Abstract

This study examines the correlation between personal remittances, financial development, urbanization, and renewable energy utilization in Southeast Asian countries for the period 1991-2020. The study employs both linear and nonlinear analyses to examine the symmetric and asymmetric effects of these variables on renewable energy consumption. The results offer a plethora of significant insights. To commence, it is noteworthy that there exists an adverse correlation between financial deepening and the utilization of renewable energy, thereby challenging the prevailing notion that these two factors are positively interconnected. This demonstrates that the increasing financial growth in South Asian countries could potentially have adverse effects on the environment and hinder the implementation of renewable energy solutions. Furthermore, previous studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between urbanization and the utilization of renewable energy sources. The utilization of renewable energy technology is encouraged in cities due to factors such as population density, resource availability, and supportive legislation. Thirdly, personal remittances exhibit a varied impact, yielding favorable long-term consequences in Bangladesh and Pakistan, while conversely resulting in negative long-term effects in India and Sri Lanka. The findings indicate the necessity for governmental interventions aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of remittances, while simultaneously optimizing their positive influence on the utilization of renewable energy. Trade openness is positively correlated with long-term utilization of renewable energy, suggesting the potential for international trade in renewable energy resources. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that there is a negative correlation between trade liberalization and the utilization of renewable energy in the short term. This highlights the importance of implementing additional policy measures to address this issue. This study contributes to our comprehension of the intricate connections among personal remittances, financial deepening, urbanization, and energy consumption in Southeast Asian nations. It offers valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners involved in advancing sustainable energy transitions and environmental sustainability.

Abstract

How impulsive magnetic energy release leads to solar eruptions and how those eruptions are energized and evolve are vital unsolved problems in Heliophysics. The standard model for solar eruptions summarizes our current understanding of these events. Magnetic energy in the corona is released through drastic restructuring of the magnetic field via reconnection. Electrons and ions are then accelerated by poorly understood processes. Theories include contracting loops, merging magnetic islands, stochastic acceleration, and turbulence at shocks, among others. Although this basic model is well established, the fundamental physics is poorly understood. HXR observations using grazing-incidence focusing optics can now probe all of the key regions of the standard model. These include two above-the-looptop (ALT) sources which bookend the reconnection region and are likely the sites of particle acceleration and direct heating. The science achievable by a direct HXR imaging instrument can be summarized by the following science questions and objectives which are some of the most outstanding issues in solar physics (1) How are particles accelerated at the Sun? (1a) Where are electrons accelerated and on what time scales? (1b) What fraction of electrons is accelerated out of the ambient medium? (2) How does magnetic energy release on the Sun lead to flares and eruptions? A Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI) instrument, which can be built now using proven technology and at modest cost, would enable revolutionary advancements in our understanding of impulsive magnetic energy release and particle acceleration, a process which is known to occur at the Sun but also throughout the Universe.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, and no current therapy is ideal for control of this condition. Experimental studies suggest that angiotensin II-receptor blockers (ARBs) can influence atrial remodeling, and some clinical studies suggest that they may prevent atrial fibrillation. METHODS: We conducted a large, randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial to test whether the ARB valsartan could reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation. We enrolled patients who were in sinus rhythm but had had either two or more documented episodes of atrial fibrillation in the previous 6 months or successful cardioversion for atrial fibrillation in the previous 2 weeks. To be eligible, patients also had to have underlying cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or left atrial enlargement. Patients were randomly assigned to receive valsartan or placebo. The two primary end points were the time to a first recurrence of atrial fibrillation and the proportion of patients who had more than one recurrence of atrial fibrillation over the course of 1 year. RESULTS: A total of 1442 patients were enrolled in the study. Atrial fibrillation recurred in 371 of the 722 patients (51.4%) in the valsartan group, as compared with 375 of 720 (52.1%) in the placebo group (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.97; 96% confidence interval [CI], 0.83 to 1.14; P = 0.73). More than one episode of atrial fibrillation occurred in 194 of 722 patients (26.9%) in the valsartan group and in 201 of 720 (27.9%) in the placebo group (adjusted odds ratio, 0.89; 99% CI, 0.64 to 1.23; P = 0.34). The results were similar in all predefined subgroups of patients, including those who were not receiving angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors. Abstract

Electrocorticography (ECoG) is a neurophysiological modality that measures the distribution of electrical potentials, associated with either spontaneous or evoked neural activity, by means of electrodes grids implanted close to the cortical surface. A full interpretation of ECoG data, however, requires solving the ill-posed inverse problem of reconstructing the spatio-temporal distribution of neural currents responsible for the recorded signals. Only in the last few years some methods have been proposed to solve this inverse problem [1]. This study addresses the ECoG source modelling using a beamformer method. First, we compute the lead-field matrix which maps the neural currents onto the sensors space: a novel routine for the computation of the lead-field matrix, based on the tools provided by the OpenMEEG framework, was used [2]. The ECoG source-modeling problem requires to invert this matrix by means of a regularization method which reduces its intrinsic numerical instability; thus, we perform an analysis of the condition number of the lead-field matrix which provides quantitative information on the numerical instability of the problem, independently of the kind of inversion algorithm applied. Finally, we provide quantitative results for source modeling using a Linear Constraint Minimum Variance (LCMV) beamformer. The validation of the effectiveness of beamforming in ECoG is performed both with synthetic data and with experimental data recorded during a rapid visual categorization task.

Abstract

The structural evidence, obtained by synchrotron radiation single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, of the presence of preferential substitution sites for iron heteroatoms hosted in the MFI framework of a Na-Fe-silicalite sample is presented. Independent data obtained on single crystals of Fe-silicalite samples synthesized with NH(sub 4)+ and K+ counterions and those obtained on the sodium derivative are found to correlate.

Abstract

Over the past decade, tourism’s contribution to economic Section progress has emerged as an alternative avenue for socio-economic development, especially in the productive economy with natural beauty. On the other hand, the potential effects of tourism on the environment have also been unveiled in the literature, along with macroeconomic misbehavior due to erratic environmental changes. However, the study’s impetus is to inspect the reaction of tourism contribution to Bangladesh’s economy from 1991–2019 with ecological sustainability, good governance, and financial inclusion in the empirical assessment. With the implementation of both linear and non-linear frameworks, the present study has explored the elasticities of core explanatory variables on explained variables; for directional causality, the novel Fourier Toda and Yamamoto causality test has been executed. According to the combined cointegration test, Bangladesh has a long-run association between environmental sustainability, good governance, financial inclusion, and tourism development. Inferring from long-run symmetric and asymmetric cointegration, the test statistics revealed statistically significant at a 1% level, suggesting the long-run relations in the established empirical model. Considering the linear autoregressive disoriented lagged, the study established a negative and statistically significant linkage between environmental sustainably and tourism contribution, suggesting that the excessive inflows of carbon emission that environmental degradation dwindles the progress of tourism contribution. Whereas a positive and statistically significant influence runs from good governance and financial inclusion to tourism development, the suggestion of easy access to financial services and effective institutional activities prompts tourism activities, especially in the long-run. The asymmetric investigation established non-linearity in the empirical model for the long and short-run. In terms of asymmetric coefficients, the study unveiled the positive and negative shocks of environmental sustainability exposed negatively and statistically significant. In contrast, the asymmetric shocks of financial inclusion and good governance established positive and statistically substantial Bangladesh tourism development in the long and short-run. The directional causality assessment revealed bidirectional causality running between explanatory variables to tourism development.

Abstract

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of ZrO2 based, carbon-supported nanoparticles is not conclusively reported in literature. This study examines the dependence of the ORR activity on the used precursors as well as on the heat-treatment atmosphere and temperature. We further determine the ORR activation energy and the ORR mechanism. Various precursors containing Zr and/or N were employed in the synthesis, and the ORR activity was measured by rotating (ring) disk electrode (R(R)DE) voltammetry in both acidic and alkaline electrolyte as well as by measurements in a single-cell polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) configuration. We show that even the most active ZrO2 based ORR catalysts exhibit an activity gap of ca. two orders of magnitude compared to the DOE target of 300 A/cm³ for PGM-free ORR catalysts, thus requiring further development. Our RRDE analysis suggests a primarily 2-electron ORR mechanism in the case of the tested catalysts in acid, which in turn provides a consistent temperature dependence between RDE and PEMFC experiments, allowing also for a mechanistic (re-) interpretation of experimental results in the literature.
