In this work, we investigate the dynamics of vortex-induced vibration of an elastically mounted cylinder with very low values of mass and damping. We use two methods to investigate this canonical problem: first we calculate the instantaneous phase between the cylinder motion and the fluid forcing; second we decompose the total hydrodynamic force into drag and lift components that act along and normal to, respectively, the instantaneous effective angle of attack. We focus on the phase dynamics in the large-amplitude-response range, consisting of the initial, upper and lower branches of response. The instantaneous phase between the transverse force and displacement shows repeated phase slips separating periods of constant, or continuous-drifting, phase in the second half of the upper branch. The phase between the lift component and displacement shows strong phase locking throughout the large-amplitude range - the average phase varies linearly with the primary frequency - however the modulation of this phase is largest in the second half of the upper branch. These observations suggest that the large-amplitude-response dynamics is driven by two distinct limit cycles - one that is stable over a very small range of reduced velocity at the beginning of the upper branch, and another that consists of the lower branch. The chaotic oscillation between them - the majority of the upper branch - occurs when neither limit cycle is stable. The transition between the upper and lower branches is marked by intermittent switching with epochs of time where different states exist at a constant reduced velocity. Josephson junctions with weak-links of exotic materials allow the elucidation of the Josephson effect in previously unexplored regimes. Further, such devices offer a direct probe of novel material properties, for example in the search for Majorana fermions. In this work, we report on DC and AC Josephson effect of high-mobility, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) encapsulated graphene Josephson junctions. On the application of RF radiation, we measure phase-locked Shapiro steps. An unexpected bistability between $\pm 1$ steps is observed with switching times on the order of seconds. A critical scaling of a bistable state is measured directly from the switching time, allowing for direct comparison to numerical simulations. We show such intermittent chaotic behavior is a consequence of the nonlinear dynamics of the junction and has a sensitive dependence on the current-phase relation. This work draws connections between nonlinear phenomena in dynamical systems and their implications for ongoing condensed matter experiments exploring topology and exotic physics.

This article presents the phase dynamics of an inline long Josephson junction in voltage state under the influence of constant external magnetic field. Fractional calculus approach is used to model the evolution of the phase difference between the macroscopic wave functions of the two superconductors across the junction. The governing non-linear partial differential equation is then solved using finite difference-finite element schemes. Other quantities of interest like Josephson current density and voltage across the junction are also computed. The effects of various parameters in the model on phase difference, Josephson current density and voltage are analyzed graphically with the help of numerical simulations.

Upon excitation with an intense ultrafast laser pulse, a symmetry-broken ground state can undergo a non-equilibrium phase transition through pathways dissimilar from those in thermal equilibrium. Determining the mechanism underlying these photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) has been a long-standing issue in the study of condensed matter systems. To this end, we investigate the light-induced melting of a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) material, LaTe$_3$. Using a suite of time-resolved probes, we independently track the amplitude and phase dynamics of the CDW. We find that a quick ($\sim\,$1$\,$ps) recovery of the CDW amplitude is followed by a slower reestablishment of phase coherence. This longer timescale is dictated by the presence of topological defects: long-range order (LRO) is inhibited and is only restored when the defects annihilate. Our results provide a framework for understanding other PIPTs by identifying the generation of defects as a governing mechanism.

A theoretical formalism is developed to simultaneously solve equation of motion of the magnetizations in two ferromagnets and the spin-pumping induced spin transport equation. Based on the formalism, a coupled motion of the magnetizations in a self-oscillation state is studied. The spin pumping is found to induce an in-phase synchronization of the magnetizations for the oscillation around the easy axis. For an out-of-plane self-oscillation around the hard axis, on the other hand, the spin pumping leads to an in-phase synchronization in a small current region, whereas an antiphase synchronization is excited in a large current region. We present a theoretical and numerical study of Fourier space triad phase dynamics in one-dimensional stochastically forced Burgers equation at Reynolds number $\mathrm{Re} \approx 2.7 \times 10^4$. We demonstrate that Fourier triad phases over the inertial range display a collective behaviour characterised by intermittent periods of synchronisation and alignment, reminiscent of Kuramoto model (Kuramoto 1984) and directly related to collisions of shocks in physical space. These periods of synchronisation favour efficient energy fluxes across the inertial range towards small scales, resulting in strong bursts of dissipation and enhanced coherence of Fourier energy spectrum. The fast time scale of the onset of synchronisation relegates energy dynamics to a passive role: this is further examined using a reduced system with the Fourier amplitudes fixed in time -- a phase-only model. We show that intermittent triad phase dynamics persists without amplitude evolution and we broadly recover many of the characteristics of the full Burgers system. In addition, for both full Burgers and phase-only systems the physical space velocity statistics reveals that triad phase alignment is directly related to the non-Gaussian statistics typically associated with structure-function intermittency in turbulent systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Fluid Mechanics

The peculiarities of the phase dynamics of stacks of coupled Josephson junctions with topologically trivial and nontrivial barriers have been investigated numerically and their comparative analysis is carried out. The effect of coupling and dissipation parameters on the parametric resonance in the breakpoint region is shown. It is found that the dependence of the breakpoint voltage on the dissipation parameter demonstrates a minimum due to the changing of frequency of longitudinal plasma wave. We have shown that in case of the stack with nontrivial barriers the observed minimum shifts along the $\beta$ to the $\sqrt{2}$ in comparison with trivial barriers stack. We assume that the found features may be used for the experimental determination of Majorana fermions in the stack of JJs with the nontrivial barriers.

We consider networks of coupled phase oscillators of different complexity: Kuramoto-Daido-type networks, generalized Winfree networks, and hypernetworks with triple interactions. For these setups an inverse problem of reconstruction of the network connections and of the coupling function from the observations of the phase dynamics is addressed. We show how a reconstruction based on the minimization of the squared error can be implemented in all these cases. Examples include random networks with full disorder both in the connections and in the coupling functions, as well as networks where the coupling functions are taken from experimental data of electrochemical oscillators. The method can be directly applied to asynchronous dynamics of units, while in the case of synchrony, additional phase resettings are necessary for reconstruction.

This paper presents a learning-based approach for impromptu trajectory tracking for non-minimum phase systems, i.e., systems with unstable inverse dynamics. Inversion-based feedforward approaches are commonly used for improving tracking performance; however, these approaches are not directly applicable to non-minimum phase systems due to their inherent instability. In order to resolve the instability issue, existing methods have assumed that the system model is known and used pre-actuation or inverse approximation techniques. In this work, we propose an approach for learning a stable, approximate inverse of a non-minimum phase baseline system directly from its input-output data. Through theoretical discussions, simulations, and experiments on two different platforms, we show the stability of our proposed approach and its effectiveness for high-accuracy, impromptu tracking. Our approach also shows that including more information in the training, as is commonly assumed to be useful, does not lead to better performance but may trigger instability and impact the effectiveness of the overall approach., Comment: Accepted for publication in the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L), July 2018

Collective synchronous motion of the phases is introduced in a model for the stochastic passive advection-diffusion of a scalar with external forcing. The model for the phase coupling dynamics follows the well known Kuramoto model paradigm of limit-cycle oscillators. The natural frequencies in the Kuramoto model are assumed to obey a given scale dependence through a dispersion relation of the drift-wave form $-\beta\frac{k}{1+k^2}$, where $\beta$ is a constant representing the typical strength of the gradient. The present aim is to study the importance of collective phase dynamics on the characteristic time evolution of the fluctuation energy and the formation of coherent structures. Our results show that the assumption of a fully stochastic phase state of turbulence is more relevant for high values of $\beta$, where we find that the energy spectrum follows a $k^{-7/2}$ scaling. Whereas for lower $\beta$ there is a significant difference between a-synchronised and synchronised phase states, and one could expect the formation of coherent modulations in the latter case., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics of Plasmas

Research toward powerful information processing systems that circumvent the interconnect bottleneck by exploiting the nonlinear evolution of multiple phase dynamics in locally connected arrays is discussed. We focus on a scheme in which logic states are defined by the electrical phase of a dynamic process and information processing is realized through interactions between the elements in the array. Simulation results are given for networks comprised of neuron-like integrate-and-fire elements, which could potentially be implemented by ultra-small tunnel junctions, molecules and other types of nanoscale elements. This approach could lead to powerful information processing systems due to massive parallelism in simple, highly scalable nano-architectures. The rational for this approach, its advantages, simulation results, critical issues, and future research directions are discussed.

While Boolean logic has been the backbone of digital information processing, there are classes of computationally hard problems wherein this conventional paradigm is fundamentally inefficient. Vertex coloring of graphs, belonging to the class of combinatorial optimization represents such a problem; and is well studied for its wide spectrum of applications in data sciences, life sciences, social sciences and engineering and technology. This motivates alternate, and more efficient non-Boolean pathways to their solution. Here, we demonstrate a coupled relaxation oscillator based dynamical system that exploits the insulator-metal transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2), to efficiently solve the vertex coloring of graphs. By harnessing the natural analogue between optimization, pertinent to graph coloring solutions, and energy minimization processes in highly parallel, interconnected dynamical systems, we harness the physical manifestation of the latter process to approximate the optimal coloring of k-partite graphs. We further indicate a fundamental connection between the eigen properties of a linear dynamical system and the spectral algorithms that can solve approximate graph coloring. Our work not only elucidates a physics-based computing approach but also presents tantalizing opportunities for building customized analog co-processors for solving hard problems efficiently.

The relationship between carrier envelope phase (CEP) slip of cavity soliton (CS) and pump phase detuning is derived analytically and numerically. To preserve the stability of CS, CEP slip always equals to the pump phase detuning. When CEP slip fails to follow the pump phase detuning, CS becomes unstable. A description in terms of phase and amplitude variables is given, for nonlinear oscillators subject to white Gaussian noise described by It\^o stochastic differential equations. The stochastic differential equations derived for the amplitude and the phase are rigorous, and their validity is not limited to the weak noise limit. If the noise intensity is small, the equations can be efficiently solved using asymptotic expansions. Formulas for the expected angular frequency, expected oscillation amplitude and amplitude variance are derived using It\^o calculus.
