Dedicating a PTP Interface to spaces of refuge, migration and border enforcement is a very timely decision. The six pieces collected here set out a truly global picture of the nexus of human mobility, politics of citizenship and planning amid turbulent processes of capitalist urbanisation – or, to put it with Neil Brenner and Christian Schmid, ‘planetary’ urbanisation. I particularly appreciate the way the contributors were able to open up the ‘immigration and refugee crisis’. For one, the authors indirectly expose the pathetic cry of Western politicians and media for the tiny fraction of the world refugee population their wealthy countries have to deal with. More importantly, the six pieces also provide a clear picture of the real ‘crises’ at stake: crises of housing, urban development, dispossession and extraction, imperialist war – the latest, and most hideous, crisis of capitalism-as-urbanisation (cf. Rossi, 2017), in short.

This volume presents a selection of the contributions to the Medical Anthropology at Home (MAAH) conference, Assemblages, transformations, and the politics of care, that took place in Bertinoro, Italy, 2014. The authors investigate the moral, material and social assemblages, the mechanisms of transformations, the relationality and the shifting negotiations that define contexts and politics of care. Their shared aim is to problematize both curing and caring as embodied cultural processes, investigating how forms of biosociality, control and subjectification are configured in socially situated and culturally specific terms. Together, they show how care is both extremely fragile as an analytical concept as well as exceptionally productive in questioning the very processes involved in our being human.

This essay will demonstrate the nexus between philosophical dialogue and political action by analyzing the work of Leonard Nelson and his disciples Gustav Heckman and Minna Specht. The central question is: “In which sense can a dialogical education be considered as a political action?”In the 1920s and 1930s, Nelson promoted Socratic dialogue amongst his students as a practice of freedom in opposition to the rising Nazi power. Nelson understood that to educate the new generation through a very participative model of philosophical inquiry that privileged critical thinking and autonomy was the best form of resistance. Minna Specht’s idea of education for confidence gave to this dialogical practice a very innovative dimension, which led her to be engaged with UNESCO’s educational programs in post-war Germany. In this way, the Socratic dialogue faced history.

Leseprobe ----- Zusammenfassung Der Aufsatz thematisiert den beruflichen Wiedereinstieg von Frauen und Mannern nach einer familienbedingten Erwerbsunterbrechung. Vor dem Hintergrund der Finanzkrise von 2008 haben das BMFSFJ und die Bundesagentur fur Arbeit veranlasst, dass Wiedereinstiegsprozesse gezielt von externen Beratungseinrichtungen begleitet werden. Auf Basis von Diskursanalysen, Interviews mit den Wiedereinsteigenden und Teilnehmender Beobachtung von Beratungsgesprachen soll nachvollziehbar gemacht werden, wie Wiedereinstiegsprozesse politisch gelenkt werden und welche Anforderungen sie dabei an die Wiedereinsteigenden stellen. Dabei wird vor allem ersichtlich, dass Carearbeit eine Arbeit bleibt, die auch heute noch unentlohnt neben Erwerbsarbeit geleistet werden soll und innerhalb von Geschlechtern umverteilt wird. In the context of the financial crisis in 2008, the BMFSFJ (German ministry of family) and the German employment agency have induced that the process of a re-entry will be selectively accompanied by extern coaching. Based on discourse analysis, interviews and participatory observation of and with these coaching institutes as well as the concerned group of people, it shall be comprehensible how these processes of re-entry are being shaped by politics and certain demands on the re-entering employees. Thus it appears that care work continues to be a certain kind of work which still has to be done uncompensated and is often redistributed in-between gender. Mounting ecological health concerns—for example climate change, pollution, and loss of biodiversity—occasion the need for innovative methods and interdisciplinary knowledge politics. Through empirical research and artistic mediations I demonstrate that practices of care are vital for reimagining ecological health. I contend that care, when materialised and performed through artworks, can engage with the complex question of how to bring about change. Within this exegesis, I adopt a case study approach to investigate three different artists’ practices, including Natalie Jeremijenko’s, Britta Riley’s and my own. Jeremijenko’s The Environmental Health Clinic stages public art experiments that reframe environmental concerns through a clinical health lens. Riley’s Windowfarms is an indoor garden art project that connects online communities who share sustainable designs. In the third case study, Black-Noise and Carbon Valley, I discuss artwork developed in response to the ecological health impacts of open cut coal mining in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.* From an analysis of the three case studies I make a distinctive contribution by developing an ethos of “careful prospecting”. Careful prospecting, I argue, can be thought of as a means of learning how to care: it is a cosmopolitical practice that is about carefully tending to, tuning into, or becoming curious about ways in which healthy ecologies are produced. I offer careful prospecting as both a methodological and theoretical device for understanding and embodying practices of care in relation to ecological health concerns. Three modalities of careful prospecting were identified: experimenting, curating and listening. Each of these modalities, contributes to a sense of curiosity and obligation. Careful prospecting is about learning to be affected and mobilsing art as a means of engaging with ecological health crises. * The artwork is presented alongside this exegesis in the form of documentation of an installation, Black-Noise, and a video artwork, Carbon Valley.
