Abstract: The paper summarizes the rationale and motives for having implemented and financed the National Forest Inventory in order to clarify a series of questions raised by the criteria taken into account when the sampling grid was design. Although the first cycle of measurements has produced some meaningful data about Romanian forests, some inconsistencies between the public opinion about the forest management and the outcome of the forest inventory have somehow undermined the confidence in the statistic background of the National Forest Inventory. The alternative, which is a simple accounting of the growing stock as estimated through the management plans is out of question, because only a tenth of the forest fund is being described by accurate data, while another tenth of the growing stock is completely outdated. Other important reasons shall be sought in the LULUCF reporting schemes, the requirements to appraise the carbon stock as well the important role played by the inventory grid in developing new evaluation methods based on remote sensing.

54. Retention basin with Golesti SHPP downstream dam for mitigating hydropeaking and producing green electricity

Abstract: Hydropeaking is due to the intermittent operation of peak hydropower plants and leads to various and complex problems downstream. A solution to solve part of them is to provide the development scheme with a retention basin downstream the hydropower plant (HPP). The water used intermittently during the day / week to produce electricity at peak load, which leads to sudden variation of flows into the riverbed will be regulated in this reservoir. Irrespective of the program that the HPP has during the day, the retention basin gathers the water and evacuates it downstream as much as possible constantly during the day or, at least, attenuates the sudden variation, increase or decrease, of levels downstream. Thus, the maximum flows evacuated by the HPP can be dramatically reduced as well as the flow fluctuations and the river levels accordingly. If the flow downstream the retention basin is almost constant during the day and it is released through a small hydropower plant, the positive effect of this reservoir on hydropeaking is combined with the production of green electricity. The subject of this paper is to roughly analyse the possibility to build a retention basin downstream Golesti HPP by means of weir and contour dams, if the case may be, and to release the water constantly or with smooth fluctuations, via one or two turbines, a small hydropower plant, producing green electricity without further harming the riverbed and the ecosystem downstream the weir.

Abstract: Purpose: We developed a transthoracic echo simulator that can measure psychomotor skill in echo to assist in training as well as for certification of competence. The simulator displays cine loops on a computer in response to the user scanning a mannequin with a mock transducer. The skill metric is the deviation angle between the image acquired by the user and the anatomically correct plane for the specified view. We sought to determine whether the simulator-based test could distinguish levels of expertise. Methods: Attendees at an echo course or at the annual meeting of the Swedish Heart Association were invited to take a 15 min test on the simulator. On the test, the user scanned the mannequin and acquired 4 views: parasternal long axis (pLAX) in patient 1, apical 4 chamber (a4c) and aLAX in patient 2, and pLAX in patient 3. Scan time was limited to 15 min. Attendees were asked regarding current work status, position, and experience with echo assessed from duration in years and procedure volume in the past 12 months. Results: Of the 61 participants there were 22 sonographers, 2 nurses, and 37 doctors who were all in practice except 1 doctor who was a resident. The data of nurses was combined with that of sonographers because their procedure volume was nearer to that of sonographers (850 ± 599 tests/yr) than doctors (312 ± 393, p < 0.001). Doctors and non-doctors had similar duration of experience (9 ± 8 vs. 12 ± 11 yrs, p=NS). The test was not completed by 12 participants (18%) but unfamiliarity with the simulator may have contributed because the deviation angle for pLAX dropped between the first and third patients (23 ± 11 to 18 ± 10 degrees, p<0.020). The average deviation angle over the 4 views was slightly lower for sonographers than for doctors (26 ± 11 vs. 30 ± 14 degrees, p=NS). The deviation angle for pLAX (55 ± 37 degrees) was higher than for a4C (17 ± 22 degrees) or either pLAX view (p<0.00001). pLAX was the only view whose deviation angle correlated significantly with experience and only with procedure volume (r=-0.302, p=0.025). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that the skill metric employed, angle of deviation between the plane of an acquired view and the plane of the anatomically correct image for that view, can distinguish the relative experience of sonographers and doctors in practice. Simulation-based testing provides objective and quantitative assessment of the psychomotor skill of image acquisition and may be of value in certification of trainees and in maintenance of certification examination of practicing sonographers and doctors.

Abstract: Introduction: The increase of left auricular volume (LAV) is a robust cardiovascular event predictor. Despite that echochardiography is more often used, cardiac MRI is considered more accurate. Our objetives are to validate "fast" LAV measures by MRI vs the considered gold standard (GS) and to compare Echo and MRI in a wide spectrum of patients. Methods: In a non-selected popullation with MRI study previously realized, we measured LAV by biplane method (BPMR) and by area-length in 4 chamber view (ALMR) and compared them with biplane (BPe) and discs method (MDDe) in 4 chamber view in echo. To validate MRI measurements, we measured LAV in short axis slices (Simpson Method, SM) in a group of patients and considered it the GS. Results: 186 patients were included (mean age 51 ± 17 age; 123 male; 14 in AF) with clinical indication of cardiac MRI (Philips 1,5 T). In 24 patients SM was calculated. 29% of cardiac MRI were considered normal. Mean underlying pathologies were myocardiopathy (27%), Ischemic myocardiopathy (17%), myopericarditis (10%), prior to AF ablation (4%), valvular disease (6%) and miscellaneous (7%). Excellent correlation was obtained between "fast" MRI measurements and SM in MRI (SM vs BPMR interclass correlation coefficient ICC=0.965 and SM vs ALMR, ICC=0.958; P<0.05) with low interobserver variability (ICC=0.983 for SM; ICC=0.949 for BPMR; ICC=0.931 for ALMR). "Fast" measurements by MRI showed stadistical correlation between them (CCI=0.910) (Figure). Correlation between Echo and MRI measures was only moderate. (BPRM vs BPe CCI=0,469 mean difference -30 ml; ALMR vs MDDe ICC=0,456 mean difference -24 mL). Conclusions: ‘fast’ LAV measures by MRI are comparable with the MRI GS and also between them. Echo values seem to underestimate compared to MRI, so its use may not be suitable.

Abstract: Purpose: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent sustained arrhythmia. It is a disease of the elderly and it is common in patients (pts) with structural heart disease. Hypertension (HA), hypertensive heart disease (HHD), diabetes mellitus (DM), coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), and valvular heart disease (VHD) are recognized predisposing factors to AF. Objectives: To echocardiographicly disclose the most common predisposing morbidities to AF in our population sample. Methods: From June 2000 to February 2013, 3755 consecutive pts with AF were studied during echocardiographic check-up. According to transthoracic echo, pts were divided in groups based on dominative underlying heart diseases. Electrocardiographically documented AF was subdivided in two groups: transitory and chronic. Transitory AF fulfilled criteria for paroxysmal or persistent AF. Chronic AF were cases of long-standing persistent or permanent AF. Results: The median age was 72 years, age range between 16 and 96 years. There were 51.4% of females. Chronic AF was observed in 68.3% pts. Distribution of underlying heart diseases is shown in figure. Lone AF was diagnosed in only 25 pts, mostly in younger males (median age 48 years, range 29–59, men 80%). Chronic AF was predominant in groups with advanced cardiac remodeling such as dilatative cardiomyopaty (DCM) and VHD, mostly in elderly. HA and DM were found in 75.4% and 18.8%, respectively. Almost 1/2 of pts with AF had HF and 59.2% had diastolic HF. Conclusion: Up to now, echocardiographic categorization of the predisposing factors to AF was not reported. Echocardiographic evaluation of patients with AF could facilitate in identification and well-timed treatment of predisposing comorbidites. Figure Etiological distribution of AF

Abstract: Pulmonary vascular dysfunction is claimed to be a contributor to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Impaired systemic vascular reactivity is one of the essential factors in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The aim of the investigation was to study whether there is any association between systemic vascular function and pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) in patients who have associated causes for PH development, such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: The brachial artery vasodilator responses were measured by the ultrasound technique in twenty patients with mild to moderate COPD (group I) and twenty age–matched and COPD stage-matched patients who had past history of myocardial infarction (NYHA II) (group II).Conventional echocardiographic variables were measured in the said patients too. Results: Both flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and nitrate-mediated dilatation (NMD) were significantly lower, and PAP was significantly higher in the group II patients compared to the same parameters of group I patients. NMD was inversely correlated with PAP (r=-0.7, p=0.02) in group I patients. There was no interrelation between FMD and PAP in patients from group I. Neither FMD nor NMD were correlated with PAP in group II patients. A significant positive correlation between PAP and left ventricular mass index (r=0.8, p=0.003) was revealed in the said patients as well. Conclusions: Attenuated vasodilator response of brachial artery to nitroglycerine is associated with PAP elevation in COPD patients. PH is closely related to cardiac remodeling in COPD patients in whom CHD developed. These data suggest different "stages" of vascular and cardiac remodeling in patients with COPD alone and in coexistence with CHD. The obtained data can be useful in the selection of treatment as regards these patient categories.

Abstract: Background Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin as an add-on to adjustable insulin in patients with inadequately controlled type 1 diabetes. Methods DEPICT-1 was a double-blind, randomised, parallel-controlled, three-arm, phase 3, multicentre study done at 143 sites in 17 countries. Eligible patients were aged 18–75 years and had inadequately controlled type 1 diabetes (HbA1c between ≥7·7% and ≤11·0% [≥61·0 mmol/mol and ≤97·0 mmol/mol]) and had been prescribed insulin for at least 12 months before enrolment. After an 8 week lead-in period to optimise diabetes management, patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1) using an interactive voice response system to dapagliflozin 5 mg or 10 mg once daily, given orally, or matched placebo. Randomisation was stratified by current use of continuous glucose monitoring, method of insulin administration, and baseline HbA1c. The primary efficacy outcome was the change from baseline in HbA1c after 24 weeks of treatment in the full analysis set, which consisted of all randomly assigned patients who received at least one dose of study drug. An additional 55 patients who were incorrectly and non-randomly allocated to only dapagliflozin treatment groups were included in the safety analysis set. This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02268214; data collection for the present analysis was completed on Jan 4, 2017, and a 28 week extension phase is ongoing. Findings Between Nov 11, 2014, and April 16, 2016, 833 patients were assigned to treatment groups and included in safety analyses (dapagliflozin 5 mg [n=277] vs dapagliflozin 10 mg [n=296] vs placebo [n=260]; 778 of these patients were randomly assigned and included in the full analysis set for efficacy analyses (259 vs 259 vs 260; difference due to randomisation error affecting 55 patients). Mean baseline HbA1c was 8·53% (70 mmol/mol; SD 0·67% [7·3 mmol/mol]). AI is helpful in various medical specialties that use imaging for diagnostic purposes, and gastroenterology is no exception. In this field, AI has several applications, such as detecting and classifying polyps, detecting the malignancy in polyps, diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection, gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, gastric cancer, esophageal neoplasia, and pancreatic and hepatic lesions. The aim of this mini-review is to analyze the currently available studies regarding AI in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology and to discuss its main applications as well as its main limitations.

Abstract: Physical patterns represent potential surface cues for promoting osteogenic differentiation of stem cells and improving osseointegration of orthopedic implants. Understanding the early cell-surface interactions and their effects on late cellular functions is essential for a rational design of such topographies, yet still elusive. In this work, fluidic force microscopy (FluidFM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with optical and electron microscopy are used to quantitatively investigate the interaction of preosteoblasts with 3D-printed patterns after 4 and 24 h of culture. The patterns consist of pillars with the same diameter (200 nm) and interspace (700 nm) but distinct heights (500 and 1000 nm) and osteogenic properties. FluidFM reveals a higher cell adhesion strength after 24 h of culture on the taller pillars (32 ± 7 kPa versus 21.5 ± 12.5 kPa). This is associated with attachment of cells partly on the sidewalls of these pillars, thus requiring larger normal forces for detachment. Furthermore, the higher resistance to shear forces observed for these cells indicates an enhanced anchorage and can be related to the persistence and stability of lamellipodia. The study explains the differential cell adhesion behavior induced by different pillar heights, enabling advancements in the rational design of osteogenic patterns., (© 2022 The Authors. Abstract: Background: Human infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a pandemic characterized by a plethora of diseases, of which those affecting the internal organs and nervous system can have severe, life-threatening consequences. Among the manifestations of the disease at the viral entry site, diseases in oral mucosa adnexa are rarely reported. This case report describes a COVID-19-associated aggravating parotid gland disease., Case Report: The 47-year-old, SARS-CoV-2-positive male patient, already hospitalized and now in need of ventilation, had been referred for intensive care treatment due to increasing respiratory problems. A unilateral swelling of the cheek was noticed, the cause of which was initially a parotid gland infection. Examination ruled out mechanical causes of the parotid gland. During further treatment, the patient developed a parotid abscess, which was drained extra orally., Conclusion: The oral cavity is primarily considered as a reservoir of the pathogen. There is an increasing number of reports detailing inflammation of the major salivary glands associated with SARS-CoV-2 virus. Abstract: Magnesium orotate has been cited in the medical literature for the past three years as a possible adjuvant in some pediatric and adult gastroenterological disorders associated with dysbiosis. Studies also focus on the possibility of adding magnesium orotate in psychiatric disorders' treatment, such as major depression and anxiety. The most relevant element in these studies is the efficiency of magnesium orotate therapy in cases with both gastroenterological and psychiatric symptoms. This article proposes a literature review, focused on the studies published in the last three years, targeting magnesium orotate treatment and probiotic supplementation in patients with both digestive and psychiatric symptoms. Moreover, this review will compare the efficiency of magnesium orotate and probiotics within both the pediatric and adult communities, focusing on the possibility of gut-brain axis modulation and its involvement in the clinical evolution of these patients.

Abstract: Introduction: The treatment of blunt splenic injuries showed major evolutionary changes, from fundamental/ basic splenectomy to nonoperative and endovascular treatment, "catheter surgery". Currently, in Trauma Centers, splenic angioembolization is considered the first-line intervention in trauma. This article presents the Bucharest Emergency Clinical Hospital experience in the use of splenic angioembolization, a therapeutic solution in accordance with contemporary practice and literature. Methods: This retrospective study includes patients with splenic trauma by blunt mechanism, in which diagnostic / therapeutic angiography was performed, hospitalized in the Clinical Emergency Hospital Bucharest between January 2006 and December 2019. The main endpoints of the study were: post-traumatic mortality, the need for surgery (laparoscopic/classic) to resolve splenic bleeding, the number of days of hospitalization, the need for hospitalization for more than 1 day in the intensive care unit, the day when the platelet count began to increase, the evolution of laboratory parameters (hospitalization, preangiography, postangiography/embolization, discharge). A secondary endpoint of the study was the frequency of complications that did not require surgery. Results: During the mentioned period in 64 patients treated nonoperatively, diagnostic angiography was performed (27 cases, group B) or therapeutic angiography (37 cases, group A). 26.56% of cases were 55 years old (55-81 years old), the predominance of males being obvious (62.5%). The mean value of the ISS was 21.7 +- 10.4, and 71.87% of cases presented ISS 16. The mean value of the ISS was 21.7 +- 10.4, and 71.87% of cases presented ISS 16. The degree of splenic injury (American Association for the Surgery of Trauma-Organ Injury Scale) presented the mean value 2.95. The degree of splenic lesion was statistically significantly more severe in group A (p 0.001) and preangiography hemoglobin values were significantly lower compared to hospitalization values (p 0.001) indicating the persistence of hemorrhage. Procedural failures occurred in 4.68% of cases, with zero mortality. Conclusions: Splenic interventional radiology is a safe, effective and rational procedure. 73. A Preliminary Evaluation of the Pro-Chondrogenic Potential of 3D-Bioprinted Poly(ester Urea) Scaffolds.

Abstract: Degeneration of articular cartilage (AC) is a common healthcare issue that can result in significantly impaired function and mobility for affected patients. The avascular nature of the tissue strongly burdens its regenerative capacity contributing to the development of more serious conditions such as osteoarthritis. Recent advances in bioprinting have prompted the development of alternative tissue engineering therapies for the generation of AC. Particular interest has been dedicated to scaffold-based strategies where 3D substrates are used to guide cellular function and tissue ingrowth. Despite its extensive use in bioprinting, the application of polycaprolactone (PCL) in AC is, however, restricted by properties that inhibit pro-chondrogenic cell phenotypes. This study proposes the use of a new bioprintable poly(ester urea) (PEU) material as an alternative to PCL for the generation of an in vitro model of early chondrogenesis. The polymer was successfully printed into 3D constructs displaying adequate substrate stiffness and increased hydrophilicity compared to PCL. Human chondrocytes cultured on the scaffolds exhibited higher cell viability and improved chondrogenic phenotype with upregulation of genes associated with type II collagen and aggrecan synthesis. Bioprinted PEU scaffolds could, therefore, provide a potential platform for the fabrication of bespoke, pro-chondrogenic tissue engineering constructs.

The objective of this study was to validate a velocity-based algorithm for saccade detection in IR eye-tracking raw data during walking (straight ahead and while turning) in people with mTBI and healthy controls., Approach: Eye-tracking via a mobile IR Tobii Pro Glasses 2 eye-tracker (100 Hz) was performed in people with mTBI (n = 10) and healthy controls (n = 10). Participants completed two walking tasks: straight walking (walking back and forth for 1 min over a 10 m distance), and walking and turning (turns course included 45°, 90° and 135° turns). Five trials per subject, for one-hundred total trials, were completed. A previously reported velocity-based saccade detection algorithm was adapted and validated by assessing agreement between algorithm saccade detections and the number of correct saccade detections determined from manual video inspection (ground truth reference)., Main Results: Compared with video inspection, the IR algorithm detected ~97% (n = 4888) and ~95% (n = 3699) of saccades made by people with mTBI and controls, respectively, with excellent agreement to the ground truth (intra-class correlation coefficient 2,1 = .979 to .999)., Significance: This study provides a simple yet highly robust algorithm for the processing of mobile eye-tracker raw data in mTBI and controls. Future studies may consider validating this algorithm with other IR eye-trackers and populations.

Abstract: Progressive esophageal carcinoma can infiltrate the surrounding tissues with subsequent development of a fistula, most commonly between the esophagus and the respiratory tract. The endoscopic placement of covered self-expanding metallic stents (SEMS) is the treatment of choice for malignant esophageal fistulas and should be performed immediately, as a fistula formation represents a potential life-threatening complication. We report the case of a 64-year-old male diagnosed with esophageal carcinoma, who had a 20Fr surgical gastrostomy tube inserted before chemo- and radiotherapy and was referred to our department for complete dysphagia, cough after swallowing and fever. The attempt to insert a SEMS using the classic endoscopic procedure failed. Then, a fully covered stent was inserted, as the 0.035" guide wire was passed through stenosis retrogradely by using an Olympus Exera II GIF-N180 (4.9 mm in diameter endoscope) via surgical gastrostomy, with a good outcome for the patient. The retrograde approach via gastrostomy under endoscopic/fluoroscopic guidance with the placement of a fully covered SEMS proved to be the technique of choice, in a patient with malignant esophageal fistula in whom other methods of treatment were not feasible.

Abstract: Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding is a major problem worldwide, being a rare and life threatening condition, with a mortality rate situated between 2 and 4%. Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding is solvent for 1 - 2% of the entire hospital emergencies, 15% presenting as massive bleeding and up to 5% requiring surgery. Lower gastrointestinal bleeding can be classified depending on their location in the small or large intestine. The small bowel is the rarest site of lower gastrointestinal bleeding, at the same time being the commonest cause of obscure bleeding. 5% of total lower GI bleeding appears in the small bowel. When endoscopic therapy associated with medical treatment are insufficient, endovascular intervention can be lifesaving. Unfortunately in some rare cases of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding with hemo-dynamic instability and the angiography performed being unable to locate the source of bleeding, the last therapeutic resource remains surgery. In the following we exemplify two cases of acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding which were resolved in different ways, followed by a thorough description of the different types of available treatment and finally, in the conclusions, we systematize the most important stages of the management algorithm in acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding., (Celsius.)

Abstract: ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) represents a safe endoscopic procedure and serious complications (perforation, haemorrhage, and acute pancreatitis) are usually uncommon. We present the case of a 38-year-old patient with gallstones in the common biliary duct who developed acute pancreatitis after ERCP. One month later a huge fluid collection with necrotic tissue in the right paracolic gutter was found, the fluid being drained by percutaneous drainage under ultrasonographic guiding. The particularity of the case is the post-ERCP pancreatitis, complicated with walled-off necrosis, resolved without surgical intervention by using percutaneous drainage.

Abstract: The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare primary tumor arising from mesenchymal cells in the areolar tissue subjacent to the mesothelial-lined pleura. From an epidemiological standpoint, solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura account for less than 5% of primary pleural tumors, and commonly affect patients in the sixth and seventh decades. We presented the case of a 38-year-old woman, without any significant pathological history, who presented at the emergency room for unspecific respiratory symptoms. Imagistic investigations showed a giant opacity in the upper half part of the left hemithorax. The patient underwent surgery and en bloc resection of the tumor (30/25 cm) in oncological limits was performed. Definite diagnosis - solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura - was obtained through histological examination and immunohistochemistry. Even if SFTP are benign tumors, a long follow-up period is mandatory as even patients with complete resection are at risk of recurrence several years after surgery.

Abstract: Objective: We evaluated the efficacy of nonsurgical management of patients with blunt hepatic or renal injury using detailed angiographic examinations and transcatheter arterial embolization., Methods: The study comprises 5 patients: 3 patients with blunt hepatic injury and 2 patients with blunt renal injury. All patients had CT evidence of hepatic injury, respectively renal injury. In one case with hepatic injury, emergency laparotomy was performed before angiography because of unstable circulatory status. DSA-angiography identified the site of bleeding in all patients, followed by selective embolization with particles of TachoComb. Nonsurgical treatment of hepatic or renal injury with transcatheter arterial embolization was successful in all patients., Conclusions: Our success rate for nonsurgical management of patients with blunt injury to solid abdominal organs should more extensive evaluation and use of angiography for solid abdominal organs injury and the subsequent management of solid abdominal organs injury without surgery.

Abstract: In the last decade of the past century, as laparoscopy was introduced in our clinic in 1993, minimal access therapy (MAT--endoscopy, angiography, interventional imagery) had a positive and constant evolution. Our paper retrospectively evaluates the interventions performed between 2003-2005 (group A) compared to those performed between 1993-1995 (group B). We observed a 17.08% (7056 vs 6026 interventions/year) raise in the total number of interventions in group A, with a significant 66% decrease (195 vs. 588 interventions/year) of interventions for gastro-duodenal ulcer and a 18% decrease (1211 vs 1490 interventions/year) of appendectomies, but a 63% increase (1560 vs. 955 interventions/year) of cholecystectomies, 53% increase (1186 vs. 773 interventions/year) of interventions for parietal defects and a 62% (626 vs. 325 interventions/year) increase of oncological interventions. The most frequent interventions were, in the order of frequencies: cholecystectomies (79.8% laparoscopically), appendectomies, interventions for hernia and eventrations, oncological operations and trauma surgery. The incidence of laparoscopic interventions was greater in group A, counting for 19% of the total number of interventions. In group A were performed 2334 endoscopies, 149 diagnostic and therapeutic angiographies. Postoperative mortality dropped with 29.64% and hospital stay dropped to 4.7 days. We believe that the incidence of MAT should rise, by performing more laparoscopic interventions and this change should lead to a revision of the surgical residents training program.

Abstract: Patients with liver metastasis after colo-rectal cancers are, from the point of une of their disease evolution in the final stadium (the IV th. stadium). Hence, we consider the attempt for liver metastasis treatment, as being desperate experiments to extend the patient's life, taking high risks and having chances of immediate failure. Since 1995 me've started a study about patients operated for colo-rectal cancers that will stand transarterial chemoembolization of their hepatic metastasis, 2-4 weeks before the surgical intervention for hepatectomy. We expose 17 cases to which we performed such a combined therapy, between 1995-1997. We had to postoperative death after major hepatectomies. The other patients are survived by our clinics.

Abstract: Buspirone was studied to determine whether the detailed profile of male sexual behavior observed following treatment with the prototypical 5-HT1A ligand, 8-OH-DPAT, can be generalized to other 5-HT1A agonist drugs. Systemic and intrathecal (IT) routes of administration were compared. Like DPAT, significant reduction in intromission frequency followed IT infusion of buspirone (80-160 micrograms) as did intraperitoneal (IP) injection (1-4 mg/kg). IT doses of 80-160 micrograms and all IP doses significantly reduced ejaculation latency. Intercopulatory interval significantly decreased following IP buspirone but not after IT infusion although there were trends in that direction. All IP doses and 80 micrograms IT significantly shortened the postejaculatory interval. Buspirone inhibited erection and/or ejaculation in the ex copula reflex test. A decrease in percentage of rats displaying erections and ejaculation occurred following either route of administration. Ejaculation was significantly inhibited at the low IT dose of 40 micrograms. We conclude that buspirone affects sexual behavior very much like DPAT or other 5-HT1A drugs, to the extent known. Sexual effects of buspirone were generally similar regardless of route of administration, but the effective doses were clearly lower with IT treatment.

Abstract: Anatomoclinical studies have been carried out on tissue samples obtained from patients with various chronic general diseases including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, kidney diseases, liver diseases, acute and chronic leukemias, that had developed before the time when biologic therapy of the dental pulp had been recommended. In the presence of lesions of various severities of the dental pulp direct application of various biological techniques may trigger violent reactions, just as if the biological substances would represent deleterious factors. Vascular changes, followed by reactional responses in various stages of trophic changes, or dysplasia in the dental pulp, as demonstrated by microscopical studies show a certain degree of deterioration of the dental pulp which are counterindicative for biological therapy. When degenerative lesions of the pulpal connective structures, and vascular-nervous complex have occurred, or when leukemic invading processes have been identified biological therapy is completely counterindicated.
