54. Impact of forest fire on soil seed bank composition in Himalayan Chir pine forest.

Abstract

Aims To explain how plant community copes with a recurring anthropogenic forest fire in Himalayan Chir pine forest, it is important to understand their postfire regeneration strategies. The primary aim of the study was to know: (i) how fire impact soil seed bank composition and (ii) how much soil seed bank composition differs with standing vegetation after the forest fire. Methods Soil samples were collected from burned and adjoining unburned sites in blocks using three layers down to 9 cm depth immediately after a forest fire and incubated in the net-house for seedling emergence. Same sites were revisited during late monsoon/early autumn season to know the species composition of standing vegetation recovered after a forest fire. Important Findings Soil contained viable seeds of >70 species. The average seed bank density was 8417 and 14 217 seeds/m2 in the burned and unburned site, respectively. In both sites, it decreased with increasing soil depth. Overall fire had no significant impact on seed density; however, taking individual layers into consideration, fire had a significant impact on seed density only in the uppermost soil layer. The species richness of soil seed bank and standing vegetation was 73 and 100, respectively (with 35 shared species), resulting in a similarity of about 40%. In contrast, >80% species in soil seed bank was found similar between burned and unburned sites. Further, there were no significant differences in species richness of standing vegetation in burned (87 spp.) and unburned (78 spp.) sites. Our results showed that fire had an insignificant impact on soil seed bank composition and restoration potential of a plant species from seeds. The understory herb and shrub plant community's ability to form a fire-resistant viable soil seed bank and capable to recover in the postfire rainy season, explains how they reduce the risk of recurring fire damage in maintaining their population. Abstract

Background and Aims Hydroperiod drives plant community composition in wetlands, resulting in distinct zonation patterns. Here, we explored the role of seed germination traits in shaping wetland community assembly along a hydroperiod gradient. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that seeds of reed, mudflat, swamp, shallow- and deep-water communities only germinate under a specific set of environmental factors characterized by the community-specific optimal conditions for seedling survival and growth. Methods In a three-factorial experiment, we tested the seed germination response of 50 species typical for temperate wetlands of Europe to temperature fluctuations (constant vs. fluctuating temperature), illumination (light vs. darkness) and oxygen availability (aerobic vs. hypoxia). Phylogenetic principal component analysis, cluster analysis and phylogenetic linear regressions were used to confirm the community-specific seed germination niches. Key Results Our study revealed the presence of five distinct, community-specific seed germination niches that reflect adaptations made by the study communities to decreasing light intensity, temperature fluctuations and oxygen availability along the hydroperiod gradient. Light as a germination trigger was found to be important in mudflats, swamps and shallow water, whereas the seeds of reed and deep-water species were able to germinate in darkness. A fluctuating temperature is only required for seed germination in mudflat species. Germination of species in the communities at the higher end of the hydroperiod gradient (reed and mudflat) demonstrated a strict requirement for oxygen, whereas swamp, shallow- and deep-water species also germinated under hypoxia. Conclusions Our study supports the recent argument that the inclusion of seed germination traits in community ecology adds significant insights to community response to the abiotic and biotic environment. Furthermore, the close relationship between seed germination adaptations and community assembly could help reach a better understanding of the existing patterns of wetland plant distribution at local scales and wetland vegetation dynamics, as well as facilitate nature conservation measures and aquatic habitat restoration. Abstract

We investigated the dimorphic perianth colour of Salsola vermiculata and its association with seed germination percentage, interactions with temperature, light, salinity and recovery from prior salinity exposure. Seeds with and without pink and yellow perianth were incubated at three thermal regimes, two photoperiods, and five salinity levels. Germination recovery after salinity exposure was observed on seeds that failed to germinate during the salinity study. The germination percentage and rate were significantly related to the perianth colour, the presence of perianth wings, thermal regimes and photoperiod. The presence of a perianth wing significantly reduced germination percentage and germination rate in both the pink and the yellow morph, but the yellow morph exhibited a higher germination percentage. Perianth wing removal increased germination in saline conditions. With the perianth removed, germination recovery was higher for the pink morph than for the yellow one. We suggest that by providing two different strategies for balancing germination with dormancy during favourable conditions, the presence of two morphs makes S. vermiculata more successful in highly unpredictable desert environments. Abstract

Haloxylon salicornicum is a perennial shrub that grows in sandy and stony desert areas. This species produces two types of dispersal unit with yellow and pink winged perianths that are wind dispersed. This species has been considered as an excellent sand binder and can tolerate extreme temperature, drought and salinity. We compared the germination characteristics of both colored dispersal units (with and without a wing) under various light, temperature and salinity treatments. It was found that wing color, presence of wings, temperature and light have a significant effect on germination percentage and germination rate. The presence of a winged perianth significantly reduced the germination percentage and germination rate in both yellow and pink dispersal units. De-winged yellow dispersal units were able to tolerate higher salinity and, therefore, their germination was higher in all the tested concentrations of NaCl compared with pink de-winged dispersal units. However, salinity tolerance in both pink and yellow dispersal units decreased with increasing salinity concentration. The germination-recovery percentage was also higher for yellow compared with pink dispersal units. The present study has demonstrated that both morphological and physiological differences exist in different colored dispersal units, which might represent the combination of different complementary adaptive strategies and have ecological significance for Haloxylon salicornicum's successful survival in harsh desert environmental conditions. Abstract

Seedling emergence techniques provide an estimate of viable seeds in the soil seed bank based on germination of seeds under favourable germination conditions. The present contribution is aimed at studying whether artificial stratification in a cold chamber is capable of revealing more viable seeds in soil samples compared with natural cold-stratification in the soil through a winter period in order to estimate density and composition of soil seed bank in temperate forest ecosystem. A total of 384 soil samples were collected in December and June from permanently marked plots in a forest ecosystem from central Belgium. December samples were artificially stratified (AS) by undergoing a cold- moist stratification, before laying them in the greenhouse. June samples were put in a greenhouse for direct germination of seeds which were naturally stratified (NS). Emerging seedlings were identified and counted during 12 months. A total of 6960 seedlings emerged in the AS samples and 14,928 seedlings in the NS samples, corresponding to 2719 and 5831 seeds/m2 respectively. A total of 27 species emerged from the AS samples and 19 species from the NS samples. Based on our data in a forest ecosystem with temperate humid climate on loessic materials, artificial stratification allowed the emergence of a larger number of species from the soil seed bank, but natural stratification improved estimates of the seed bank density. Abstract

Herbivory is ubiquitous. Despite being a potential driver of plant distribution and performance, herbivory remains largely undocumented. Some early attempts have been made to review, globally, how much leaf area is removed through insect feeding. Kozlov et al., in one of the most comprehensive reviews regarding global patterns of herbivory, have compiled published studies regarding foliar removal and sampled data on global herbivory levels using a standardized protocol. However, in the review by Kozlov et al., only 15 sampling sites, comprising 33 plant species, were evaluated in tropical areas around the globe. In Brazil, which ranks first in terms of plant biodiversity, with a total of 46,097 species, almost half (43%) being endemic, a single data point was sampled, covering only two plant species. In an attempt to increase knowledge regarding herbivory in tropical plant species and to provide the raw data needed to test general hypotheses related to plant–herbivore interactions across large spatial scales, we proposed a joint, collaborative network to evaluate tropical herbivory. This network allowed us to update and expand the data on insect herbivory in tropical and temperate plant species. Our data set, collected with a standardized protocol, covers 45 sampling sites from nine countries and includes leaf herbivory measurements of 57,239 leaves from 209 species of vascular plants belonging to 65 families from tropical and temperate regions. They expand previous data sets by including a total of 32 sampling sites from tropical areas around the globe, comprising 152 species, 146 of them being sampled in Brazil. For temperate areas, it includes 13 sampling sites, comprising 59 species. Thus, when compared to the most recent comprehensive review of insect herbivory (Kozlov et al.), our data set has increased the base of available data for the tropical plants more than 460% (from 33 to 152 species) and the Brazilian sampling was increased 7,300% (from 2 to 146 species). In the book I Plant Regeneration from Seeds: A Global Warming Perspective i , Professors Carol and Jerry Baskin - distinguished scholars of Seed Ecology, collated and edited the recent research advances in seed biology/ecology by inviting well-known seed researchers from around the globe, who are the leaders in the field of seed biology/ecology of diverse vegetation types ranging from tropical savanna to arctic/alpine ecosystems. Although the editors accommodated all the major vegetation types or ecosystems in this well-produced book, the inclusion of a dedicated chapter on plants of wetland ecosystems could have made the book more valuable. From the initial chapters of this section, a vital point emerged that indicates that seed germination of arctic/alpine tundra plants could benefit from a warming temperature; however, this generalization must be considered with caution. Abstract

Research in global change ecology relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature in open areas at around 2 m above the ground. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0-5 and 5-15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (-0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Abstract

• A spatiotemporal model was developed to understand the Fagaceae acorn persistence. • Fagaceae acorns use three mechanisms to cope with post-dispersal conditions. • Climate change will significantly affect the persistence and germination ecology of Fagaceae acorns. Fagaceae is an iconic plant family with 1000+ species distributed predominantly in the northern hemisphere. The reproductive ecology of the Fagaceae species is highly complex, and in the past three centuries, understanding the fruit masting strategies, dispersal, pathogen pressure, and storage has enjoyed steady research interest. However, the interrelationship between these factors is surprisingly less explored, undermining how acorns survive the post-dispersal period. The ability of fruits (acorns, nuts) to survive post-dispersal conditions starts during the maturation drying stage. Successful fruit production depends on the maternal environment, with a 'good fruit production year' occurring every few years. This phenomenon might out-maneuver predators by providing sufficient numbers to be consumed but still leaving enough for germination. Because most Fagaceae species have desiccation-sensitive (DS) fruits, survival after dispersal is challenging due to frequent dry spells. Fruit size is not phylogenetically conserved within the genus, with the average fruit mass of Castanea being 50 times higher than the desiccation-tolerant genus Fagus. Larger fruit size may be an adaptation in dry areas because prolonged drying continuously desiccates large-sized cotyledons before desiccating embryos. For species adapted to dry environments, synchronizing dispersal with the growing season could be beneficial, but exceptions exist. Many consumers, such as rodents, aid in the dispersal of fruits, but some fruits are killed in the process, especially those predated late. Upon settling on a site, the pericarp protects the embryo to a certain extent; if drying occurs, the cotyledons become the first site of water loss. However, under extreme drying, survival depends on sporadic rainfall, i.e., wet-dry cycle, which aids in maintaining the critical moisture content required by the fruits for survival. Nonetheless, these adaptive mechanisms are challenged by climate change, which affects the maturation, persistence, and seedling establishment of numerous Fagaceae species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 p ixels ( summarized f rom 8 519 u nique t emperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines.
