in Brazil at the same time, looking specifically at the way the figure of the shipwrecked woman was positioned in symbolic dominion (or in denial of dominio). What has happened with Leonor is that in subsequent retelling (from Camões onward) she has been returned to her husband’s embrace, thrust deeper into soil (Mickles translation of the Lusiads – he claims she buried herself to the neck in sand), or rendered invisible – the more common response to her story. I am hoping to find some emblematic fermale survivor figure in the Portuguese shipwreck literature concerning Brazil – though I haven’t poored over the Cabral accounts and others. The afirmation about Boxer and Freyre’s assertion that it was the domination of Portugal and Spain by the Moors that prepared the Portuguese for their propensity to intermarry during the exploration era – that the domination by Moors had accustomed the Iberian travellers in general to find the Moorish woman sexually attractive (Boxer’s idea – though he distances himself from it in his Witswatersrand University lecture in 1961, and attributes it to Freyre and Nash). In South Africa I argue that this sorto f thinking was na important stream in apartheid thought, even though Portuguese culture and bloodlines did not secure a dominant place in modern-day South Africa. In the case of Brazil, I am expecting to find perhaps – of the abandined or cast ashore European womem – as the story or stories get remade into popular literature. Keywords: Portuguese. Voyage. - Abstract
This article is part of the project "Entrepreneurship Portuguese emigrant in London, Nice, Monaco and Andorra." It is funded by FCT, with the proposing institution CEPESE / University of Porto. This project is part of a multidisciplinary team and is based on the comparative analysis of the entrepreneurial path of Portuguese immigrants, their integration in socioeconomic, cultural and local politicians and their presence in the media (eg, internet, documentaries, press). The complaint relates to three different territorial situations: the city of London (UK), the principality of Andorra, the region of Alpes-Maritimes (more specifically the city of Nice) and the Principality of Monaco. The aim of this article to study the relationship of Portuguese emigrants in London, with indigenous communities and other immigrants from other cultures in crossing this city. The relationship established in this amalgam of diverse social membership, in which they and future generations, your children, hesitate between assume or reject these diverse influences. This relationship is not always fluid, mainly due to the fear that parents have of their children assume deviant behavior in relation to their culture of origin, causing tensions within the family. The methodology focuses on qualitative analysis of twenty individual interviews, conducted in the city of London between 1 and 10 July 2014. Each interview, lasting 15- 60 minutes was guided by a pre-defined script. With this study we aim to contribute to a better approach to the phenomenon of emigration, analyzing its implications / intercultural strategies in family context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article delves into the Atlantic dynamics during the period of the aggregation of the Portuguese Crown to the Hispanic Monarchy based on economic relations and personal networks of the Portuguese community established in the Canary Islands with Spanish America. To carry out this study, we have analyzed primary insular documentation, mainly notarial, as well as the publications that have investigated the Hispanic horizon in the Atlantic, with the purpose of including our research into an integral and relational history. As a result, we present an account of the relations between the Canary Islands and America that goes beyond the traditional perception of a unidirectional mercantile course to present multifocal and transborder Atlantic ties built by not only Castilians. publishersversion published

The Jesuit province of Paraquaria included missions established within both sedentary and non-sedentary indigenous groups. This study examines the Guenoa Minuanos and their interactions with the Jesuit mission San Francisco de Borja. The Guenoa Minuanos were a non-sedentary group that lived in the Banda Oriental, or what is today Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul. Some bands chose to settle on the missions and particularly San Francisco de Borja, while other bands allied with the Portuguese. This study focuses on the bands that settled on the San Francisco de Borja mission. In the sixteenth century, there were numerous voyages of discovery in the oceans of the world, expanding European understanding and influence. These explorations, and in particular the knowledge they created, have tended to overshadow other ventures into the unknown. Not just the Europeans, but other cultures as well, navigated the seas and accumulated geographical information, putting together their own ideas about the distribution of the lands and seas around the globe. Arab and Asian seafarers plied the oceans in trade and exploration, and created maps and geographical texts. These maps and texts, however, are not as numerous as a scholar might wish. The Asian maps, particularly early ones, are few in number, and these are virtually all Chinese and Korean creations, world maps based on traditional religious concepts of a circular landmass. There are few maps based on actual navigation. But an early sixteenth-century Portuguese document gives a brief description of a Javanese map, which apparently showed much of the world. It also depicted the routes of the navigations of the Chinese and other Pacific peoples. The map itself has been lost, but we read of it in a letter from the Portuguese admiral Afonso de Albuquerque to his king, Dom Manuel, dated 1 April 1512.No século XVI, várias viagens de descobrimento expandiram a influência e o reconhecimento europeus.

- Abstract
Introduction - Bullying can be defined as aggressive, intentional and repeated actions over a period of time. Several studies have examined the prevalence of bullying among students from various countries showing that this is an international problem, involving at least one in ten students. Objectives - Characterize the bullying actions in the school environment, the student role, the feelings associated with these actions and identify the characteristics of the offender. Methods - The sample was composed by 519 students, enrolled in two schools in southern Portugal. Each student was invited to fill out an anonymous questionnaire, describing one situation of bullying, that they have experienced, their role and feelings about this situation. Results - The results revealed a prevalence of 61.7% cases of physical aggression and 29.7% of verbal allocation. 12.7% of students were aggressors, 21.8% were victims and 63.6% were witnesses. 10.6% reported feeling well, 11% showed indifference and 78.4% of students felt badly. It was found that for each year more the student increases 1.5 times the probability to be the aggressor and the boys have 5.2 times more likely to come into the role of aggressor in a situation of bullying. Conclusion - The present study found that all students were involved in one school bullying situation, most of the times as a witness, with physical aggression and felt bad about it. The boys and older students over age were more likely to play the role of aggressor in a bullying situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Those speeches that constructed images about the ?other? and its territories to justify exploration and Lusitanian dominance over the west coast of Africa in the 15th century. To this end, the continuities and discontinuities in the inheritances of the medieval imagination about Africa and Africans will be discussed through the accounts of Gomes Eanes de Zurara and Duarte Pacheco Pereira in their respective works: the Chronica do descobrimento e conquista de Guin? and the Esmeraldo de situ orbis. It will be highlighted those representations that positioned the pre-conceived territorial and cultural references of the Portuguese in perspectives of otherness with the looks directed to the sub-Saharan peoples and territories. Especially, in the region that was known for Guinea during the fourteenth century navigations. Thus, the present work also seeks to expand knowledge about the Portuguese maritime expansion, as well as the relationships of otherness and identity that occurred in the first contacts of that period.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to underscore the prominence of Portuguese commerce in Belém in the middle of the 19th century. Thus, we can notice that Portuguese commerce was very various. They stood out like owners of taverns, stores, storehouses. Especially the ones who are directly linked to the transatlantic commerce of products and slaves that arrived and departure in Pará. It is aimed to highlight that Portuguese commerce practice in Pará was various, fact that qualified several of them as business men for having had evolved with the broad trade. As a result of some remarkable actuations, it was found many entries registered in the Commercial Court of Pernambuco or Rio de Janeiro to fulfill the requirements in the Code of Trade from 1850. Moreover, the entry itself represents a kind of distinctive among the ones who were in the hierarchy of commerce in Belém.

The article aims to explore the development of migratory dynamics in the 20th century up to the present, focusing on the linguistic impact on migrant groups and individuals. It is based on two theoretical models: the classification proposed by Pries, who distinguishes between emigration/immigration, return migration and transnational migration as migratory types or models, which are predominant in different periods according to migration conditions and different conceptions of society; and – intertwined with this classification – the typology of acculturation strategies coined by Berry: assimilation, separation, marginalization and integration. I will analyze the linguistic implications of each of these three migration types with particular attention given to social networks and the linguistic repertoire of migrants, illustrating them with a selection of examples. At the end of my article, I will expand Berry’s typology according to the characteristics of recent migratory movements and the current paradigm for their study in sociolinguistics.

This work proposes a novel analysis of the inquisitorial persecutions suffered by Portuguese converts in the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the mid-seventeenth century and which an extensive bibliography has been calling the Jewish «Great Complicity» in America. Below the inquisitorial repression against the Judaizers in Mexico that characterized the manifestation of this conflict, this work examines the struggle unleashed between the Basque nation and the Portuguese nation in Mexico, at an extremely critical juncture such as the one in the middle of that century.

The paper examines the ways in which Portuguese migrants connect to their country of origin. How do they re-construct or re-invent elements of their (narrated) "culture of origin" in Hamburg and in other parts of Northern Germany? Based on ethnographic material and a quantitative survey, the findings suggest that alongside the decrease in language skills and participation in Portuguese associations, many elements which had shaped migrant constructions of Portuguese culture in diasporic settings, are losing importance while football identification, consumption and leisure activity seemingly remain important or are even increasing. Football provides a privileged space for performances of Portuguese belonging and (popular) culture while at the same time being a platform for intercultural encounters. The latter also holds true for Portuguese gastronomic establishments, which give space to the development of culinary and linguistically syncretism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Portuguese have played a formative role in the history of venezuela since the colonial period. They are also one of the largest and most prominent immigrant groups in the present. This article will examine Portuguese immigration in both historical and ethnographic perspectives to show how their presence in venezuela has been characterized by continuous and seamless integration. In doing so, we will reveal important continuities between the ease of Portuguese adaptation into venezuelan society in both the past and the present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the life and academic experiences around traditional dances at school, discussed inside the study and research group School practices and Physical Education, as well as in scientific events of Education and Physical Education, I question in this research what are the values, notions, and meanings of dances in a quilombola colony, an indigenous village and a Portuguese community; how these traditional values, notions and meanings are linked to their current life practice; how the non-local culture relates to these groups and how they influence the lives of those who are not part of their culture. To this end, I carried out an ethnographic study with remnants of the quilombo of the Colônia do Paiol, in the city of Bias Fortes - MG, Guaraní Indians from the Aldeia de Araponga, in Paraty - RJ, and Portuguese from the parish of Areosa, in Viana do Castelo - Alto Minho, with ages between 12 and 98 years, residents or not of the communities that house their associations. Based on Mauss's "The Gift" (2017), which studies the common principle that regulates exchanges: the obligation to give, receive and repay, I analyzed the field diaries, interviews, photos, videos and theses about the three communities, reaching the following conclusions: 1) the values are consolidated in the relationship of signs that support the senses of gifts that allow assimilation and accommodation of meanings of knowledge according to psychophysical individualities; 2) dance groups are total social facts, individual and collective simultaneously, acting according to obligations of coercive and voluntary reciprocity in an asymmetric system that ensures the perpetuation of ethnic corporality, democratically accepted by the collective; 3) the reciprocal exchange is a common denominator of apparently heterogeneous social activities; at parties, it presents symbols of local reality and reaches everyone in a circularity of knowledge that strengthens the identity of communities; and 4) the gifts experienced transit through different structures of life and can be a source of inspiration for a new paradigm of interpretation of the relationship between identity and knowledge production in the school setting.

The new political conditions generated by the separation of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns -which took place in 1640 and resulted in selective forced deportations and inquisitorial persecution in the native Portuguese population settled in the Spanish colonies- forced both the families seated in different locations and the members of local and regional social networks to build-up strategies to avoid the consequences of such provisions. Through a case analysis, this paper seeks to showcase and analyze some of the main relational trends and reproductive patterns that were developed by a discrete family originally settled in San Salvador de Jujuy, but whose residence and heritage extended itself to the cities of Cordoba and Buenos Aires. We focused our research on the characteristics, endeavors, and consequences derived from family bonds and network construction with the purpose of revealing how a family of suspected new Christian origin could built notability and maintain a social position that reached the independence hero Martín Miguel de Güemes Goyechea.

The 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) has been presented as a valid measure to assess psychological distress levels in population surveys but its dimensional structure was not consensual. Our main objective was to provide a Portuguese version of the K10 exploring the reliability and factor structure of this measure. This cross-sectional study included 694 adults collected from a web-based survey and in training entities. Results showed that 37.9% of the individuals reported significant distress symptoms. A good internal consistency of the K10 scale (α=.91) and strong inter-item correlation (ranges from .350 to .659) were found in our study but the original one-dimensional structure was not confirmed. A two-factor model considering anxiety and depression as two latent, independent but correlated factors shows a good fit with the data even across two data collection methods. The K10 tool was sensitive to sociodemographic variables. Participants aged 40 or over and belonging to the general working class presented higher distress levels. Our data indicates the Portuguese version of K10 as a reliable tool with a factor structure to assess psychological distress.

The development and accessibility of healthcare depend on the direct involvement of the citizens and patients for whom it is intended. However, they do not always have adequate knowledge to take advantage of this care, with palliative care being one of those examples. The low level of knowledge can generate myths and prejudices about this care, reduce equity in access and decrease the quality of care. Only a detailed and comprehensive assessment of the knowledge of the general public can enable educational and political campaigns to address real needs. Aim: To evaluate the knowledge of the Portuguese population regarding the concept, objectives and ways of working in palliative care. Also, to analyze the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on knowledge regarding their knowledge about palliative care. Materials and Methods: Questionnaire distributed in Holón pharmacies that adhere to mainland Portugal and islands, from July to September 2017. Accidental sample of 795 individuals over 18 years old. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. The sampling error of the data presented is 3.55% for a 95% confidence level. The Ethics Committee for Health of Universidade Católica Portuguesa approved this study. Results: 90.4% show a proper conceptualization of the concept of palliative care; 75.1% adequately identifies its objectives; the way of working is recognized by 87.6%. 84.6% would like to be cared for by these teams at the end of their lives and 85.7% for their family members. The words associated with palliative care by more than 50% of the participants were doctors and well-being. Virtually all sociodemographic characteristics, in one way or another, influence the results, with particular emphasis on the age group, education level and economic income. Conclusion: The participants revealed good knowledge about the concept, objectives and way of working in palliative care. Taking into account all the influential factors, despite these results, it is crucial to reinforce the process of disseminating the key concepts of palliative care to Portuguese society, as in some sectors the results obtained point to significant deficits.

The article examines judicial processes that involved, as witnesses, two groups present in the Spanish Empire during the early modern period (16th and 17th centuries). These are individuals usually considered, by the imperial authorities, as subverters of the system: indigenous on the Chilean border and Portuguese new Christians. The analysis of records produced in ecclesiastical and secular forums surprises us with the richness of the material that shows the affinity between both realities. Fondecyt 3170453
