Abstract

Various nuclear envelope derivatives, such as the annulate lamellae, the intranuclear tubules as well as the nuclear projections and pockets may be observed electron microscopically in tumour cells.In a series of eight gastric adenocarcinomas, ultrastructural features of nuclear envelope changes were analyzed and correlated to the biology of the tumours.Histologically, three tumours were intestinal-type adenocarcinomas and showed annulate lamellae in the cytoplasm of some tumor cells. Five tumors were mixed-type adenocarcinomas, with a solid growth pattern; two of these tumours were characterized by the presence of intranuclear tubules, whereas the remaining three tumours exhibited nuclear pockets and projections. Seven out of eight patients died due to metastatic disease during the follow-up period (median 31 months).Ultrastructural evaluation of pleomorphism of the nuclear envelope may be an ancillary method for the pathologist in the study of nuclear grading of gastric carcinomas.

Abstract

This paper provides an empirical synthesis of the relationship involving the service recovery process in experimental studies. First, the strength, direction and significance of the pairwise relationships involved in service recovery was assessed. Then, methodolological characteristics coded as moderator variables were used to account for variability in study effects. Results indicate that distributive justice has the largest effect on satisfaction with complaint handling, followed by procedural and interactional, justice. The results also suggest that interactional and procedural justice have a stronger effect on satisfaction with complaint handling in US studies. Results also highlight how the pursue of originality leads to a lack of replication in experimental designs, and therefore, to the vulnerability of the effect size estimates.

Abstract

This paper presents a framework supporting the definition and implementation of virtual environment inhabited by interacting situated agents defined according to the Multilayered Multi-Agent Situated System model. The framework supports the specification and execution of visually rich 3D virtual environment endowed by the presence of mobile agents acting and interacting inside it according to a multi-agent model. The paper briefly describes the related works and possible application scenarios for the framework, then it introduces the multi-agent model underlying the framework and its basic architecture. Sample applications are also described so as to show the potential of the framework in executing models comprising several hundreds of agents producing an effective visualization of the generated dynamics.

Abstract

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to characterize the morphological features of thymoma metastases in lymph nodes and to evaluate the possibility of their subtyping according to the 2004 WHO classification of thymus tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 210 thymoma cases in our series of thymic epithelial tumors (TET), including their recurrences and lymphogenous metastases. Three cases of lymph node metastases, one case occurring synchronously with the primary tumor and one synchronously with the first relapse (both in intrathoracic location) and one case of metastasis observed in a laterocervical lymph node subsequently to two thymoma relapses were found. RESULTS: The metastatic nodes were variably but extensively involved in all cases. The histological features were similar in both primary tumors and metastases. Thymoma metastases were subtyped according to the WHO classification as B3 (one case) and B2 (two cases), and distinctive features in comparison to metastatic epithelial neoplasias from other sites were observed. CONCLUSION: Thymoma lymph node metastases, although rare, can be subtyped according to the WHO classification on the basis of their morphological and immunohistochemical features. Clinically, the presence of nodal metastases may herald subsequent relapses and further metastases even in extrathoracic sites.

Abstract

Only 5-10% of colorectal cancer patients (pts) with liver metastases are eligible for surgical resection. Regional and systemic chemotherapy represents the best therapeutic options for unresectable metastases.In a randomized phase II trial 123 pts were enrolled with a minimum follow-up of 3 years. In Arm A 58 pts were submitted to intraarterial continuous infusion of cisplatin (CDDP), 24 mg/m2/day, while the other 65 were included in Arm B (bolus of CDDP, 24 mg/m2/day). All the pts were also given i.v. escalating doses of fluorouracil. Response was evaluated after a minimum of 3 cycles.Toxicityor = G3 was lower in Arm B. The objective response rate was 52% in all the series, the complete responses being 17.3% (17.6% vs. 17% in Arms A and B, respectively). The overall median survival was 18 months rising to 28 months in the responders.CDDP HAI provided similar results as FUdR in terms of response to treatment. Moreover, long-term survivors were unexpectedly observed.

Abstract

We measured the non-radiative intersubband relaxation time in n-type modulation-doped Ge/SiGe multi-quantum wells of different thickness by means of degenerate pump-probe experiments. The photon energy was tuned to be resonant with the lowest conduction band intersubband transitionenergy (14-29 meV), as measured by terahertz absorption spectroscopy and in agreement with bandstructure calculations. Temperature-independent lifetimes in excess of 30 ps were observed.

Abstract

Background: This multi-centre phase II clinical trial is the first prospective evaluation of radioembolisation of patients with colorectal liver metastases (mCRC) who failed previous oxaliplatin- and irinotecan-based systemic chemotherapy regimens.Methods: Eligible patients had adequate hepatic, haemopoietic and renal function, and an absence of major hepatic vascular anomalies and hepato-pulmonary shunting. Gastroduodenal and right gastric arteries were embolised before hepatic arterial administration of yttrium-90 resin microspheres (median activity, 1.7 GBq; range, 0.9-2.2).Results: Of 50 eligible patients, 38 (76%) had received > or =4 lines of chemotherapy. Most presented with synchronous disease (72%), >4 hepatic metastases (58%), 25-50% replacement of total liver volume (60%) and bilateral spread (70%). Early and intermediate (>48 h) WHO G1-2 adverse events (mostly fever and pain) were observed in 16 and 22% of patients respectively. Two died due to renal failure at 40 days or liver failure at 60 days respectively. By intention-to-treat analysis using Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours, 1 patient (2%) had a complete response, 11 (22%) partial response, 12 (24%) stable disease, 22 (44%) progressive disease; 4 (8%) were non-evaluable. Median overall survival was 12.6 months (95% CI, 7.0-18.3); 2-year survival was 19.6%.Conclusion: Radioembolisation produced meaningful response and disease stabilisation in patients with advanced, unresectable and chemorefractory mCRC.
