Search

Context. The quantitative study of the physical properties and chemical abundances of large samples of massive blue stars at different metallicities is a powerful tool to understand the nature and evolution of these objects. Their analysis beyond the Milky Way is challenging, nonetheless it is doable and the best way to investigate their behavior in different environments. Fulfilling this task in an objective way requires the implementation of automatic analysis techniques that can perform the analyses systematically, minimizing at the same time any possible bias. Aims. As part of the ARAUCARIA project we carry out the first quantitative spectroscopic analysis of a sample of 12 B-type supergiants in the galaxy NGC 55 at 1.94 Mpc away. By applying the methodology developed in this work, we derive their stellar parameters, chemical abundances and provide a characterization of the present-day metallicity of their host galaxy. Methods. Based on the characteristics of the stellar atmosphere/line formation code fastwind, we designed and created a grid of models for the analysis of massive blue supergiant stars. Along with this new grid, we implemented a spectral analysis algorithm. Both tools were specially developed to perform fully consistent quantitative spectroscopic analyses of low spectral resolution of B-type supergiants in a fast and objective way. Results. We present the main characteristics of our fastwind model grid and perform a number of tests to investigate the reliability of our methodology. The automatic tool is applied afterward to a sample of 12 B-type supergiant stars in NGC 55, deriving the stellar parameters, Si, C, N, O and Mg abundances. The results indicate that our stars are part of a young population evolving towards a red supergiant phase. For half of the sample we find a remarkable agreement between spectroscopic and evolutionary masses, whilst for the rest larger discrepancies are present, but still within the uncertainties. The derived chemical composition hints to an average metallicity similar to the one of the Large Magellanic Cloud, with no indication of a spatial trend across the galaxy. Conclusions. The consistency between the observed spectra and our stellar models supports the reliability of our methodology. This objective and fast approach allows us to deal with large samples in an accurate and more statistical way. We present a new Bayesian approach to constrain the intrinsic parameters (stellar mass and age) of the eclipsing binary system--CEP0227--in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We computed several sets of evolutionary models covering a broad range in chemical compositions and in stellar mass. Independent sets of models were also constructed either by neglecting or by including a moderate convective core overshooting (βov = 0.2) during central hydrogen-burning phases. Sets of models were also constructed either by neglecting or by assuming a canonical (η = 0.4,0.8) or an enhanced (η = 4) mass-loss rate. The most probable solutions were computed in three different planes: luminosity-temperature, mass-radius, and gravity-temperature. By using the Bayes factor, we found that the most probable solutions were obtained in the gravity-temperature plane with a Gaussian mass prior distribution. The evolutionary models constructed by assuming a moderate convective core overshooting (βov = 0.2) and a canonical mass-loss rate (η = 0.4) give stellar masses for the primary (Cepheid)--M = 4.14-0.05+0.04 Mʘ--and for the secondary--M = 4.15-0.05+0.04 Mʘ--that agree at the 1% level with dynamical measurements. Moreover, we found ages for the two components and for the combined system--t = 151-3+4 Myr--that agree at the 5% level. The solutions based on evolutionary models that neglect the mass loss attain similar parameters, while those ones based on models that either account for an enhanced mass loss or neglect convective core overshooting have lower Bayes factors and larger confidence intervals. The dependence on the mass-loss rate might be the consequence of the crude approximation we use to mimic this phenomenon. By using the isochrone of the most probable solution and a Gaussian prior on the LMC distance, we found a true distance modulus--18.53-0.02+0.02 mag--and a reddening value--E(B - V) = 0.142-0.010+0.005 mag--that agree quite well with similar estimates in the literature. We quadruple the number of quasars known behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from 56 (42 in the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)-III LMC fields) to 200 by spectroscopically confirming 169 (144 new) quasars from a sample of 845 observed candidates in four ~3 deg² Anglo-Australian Telescope/AAOmega fields south of the LMC center. The candidates were selected based on their Spitzer mid-infrared colors. X-ray emission, and/or optical variability properties in the database of the OGLE microlensing survey. The contaminating sources can be divided into 115 young stellar objects (YSOs), 17 planetary nebulae (PNe), 39 Be and 24 blue stars, 68 red stars, and 12 objects classed as either YSO/PN or blue star/YSO. There are also 402 targets with either featureless spectra or too low signal-to-noise ratios for source classification. Our quasar sample is 50% (30%) complete at I = 18.6 mag (19.3 mag). The newly discovered active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide many additional reference points for proper motion studies of the LMC, and the sample includes 10 bright AGNs (I < 18 mag) that are potentially suitable for absorption line studies. Their primary use, however, is for detailed studies of quasar variability, as they all have long-term, high cadence, continuously growing light curves from the microlensing surveys of the LMC. Completing the existing Magellanic Quasars Survey fields in the LMC and Small Magellanic Cloud should yield a sample of ~700 well-monitored AGNs, and expanding it to the larger regions covered by the OGLE-IV survey should yield a sample of ~3600 AGNs. ABSTRACT We report the discovery of a period doubling behaviour in a 2.4-d BL Herculis type variable of the Galactic bulge. Another bulge BL Her type star ( P = 2.25 d) is a strong period doubling candidate. Both objects have been identified with the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) photometry. Possibility of period doubling in this type of pulsators has been predicted almost 20 yr ago by Buchler & Moskalik. Our finding is the first observational confirmation of their theoretical results. Discovery of the first BL Herculis star showing the period doubling effect motivates a new theoretical investigation with the state-of-the-art convective pulsation codes. We present the results of initial model survey, specifically aimed at studying the observed period-doubled BL Her variable. All of our non-linear models have P = 2.4 d. The computations confirm that the period doubling effect is caused by the 3:2 resonance between the fundamental mode and the first overtone, as indicated by earlier radiative models of Buchler & Moskalik. Comparison of the computed and the observed light curves allows us to constrain the parameters of the star, in particular its metallicity, which appears to be high, Z ≈ 0.01. ABSTRACT In this fourth part of the series presenting the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) microlensing studies of the dark matter halo compact objects (MACHOs), we describe results of the OGLE-III monitoring of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Three sound candidates for microlensing events were found and yielded the optical depth τSMC-OIII= 1.30 ± 1.01 × 10−7, consistent with the expected contribution from Galactic disc and SMC self-lensing. We report that event OGLE-SMC-03 is most likely a thick-disc lens candidate, the first of such type found towards the SMC. In this paper we also combined all OGLE Large Magellanic Cloud and SMC microlensing results in order to refine the conclusions on MACHOs. All but one of the OGLE events are most likely caused by the lensing by known populations of stars; therefore, we concluded that there is no need for introducing any special dark matter compact objects in order to explain the observed event rates. Potential black hole event indicates that similar lenses can contribute only about 2 per cent to the total mass of the halo, which is still in agreement with the expected number of such objects. We report the result of the analysis of the light curve of a caustic-crossing binary-lens microlensing event OGLE-2009-BLG-023/MOA-2009-BLG-028. Even though the event was observed solely by survey experiments, we could uniquely determine the mass of the lens and distance to it by simultaneously measuring the Einstein radius and lens parallax. From this, we find that the lens system is composed of M-type dwarfs with masses and located in the Galactic disc with a distance of toward the Galactic bulge direction. The event demonstrates that physical lens parameters of binary-lens events can be routinely determined from future high-cadence lensing surveys and thus microlensing can provide a new way to study Galactic binaries. ABSTRACT In the third part of the series presenting the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) microlensing studies of the dark matter halo compact objects (MACHOs), we describe results of the OGLE-III monitoring of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This unprecedented data set contains almost continuous photometric coverage over 8 years of about 35 million objects spread over 40 deg2. We report a detection of two candidate microlensing events found with the automated pipeline and an additional two, less probable, candidate events found manually. The optical depth derived for the two main candidates was calculated following a detailed blending examination and detection efficiency determination and was found to be τ= (0.16 ± 0.12) × 10−7. If the microlensing signal we observe originates from MACHOs, then it means their masses are around 0.2 M⊙ and they comprise only f= 3 ± 2 per cent of the mass of the Galactic halo. However, the more likely explanation of our detections does not involve dark matter compact objects at all and relies on the natural effect of self-lensing of LMC stars by LMC lenses. In such a scenario, we can almost completely rule out MACHOs in the subsolar mass range with an upper limit at f < 7 per cent reaching its minimum of f < 4 per cent at M= 0.1 M⊙. For masses around M= 10 M⊙, the constraints on the MACHOs are more lenient with f∼ 20 per cent. Owing to limitations of the survey, there is no reasonable limit found for heavier masses, leaving only a tiny window of mass spectrum still available for dark matter compact objects. The primary goal of this paper is to provide evidence that can prove true or false the hypothesis that dark matter in the Galactic halo can clump into stellar-mass compact objects. If such objects exist, they would act as lenses to external sources in the Magellanic Clouds, giving rise to an observable effect of microlensing. We present the results of our search for such events, based on data from the second phase of the OGLE survey (1996–2000) towards the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data set we used comprises 2.1 million monitored sources distributed over an area of 2.4 deg2. We found only one microlensing event candidate, however its poor-quality light curve limited our discussion of the exact distance to the lensing object. Given a single event, taking blending (crowding of stars) into account for the detection-efficiency simulations and deriving the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST)-corrected number of monitored stars, the microlensing optical depth is . This result is consistent with the expected SMC self-lensing signal, with no need to introduce dark matter microlenses. Rejecting the unconvincing event leads to an upper limit on the fraction of dark matter in the form of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) of per cent for deflector masses around 0.4 and per cent for masses between 0.003 and 0.2 (95 per cent confidence limit). We present the results from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) survey (1996–2000) towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which has the aim of detecting the microlensing phenomena caused by dark matter compact objects in the Galactic halo [massive compact halo objects (MACHOs)]. We use high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope images of the OGLE fields and derive the correction for the number of monitored stars in each field. This also yields blending distributions which we use in ‘catalogue-level’ Monte Carlo simulations of the microlensing events in order to calculate the detection efficiency of the events. We detect two candidates for microlensing events in the All Stars Sample, which translates into an optical depth of . If both events were due to MACHO, the fraction of mass of compact dark matter objects in the Galactic halo would be per cent. This optical depth, however, along with the characteristics of the events seems to be consistent with the self-lensing scenario, i.e. self-lensing alone is sufficient to explain the observed microlensing signal. Our results indicate the non-detection of MACHOs lensing towards the LMC with an upper limit on their abundance in the Galactic halo of 19 per cent for and 10 per cent for masses between 0.01 and . We investigate the nature of OGLE 05155332−6925581, one of the brightest members of the enigmatic group of double periodic variables (DPVs) recently found in the Magellanic Clouds. The modelling of archival orbital light curves (LCs), along with the analysis of the radial velocities (RVs) suggest that this object is a semidetached binary with the less massive star transferring matter to the more massive and less evolved star, in an Algol-like configuration. We find evidence for additional orbital variability and Hα emission, likely caused by an accretion disc around the primary star. As in the case of β Lyr the circumprimary disc seems to be more luminous than the primary, but we do not detect orbital period changes. We find that the LC follows a loop in the colour–magnitude diagram during the long cycle; the system is redder when brighter and the rising phase is bluer than during decline. Infrared excess is also present. The source of the long-term periodicity is not eclipsed, indicating its circumbinary origin. Strong asymmetries, discrete absorption components (DACs) and a γ shift are new and essential observational properties in the infrared H i lines. The DACs strength and RV follow a saw-teeth pattern during the orbital cycle. We suggest that the system experiences supercycles of mass outflow feeding a circumbinary disc. Mass exchange and mass loss could produce comparable but opposite effects in the orbital period on a long time-scale, resulting in a quasi-constancy of this parameter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Searches for extrasolar planets have uncovered an astonishing diversity of planetary systems, yet the frequency of solar system analogs remains unknown. The gravitational microlensing planet search method is potentially sensitive to multiple-planet systems containing analogs of all the solar system planets except Mercury. We report the detection of a multiple-planet system with microlensing. We identify two planets with masses of 0.71 and 0.27 times the mass of Jupiter and orbital separations of 2.3 and 4.6 astronomical units orbiting a primary star of mass 0.50 solar mass at a distance of 1.5 kiloparsecs. This system resembles a scaled version of our solar system in that the mass ratio, separation ratio, and equilibrium temperatures of the planets are similar to those of Jupiter and Saturn. These planets could not have been detected with other techniques; their discovery from only six confirmed microlensing planet detections suggests that solar system analogs may be common. Based on the analysis of high-resolution spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio, we have determined the abundances of the α-elements O, Si, Ca and Ti, the iron peak elements V, Fe and Ni, and the heavy element Ba without the consideration of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effect and the light neutron-rich elements Na, Mg and Al with an NLTE analysis for 63 nearby red clump giants. Fe abundances cover a logarithmic range between −0.60 and +0.35 relative to solar. All abundance ratios with respect to Fe are similar to those found in the Sun. Hyperfine structure (HFS) was taken into account when calculating V lines. The difference in abundances obtained with and without HFS can be as large as 0.5 dex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first spectroscopic data for a sample of the recently discovered blue double-periodic variables in the Magellanic Clouds. The optical spectrum of these objects is dominated by Balmer and helium absorption lines and a continuum with a blue or sometimes flat slope. Spectral classification yields B spectral types and luminosity classes mostly of type III. However, the Hβ absorption line is weaker than expected for the spectral classification in most objects. For two objects, OGLE 05060009-6855025 and OGLE 05195898-6917013 we obtained time-resolved spectroscopy, finding radial velocity variations consistent with binarity. Phasing the short-term photometric variability of these two systems with their spectroscopic ephemeris, we find that they can be interpreted as ellipsoidal variations of the brighter component in a close binary system. From the analysis of their short-term light curves and radial velocities, we estimate that the cooler component could be a B-type dwarf. Our findings support the hypothesis that double-periodic variables are close binary systems consisting of two B-type stars. The shorter periodicity in non-eclipsing systems should be the ellipsoidal variation of the more evolved component. Regarding the long-term periodicity, we find their origin in or around the brighter star, as the oscillations virtually disappear at primary eclipse. Their nature remains unknown, at the present time. We also report the discovery of three (two of them eclipsing) new double-periodic variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud. One of them shows a shortening of the long-term period by approximately 20 per cent in a couple of cycles, which coincides with an increase of the maximum oscillation brightness. We present 97 QSO candidates in 48 Galactic bulge fields of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) covering∼11 deg2, which are selected via their variability. We extend light curves of variable objects which were detected in a 3-yr baseline in the OGLE-II variable star catalogue to fourth year. We search for objects that are faintand slowly variable over 4 yr in this catalogue by using the variogram/structure function. Finding the QSOs in such stellar-crowded and high extinction fields is challenging, but should be useful for the astrometric reference frame. Spectroscopic follow-up observations are required to confirm these QSO candidates. Follow-up observations are being prepared for four of these fields (BUL_SC1, 2, 32 and 45). We present a proper-motion (μ) catalogue of 5 080 236 stars in 49 Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) Galactic bulge (GB) fields, covering a range of and , the total area close to 11 deg2. The proper-motion measurements are based on 138–555 I-band images taken during four observing seasons: 1997–2000. The catalogue stars are in the magnitude range . In particular, the catalogue includes red clump giants and red giants in the GB, and main-sequence stars in the Galactic disc. The proper motions up to were measured with a mean accuracy of 0.8–3.5 mas yr−1, depending on the brightness of a star. We present the discovery of a plausible disc-eclipse system OGLE-BLG182.1.162852. The OGLE light curve for OGLE-BLG182.1.162852 shows three episodes of dimming by I ≃ 2–3 mag, separated by 1277 d. The shape of the light curve during dimming events is very similar to that of known disc-eclipse system OGLE-LMC-ECL-11893. The event is presently undergoing a dimming event, predicted to end on 2014 December 30. The next dimming episode for OGLE-BLG182.1.162852 is expected to occur in 2018 March. We combine Spitzer and ground-based observations to measure the microlens parallax vector , and thus the mass and distance of OGLE-2014-BLG-0124L, making it the first microlensing planetary system with a space-based parallax measurement. The planet and star have masses of m ∼ 0.5 Mjup and M ∼ 0.7 M☼ and are separated by a⊥ ∼ 3.1 AU in projection. The main source of uncertainty in all of these numbers (approximately 30%, 30%, and 20%) is the relatively poor measurement of the Einstein radius θE, rather than uncertainty in πE, which is measured with 2.5% precision. This compares to 22% based on OGLE data alone, implying that the Spitzer data provide not only a substantial improvement in the precision of the πE measurement, but also the first independent test of a ground-based measurement. We report the discovery of a young stellar bridge that forms a continuous connection between the Magellanic Clouds. This finding is based on number density maps for stellar populations found in data gathered by OGLE-IV that fully cover over 270 deg2 of the sky in the Magellanic Bridge area. This is the most extensive optical survey of this region to date. We find that the young population is present mainly in the western half of the MBR, which, together with the newly discovered young population in the eastern Bridge, form a continuous stream of stars connecting both galaxies along δ ∼ –73.5 deg. The young population distribution is clumped, with one of the major densities close to the SMC and the other fairly isolated and located approximately mid-way between the Clouds, which we call the OGLE island. These overdensities are well matched by H I surface density contours, although the newly found young population in the eastern Bridge is offset by ∼2 deg north from the highest H I density contour. We observe a continuity of red clump stars between the Magellanic Clouds which represent an intermediate-age population. Red clump stars are present mainly in the southern and central parts of the Magellanic Bridge, below its gaseous part, and their presence is reflected by a strong deviation from the radial density profiles of the two galaxies. This may indicate either a tidal stream of stars, or that the stellar halos of the two galaxies overlap. On the other hand, we do not observe such an overlap within an intermediate-age population represented by the top of the red giant branch and the asymptotic giant branch stars. Brown dwarfs are important objects because they may provide a missing link between stars and planets, two populations that have dramatically different formation histories. In this paper, we present the candidate binaries with brown dwarf companions that are found by analyzing binary microlensing events discovered during the 2004-2011 observation seasons. Based on the low mass ratio criterion of q < 0.2, we found seven candidate events: OGLE-2004-BLG-035, OGLE-2004-BLG-039, OGLE-2007-BLG-006, OGLE-2007-BLG-399/MOA-2007-BLG-334, MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172, MOA-2011-BLG-149, and MOA-201-BLG-278/OGLE-2011-BLG-012N. Among them, we are able to confirm that the companions of the lenses of MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149 are brown dwarfs by determining the mass of the lens based on the simultaneous measurement of the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured masses of the brown dwarf companions are 0.02 ± 0.01 M☼ and 0.019 ± 0.002 M☼ for MOA-2011-BLG-104/OGLE-2011-BLG-0172 and MOA-2011-BLG-149, respectively, and both companions are orbiting low-mass M dwarf host stars. High-magnification microlensing events provide an important channel to detect planets. Perturbations near the peak of a high-magnification event can be produced either by a planet or a binary companion. It is known that central perturbations induced by both types of companions can be generally distinguished due to the essentially different magnification pattern around caustics. In this paper, we present a case of central perturbations for which it is difficult to distinguish the planetary and binary interpretations. The peak of a lensing light curve affected by this perturbation appears to be blunt and flat. For a planetary case, this perturbation occurs when the source trajectory passes the negative perturbation region behind the back end of an arrowhead-shaped central caustic. For a binary case, a similar perturbation occurs for a source trajectory passing through the negative perturbation region between two cusps of an astroid-shaped caustic. We demonstrate the degeneracy for two high-magnification events of OGLE-2011-BLG-0526 and OGLE-2011-BLG-0950/MOA-2011-BLG-336. For OGLE-2011-BLG-0526, the χ2 difference between the planetary and binary model is ∼3, implying that the degeneracy is very severe. For OGLE-2011-BLG-0950/MOA-2011-BLG-336, the stellar binary model is formally excluded with Δχ2 ∼ 105 and the planetary model is preferred. However, it is difficult to claim a planet discovery because systematic residuals of data from the planetary model are larger than the difference between the planetary and binary models. Considering that two events observed during a single season suffer from such a degeneracy, it is expected that central perturbations experiencing this type of degeneracy is common. Despite the astrophysical importance of binary star systems, detections are limited to those located in small ranges of separations, distances, and masses and thus it is necessary to use a variety of observational techniques for a complete view of stellar multiplicity across a broad range of physical parameters. In this paper, we report the detections and measurements of two binaries discovered from observations of microlensing events MOA-2011-BLG-090 and OGLE-2011-BLG-0417. Determinations of the binary masses are possible by simultaneously measuring the Einstein radius and the lens parallax. The measured masses of the binary components are 0.43 M☼ and 0.39 M☼ for MOA-2011-BLG-090 and 0.57 M☼ and 0.17 M☼ for OGLE-2011-BLG-0417 and thus both lens components of MOA-2011-BLG-090 and one component of OGLE-2011-BLG-0417 are M dwarfs, demonstrating the usefulness of microlensing in detecting binaries composed of low-mass components. From modeling of the light curves considering full Keplerian motion of the lens, we also measure the orbital parameters of the binaries. The blended light of OGLE-2011-BLG-0417 comes very likely from the lens itself, making it possible to check the microlensing orbital solution by follow-up radial-velocity observation. For both events, the caustic-crossing parts of the light curves, which are critical for determining the physical lens parameters, were resolved by high-cadence survey observations and thus it is expected that the number of microlensing binaries with measured physical parameters will increase in the future. We report the extremely high-magnification (A > 1000) binary microlensing event OGLE-2007-BLG-514. We obtained good coverage around the double peak structure in the light curve via follow-up observations from different observatories. The binary lens model that includes the effects of parallax (known orbital motion of the Earth) and orbital motion of the lens yields a binary lens mass ratio of q = 0.321 ± 0.007 and a projected separation of s = 0.072 ± 0.001 in units of the Einstein radius. The parallax parameters allow us to determine the lens distance DL = 3.11 ± 0.39 kpc and total mass ML = 1.40 ± 0.18 M☼; this leads to the primary and secondary components having masses of M1 = 1.06 ± 0.13 M☼ and M2 = 0.34 ± 0.04 M☼, respectively. The parallax model indicates that the binary lens system is likely constructed by the main-sequence stars. On the other hand, we used a Bayesian analysis to estimate probability distributions by the model that includes the effects of xallarap (possible orbital motion of the source around a companion) and parallax (q = 0.270 ± 0.005, s = 0.083 ± 0.001). The primary component of the binary lens is relatively massive, with M1 = 0.9+4.6–0.3M☼ and it is at a distance of DL = 2.6+3.8–0.9 kpc. Given the secure mass ratio measurement, the companion mass is therefore M2 = 0.2+1.2–0.1M☼. The xallarap model implies that the primary lens is likely a stellar remnant, such as a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
