In the mid-nineteenth century, an abrupt transformation occurred in textiles and other art forms of northeastern Woodlands Indians. Trade, tourism, and survival needs sparked changes in materials used and garment types produced, as well as substitution of a new vocabulary of floral imagery for "pagan" iconographic traditions. Very little information is currently available regarding the sites of integration of transgenes in genetically engineered fish. We examined the chromosomal location of growth hormone gene constructs containing GH1 in three different strains of transgenic coho salmon produced by microinjection into pronuclei of fertilized eggs. The constructs were labeled and used as probes in fluorescence in situ hybridization experiments on chromosome preparations from the M77, MT5750A, and H3D0474 strains of transgenic coho salmon. The constructs were localized at 1-3 different sites in different strains. In the M77 strain the construct was found at a single centromeric site on a medium-sized metacentric chromosome, while in the MT5750A strain, the construct was found at a single telomeric site on the short arm of chromosome pair 21, a subtelocentric chromosome with a large band of repetitive DNA on the short arm. In the H3D0474 strain, the construct was found at telomeric sites on the long arms of three metacentric chromosomes that appear to represent one pair of homologous chromosomes and one chromosome containing the homeologous long arm (recently duplicated chromosome arm) corresponding to the long arm of the first pair. This suggests transfer of the construct may have occurred by homologous and homeologous crossing over. All of the constructs incorporated at restricted sites characterized by the presence of tandem DNA repeats. Key words: transgene, growth hormone, coho salmon, centromere, telomere, FISH. Les auteurs ont examine la position chromosomique de constructions portant le gene GH1 codant pour l'hormone de croissance chez trois ligneees transgeeniques du saumon coho produites par micro-injection dans les pronoyaux d'oeufs fecondes. Les constructions ont ete marquees et employees comme sondes lors d'hybridations in situ en fluorescence sur des preparations chromosomiques des ligneees transgeniques de saumon coho M77, MT5750A et H3D0474. La construction etait presente a 1-3 sites differents chez les diverses lignees. Chez la lignee M77, la construction etait presente a un seul site centromerique sur un chromosome metacentrique de taille moyenne, tandis que chez la lignee MT5750A la construction a ete trouvee a un seul site telomerique sur le bras court d'une paire de chromosomes 21, un chromosome subtelomeerique ayant une grande region d'ADN repetitif sur le bras court. Chez la lignee H3D0474, la construction a ete; observee a des sites telomeriques sur les bras longs de trois chromosomes metacentriques qui semblent representer une paire de chromosomes homologues ainsi qu'un chromosome portant un long bras homeologue (un bras chromosomique recemment duplique) correspondant au bras long de la premiere paire. Ceci suggere que le transfert de la construction aurait pu se produire par recombinaison homologue et homeologue. The rainbow trout genetic linkage groups have been assigned to specific chromosomes in the OSU (2N= 60) strain using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with BAC probes containing genes mapped to each linkage group. There was a rough correlation between chromosome size and size of the genetic linkage map in centimorgans for the genetic maps based on recombination from the female parent. Chromosome size and structure have a major impact on the female:male recombination ratio, which is much higher (up to 10:1 near the centromeres) on the larger metacentric chromosomes compared to smaller acrocentric chromosomes. Eighty percent of the BAC clones containing duplicate genes mapped to a single chromosomal location, suggesting that diploidization resulted in substantial divergence of intergenic regions. The BAC clones that hybridized to both duplicate loci were usually located in the distal portion of the chromosome. Duplicate genes were almost always found at a similar location on the chromosome arm of two different chromosome pairs, suggesting that most of the chromosome rearrangements following tetraploidization were centric fusions and did not involve homeologous chromosomes. The set of BACs compiled for this research will be especially useful in construction of genome maps and identification of QTL for important traits in other sahnonid fishes.

The National Museum of the American Indian's (NMAI) new exhibits is compared with the First Peoples Hall opened at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) in 2003 due to their similarities and their differences. Their shared features evidence the transnational impact of postcolonial critiques of the museum, while their differences suggest the ways in which such critiques are mediated by local forms of historical consciousness, national museum traditions, and specific kinds of identity politics.

This article seeks to step back from the long-standing debate between art and artifact—aesthetics and science-- understood as terms that reference central concerns of the quintessentially modern Western disciplines of art history and anthropology. In their landmark edited volume The Traffic in Culture: Refiguring Art and Anthropology, George Marcus and Fred Myers explored the growing convergences exhibited by the concerns and methods of practitioners of the two disciplines, both in the academy and the museum. By training our attention on contemporary artworlds—understood as systems—they illuminated the exchanges of aesthetic and conceptual ideas and forms that have brought Western and non-Western arts into shared discursive and real spaces. Yet in the quarter century since the book's publication there has been a noticeable retreat from attempts by the proponents of visual studies and an expanded visual anthropology to actualize disciplinary convergences. The boundaries that separate art and anthropology have not been dissolved. Art historians and anthropologists continue to ask different questions and to support different regimes of value. From the author's vantage point in a settler society currently directing considerable energies to institutional projects of decolonization the old debates have rapidly been receding as a new 'third term' – Indigenous Studies-- intrudes itself on the well trodden terrain. Not (yet) definable as a discipline but, rather, maintaining itself as an orientation, Indigenous Studies nevertheless renders the earlier disciplinary debates moot. Place, rather than time-based, collective rather than individual, holistic rather than either disciplinary or interdisciplinary, Indigenous Studies formulations exert decolonizing pressures on institutions that are rapidly mounting. Using Anishinaabeg: Art and Power, a show in 2017 at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), as a case study, this article shows how an exhibition moved representation away from the art/artifact dichotomy as well as from contested strategies of 'inclusion' and pro forma recognitions of 'Indigenous ontology' toward a genuine paradigm shift.
