The present phylogeographic pattern of red deer in Eurasia is not only a result of the contraction of their distribution range into glacial refugia and postglacial expansion, but probably also an effect of replacement of some red deer s.l. mtDNA lineages by others during the last 50 000 years. To better recognize this process, we analysed 501 sequences of mtDNA cytochrome b , including 194 ancient and 75 contemporary samples newly obtained for this study. The inclusion of 161 radiocarbon-dated samples enabled us to study the phylogeny in a temporal context and conduct divergence-time estimation and molecular dating. Depending on methodology, our estimate of divergence between Cervus elaphus and Cervus canadensis varied considerably (370 000 or 1.37 million years BP, respectively). The divergence times of genetic lineages and haplogroups corresponded to large environmental changes associated with stadials and interstadials of the Late Pleistocene. Due to the climatic oscillations, the distribution of C. elaphus and C. canadensis fluctuated in north–south and east–west directions. Some haplotypes dated to pre-Last Glacial Maximum periods were not detected afterwards, representing possibly extinct populations. Although cave bear remains have been described since the end of 18th century, recent discoveries and methods provide new knowledge about the typical representative of Pleistocene megafauna, which did not survive the Last Glacial Maximum. Genetic studies supplemented by morphometric analyses showed that this mammal differentiated in the Late Pleistocene into two main forms called Ursus spelaeus and U. ingressus. The latter is regarded more expansive and replaced the native U. spelaeus in some areas of Western Europe. Taking into account the differences between these bears, it is interesting to determine if these forms became extinct at different or similar times. Therefore, we assessed their extinction times, applying seven methods using 205 dated records of cave bear ascribed to these two forms. The average extinction time of U. spelaeus was about 25,600 cal. yr BP (Before Present) and of U. ingressus about 24,800 cal. yr BP. The estimations showed that that U. ingressus could survive up to ca. 1,000 years longer than its relative U. spelaeus. The longer survival of the former could be related to its greater morphological variability and better adaptation to arid continental environments, as well as a stronger tendency to occasional omnivory. Both bears became extinct within the coldest phase of the last glacial period, Greenland Stadial 3, which implies that climate cooling was the main factor of their extinction. The climate deterioration decreased vegetation productivity, and could also have had negative consequences on the prolonged hibernation period when the bears were more susceptible to the activity of humans and predators. Complete mitochondrial genome sequences of European sturgeon and two subspecies of the North American, Atlantic and Gulf sturgeons were determined using MiSeq Illumina technology. All three genomes show typical vertebrate organization. They possess 22 tRNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA (ribosomal RNA) genes and a non-coding control region. The extremely rich palaeontological record of the horse family, also known as equids, has provided many examples of macroevolutionary change over the last ~55 Mya. This family is also one of the most documented at the palaeogenomic level, with hundreds of ancient genomes sequenced. While these data have advanced understanding of the domestication history of horses and donkeys, the palaeogenomic record of other equids remains limited. In this study, we have generated genome-wide data for 25 ancient equid specimens spanning over 44 Ky and spread across Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Mongolia. Our dataset includes the genomes from two extinct species, the European wild ass, Equus hydruntinus, and the sussemione Equus ovodovi. We document, for the first time, the presence of sussemiones in Mongolia and their survival around ~3.9 Kya, a finding that should be considered when discussing the timing of the first arrival of the domestic horse in the region. We also identify strong spatial differentiation within the historical ecological range of Asian wild asses, Equus hemionus, and incomplete reproductive isolation in several groups yet considered as different species. Finally, we find common selection signatures at ANTXR2 gene in European, Asian and African wild asses. This locus, which encodes a receptor for bacterial toxins, shows no selection signal in E. ovodovi, but a 5.4-kb deletion within intron 7. The narrow-headed vole, collared lemming and common vole were the most abundant small mammal species across the Eurasian Late Pleistocene steppe-tundra environment. Previous ancient DNA studies of the collared lemming and common vole have revealed dynamic population histories shaped by climatic fluctuations. To investigate the extent to which species with similar adaptations share common evolutionary histories, we generated a dataset comprised the mitochondrial genomes of 139 ancient and 6 modern narrow-headed voles from several sites across Europe and northwestern Asia covering approximately the last 100 thousand years (kyr). We inferred Bayesian time-aware phylogenies using 11 radiocarbon-dated samples to calibrate the molecular clock. Divergence of the main mtDNA lineages across the three species occurred during marine isotope stages (MIS) 7 and MIS 5, suggesting a common response of species adapted to open habitat during interglacials. We identified several time-structured mtDNA lineages in European narrow-headed vole, suggesting lineage turnover. The timing of some of these turnovers was synchronous across the three species, allowing us to identify the main drivers of the Late Pleistocene dynamics of steppe- and cold-adapted species.

Amelanotic malignant melanoma (AMM) is a subtype of cutaneous melanoma with little or no pigment upon visual inspection. The lack of pigmentation is the reason for late diagnosis of lesions and a poor prognosis. We report a case of a 55-year-old female with an AMM diagnosed by immunophenotyping. Monoclonal antibodies S-100, HMB-45, and antibodies to cytokeratin were used. Our patient underwent a wide local excision (a 2 cm wide margin) 2 years ago. So far there are no signs of a recurrence. In doubtful cases, immunophenotyping with monoclonal antibodies HMB-45 and S-100 is important for confirming the correct diagnosis of AMM.
