Leptin is the pivotal modulator in the onset and progression of breast cancer and obesity. Celastrol, which is extracted from the roots of Tripterygium wilfordi plants, exerts various anticancer bioactivities and has recently emerged as a candidate to treat obesity by improving leptin sensitivity. However, the relationship between leptin and celastrol in the treatment of breast cancer is unknown. Here, the growth and migration of MCF-7 cells induced by leptin were tested to demonstrate the antineoplastic activity of celastrol. Transcriptomic analysis and western blotting were conducted to explore the biological roles of leptin in treating breast cancer with celastrol. The present findings showed that celastrol remarkably reversed leptin-triggered cell proliferation and migration in MCF-7 cells. Fifty-two mRNAs with fivefold higher counts and 149 mRNAs with fivefold lower counts were identified in the celastrol-treated MCF-7 cells. According to the GO and KEGG analyses, the effects of celastrol on MCF-7 cells forced lipid metabolism and the endocrine system. Moreover, leptin treatment induced phosphorylation of leptin receptor and PI3K/AKT in MCF-7 cells, whereas pretreatment with celastrol partly abrogated leptin activation. The binding of celastrol to the leptin receptor was also confirmed by molecular docking. The antitumor effect of celastrol is proposed to be mediated by its binding to the leptin receptor and controlled downregulation of the PI3K/AKT pathway.

Grape anthracnose caused by Elsinoë ampelina (Shear) is one of the most serious fungal diseases that lead to the quality reduction and yield losses of grape (Vitis vinifera ‘Red Globe’) berries. In the present study, metabolome and transcriptome analyses were conducted using grape berries in the field after infection with E. ampelina at 7, 10, and 13 days to identify the metabolic properties of berries. In total, 132 metabolites with significant differences and 6,877 differentially expressed genes were detected and shared by three comparisons. The analyses demonstrated that phenylpropanoid, flavonoid, stilbenoid, and nucleotide metabolisms were enriched in E. ampelina-infected grape berries but not amino acid metabolism. Phenolamide, terpene, and polyphenole contents also accumulated during E. ampelina infection. The results provided evidence of the enhancement of secondary metabolites such as resveratrol, α-viniferin, ε-viniferin, and lignins involved in plant defense. The results showed the plant defense-associated metabolic reprogramming caused by E. ampelina infection in grape berry and provided a global metabolic mechanism under E. ampelina stimulation.[Graphic: see text] Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). Introduction: A combination of deep eutectic solvent with ethanol was developed for pretreatment of Broussonetia papyrifera to effectively extract lignin and promote the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis.Methods: In order to further explore the optimal conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis, a central composite design method was applied.Results and Discussion: The correlation between each factor and glucose yield was obtained, and the optimal conditions was 160°C, 60 min, the ratio of DES to E was 1/1 (mol/mol). The results showed that compared with control, the glucose yield increased by 130.67% under the optimal pretreatment conditions. Furthermore, the specific surface area of biomass was increased by 66.95%, and the content of xylan and lignin was decreased by 86.71% and 85.83%. The correlation between xylan/lignin removal and enzymatic hydrolysis showed that the removal of lignin facilitated the glucose yield more significantly than that of xylan. To further explore the lignin valorization, the structural and antioxidant analysis of recovered lignin revealed that high temperature was favorable for lignin with good antioxidant performance. This pretreatment is a promising method for separating lignin with high antioxidant activity and improving cellulose digestibility.

Background: Zhijing Powder (ZJP) is a traditional Chinese medicine containing two kinds of Chinese medicine. Those studies analyze the molecular mechanism of ZJP in treating hypertension through network pharmacology, combined with animal experiments. Methods: First, the effective ingredients and potential targets of the drug were obtained through drug databases, while the targets of disease obtained through disease target databases. The potential targets, cellular bioanalysis and signaling pathways were found in some platforms by analyzing collected targets. Further experiments were conducted to verify the effect and mechanism of drugs on cold and high salt in an induced-hypertension rat model. Results: There are 17 effective components of centipedes and 10 of scorpions, with 464 drug targets obtained after screening. A total of 1263 hypertension targets were obtained after screening and integration, resulting in a protein-protein interaction network (PPI) with 145 points and 1310 edges. Gene ontology (GO) analysis shows that blood circulation regulation and activation of G protein-coupled receptors are mainly biological processes. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis shows that neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, calcium signaling pathways, PI3K-AKT signaling pathways are the most abundant gene-enriched pathway. Animal experiments indicated that ZJP can reduce blood pressure (BP), affect expression of the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway, and improve oxidative stress in the body. Conclusion: ZJP ameliorates oxidative stress and reduces BP in hypertensive rats caused by cold stimuli and high salt, revealing its effect on the expression of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in the rat aorta.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are a new environmental contaminant that poses a major hazard to humans and the environment. This research discusses the methods and drawbacks of two ARG removal approaches, constructed wetlands (CWs) and photocatalysis. CWs primarily rely on the synergistic effects of substrate adsorption, plant uptake, and microbial processes to remove ARGs. The removal of ARGs can be influenced by wetland plants, substrate type, wetland type, and hydraulic conditions. The absolute abundance of ARGs in effluent decreased, but their relative abundance increased. Photocatalysis deactivates ARGs predominantly through reactive oxygen species, with removal effectiveness determined by catalyst type, radiation type, and radiation intensity. The drawback is that it exposes intracellular resistance genes, perhaps increasing the risk of ARG spread. To address the current shortcomings, this paper proposes the feasibility of combining a constructed wetland with photocatalysis technology, which provides a novel strategy for ARG removal.

Baicalin (BA) is among the most effective and abundant flavonoids extracted from Scutellaria baicalensis that may be utilized to treat diseases associated with hepatic fibrosis (HF). Through network pharmacology, gut microbiota, and experimental validation, this research intends to elucidate the multi-target mechanism of BA on HF. BA targets were screened using databases and literature. As a result, In the anti-HF mechanism, the BA and 191 HF-associated targets interact, with 9 specific targets indicating that the BA’s anti-HF mechanism is closely linked to gut microbiota. Consequently, rat intestinal content samples were obtained and examined using 16S rRNA sequencing. In the BA-treated group, the gut microbiota was positively regulated at the phylum,and genus levels, with Lactobacillus performing significantly. The study concluded that BA has a multi-targeted anti-HF effect and has changed the gut microbial ecosystem.

Abstract The OSIRIS detector is a subsystem of the liquid scintillator filling chain of the JUNO reactor neutrino experiment. Its purpose is to validate the radiopurity of the scintillator to assure that all components of the JUNO scintillator system work to specifications and only neutrino-grade scintillator is filled into the JUNO Central Detector. The aspired sensitivity level of $$10^{-16}\hbox { g/g}$$ 10 - 16 g/g of $$^{238}\hbox {U}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}\hbox {Th}$$ 232 Th requires a large ( $$\sim 20\,\hbox {m}^3$$ ∼ 20 m 3 ) detection volume and ultralow background levels. The present paper reports on the design and major components of the OSIRIS detector, the detector simulation as well as the measuring strategies foreseen and the sensitivity levels to U/Th that can be reached in this setup.

Abstract JUNO is a massive liquid scintillator detector with a primary scientific goal of determining the neutrino mass ordering by studying the oscillated anti-neutrino flux coming from two nuclear power plants at 53 km distance. The expected signal anti-neutrino interaction rate is only 60 counts per day (cpd), therefore a careful control of the background sources due to radioactivity is critical. In particular, natural radioactivity present in all materials and in the environment represents a serious issue that could impair the sensitivity of the experiment if appropriate countermeasures were not foreseen. In this paper we discuss the background reduction strategies undertaken by the JUNO collaboration to reduce at minimum the impact of natural radioactivity. We describe our efforts for an optimized experimental design, a careful material screening and accurate detector production handling, and a constant control of the expected results through a meticulous Monte Carlo simulation program. We show that all these actions should allow us to keep the background count rate safely below the target value of 10 Hz (i.e. ∼1 cpd accidental background) in the default fiducial volume, above an energy threshold of 0.7 MeV.

Abstract Atmospheric neutrinos are one of the most relevant natural neutrino sources that can be exploited to infer properties about cosmic rays and neutrino oscillations. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) experiment, a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector with excellent energy resolution is currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to detect several atmospheric neutrinos per day given the large volume. A study on the JUNO detection and reconstruction capabilities of atmospheric $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ fluxes is presented in this paper. In this study, a sample of atmospheric neutrino Monte Carlo events has been generated, starting from theoretical models, and then processed by the detector simulation. The excellent timing resolution of the 3” PMT light detection system of JUNO detector and the much higher light yield for scintillation over Cherenkov allow to measure the time structure of the scintillation light with very high precision. Since $$\nu _e$$ ν e and $$\nu _\mu $$ ν μ interactions produce a slightly different light pattern, the different time evolution of light allows to discriminate the flavor of primary neutrinos. A probabilistic unfolding method has been used, in order to infer the primary neutrino energy spectrum from the detector experimental observables. The simulated spectrum has been reconstructed between 100 MeV and 10 GeV, showing a great potential of the detector in the atmospheric low energy region.

Abstract Objective JNK pathway‐associated phosphatase (JKAP) is previously reported to regulate immune/inflammatory process via T‐cell signaling, and closely involves in neurological diseases, while its implication in Parkinson's disease (PD) is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation of JKAP with Th1/Th2/Th17 cells and their clinical roles in PD patients, and then further explore the effect of JKAP on regulating CD4+ T‐cell differentiation in PD. Methods Totally 50 PD patients and 50 age‐/gender‐matched controls were enrolled. Their blood samples were collected and proposed to ELISA and flow cytometry assays for JKAP, Th1, Th2, and Th17 measurements. In vitro, CD4+ T cells were isolated from PD patients then transfected with JKAP overexpression and knockdown Lentivirus, followed by detection of markers (CD25+ cell proportion, CD69+ cell proportion, IFN‐γ, IL10, and IL17). Results JKAP was downregulated in PD patients compared to controls, which also showed good potency to discriminate them. Besides, JKAP negatively correlated with Th1 and Th17 cell proportions, but did not associate with Th2 cell proportion in PD patients; Interestingly, JKAP did not correlated with Th1, Th2, or Th17 cell proportions in controls. Furthermore, JKAP correlated with some parts of unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE) score. In vitro, JKAP overexpression repressed CD4+ T‐cell activation and its differentiation into Th1 and Th17 cells in PD, while JKAP knockdown appeared opposite effect. Interpretation JKAP associates with disease risk and severity, correlates with Th1 and Th17 cells, and regulates CD4+ T‐cell activation/differentiation in PD.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the value of strain elastography (SE) and shear wave elastography (SWE) following the World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) guidelines and recommendations in the real world in distinguishing benign and malignant breast lesions and reducing biopsy of BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) 4a lesions.MethodsThis prospective study included 274 breast lesions. The elastography score (ES) by the Tsukuba score, the strain ratio (SR) for SE, and Emax for SWE of the lesion(A) and the regions(A’) included the lesion and the margin (0.5-5 mm) surrounding the lesion were measured. The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC were calculated and compared by the cutoff values recommended by WFUMB guidelines.ResultsWhen scores of 1 to 3 were classified as probably benign by WFUMB recommendation, the ES was significantly higher in malignant lesions compared to benign lesions (p < 0.05) in all lesions. For the cohort by size >20 mm, the sensitivity was 100%, and the specificity was 45.5%. ES had the highest AUC: 0.79(95% CI 0.72-0.86) with a sensitivity of 96.2%, and a specificity of 61.8% for the cohort by size ≤20 mm. For the Emax-A’-S2.5mm, when the high stiffness would be considered with Emax above 80 kPa in SWE, the malignant lesions were diagnosed with a sensitivity of 95.8%, a specificity of 43.3% for all lesions, a sensitivity of 88.5% for lesions with size ≤20 mm, and sensitivity of 100.0% for lesions with size >20 mm. In 84 lesions of BI-RADS category 4a, if category 4a lesions with ES of 1-3 points or Emax-A’-S2.5 less than 80 kPa could be downgraded to category 3, 52 (61.9%) lesions could be no biopsy, including two malignancies. If category 4a lesions with ES of 1-3 points and Emax-A’-S2.5 less than 80kPa could be downgraded to category 3, 23 (27.4%) lesions could be no biopsy, with no malignancy.ConclusionsThe elastography score for SE and Emax-A’ for SWE after our modification were beneficial in the diagnosis of breast cancer. The combination of SWE and SE could effectively reduce the biopsy rate of BI-RADS category 4a lesions.

In this work, the removal efficiency and mechanism of various constructed wetlands microcosm systems on antibiotic wastewater, as well as the biological community response of microalgae and microorganisms were explored. Overall, the algal-bacteria symbiosis in conjunction with the gravel matrix had the most comprehensive treatment efficiency for antibiotic wastewater. However, pollutants such as high-concentration antibiotics impaired the biological community and functions. In the systems fed with microorganisms, both abundance and diversity of them were significantly reduced comparing with the initial value. According to the correlation analysis revealed that the pollutants removal rate increased with the addition of the relative abundance of some bacterial genera, while decreased with the addition of relative abundance of other bacterial genera. The presence of gravel matrix could lessen the stressful effect of antibiotics and other pollutants on the growth of microalgae and microorganisms, as well as improved treatment efficiency of antibiotic wastewater. Based on the findings of the study, the combination of gravel matrix and algal-bacteria symbiosis can considerably increase the capacity of constructed wetlands to treat antibiotic wastewater and protect biological community, which is an environmentally friendly way.

Naringenin (Nar) is a natural flavonoid extracted from citrus fruits with abundant pharmacological properties against cardiac diseases, but existing studies are unsystematic and scattered. The present research systematically investigates the mechanism of action of Nar in the treatment of myocardial ischemia (MI). Network pharmacology was used to analyze the relevant targets of Nar against MI as well as the biological mechanisms. The protective effect of Nar was initially assessed in H9c2 cells induced by CoCl2. In acutely isolated rat cardiomyocytes, Nar was further explored for effects on L-type Ca2+ currents, cell contractility and Ca2+ transients by using patch-clamp technique and Ion Optix system. Network pharmacology analysis indicated that Nar improved apoptosis, mitochondrial energy metabolism, inflammation and oxidative stress. Experimental validation demonstrated that Nar decreased ROS and MDA levels and increased antioxidant activity (e.g., GSH-PX, SOD, and CAT), mitochondrial membrane potential, ATP and Ca2+-ATPase contents. Nar also markedly reduced inflammatory factor levels, apoptosis, and intracellular Ca2+ concentrations in H9c2 cells. Based on the experimental results, it is speculated that Ca2+ signals play an essential role in the process of Nar against MI. Thus, we further confirmed that Nar significantly inhibited the L-type Ca2+ currents, contractility and Ca2+ transients in acutely isolated cardiomyocytes. The inhibition of Ca2+ overload by Nar may be a novel cardioprotective mechanism. The present study may serve as a basis for future clinical research, and Nar as a Ca2+ channel inhibitor may provide new perspectives for the treatment of myocardial ischemic diseases.

The safety of autonomous driving is closely linked to accurate depth perception. With the continuous development of autonomous driving, depth completion has become one of the crucial methods in this field. However, current depth completion methods have major shortcomings in small objects. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an end-to-end architecture with adaptive spatial feature fusion by encoder–decoder (ASFF-ED) module for depth completion. The architecture is built on the basis of the network architecture proposed in this paper, and is able to extract depth information adaptively with different weights on the specified feature map, which effectively solves the problem of insufficient depth accuracy of small objects. At the same time, this paper also proposes a depth map visualization method with a semi-quantitative visualization, which makes the depth information more intuitive to display. Compared with the currently available depth map visualization methods, this method has stronger quantitative analysis and horizontal comparison ability. Through experiments of ablation study and comparison, the results show that the method proposed in this paper exhibits a lower root-mean-squared error (RMSE) and better small object detection performance on the KITTI dataset.

Signs and symptoms involving multiple organ systems which persist for weeks or months to years after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection (also known as PASC or long COVID) are common complications of individuals with COVID-19. We recently reported pathophysiological changes in various organs post-acute infection of mice with mouse hepatitis virus-1 (MHV-1, a coronavirus) (7 days) and after long-term post-infection (12 months). One of the organs severely affected in this animal model is the kidney, which correlated well with human studies showing kidney injury post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our long-term post-infection pathological observation in kidneys includes the development of edema and inflammation of the renal parenchyma, severe acute tubular necrosis, and infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes, in addition to changes observed in both acute and long-term post-infection, which include tubular epithelial cell degenerative changes, peritubular vessel congestion, proximal and distal tubular necrosis, hemorrhage in the interstitial tissue, and vacuolation of renal tubules. These findings strongly suggest the possible development of renal fibrosis, in particular in the long-term post-infection. Accordingly, we investigated whether the signaling system that is known to initiate the above-mentioned changes in kidneys in other conditions is also activated in long-term post-MHV-1 infection. We found increased TGF-β1, FGF23, NGAL, IL-18, HIF1-α, TLR2, YKL-40, and B2M mRNA levels in long-term post-MHV-1 infection, but not EGFR, TNFR1, BCL3, and WFDC2. However, only neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) increased in acute infection (7 days). Immunoblot studies showed an elevation in protein levels of HIF1-α, TLR-2, and EGFR in long-term post-MHV-1 infection, while KIM-1 and MMP-7 protein levels are increased in acute infection. Treatment with a synthetic peptide, SPIKENET (SPK), which inhibits spike protein binding, reduced NGAL mRNA in acute infection, and decreased TGF-β1, BCL3 mRNA, EGFR, HIF1-α, and TLR-2 protein levels long-term post-MHV-1 infection. These findings suggest that fibrotic events may initiate early in SARS-CoV-2 infection, leading to pronounced kidney fibrosis in long COVID. Targeting these factors therapeutically may prevent acute or long-COVID-associated kidney complications.

Purpose: Models for predicting postoperative overall survival of patients with metaplastic breast cancer have not yet been discovered. The purpose of this study is to establish a model for predicting postoperative overall survival of metaplastic breast cancer patients.Methods: Patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database diagnosed with MBC from 2010 to 2015 were selected and randomized into a SEER training cohort and an internal validation cohort. We identified independent prognostic factors after MBC surgery based on multivariate Cox regression analysis to construct nomograms. The discriminative and predictive power of the nomogram was assessed using Harrell’s consistency index (C-index) and calibration plots. The decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the model. We verify the performance of the prediction model with a Chinese multi-center data set.Results: Multifactorial analysis showed that age at diagnosis, T stage, N stage, M stage, tumor size, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy were important prognostic factors affecting OS. The C-index of nomogram was higher than the eighth edition of the AJCC TNM grading system in the SEER training set and validation set. The calibration chart showed that the survival rate predicted by the nomogram is close to the actual survival rate. It has also been verified in the SEER internal verification set and the Chinese multi-center data set.Conclusion: The prognostic model can accurately predict the post-surgical OS rate of patients with MBC and can provide a reference for doctors and patients to establish treatment plans.

Abstract HgTe film is widely used for quantum Hall well studies and devices, as it has unique properties, like band gap inversion, carrier‐type switch, and topological evolution depending on the film thickness modulation near the so‐called critical thickness (63.5 Å), while its counterpart bulk materials do not hold these nontrivial properties at ambient pressure. Here, much richer transport properties emerging in bulk HgTe crystal through pressure‐tuning are reported. Not only the above‐mentioned abnormal properties can be realized in a 400 nm thick bulk HgTe single crystal, but superconductivity is also discovered in a series of high‐pressure phases. Combining crystal structure, electrical transport, and Hall coefficient measurements, a p‐n carrier type switching is observed in the first high‐pressure cinnabar phase. Superconductivity emerges after the semiconductor‐to‐metal transition at 3.9 GPa and persists up to 54 GPa, crossing four high‐pressure phases with an increased upper critical field. Density functional theory calculations confirm that a surface‐dominated topologic band structure contributes these exotic properties under high pressure. This discovery presents broad and efficient tuning effects by pressure on the lattice structure and electronic modulations compared to the thickness‐dependent critical properties in 2D and 3D topologic insulators and semimetals.

Abstract Hyperoxia-induced lung injury plays a key role in the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), characterized by inflammatory injury and impaired lung development in preterm infants. Although BPD is a predictor of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes, currently it is uncertain how lung injury contributes to brain injury in preterm infants. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous group of cell-derived membranous structures that regulate intercellular and inter-organ communications. Gasdermin D (GSDMD) has emerged as a key executor of inflammasome-mediated cell death and inflammation. In this study, we utilized a neonatal rat model of BPD to assess if hyperoxia stimulates lung release of circulating EVs and if these EVs induce lung and brain injury. We found that hyperoxia-exposed rats had elevated numbers of plasma-derived EVs compared to rats maintained in room air. These EVs also had increased cargos of surfactant protein C, a marker of type II alveolar epithelial cells (AEC), and the active (p30) form of GSDMD. When these EVs were adoptively transferred into normal newborn rats via intravenous injection, they were taken up both by lung and brain tissues. Moreover, EVs from hyperoxic animals induced not only the pathological hallmarks of BPD, but also brain inflammatory injury in recipient rats, as well as inducing cell death in cultured pulmonary vascular endothelial cells and neural stem cells (NSC). Similarly, hyperoxia-exposed cultured AEC-like cells released EVs that also contained increased GSDMD-p30 and these EVs induced pyroptotic cell death in NSC. Overall, these data indicate that hyperoxia-activated circulating EVs mediate a lung to brain crosstalk resulting in brain injury and suggest a mechanism that links lung injury and neurodevelopmental impairment in BPD infants.

Abstract We present the calibration strategy for the 20 kton liquid scintillator central detector of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). By utilizing a comprehensive multiple-source and multiple-positional calibration program, in combination with a novel dual calorimetry technique exploiting two independent photosensors and readout systems, we demonstrate that the JUNO central detector can achieve a better than 1% energy linearity and a 3% effective energy resolution, required by the neutrino mass ordering determination.

Rice cultivated in Cd-polluted acidic paddy soil poses important health risks in China. Decreasing Cd accumulation in rice is important for food safety and human health. Early rice cultivar ZY-819 and late rice cultivar XWX-13 with low Cd-accumulation potentials, and early rice cultivar LY-996 and late rice cultivar YZX with high Cd-accumulation potentials, were grown in mildly polluted double-cropping paddy fields (Cd content 0.3–0.6 mg kg−1). The effects of adding biochar (10 t ha−2), lime (1500 kg ha−2), and silicon–calcium fertilizer (SC; 2250 kg ha−2) and foliar spraying with silicon fertilizer solution (Si; 1500 g ha−2) on Cd uptake and transport in rice, were assessed in plot experiments. The soil amendments and foliar spraying decreased the Cd content of brown rice from the high Cd-accumulation potential cultivars. The soil amendments decreased the Cd content of LY-996 and YZX brown rice by 25.24–32.40% and 32.99–44.16%, respectively, and SC decreased the Cd content most. Foliar spraying with Si decreased the Cd content of LY-996 and YZC brown rice by 23.79% and 26.40%, respectively. When soil amendments and foliar spraying were combined, the Cd content of brown rice was decreased most by the SC–Si treatment. Compared with the control, the SC–Si treatment decreased the Cd content of LY-996, ZY-819, YZX, and XWX-13 brown rice by 45.63%, 35.67%, 52.79%, and 32.03%, respectively. Soil amendments can effectively decrease Cd uptake by rice roots and Cd migration from roots to shoots. Compared with the control, the soil amendments increased the soil pH and decreased Cd availability. The strongest effects were for the lime and SC treatments. Foliar spraying with Si can effectively decrease Cd translocation through stems and leaves to brown rice. Applying SC fertilizer and foliar spraying with Si is the best method for decreasing the Cd content of rice grown in mildly Cd-polluted paddy fields.

Abstract A simple fabrication of end-bonded contacts InAsSb NW (nanowire) array detector to weak light is demonstrated in this study. The detector is fabricated using InAsSb NW array grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrate. The metal-induced gap states are induced by the end-bonded contact which suppresses the dark current at various temperatures. The existence of the interface dipole due to the interfacial gap states enhances the light excitation around the local field and thus upgrades the photoresponsivity and photodetectivity to the weak light. The light intensity of the infrared light source in this report is 14 nW/cm2 which is about 3 to 4 orders of magnitude less than the laser source. The responsivity of the detector has reached 28.57 A/W at room temperature with the light (945 nm) radiation, while the detectivity is 4.81 × 1011 cm·Hz1/2 W−1. Anomalous temperature-dependent performance emerges at the variable temperature experiments, and we discussed the detailed mechanism behind the nonlinear relationship between the photoresponse of the device and temperatures. Besides, the optoelectronic characteristics of the detector clarified that the light-trapping effect and photogating effect of the NWs can enhance the photoresponse to the weak light across ultraviolet to near-infrared. These results highlight the feasibility of the InAsSb NW array detector to the infrared weak light without a cooling system.

Elsinoë ampelina is an ascomycetous fungus that causes grape anthracnose, a potentially devastating disease worldwide. In this study, a dual RNA-seq analysis was used to simultaneously monitor the fungal genes related to pathogenesis and grape genes related to defense during the interaction at 2, 3, 4, and 5 days postinoculation. Consistent with their potential roles in pathogenicity, genes for carbohydrate-active enzymes, secondary metabolite synthesis, pathogen-host interaction, and those encoding secreted proteins are upregulated during infection. Based on Agrobacterium tumefaciens–mediated transient assays in Nicotiana benthamiana, we further showed that eight and nine candidate effectors, respectively, suppressed BAX- and INF1-mediated programmed cell death. The host response was characterized by the induction of multiple defense systems against E. ampelina, including synthesis of phenylpropanoids, stilbenes, and terpenoid biosynthesis, cell-wall modifications, regulation by phytohormones, and expression of defense-related genes. Together, these findings offer new insights into molecular mechanisms underlying the grape–E. ampelina interaction.

In this paper, based on the classic Kermack-McKendrick SIR model, we propose an ordinary differential equation model to re-examine the COVID-19 epidemics in Wuhan where this disease initially broke out. The focus is on the impact of all those major non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented by the local public healthy authorities and government during the epidemics. We use the data publicly available and the nonlinear least-squares solver lsqnonlin built in MATLAB to estimate the model parameters. Then we explore the impact of those NPIs, particularly the timings of these interventions, on the epidemics. The results can help people review the responses to the outbreak of the COVID-19 in Wuhan, while the proposed model also offers a framework for studying epidemics of COVID-19 and/or other similar diseases in other places, and accordingly helping people better prepare for possible future outbreaks of similar diseases.

The aquaculture industry is vital in providing a valuable protein food source for humans, but generates a huge amount of solid and dissolved wastes that pose great risks to the environment and aquaculture sustainability. Suspended solids (in short SS), one of the aquaculture wastes, are very difficult to be treated due to their high organic contents. The bioconversion from wastewater, food effluents, and activated sludge into poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a sustainable alternative to generate an additional income and could be highly attractive to the agricultural and environmental management firms. However, little is known about its potential application in aquaculture wastes. In the present study, we first determined that 7.2% of SS was PHB. Then, the production of PHB was increased two-fold by the optimal fermentation conditions of wheat bran and microbial cocktails at a C/N ratio of 12. Also, the PHB-enriched SS showed a higher total ammonia nitrogen removal rate. Importantly, we further demonstrated that the PHB-enriched SS as a feed could promote fish growth and up-regulate the expression of the immune-related genes. Our study developed an eco-friendly and simple approach to transforming problematic SS wastes into PHB-enriched high-quality food for omnivorous fish, which will increase the usage efficiency of SS and provide a cheaper diet for aquatic animals.

Abstract Purpose Bioremediation is widely considered the most desirable procedure for remediation of oil-contaminated soil. Few studies have focused on the relationships among microbial community, functional genes of biodegradation, and geochemical processes during field bioremediation, which provide crucial information for bioremediation. Methods In the current study, the microbial community and functional genes related to hydrocarbon and nitrogen metabolism, combined with the soil physico-chemical properties, were used to diagnose a set of bioremediation experiments, including bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and phytoremediation, at the field scale. Result The results showed that the added nutrients stimulated a variety of microorganisms, including hydrocarbon degradation bacteria and nitrogen metabolism microorganisms. The functional genes reflected the possibility of aerobic denitrification in the field, which may be helpful in biodegradation. Biostimulation was found to be the most suitable of the studied bioremediation methods in the field. Conclusion We offer a feasible approach to obtain useful bioremediation information and assist with the development of appropriate remediation procedures. The findings improve our knowledge of the interactions between microorganisms and edaphic parameters.

Abstract Purpose The composition of endophytic communities has been shown to depend on grape genotypes and viticultural managements in leaves, stems, and berries of grape, but there have been relatively few reports exploring fungal endophytes associated with wild grape and foliar age. Methods The regions of internally transcribed spacer (ITS) were sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq to determine the diversity of fungal endophytes associated with European grape (Vitis vinifera cv. Red Globe) and Chinese wild grape (Vitis amurensis cv. Shuangyou) in young and mature leaves. Results A total of 3 phyla, 23 classes, 51 orders, 97 families, and 150 fungal genera were identified. Young leaves have significantly higher diversity and richness than that in mature leaves in both cultivars. Endophytic fungal diversity was greater in wild grapevines (119 genera) than in cultivated grapevines (81 genera) in both young and mature leaves. Endophytic fungal community structure was also significantly different between young leaves and mature leaves as well as in both cultivars based on statistical tests of ANOSIM and MRPP. Conclusions Our results suggest that endophytic fungal communities were strongly affected by foliar age and domestication, which are crucial factors in establishing symbiotic associations with a selective enrichment for specific endophytes.

Elsinoë ampelina is an ascomycetous fungus that causes grape anthracnose, a potentially devastating disease worldwide. Here, we report a 28.29 Mb high-quality genome sequence of E. ampelina YL-1 that encodes 8,057 predicted protein-coding genes and represents the first sequenced genome assembly of E. ampelina. This study adds to the current genomic resources for the genus Elsinoë and paves the way for research on comparative genomic studies, E. ampelina–grape interactions, and improvement of management strategies.

By using the precipitation observations (including the encrypted automatic stations) and the ECMWF forecasts for Sichuan during June to August from 2016-2018, based on the probability forecast of short-time heavy rain every 3h derived by the "ingredients method", we calculate the times of various transition probability threshold at each grid, and then a method to improve forecast accuracy of heavy rainfall of 24h cumulative precipitation forecast in Sichuan was developed. We then applied it to daily test of ECMWF model precipitation forecast for 24-72 h on the precipitation concentration period from June to August of 2018. The results show that:1) According to the composite experiment indicators of precipitation above 25 and 50mm, the hit rate, missing rate and TS score of each period validity have been significantly improved after the calibration, and with the extension of the period validity, the value of each index has been further increased greatly. Although the false alarm rate increases a bit of 0-24 h and 24-48 h forecast, the increase of false alarm rate is far less than the decrease of missing rate. 2) According to the experiment of individual cases, the precipitation value increased significantly, the effect of precipitation area forecast above 50mm is greatly improved, which means that the distribution of precipitation area after the calibration is basically consistent with the actual situation, especially for the 0-24h cumulative precipitation forecast.

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education. Premised on a narrative and framework for assessing AI identified from a preliminary analysis, the scope of the study was limited to the application and effects of AI in administration, instruction, and learning. A qualitative research approach, leveraging the use of literature review as a research design and approach was used and effectively facilitated the realization of the study purpose. Artificial intelligence is a field of study and the resulting innovations and developments that have culminated in computers, machines, and other artifacts having human-like intelligence characterized by cognitive abilities, learning, adaptability, and decision-making capabilities. The study ascertained that AI has extensively been adopted and used in education, particularly by education institutions, in different forms. AI initially took the form of computer and computer related technologies, transitioning to web-based and online intelligent education systems, and ultimately with the use of embedded computer systems, together with other technologies, the use of humanoid robots and web-based chatbots to perform instructors' duties and functions independently or with instructors. Using these platforms, instructors have been able to perform different administrative functions, such as reviewing and grading students' assignments more effectively and efficiently, and achieve higher quality in their teaching activities. On the other hand, because the systems leverage machine learning and adaptability, curriculum and content has been customized and personalized in line with students' needs, which has fostered uptake and retention, thereby improving learners experience and overall quality of learning.

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication with caching technology has emerged as a promising technique for offloading the traffic and boosting the throughput of the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. The combined impact of cache memory size of user equipments (UEs) and content sizes, which are two crucial factors in D2D-assisted caching networks, were usually ignored in the existing researches. In this paper, an optimization algorithm is proposed to maximize the cache hit probability and cache-aided throughput, with the consideration of various cache memory sizes of UEs and content sizes. Firstly, users are grouped according to the cache memory sizes and the content sizes. Then the general mathematical expressions for the optimization of cache hit probability and cache-aided throughput with the constraints of cache memory sizes and content sizes are obtained. Subsequently, a Packet Cache Strategy (PCS) algorithm is proposed to obtain the caching probability matrix with the maximum cache hit probability and cache-aided throughout by taking user caching probability of a file as a variable. Finally, numerical results show that the sizes of the requested files affect the caching willingness of users, and the proposed PCS can achieve the highest cache hit probability and the best cache-aided throughput comparing with two other existing methods.

Hotel managers can learn about hotel customer satisfaction by analyzing online reviews. There are differences in the experience of reviewers, the release time and the degree of recognition for different online reviews, which leads to different reliability in reflecting customer satisfaction. The issue of how to determine hotel customer satisfaction more rationally with this reliability in mind is still a problem. To address this problem, this paper proposes a method for measuring hotel customer satisfaction based on the Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory, which considers the reliability of online reviews and information from multiple online travel review websites. This method is composed of three stages. First, considering the difference in online reviews’ reliability, the basic probability assignment is generated based on online reviews. Next, the aggregation of the evaluation information is conducted based on the entropy weight method and Dempster’s rule of combination. Finally, the utility function is used to calculate the expected utility, and customer satisfaction is analyzed based on the calculated expected utility. Therefore, improvement strategies of customer satisfaction can be developed according to customer satisfaction ranking. To verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this method, a case study for four hotels is presented. The proposed method is expected to help hotel managers understand the hotel’s customer satisfaction, and develop corresponding improvement strategies to enhance its competitiveness.

Background: Claudins (CLDNs) are a family of closely related transmembrane proteins that have been linked to oncogenic transformation and metastasis across a range of cancers, suggesting that they may be valuable diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarkers that can be used to evaluate patient outcomes. However, CLDN expression patterns associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) remain to be defined.Methods: The mRNA levels of 21 different CLDN family genes were assessed across 20 tumor types using the Oncomine database. Correlations between these genes and patient clinical outcomes, immune cell infiltration, clinicopathological staging, lymph node metastasis, and mutational status were analyzed using the GEPIA, UALCAN, Human Protein Atlas, Tumor Immune Estimation Resource, STRING, Genenetwork, cBioportal, and DAVID databases in an effort to clarify the potential functional roles of different CLDN protein in CRC. Molecular docking analyses were used to probe potential interactions between CLDN4 and TGFβ1. Levels of CLDN4 and CLDN11 mRNA expression in clinical CRC patient samples and in the HT29 and HCT116 cell lines were assessed via qPCR. CLDN4 expression levels in these 2 cell lines were additionally assessed following TGFβ1 inhibitor treatment.Results: These analyses revealed that COAD and READ tissues exhibited the upregulation of CLDN1, CLDN2, CLDN3, CLDN4, CLDN7, and CLDN12 as well as the downregulation of CLDN5 and CLDN11 relative to control tissues. Higher CLDN11 and CLDN14 expression as well as lower CLDN23 mRNA levels were associated with poorer overall survival (OS) outcomes. Moreover, CLDN2 and CLDN3 or CLDN11 mRNA levels were significantly associated with lymph node metastatic progression in COAD or READ lower in COAD and READ tissues. A positive correlation between the expression of CLDN11 and predicted macrophage, dendritic cell, and CD4+ T cell infiltration was identified in CRC, with CLDN12 expression further being positively correlated with CD4+ T cell infiltration whereas a negative correlation was observed between such infiltration and the expression of CLDN3 and CLDN15. A positive correlation between CLDN1, CLDN16, and neutrophil infiltration was additionally detected, whereas neutrophil levels were negatively correlated with the expression of CLDN3 and CLDN15. Molecular docking suggested that CLDN4 was able to directly bind via hydrogen bond with TGFβ1. Relative to paracancerous tissues, clinical CRC tumor tissue samples exhibited CLDN4 and CLDN11 upregulation and downregulation, respectively. LY364947 was able to suppress the expression of CLDN4 in both the HT29 and HCT116 cell lines.Conclusion: Together, these results suggest that the expression of different CLDN family genes is closely associated with CRC tumor clinicopathological staging and immune cell infiltration. Moreover, CLDN4 expression is closely associated with TGFβ1 in CRC, suggesting that it and other CLDN family members may represent viable targets for antitumor therapeutic intervention.

To analyze pesticide residues, GC coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap MS (GC-Orbitrap-MS) has become a powerful tool because of its unique characteristics of accurate mass full-spectrum acquisition, high resolution, fast acquisition rates, and overcoming matrix interference. This paper presents an efficiency evaluation of GC-Orbitrap-MS for identification and quantitation in the 352 pesticide residues analysis of chrysanthemum flowers in full-scan mode. A streamlined pretreatment approach using one-step extraction and dilution was used, which provided high-throughput processing and excellent recovery. The samples were extracted using acetonitrile. The extracted solution was purified by a Sin-QuEChERS Nano column to suppress the matrix in chrysanthemum flowers and determined by GC-Orbitrap-MS. The calibration curves for the 352 pesticides obtained by GC-Orbitrap-MS were linear in the range of 0.5–200 μg·kg−1, with the correlation coefficients higher than 0.99. The limits of detection (LODs) and the limits of quantification (LOQs) for the 352 pesticide residues were 0.3–3.0 μg·kg−1 and 1.0–10.0 μg·kg−1, respectively. The average recoveries in chrysanthemum flower at three levels were 95.2%, 88.6%, and 95.7%, respectively, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 7.1%, 7.5%, and 7.2%, respectively. Lastly, the validated method and retrospective analysis was applied to a total of 200 chrysanthemum flower samples bought in local pharmacies. The proposed method can simultaneously detect multipesticide residues with a good performance in qualitative and quantitative detection.

Gedan Jiangya decoction (GJD) (aqueous ethanol extract), a traditional Chinese medicine formula which contain six botanical drugs (Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq., Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, Eucommia ulmoides Oliv., Prunella vulgaris L., and Achyranthes bidentata Blume) was designed to treat hypertension; however, the underlying mechanism of action is unclear. This study aimed to determine the mechanisms of action of GJD in the treatment of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Male SHRs were randomly divided into five groups: GJD doses were low (1.36 g/kg/d), medium (2.72 g/kg/d), and high (5.44 g/kg/d), captopril (13.5 mg/kg/d), and SHR groups, with Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) serving as the control. Every rat was gavaged once a day. The ALC-NIBP, a noninvasive blood pressure device, measured systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures. Six weeks following treatment, all rats were anesthetized. The blood samples were obtained from the abdominal aorta and then serum isolated to assess endothelin-1 and angiotensin II, interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, and TNF-alpha. The left ventricular and thoracic aortas were taken for HE staining, immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR, and western blot examination. Following GJD therapy, SBP and DBP were significantly lowered, as were serum levels of endothelin-1 and angiotensin II. The thickness of the left ventricular and thoracic aorta walls reduced, as did type I collagen, type III collagen, and alpha-SMA expression in the left ventricular and aortic tissues. The GJD treatment significantly reduced serum levels of the inflammatory markers interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, and TNF-alpha. Furthermore, interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6, TNF-alpha, TAK1, and NF-κB/p65 levels were significantly reduced in left ventricular and aortic tissues, whereas IkB-alpha levels were significantly elevated. GJD has a dose-dependent effect on all parameters. In conclusion, GJD has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular remodeling, and reduce inflammation via regulating NF-κB in SHRs.

In the mobile crowdsensing task assignment, under the premise that the data platform does not know the user’s perceived quality or cost value, how to establish a suitable user recruitment mechanism is the critical issue that this article needs to solve. It is necessary to learn the user’s perceived quality in the execution p. It also needs to try its best to ensure the efficiency and profit maximization of the mobile group intelligence perception platform. Therefore, this paper proposes a mobile crowdsensing user recruitment algorithm based on Combinatorial Multiarmed Bandit (CMAB) to solve the recruitment problem with known and unknown user costs. Firstly, the user recruitment process is modeled as a combined multiarm bandit model. Each rocker arm represents the selection of different users, and the income obtained represents the user’s perceived quality. Secondly, it proposes the upper confidence bound (UCB) algorithm, which updates the user’s perceptual quality according to the completion of the task. This algorithm sorts the users’ perceived quality values from high to low, then selects the most significant ratio of perceived quality to recruitment costs under the budget condition, assigns tasks, and updates their perceived quality. Finally, this paper introduces the regret value to measure the efficiency of the user recruitment algorithm and conducts many experimental simulations based on real data sets to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the algorithm. The experimental results show that the recruitment algorithm with known user cost is close to the optimal algorithm, and the recruitment algorithm with unknown user cost is more than 75% of the optimal algorithm result, and the gap tends to decrease as the budget cost increases, compared with other comparisons. The algorithm is 25% higher, which proves that the proposed algorithm has good learning ability and can independently select high-quality users to realize task assignments.

This paper proposes a medium access control (MAC) protocol based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL), i.e., multi-channel transmit deep-reinforcement learning multi-channel access (MCT-DLMA) in heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). The work concerns practical unsaturated channel traffic that arrives following a Poisson distribution instead of saturated traffic that arrives before.By learning the access mode from historical information, MCT-DLMA can well fill the spectrum holes in the communication of existing users. In particular, it enables the cognitive user to multi-channel transmit at a time, e.g., via the multi-carrier technology. Thus, the spectrum resource can be fully utilized, and the sum throughput of the HetNet is maximized. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides a much higher throughput than the conventional schemes, i.e., the whittle index policy and the DLMA algorithms for both the saturated and unsaturated traffic, respectively. In addition, it also achieves a near-optimal result in dynamic environments with changing primary users, which proves the enhanced robustness to time-varying communications.

In this paper, we propose a joint polar coding and physical network coding (PNC) for two−user downlink non−orthogonal multiple access (PN−DNOMA) channels, since the successive–interference–cancellation–aided polar decoding cannot be optimal for finite blocklength transmissions. In the proposed scheme, we first constructed the XORed message of two user messages. Then, the XORed message was superimposed with the message of the weak User 2 for broadcast. By doing so, we can utilize the PNC mapping rule and polar decoding to directly recover the message of User 1, while at User 2, we equivalently constructed a long−length polar decoder to obtain its user message. The channel polarization and decoding performance can be greatly improved for both users. Moreover, we optimized the power allocation of the two users with their channel conditions by considering the user fairness and the performance. The simulation results showed that the proposed PN−DNOMA can achieve performance gains of about 0.4−0.7 dB over the conventional schemes in two−user downlink NOMA systems.

Metalenses play an important role in optoelectronic integrated devices, given their advantages in miniaturization and integration. Due to its high aspect ratio subwavelength structure, fabricating metalenses requires a high-level dry etching technology. Consequently, structure deformation of the metalens will exist if the etching process of the material is not mature enough, which will impair the metalens’ performance. In this paper, a polarization-independent InP dielectric metalens is designed to focus the incident light from air into the substrate, which is used for monolithically integrating with the InGaAs/InP photodetector in the future. Subsequently, with the simulation method, we investigated the impact of the structure deformation on the metalens’ performance, which was found in our InP dry etching process development. We have found that the sidewall slope and aspect ratio-dependent etching effect greatly impaired the focusing efficiency because of the phase modulation deviation. To solve this problem, we proposed a manufacturing-tolerant design method, which effectively improved the performance of the device with structural deformation. Our work is instructive for developing metalenses and can accelerate their integration application.

Summary: The sterol regulatory element-binding protein (SREBP) pathway monitors the cellular cholesterol level through sterol-regulated association between the SREBP cleavage-activating protein (Scap) and the insulin-induced gene (Insig). Despite structural determination of the Scap and Insig-2 complex bound to 25-hydroxycholesterol, the luminal domains of Scap remain unresolved. In this study, combining cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) analysis and artificial intelligence-facilitated structural prediction, we report the structure of the human Scap/Insig-2 complex purified in digitonin. The luminal domain loop 1 and a co-folded segment in loop 7 of Scap resemble those of the luminal/extracellular domain in NPC1 and related proteins, providing clues to the cholesterol-regulated interaction of loop 1 and loop 7. An additional luminal interface is observed between Scap and Insig. We also show that Scap(D428A), which inhibits SREBP activation even under sterol depletion, exhibits an identical conformation with the wild-type protein when complexed with Insig-2, and its constitutive suppression of the SREBP pathway may also involve a later step in protein trafficking.

Abstract Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is characterized by alveolar simplification and disordered angiogenesis. Stromal derived factor-1 (SDF-1) is a chemokine which modulates cell migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis. Here we tested the hypothesis that intra-tracheal (IT) administration of a naked plasmid DNA expressing SDF-1 would attenuate neonatal hyperoxia-induced lung injury in an experimental model of BPD, by promoting angiogenesis. Design/methods Newborn Sprague-Dawley rat pups (n = 18–20/group) exposed to room air (RA) or hyperoxia (85% O2) from postnatal day (P) 1 to 14 were randomly assigned to receive IT a naked plasmid expressing SDF-1, JVS-100 (Juventas Therapeutics, Cleveland, Ohio) or placebo (PL) on P3. Lung alveolarization, angiogenesis, inflammation, vascular remodeling and pulmonary hypertension (PH) were assessed on P14. PH was determined by measuring right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) and the weight ratio of the right to left ventricle + septum (RV/LV + S). Capillary tube formation in SDF-1 treated hyperoxia-exposed human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC) was determined by matrigel assay. Data is expressed as mean ± SD and analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Results Exposure of neonatal pups to 14 days of hyperoxia decreased lung SDF-1 gene expression. Moreover, whilst hyperoxia exposure inhibited capillary tube formation in HPMEC, SDF-1 treatment increased tube length and branching in HPMEC. PL-treated hyperoxia-exposed pups had decreased alveolarization and lung vascular density. This was accompanied by an increase in RVSP, RV/LV + S, pulmonary vascular remodeling and inflammation. In contrast, IT JVS-100 improved lung structure, reduced inflammation, PH and vascular remodeling. Conclusions Intratracheal administration of a naked plasmid expressing SDF-1 improves alveolar and vascular structure in an experimental model of BPD. These findings suggest that therapies which modulate lung SDF-1 expression may have beneficial effects in preterm infants with BPD.

Hedgehog (Hh) controls embryonic development via interaction with its receptor Patched (Ptch). Here the authors report the cryo-EM structure of tetrameric Ptch1 in complex with the palmitoylated N-terminal signaling domain of human Sonic hedgehog (ShhNp) at a 4:2 stoichiometric ratio.

This paper investigates the decoding performance of channel-coded ship-based satellite communications on-the-move (SSCOTM) between ships and satellites. In practical communications, ship antennas deviated from satellites by wind waves suffer rapid channel degradation with serious burst errors and even losing all the data. To address this issue, we first establish a mathematical model to study the influence of wind waves and derive the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in SSCOTM. Second, we propose a vertical Reed-Solomon (RS) with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and low-density parity check (VRC-LDPC) code, where the RS code and LDPC code are treated as the inner code and outer code to correct both burst and random errors, respectively. Moreover, both the encoder and the decoder of the proposed VRC-LDPC can be carried out in parallel implementations. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed VRC-LDPC performs much better than the conventional codes of the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) standard. Thus, this paper provides an excellent alternative channel code for reliable error-correction systems of SSCOTM.

The existing physical-layer network coding (PNC) only considers channel codes of a constant coding rate. In this paper, we propose a rate-compatible (RC) channel coding scheme for PNC in two-way relay systems. Our contributions are as follows. First, we propose a two-edge-type-low-density-paritycheck-aided PNC (JTNC) scheme due to its simple implementation and excellent performance. Second, we design an RC scheme, i.e., choice of locations and symbols, for the proposed JTNC in the relay. The simulation results show that the proposed RC-JTNC has good error correction performance and achieves large gains over the existing puncturing algorithms aided PNC over a wide range of rates.

We developed a method using a digital camera combined with fitting algorithm and T-S fuzzy neural network (T-S fnn) to measure the water turbidity accurately and efficiently. A turbidity-measuring device and image-processing software based on the common camera were designed to obtain the image of a standard solution after a constant light source passed through the sample and the RGB values, Lab values corresponding to the image were obtained. These RGB values were used as the input of the fuzzy neural network prediction model, the corresponding standard turbidity values were used as the output, and a camera-based fuzzy neural network turbidity measurement method was established. Simultaneously, the standard curve of turbidity measurement is established by fitting the turbidity using color component and color difference. The proposed method was applied to the measurement of standard turbidity solution and the results were compared with those of turbidmeter. The accuracy of the fuzzy neural network and the fitting algorithm is higher than that of the turbidimeter, and the accuracy of the fuzzy neural network method is the highest, the measurement error was only ±0.89%, and the accuracy much higher than that of an ordinary turbidimeter. By comparing the independent sample t-tests of the actual water samples, the fuzzy neural network method had the same trend as the turbidimeter and there was no significant difference of the results. The water turbidity measurement with the camera-T-S fuzzy neural network assembly can be applied to the actual water samples. This method can replace the traditional photoelectric detection method to measure turbidity, and it can reduce measurement error and cost. It may be used in environmental detection, biomedicine, and other fields.

Thanks to its superior features of non-volatility, fast read/write speed, high endurance, and low power consumption, spin-torque transfer magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) has become a promising candidate for the next generation non-volatile memories (NVMs) and storage class memories (SCMs). However, it has been found that the write errors and read errors caused by thermal fluctuation and process variation severely degrade the reliability of STT-MRAM. Moreover, process imperfection also causes a diversity of the raw bit error rate (BER) among different dies of STT-MRAM. In this paper, we propose the design of novel rate-compatible protograph low-density parity-check (RCP-LDPC) codes to correct memory cell errors and mitigate the raw BER diversity of STT-MRAM. In particular, to deal with the asymmetric property of the STT-MRAM channel, we first apply an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channel adapter to symmetrize the STT-MRAM channel. We then present a modified protograph extrinsic information transfer (P-EXIT) algorithm for the symmetrized STT-MRAM channel. We further propose a combined guideline, including the modified P-EXIT algorithm, the asymptotic weight enumerator (AWE) analysis, as well as the actual error rate performance, for designing protograph LDPC codes with short information word lengths for STT-MRAM. By further applying a code extension approach, we design novel RCP-LDPC codes that can work with a single encoder/decoder. Simulation results show that our proposed RCP-LDPC codes outperform the well-known rate-compatible AR4JA protograph codes as well as the fixed-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes in terms of both the error rate performance and the convergence speed over the STT-MRAM channel.

Background: Dieulafoy's disease of the bronchus is an arterial abnormality characterized by enlarged mucosal arterial branches that are susceptible to lethal bleeding. To date, this disease is rarely reported in the literature. We recently encountered three patients from February 2010 to March 2017, each with such a vascular anomaly in a bronchus with massive hemoptysis. Aim: This paper describes the clinical characteristics and treatments for Dieulafoy's disease. Methods: We report three cases with recurrent massive hemoptysis. Bronchoscopic examination was performed on two patients, one with a non-pulsating polypoid nodule and the other without. One patient had fatal bleeding after biopsy and could not withstand bronchial artery embolization or thoracotomy. Angiography and bronchial artery embolization on another two patients successfully stopped the bleeding. In addition, we retrospectively reviewed the literature on all reported cases with cryptogenic hemoptysis, obtained through PubMed and Chinese journal searches. Results: The intervention with embolization was successful, and no new episodes of acute hemoptysis were observed. Conclusion: Angiography can be used for diagnosis of Dieulafoy's disease of the bronchus, whereas bronchoscopy biopsy should be avoided. Interventions such as embolization or bronchial coagulation play an important role in patients with coughing with massive hemoptysis. Florfenicol is an excellent antibiotic and is widely used in animal bacterial diseases. However, its poor water solubility leads to various problems, such as poor absorption and bioavailability. The development of nanocrystals is one of the most useful methods for solubilizing florfenicol, which often requires solubility data of florfenicol in different mixed solvents. In this work, the solubility of florfenicol was determined by the gravimetric method in methanol + water, ethanol + water, 1-propanol + water, and isopropanol + water binary solvents at temperatures from 278.15 to 318.15 K. In these four mixed solvents, the solubility of florfenicol increased with the increase in temperature. The solubility of florfenicol in methanol + water mixed solvent increases with the decrease in water ratio, while the solubility of florfenicol in ethanol + water, 1-propanol + water, or isopropanol + water mixed solvents increased first and then decreased with the decrease in water ratio, indicating a cosolvency phenomenon. The modified Apelblat model, CNIBS/R-K model, Jouyban–Acree model, and NRTL model were used to correlate the solubility data of florfenicol in four binary solvents. RMSD values indicated that the calculated values are in good agreement with the experimental solubility data for all four models, among which the CNIBS/R-K model provides the best correlation.
