Data presented in this study that are not available from BCO-DMO are provided in Tables S1, S2 in the SM, Shallow-water coral reefs hold large quantities of acrylate and its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), but production and removal processes for these compounds are poorly characterized. Here we determined the concentrations and cycling of acrylate and DMSP in a transect from a coral reef ecosystem to the open ocean, 2 km beyond the reef in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, during April 2018. Concentrations of dissolved acrylate and DMSP were low throughout the reef-ocean transect, ranging from 0.8–3.9 nM and 0.2–3.0 nM, respectively, with no difference observed between the coral reef and open ocean when comparing mean concentrations (± std dev) of dissolved acrylate (1.7 ± 0.7 vs 2.3 ± 0.8 nM) or DMSP (0.9 ± 0.7 vs 1.3 ± 0.6 nM). In the coral reef, dissolved acrylate was rapidly taken up by the heterotrophic community with a fast turnover time averaging ~ 6 h, six times faster than in the open ocean, and nearly as fast as the average turnover time of dissolved DMSP (~ 3 h). A clear diel trend was observed for the heterotrophic consumption of dissolved acrylate and DMSP in the coral reef, with higher uptake rate constants during daylight hours, synchronized with the larger daytime release of acrylate and DMSP from the coral compared to the nighttime release of these compounds. We also measured photochemical production rates of acrylate in Mo’orean waters, but rates were one to two orders of magnitude slower compared to its rates of biological consumption. Coral and macroalgae were the main sources of dissolved acrylate and DMSP to the reef ecosystem. Our results indicate there is rapid turnover of acrylate and DMSP in the coral reef with a tight coupling between production and removal pathways that maintain dissolved concentrations of these two compounds at very low levels. The decline of coral reefs has fueled interest in determining whether mesophotic reefs can shield against disturbances and help replenish deteriorated shallower reefs. In this study, we characterized spatial (horizontal and vertical) and seasonal patterns of diversity in coral recruits from Dabaisha and Guiwan reefs at Ludao, Taiwan. Concrete blocks supporting terra‐cotta tiles were placed at shallow (15m) and mesophotic (40m) depths, during 2016–2018. Half of the tiles were retrieved and replaced biannually over three 6‐month surveys (short‐term); the remainder retrieved at the end of the 18‐month (long‐term) survey. 451 recruits were located using fluorescent censusing and identified by DNA barcoding. Barcoding the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene resulted in 17 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs). To obtain taxonomic resolution to the generic level, Pocillopora were phylotyped using the mitochondrial open reading frame (ORF), resolving eight MOTUs. Acropora, Isopora, and Montipora recruits were identified by the nuclear PaxC intron, yielding ten MOTUs. Overall, 35 MOTUs were generated and were comprised primarily of Pocillopora and, in fewer numbers, Acropora, Isopora, Pavona, Montipora, Stylophora, among others. 40% of MOTUs recruited solely within mesophotic reefs while 20% were shared by both depth zones. MOTUs recruiting across a broad depth distribution appear consistent with the hypothesis of mesophotic reefs acting as a refuge for shallow‐water coral reefs. In contrast, Acropora and Isopora MOTUs were structured across depth zones representing an exception to this hypothesis. Coral bleaching in Hawai‘i was first reported in 1996 and subsequently occurred in 2014 and 2015. These largely summer events did not persist past November. In autumn 2019, Hawai‘i experienced persistent warm water until December, resulting in bleaching of many pocilloporid coral colonies, particularly Pocillopora meandrina. We followed the fates of 357 adult P. meandrina and 377 juvenile Pocillopora spp. off Waikīkī on the south shore of O‘ahu. Water temperatures at 5-18 m depth at this site consistently remained above a bleaching threshold of 28°C from September until mid-December. For adult colonies, 96% bleached at least partially, 4% bleached fully, and 11% died by March. Among juvenile colonies, 21% bleached, of which 47% died by March 2020. While mortality was low compared to previous bleaching events in Hawai‘i, such protracted bleaching late into the autumn increases the annual period of temperature stress, which may not bode well for the future of Hawaiian and other high-latitude coral reefs.

Coral reefs across the globe are facing threats from a variety of anthropogenic disturbances. Consequently, the proportional representation of live scleractinian corals in the benthic community has declined substantially in many regions. In contrast, parts of the reef ecosystem around Mo’orea (French Polynesia) have displayed remarkable rebound potential. Nevertheless, detailed studies of when, where, and to what extent reefs have been disturbed and subsequently recovered in the different reef habitats are lacking. Using long-term monitoring data (2004-2018), we reveal that the spatiotemporal dynamics of benthic communities differ markedly between the contiguous inner (fringing and barrier) and outer (fore) reefs. Coral communities on inner reefs vary spatially but were remarkably stable over 15 yr, exhibiting consistent levels of coral and algal cover, with no evidence for disturbance-driven regimes or community transitions. In contrast, the outer reefs showed marked declines in coral cover following consecutive acute disturbances, but coral recovered rapidly thereafter. Nevertheless, community composition changed significantly, with Pocillopora replacing Acropora as the dominant genus at several sites, indicating a more subtle but potentially critical transition into an alternative state defined by the prevalence of a single, fast-growing genus. Inner reef stability and outer reef recovery provide evidence that the effects of environmental disturbances and chronic anthropogenic stressors can manifest in fundamentally different ways, depending on prevailing conditions. Our results suggest important ecological and physical links between inner and outer reef systems that influence the observed dynamics, emphasizing that reef ecosystem management and conservation strategies need to consider all habitats.

Reef-building corals are found across > 30° of latitude from tropical to temperate regions, where they occupy habitats greatly differing in seawater temperature and light regimes. It remains largely unknown, however, how the demography of corals differs across this gradient of environmental conditions. Variation in coral growth is especially important to coral populations, because aspects of coral demography are dependent on colony size, with both fecundity and survivorship increasing with larger colonies. Here we tested for latitudinal variation in annual growth rate and survival of juvenile corals, using 11 study locations extending from 17° S to 33° N in the West and South Pacific. Regression analyses revealed a significant decline in annual growth rates with increasing latitude, whereas no significant latitudinal pattern was detected in annual survival. Seawater temperature showed a significant and positive association with annual growth rates. Growth rates varied among the four common genera, allowing them to be ranked Acropora > Pocillopora > Porites > Dipsastraea. Acropora and Pocillopora showed more variation in growth rates across latitudes than Porites and Dipsastraea. Although the present data have limitations with regard to difference in depths, survey periods, and replication among locations, they provide evidence that a higher capacity for growth of individual colonies may facilitate population growth, and hence population recovery following disturbances, at lower latitudes. These trends are likely to be best developed in Acropora and Pocillopora, which have high rates of colony growth.

Mechanisms of change in coral colonies are necessary components to accurately predict trajectories of coral reef health. Yet, little in-field data has been quantified regarding the demographic rates of change in colonies and the factors that influence them. In this study, we use a large-area imaging approach to estimate baseline demographic rates of the coral genus Pocillopora and test for the influence of colony-specific predictors on growth, shrinkage (i.e. colony survivorship with loss of live tissue), and mortality (i.e. whole colony loss). We found that a colony’s fate was linked to its initial size, with larger colonies experiencing far lower mortality rates but higher shrinkage rates than smaller colonies. In addition, historical effects also significantly affected colony fate, as colonies with recent history of shrinkage experienced further shrinkage and mortality the following year. Finally, we found that significant variability in growth and mortality rates were linked to in inter-island site differences, which we suspect is driven by differences in heterotrophic feeding rates.

International audience; Correctly delimiting species and populations is a prerequisite for studies of connectivity, adaptation and conservation. Genomic data are particularly useful to test for species differentiation for organisms with few informative morphological characters or low discrimination of cytoplasmic markers, as in Scleractinians. Here we applied Restriction site Associated DNA sequencing (RADsequencing) to the study of species differentiation and genetic structure in populations of Pocillopora spp. from Oman and French Polynesia, with the objectives to test species hypotheses, and to study the genetic structure among sampling sites within species. We focused here on coral colonies morphologically similar to P. acuta (damicornis type β). We tested the impact of different filtering strategies on the stability of the results. The main genetic differentiation was observed between samples from Oman and French Polynesia. These samples corresponded to different previously defined primary species hypotheses (PSH), i.e. PSHs 12 and 13 in Oman, and PSH 5 in French Polynesia. In Oman, we did not observe any clear differentiation between the two putative species PSH 12 and 13, nor between sampling sites. In French Polynesia, where a single species hypothesis was studied, there was no differentiation between sites. Our analyses allowed the identification of clonal lineages in Oman and French Polynesia. The impact of clonality on genetic diversity is discussed in light of individual-based simulations.

The role of diazotrophs in coral physiology and reef biogeochemistry remains poorly understood, in part because N2 fixation rates and diazotrophic community composition have only been jointly analyzed in the tissue of one tropical coral species. We performed field-based 15N2 tracer incubations during nutrient-replete conditions to measure diazotroph-derived nitrogen (DDN) assimilation into three species of scleractinian coral (Pocillopora acuta, Goniopora columna, Platygyra sinensis). Using multi-marker metabarcoding (16S rRNA, nifH, 18S rRNA), we analyzed DNA- and RNA-based communities in coral tissue and skeleton. Despite low N2 fixation rates, DDN assimilation supplied up to 6% of the holobiont’s N demand. Active coral-associated diazotrophs were chiefly Cluster I (aerobes or facultative anaerobes), suggesting that oxygen may control coral-associated diazotrophy. Highest N2 fixation rates were observed in the endolithic community (0.20 µg N cm−2 per day). While the diazotrophic community was similar between the tissue and skeleton, RNA:DNA ratios indicate potential differences in relative diazotrophic activity between these compartments. In Pocillopora, DDN was found in endolithic, host, and symbiont compartments, while diazotrophic nifH sequences were only observed in the endolithic layer, suggesting a possible DDN exchange between the endolithic community and the overlying coral tissue. Our findings demonstrate that coral-associated diazotrophy is significant, even in nutrient-rich waters, and suggest that endolithic microbes are major contributors to coral nitrogen cycling on reefs.

To evaluate potential coral adaptive mechanisms, we investigated physiological traits (biomass, lipid, protein, chlorophyll, and isotopic proxies for trophic strategy) in eight Hawaiian corals species along an environmental gradient of significant wave height, sea surface temperature, and seawater chlorophyll a concentration around the island of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. We used the amount of physiological variation expressed in corals, and the proportion of this variation that could be explained by environmental variables, to construct hypotheses about the relative capacity for each species to adapt or acclimatize to differing conditions. Genus-level analyses indicated that Montipora and Pocillopora phenotypes are influenced more strongly by the environment than Porites corals. Species-level analyses revealed that Montipora capitata and Pocillopora acuta have the widest physiological niche boundaries, whereas Porites evermanni and Pocillopora meandrina are more physiologically restricted. Correlations between individual traits and the environmental gradient provided insight into potential adaptive mechanisms employed by each species that allow them to persist in reefs such as those within Kāne’ohe Bay, where water flow is lowest, and temperature, acidity, and nutrient concentrations are highest relative to other reefs around O‘ahu. Potential adaptive mechanisms included (a) increased surface-area-to-volume ratios to facilitate higher material flux across the diffusive boundary layer and/or to maximize light harvesting (M. capitata and P. acuta), (b) strategic investment of metabolic energy toward energy reserves (Montipora and Pocillopora), (c) changes in protein management likely via differential expression and function (Porites), and d) increased chlorophyll concentration per Symbiodiniaceae cell to maximize photosynthesis (Porites compressa). Comparison of our results with established patterns in the relative abundance of these species around O‘ahu suggests that species with wide physiological niche boundaries like M. capitata and M. flabellata might be expected to do better under predicted future ocean conditions and outcompete species such as P. evermanni and P. meandrina, making them potential candidates for coral conservation efforts.

Corals live with complex assemblages of microbes including bacteria, the dinoflagellate Symbiodiniaceae, fungi and viruses in a coral holobiont. These coral-associated microorganisms play an important role in their host fitness and survival. Here, we investigated the structure and diversity of algal and bacterial communities associated with five Indo-Pacific coral species, using full-length 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer sequences. While the dinoflagellate communities associated with Poriteslutea were dominated with Symbiodiniaceae genus Cladocopium, the other four coral hosts were associated mainly with members of the Durusdinium genus, suggesting that host species was one of the underlying factors influencing the structure and composition of dinoflagellate communities associated with corals in the Gulf of Thailand. Alphaproteobacteria dominated the microbiomes of Pocillopora spp. while Pavonafrondifera and P. lutea were associated primarily with Gammaproteobacteria. Finally, we demonstrated a superior performance of full-length 16S rRNA sequences in achieving species-resolution taxonomic classification of coral-associated microbiota.

Global- and local-scale anthropogenic stressors have been the main drivers of coral reef decline, causing shifts in coral reef community composition and ecosystem functioning. Excess nutrient enrichment can make corals more vulnerable to ocean warming by suppressing calcification and reducing photosynthetic performance. However, in some environments, corals can exhibit higher growth rates and thermal performance in response to nutrient enrichment. In this study, we measured how chronic nutrient enrichment at low concentrations affected coral physiology, including endosymbiont and coral host response variables, and holobiont metabolic responses of Pocillopora spp. colonies in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. We experimentally enriched corals with dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate for 15 months on an oligotrophic fore reef in Mo'orea. We first characterized symbiont and coral physiological traits due to enrichment and then used thermal performance curves to quantify the relationship between metabolic rates and temperature for experimentally enriched and control coral colonies. We found that endosymbiont densities and total tissue biomass were 54% and 22% higher in nutrient-enriched corals, respectively, relative to controls. Algal endosymbiont nitrogen content cell−1 was 44% lower in enriched corals relative to the control colonies. In addition, thermal performance metrics indicated that the maximal rate of performance for gross photosynthesis was 29% higher and the rate of oxygen evolution at a reference temperature (26.8 °C) for gross photosynthesis was 33% higher in enriched colonies compared to the control colonies. These differences were not attributed to symbiont community composition between corals in different treatments, as C42, a symbiont type in the Cladocopium genus, was the dominant endosymbiont type found in all corals. Together, our results show that in an oligotrophic fore reef environment, nutrient enrichment can cause changes in coral endosymbiont physiology that increase the performance of the coral holobiont.

Cryptic species that are morphologically similar co-occur because either the rate of competitive exclusion is very slow, or because they are not, in fact, ecologically similar. The processes that maintain cryptic local diversity may, therefore, be particularly subtle and difficult to identify. Here, we uncover differences among several cryptic species in their relative abundance across a depth gradient within a dominant and ecologically important genus of hard coral, Pocillopora. From extensive sampling unbiased toward morphological characters, at multiple depths on the fore reef around the island of Mo’orea, French Polynesia, we genetically identified 673 colonies in the Pocillopora species complex. We identified 14 mitochondrial Open Reading Frame haplotypes (mtORFs, a well-studied and informative species marker used for pocilloporids), which included at least six nominal species, and uncovered differences among haplotypes in their relative abundance at 5, 10, and 20 m at four sites around the island. Differences in relative haplotype abundance across depths were greater than differences among sites separated by several kilometers. The four most abundant species are often visibly indistinguishable at the gross colony level, yet they exhibited stark differences in their associations with light irradiance and daily water temperature variance. The pattern of community composition was associated with frequent cooling in deeper versus shallower water more than warmer temperatures in shallow water. Our results indicate that these cryptic species are not all ecologically similar. The differential abundance of Pocillopora cryptic species across depth should promote their coexistence at the reef scale, as well as promote resilience through response diversity.

Coral reef ecosystems have a vital role in waters so that damage to coral reef ecosystems can reduce ecological and socio-economic functions that can impact environmental imbalances, such as reef fish and benthic communities. This study aims to determine the effect of transplant media on the growth rate of the genus Pocillopora coral and see whether it has a significant effect on the rate of coral growth in TWAL Pulau Weh, Aceh Province. The method used is a purposive sampling method in determining stations, analysis using the ImageJ 1.52 application. The results showed that the effect of transplant media on the growth rate of Pocillopora corals were significant differences between structures given an electric current and those not given an electric current with a 95% confidence interval. The average growth value of Pocillopora corals given an electric current is 25.06 mm/month. BackgroundMicrobiome manipulation could enhance heat tolerance and help corals survive the pressures of ocean warming. We conducted coral microbiome transplantation (CMT) experiments using the reef-building corals,PocilloporaandPorites, and investigated whether this technique can benefit coral heat resistance while modifying the bacterial microbiome. Initially, heat-tolerant donors were identified in the wild. We then used fresh homogenates made from coral donor tissues to inoculate conspecific, heat-susceptible recipients and documented their bleaching responses and microbiomes by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding.ResultsRecipients of both coral species bleached at lower rates compared to the control group when exposed to short-term heat stress (34 °C). One hundred twelve (Pocilloporasp.) and sixteen (Poritessp.) donor-specific bacterial species were identified in the microbiomes of recipients indicating transmission of bacteria. The amplicon sequence variants of the majority of these transmitted bacteria belonged to known, putatively symbiotic bacterial taxa of corals and were linked to the observed beneficial effect on the coral stress response. Microbiome dynamics in our experiments support the notion that microbiome community evenness and dominance of one or few bacterial species, rather than host-species identity, were drivers for microbiome stability in a holobiont context.ConclusionsOur results suggest that coral recipients likely favor the uptake of putative bacterial symbionts, recommending to include these taxonomic groups in future coral probiotics screening efforts. Our study suggests a scenario where these donor-specific bacterial symbionts might have been more efficient in supporting the recipients to resist heat stress compared to the native symbionts present in the control group. These findings urgently call for further experimental investigation of the mechanisms of action underlying the beneficial effect of CMT and for field-based long-term studies testing the persistence of the effect.

The cryptofauna are the small cryptic organisms that inhabit the interstices of coral colonies and have a great contribution to the biodiversity of the reef. Some of these species are vulnerable to environmental deterioration due to their dependency on living coral. In the 1990s, Culebra Bay, located in the North Pacific of Costa Rica, was considered one of the most important reef areas in the country, with a mean live coral cover over 40%. However, in the last two decades there was a drastic decrease in live coral cover to 5%, due to El Niño events and recurrent harmful phytoplankton blooms. To evaluate the effect of the deterioration of the reef on the cryptofauna, we compare two time periods: before (2003–2004) and after (2013–2014) coral decline. Pocillopora spp. colonies (~20 cm high by ~20 cm wide) were collected and all associated invertebrates removed. Twenty colonies were sampled each period. During the first period, sampled colonies were alive and healthy, whereas a decade later, exposed skeletons of dead colonies were sampled. A total of 3482 invertebrate individuals were found, belonging to 133 species, 72 families, and nine classes. While abundance and diversity were greater during the 2013–2014 period, we hypothesize that this is due to disturbance intensity being intermediate to high. If these conditions are persistent or intensify over time, however, we expect that once all substrate and reef structure is lost, an abrupt decline in cryptofauna abundance and diversity will take place. Reefs with dead corals therefore have a remarkably different composition of the cryptofauna. Obligate commensal fauna were replaced by boring, opportunistic, and facultative species in these habitats. These changes in live coral cover favored an increase in the diversity of organisms, but this enhanced diversity may be temporary as bioerosion reduces dead colonies to skeleton rubble. This change in the cryptofauna community can affect the recovery and sustainability of the reef ecosystem over time. Aim Convergence, stasis and plasticity can frequently confound our understanding of species distributions in the seas. Yet delimiting species and understanding population connectivity across marine environments is mandatory for establishing appropriate management of coral reefs, which are experiencing critical declines. We test whether morphospecies from Pocillopora corals found on outer reef slopes are unique species or species complexes, in order to correctly define their respective distributions and consequently to accurately assess their population connectivity. Location Archipelagos and islands of the Western Indian Ocean and the Southern Pacific (New Caledonia, Tonga, French Polynesia). Taxon Pocillopora eydouxi/meandrina and Pocillopora verrucosa morphospecies (Scleractinia). Methods We analysed the 13‐microsatellite genotypes of 4837 colonies from six understudied ecoregions in the southern part of the genus distribution, to first explore the genetic partitioning within morphospecies. We then characterized the spatial distribution of each delimited species and analysed patterns of genetic diversity and connectivity for each species separately. Results Both morphospecies are complexes of species, each found almost exclusively in the Indian or the Pacific Oceans. Moreover, some of these cryptic species are found in sympatry over their whole distribution, which sometimes was very restricted. However, within each species, genetic diversity and connectivity were relatively high, although some populations were found differentiated for some species, while not for others. Main conclusions A weak connectivity was found between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but high connectivity within both oceans, supporting the existence of a barrier impeding gene flow between both ocean basins in Pocillopora. Although constrained by the same geography and current patterns, some sympatric species present different connectivity patterns, demonstrating the importance of multi‐species connectivity models to set up appropriate management plans.

Anthropocene coral reefs are faced with increasingly severe marine heatwaves and mass coral bleaching mortality events. The ensuing demographic changes to coral assemblages can have long-term impacts on reef community organisation. Thus, understanding the dynamics of subtropical scleractinian coral populations is essential to predict their recovery or extinction post-disturbance. Here we present a 10-yr demographic assessment of a subtropical endemic coral, Pocillopora aliciae (Schmidt-Roach et al. in Zootaxa 3626:576–582, 2013) from the Solitary Islands Marine Park, eastern Australia, paired with long-term temperature records. These coral populations are regularly affected by storms, undergo seasonal thermal variability, and are increasingly impacted by severe marine heatwaves. We examined the demographic processes governing the persistence of these populations using inference from size-frequency distributions based on log-transformed planar area measurements of 7196 coral colonies. Specifically, the size-frequency distribution mean, coefficient of variation, skewness, kurtosis, and coral density were applied to describe population dynamics. Generalised Linear Mixed Effects Models were used to determine temporal trends and test demographic responses to heat stress. Temporal variation in size-frequency distributions revealed various population processes, from recruitment pulses and cohort growth, to bleaching impacts and temperature dependencies. Sporadic recruitment pulses likely support population persistence, illustrated in 2010 by strong positively skewed size-frequency distributions and the highest density of juvenile corals measured during the study. Increasing mean colony size over the following 6 yr indicates further cohort growth of these recruits. Severe heat stress in 2016 resulted in mass bleaching mortality and a 51% decline in coral density. Moderate heat stress in the following years was associated with suppressed P. aliciae recruitment and a lack of early recovery, marked by an exponential decrease of juvenile density (i.e. recruitment) with increasing heat stress. Here, population reliance on sporadic recruitment and susceptibility to heat stress underpin the vulnerability of subtropical coral assemblages to climate change.

Identification of fossil corals is often limited due to poor preservation of external skeleton morphology, especially in the genus Acropora which is widespread across the Indo‐Pacific. Based on skeleton characteristics from thin section, we here develop a link between the internal skeleton structure and external morphology. Ten characteristics were summarized to distinguish Acropora and five related genera, including the type and differentiation of corallites, the skeleton nature of corallites (septa, columellae, dissepiments, wall), and calcification centers within septa. Acropora is distinctive for its dimorphic corallites: axial and radial. Isopora is similar to Acropora but possess more than a single axial corallites. Montipora and Astreopora (family Acroporidae) have monomorphic corallites and a synapticular ring wall, with clustered calcification center in the former and medial lines in the latter. Pocillopora and Porties are classified by distinctive dissepiments, columellae and septa. These microstructural skeleton characteristics were effective in the genus identification of fossil corals from drilled cores in the South China Sea. Eighteen detailed characteristics (ten of axial corallites, four of radial corallites, and four of coenosteum) were used in the Acropora species classification. The axial corallites size and structure (including corallite diameter, synapticular rings, and septa), the septa of radial corallites, and the arrangement of coenosteum were critical indicators for species identification. Background The microbiomes of foundation (habitat-forming) species such as corals and sponges underpin the biodiversity, productivity, and stability of ecosystems. Consumers shape communities of foundation species through trophic interactions, but the role of consumers in dispersing the microbiomes of such species is rarely examined. For example, stony corals rely on a nutritional symbiosis with single-celled endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae) to construct reefs. Most corals acquire Symbiodiniaceae from the environment, but the processes that make Symbiodiniaceae available for uptake are not resolved. Here, we provide the first comprehensive, reef-scale demonstration that predation by diverse coral-eating (corallivorous) fish species promotes the dispersal of Symbiodiniaceae, based on symbiont cell densities and community compositions from the feces of four obligate corallivores, three facultative corallivores, two grazer/detritivores as well as samples of reef sediment and water. Results Obligate corallivore feces are environmental hotspots of Symbiodiniaceae cells: live symbiont cell concentrations in such feces are 5–7 orders of magnitude higher than sediment and water environmental reservoirs. Symbiodiniaceae community compositions in the feces of obligate corallivores are similar to those in two locally abundant coral genera (Pocillopora and Porites), but differ from Symbiodiniaceae communities in the feces of facultative corallivores and grazer/detritivores as well as sediment and water. Combining our data on live Symbiodiniaceae cell densities in feces with in situ observations of fish, we estimate that some obligate corallivorous fish species release over 100 million Symbiodiniaceae cells per 100 m2 of reef per day. Released corallivore feces came in direct contact with coral colonies in the fore reef zone following 91% of observed egestion events, providing a potential mechanism for the transfer of live Symbiodiniaceae cells among coral colonies. Conclusions Taken together, our findings show that fish predation on corals may support the maintenance of coral cover on reefs in an unexpected way: through the dispersal of beneficial coral symbionts in corallivore feces. Few studies examine the processes that make symbionts available to foundation species, or how environmental reservoirs of such symbionts are replenished. This work sets the stage for parallel studies of consumer-mediated microbiome dispersal and assembly in other sessile, habitat-forming species.

El conocimiento de los gusanos bioerosionadores en los arrecifes coralinos del Pacífico Tropical Oriental (PTO) colombiano es escaso. Para saber qué especies perforan estos sustratos coralinos se utilizaron unidades experimentales hechas de ramas muertas de Pocillopora spp., las cuales estuvieron expuestas en los arrecifes coralinos de la isla Gorgona (Pacífico colombiano) durante varios periodos de tiempo. Un total de 571 gusanos de 21 especies fueron recolectados; de estas, 18 son poliquetos y 3 sipúnculos. La mayoría de estas especies corresponden a nuevos registros para el PTO colombiano, en concreto, 13 de las 18 especies de poliquetos y 2 de las 3 de sipúnculos. Estos hallazgos sugieren la necesidad de realizar más estudios con el objetivo de generar conocimiento sobre la biodiversidad de estos grupos poco conocidos en regiones poco estudiadas, como es el caso del PTO colombiano.

The primary last interglacial, marine isotope substage (MIS) 5e records on the Pacific coast of North America, from Washington (USA) to Baja California Sur (Mexico), are found in the deposits of erosional marine terraces. Warmer coasts along the southern Golfo de California host both erosional marine terraces and constructional coral reef terraces. Because the northern part of the region is tectonically active, MIS 5e terrace elevations vary considerably, from a few meters above sea level to as much as 70 m above sea level. The primary paleo-sea-level indicator is the shoreline angle, the junction of the wave-cut platform with the former sea cliff, which forms very close to mean sea level. Most areas on the Pacific coast of North America have experienced uplift since MIS 5e time, but the rate of uplift varies substantially as a function of tectonic setting. Chronology in most places is based on uranium-series ages of the solitary coral Balanophyllia elegans (erosional terraces) or the colonial corals Porites and Pocillopora (constructional reefs). In areas lacking corals, correlation to MIS 5e often can be accomplished using amino acid ratios of fossil mollusks, compared to similar ratios in mollusks that also host dated corals. Uranium-series (U-series) analyses of corals that have experienced largely closed-system histories range from ∼124 to ∼118 ka, in good agreement with ages from MIS 5e reef terraces elsewhere in the world. There is no geomorphic, stratigraphic, or geochronological evidence for more than one high-sea stand during MIS 5e on the Pacific coast of North America. However, in areas of low uplift rate, the outer parts of MIS 5e terraces apparently were re-occupied by the high-sea stand at ∼100 ka (MIS 5c), evident from mixes of coral ages and mixes of molluscan faunas with differing thermal aspects. This sequence of events took place because glacial isostatic adjustment processes acting on North America resulted in regional high-sea stands at ∼100 and ∼80 ka that were higher than is the case in far-field regions, distant from large continental ice sheets. During MIS 5e time, sea surface temperatures (SSTs) off the Pacific coast of North America were higher than is the case at present, evident from extralimital southern species of mollusks found in dated deposits. Apparently, no wholesale shifts in faunal provinces took place, but in MIS 5e time, some species of bivalves and gastropods lived hundreds of kilometers north of their present northern limits, in good agreement with SST estimates derived from foraminiferal records and alkenone-based reconstructions in deep-sea cores. Because many areas of the Pacific coast of North America have been active tectonically for much or all of the Quaternary, many earlier interglacial periods are recorded as uplifted, higher-elevation terraces. In addition, from southern Oregon to northern Baja California, there are U-series-dated corals from marine terraces that formed at ∼80 ka, during MIS 5a. In contrast to MIS 5e, these terrace deposits host molluscan faunas that contain extralimital northern species, indicating cooler SST at the end of MIS 5. Here I present a review and standardized database of MIS 5e sea-level indicators along the Pacific coast of North America and the corresponding dated samples. The database is available in Muhs et al. A survey conducted in Fall 2017 by US Navy scientists around the small, uninhabited island of Farallon de Medinilla (FDM) documented severe bleaching related to extended regional heat stress. Three of the dominant scleractinian genera at FDM, Pocillopora, Leptastrea, and Astreopora, were severely impacted, with more than 90% of colonies from many species exhibiting bleaching. In contrast, several species of Porites corals, another dominant genus at FDM, fared better, with less bleaching (7%–68% by species) than the island average (78%). Bleaching was somewhat higher at shallower depths (1 knot that precluded diving, rare but potentially hazardous ordnance items, survey requirements for georeferenced imagery, and quantitative data collection. The survey protocol designed to accommodate these challenges is presented here, as are lessons from an unsuccessful attempt to delineate bleached coral colonies in photographs using automated object-based image analysis.

A variety of symbionts inhabit colonies of scleractinian corals, the main component of coral reef ecosystems. Obligate symbionts spend almost their whole lives (except the pelagic larvae stage) on or in the host, while facultative symbionts are less tightly associated with the host and easily leave them when food becomes scarce and competition and predation increase. The influence of parasites on the life traits of obligate and facultative symbionts has not yet been studied. The first step in this direction is the study of basic parameters of parasite infracommunities associated with coral symbionts. It was suggested that obligate symbionts that are tightly associated with their hosts and their symbiotic communities are more often infected. An alternative hypothesis suggests that facultative symbionts are more frequently infected because they easily change habitats and consume a broad food spectrum. For several years, we studied parasites of obligate and facultative symbionts (fish, decapods crustaceans, mollusks) associated with the corals Acropora and Pocillopora in the Nha Trang Bay (South China Sea). The highest abundance and diversity of macroparasites (Monogenea, Cestoda, Trematoda, Nematoda, Copepoda) were found in facultative symbionts of corals, fish-parabionts. Obligate fish-inbionts were infected much less often (Cestoda, Trematoda, Nematoda). Obligate symbionts predominated in the invertebrate symbionts, which were also weakly infected. The low abundance and diversity of parasites in obligate symbionts suggest that there should be significant investments in antiparasitic defense, which, together with efficient antipredation defense, minimize the mortality of obligate symbionts. Their fecundity and population number are usually low. Facultative symbionts presumably suffer higher mortality than obligate symbionts, but a more intensive use of resources and higher population numbers may compensate for this. A significant increase in the infection rate with an increase in host body size is typical of facultative symbionts, which are less protected than obligate symbionts. The latter showed low infection levels in all size groups. The results suggest that the role of parasites in shaping the life strategies of symbionts is no less important than the role of predators.

To date, Trapezia spp. crabs have been considered obligate symbionts of pocilloporid corals. They protect their coral hosts from predators and are essential for the health of certain coral species. However, the basic details of this group of crustaceans are lacking, and there is a need for species-level molecular markers. The Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) region harbors important coral communities mainly built by corals of the genus Pocillopora, with three known Trapezia species known to associate with them: Trapezia bidentata, T. formosa and T. corallina. Both taxonomic and molecular analyses were carried out with samples of all three crab species collected from Pocillopora spp. in the Central Mexican Pacific. Analysis of both a mitochondrial and a nuclear gene revealed only two species, T. corallina and T. bidentata. T. formosa however appears to be a morphotype of T. bidentata. The use of integrative taxonomy for this group has increased the knowledge of the biodiversity not only of the study area, but of the whole TEP and will enhance the future study of the Trapezia&ndash, Pocillopora symbiosis.

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) are a fundamental tool for the non-intrusive determination of biomass, a unit of measure that facilitates the quantification of ecosystem and fisheries productivity. LWRs have been defined and broadly applied for many marine species across a range of ecosystems, especially regarding fishes. However, LWRs are yet to be determined for the majority of marine taxa, particularly for small cryptic organisms that are difficult to census and poorly described. On coral reefs, the motile cryptofauna represent the greatest density and diversity of metazoan taxa that likely support critical steps in trophic pathways, but little empirical data exist beyond biodiversity assessments. We evaluated LWRs for 42 groups of motile cryptofauna across four microhabitats (live Acropora, live Pocillopora, dead branching coral and coral rubble) in Palau, Western Micronesia. We employed a robust methodology to determine LWRs by comparing the suitability of a series of linear, quadratic, polynomial and power models. Using the best-fit equations for each group, we provide the first documented LWRs for motile cryptofauna, namely at the level of family. LWRs were well fit (R2 > 0.90) for 45% of the groups and reasonable (R2 > 0.70) for 76%. The presence, size and weight of cryptofauna varied among microhabitats with the size distribution of 13 groups significantly influenced by habitat type. Establishment of these LWRs provides critical baseline information regarding an overlooked group on coral reefs, making population data on the cryptofauna more accessible to support future research aiming to characterise the roles of these taxa in ecosystem functioning and trophodynamics.
