The idea that individuals tend to choose a romantic partner following similarities on personality traits has always attracted much attention in the psychological literature, although results were controversial. We conducted a new data analysis approach to personality traits of 235 newlywed couples. Univariate analysis revealed that a neurotic husband is usually paired with a lesser extrovert and open wife. To figure out if this mating selection pattern may be translated in a mathematical predictive model a twofold approach was employed by using Partial Least Squares regression and machine learning algorithm. This article reports a meta-analysis of the relationships between the Big Five personality traits and problematic mobile phone use (PMPU). After searching and screening the literature, a total of 36 studies involving 15,660 participants were included in the analysis. Using the random-effects model, the results indicated that neuroticism and extraversion were positively associated with PMPU. Conversely, agreeableness and conscientiousness were negatively associated with PMPU, while openness showed no association with PMPU. The result also showed that culture could moderate the relationship between openness and PMPU. Specifically, the negative relationship between openness and PMPU was not significant in collectivist culture but was significant in individualistic culture. In conclusion, high neuroticism, high extraversion, low agreeableness, and low conscientiousness are associated with PMPU. Moreover, the relationship between neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness and PMPU is relatively stable. People with high emotional intelligence (EI) understand themselves and others well, and perform well at work. Trait EI has been described as 'a constellation of emotion-related self-perceptions and dispositions' (Petrides and Furnham 2006 (See CR56)), and can be measured by the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Short Form (TEIQue-SF). The aims were to validate the Swedish version of TEIQue-SF by (1) investigating its internal consistency; (2) exploring its relationships with 'Big Six' and 'Dark Triad' personality traits as well as with self-perceived individual work performance; and (3) identifying which personality traits best explain variations in Trait EI, and whether this trait can predict variations in work performance over and above personality traits. Multi-occupational employees in Sweden (N = 228; M = 34 years, SD = 12.6, range 16-71 years, 66% women) with an average work experience of 14 years (SD = 11.5) were surveyed. In line with past research, internal consistency of TEIQue-SF was good, for the global Trait EI scale score (.86), and for one of its subdimensions (Well-Being) (.81). Global trait EI scale score and its subscales correlated negatively with Neuroticism and Machiavellianism, and positively with Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to Experience, and Narcissism. Sociability and Self-Control had, however, almost zero correlations with Machiavellianism. All subscales of global trait EI scale score correlated positively with Task Performance and Contextual Performance. On separate regression analyses, Big Six traits explained 48%, and Narcissism 14%, of the variation in global trait EI scale score. Trait EI accounted for a significantly larger proportion of the variation in Contextual Performance than any of the Big Six traits, and an additional 6% of the variation in Task Performance when controlling for gender, age, Neuroticism and Conscientiousness. The Swedish version of TEIQue-SF has good reliability as a global trait EI scale, reasonably theoretically and empirically grounded relationships with relevant variables for the workplace, and incremental validity over and above Big Six traits in predicting work performance in younger people with relatively high educational levels. Prior research on the effects of personality on depression has focused heavily on the Five Factor Model (FFM). However, the FFM has recently been criticized for that it does not capture the 'dark side' of personality. To address this research gap, a field study consisting of two waves of survey was conducted to explore the relationships between the Dark Triad (DT) personality traits and depressive symptoms. Results of a path analysis on data collected from a sample of 228 full-time employees from diverse industries in Taiwan showed that Machiavellianism and psychopathy were positively associated with the interpersonal and cognitive dimensions of depressive symptoms, respectively. Narcissism was found to be the strongest predictor of depressive symptoms among the DT traits - It was found to be associated with all four dimensions of depressive symptoms and the relationships were all negative. The purpose of this study was to review the relationship between dark personality traits and work values in athletes. In total, 261 athletes from various universities in Turkey (179 male and 82 female) voluntarily participated in this study. The participants were administered two scales: the Turkish versions of the Work Values Inventory and the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen. Canonical correlation analysis was used to explore the correlations among variables in the work values and dark personality datasets. The results revealed a negative correlation between work values and the presence of dark personality characteristics. Creativity and achievement were key variables with the largest contribution to the first canonical root in the work values set. Similarly, the variables with the largest contribution to the first canonical root in the dark personality set were Machiavellianism and psychopathy. In addition, achievement and prestige in the work values set and narcissism and psychopathy in the dark personality set were correlated with the second canonical root. The expectancy-value theory (EVT) and the control theory both provide a framework for explaining how personality facets might be impacted. In two pilot studies, (bottoms-up interventions) were used to determine if facets of personality could change. Study one examined the impact of brief Behavioral Activation training on facets of Conscientiousness. Study two examined the impact of instructional feedback and monitoring (coaching) on facets relating to the big five personality traits. Findings showed a 5-week Behavioral Activation training increased both logical thinking and preparedness (facets of conscientiousness). Additionally, 12-weeks of coaching lead to changes in four of the big five personality traits. The aim of this research was to analyse the connections between personality traits and horizontal and vertical forms of individualism and collectivism, regarded as social orientations, in two national groups of students. The analyses were conducted in the context of psychosocial functioning in the academic environment. A total of 210 students were examined including 109 of Polish nationality and 101 of Ukrainian nationality. Despite the historical and geographical proximity of both countries, we predicted that different relationships between variables will occur in the two samples of students. The following tests were used: the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) and the Vertical- Horizontal Individualism-Collectivism Scale (KIRH) in Polish and Ukrainian versions. The results indicated that Polish students had significantly higher horizontal orientation, both in individualism and collectivism, compared to their Ukrainian colleagues. Polish students were also more agreeable and open to experience than Ukrainian students. There were significantly different patterns of correlations between the analysed variables in the two national groups. The obtained z-statistics revealed differences between groups in correlations between the vertical form of both individualism and collectivism and such personality traits as extraversion, emotional stability, and openness to experience. Personality is an aspect of individual differences that contribute to one's confidence and self-esteem, which can then impact on learning achievement such as reading ability as well as self-assessments of reading comprehension (i.e., metacomprehension). The present study investigated the role of individual differences on the Big Five personality in predicting reading comprehension and metacomprehension accuracy before and after a test. Personality traits were found to uniquely relate to reading comprehension, self-assessed confidence in comprehension, and metacomprehension accuracy. Openness to Experience positively correlated with all measures of confidence assessments on reading comprehension but failed to correlate to actual reading performance, indicating that participants were overconfident in their ability to perform. Extraversion negatively correlated with self-evaluation of comprehension performance and did not predict actual comprehension performance. Cognitive style seems to influence cognitive activities in many important ways. A recently proposed Cognitive style indicator (CoSI) operationalizes three cognitive styles: knowing, planning and creating style. This study was designed to investigate the relation of five factor personality traits and Need for Cognition (NFC) with regard to a preference towards a certain cognitive style, depending on the age of participants. A sample of students (n = 108) and middle-aged employed adults (n = 115) completed CoSI, Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI-10) and Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI). The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis have validated CoSI on an independent sample and confirmed its originally proposed 3-factor structure. Furthermore, the mediation model with multigroup structure for two age cohorts highlighted several significant connections between personality traits, NFC and three hypothesized cognitive styles. Previous studies have shown that the Dark Triad traits (psychopathy, narcissism and Machiavellianism) are associated with impulsivity. However, prior work has relied exclusively on retrospective assessment via self-report questionnaires or on one-time behavioral measures of impulsive behavior. Therefore, we examined how the Dark Triad traits relate to moment-to-moment impulsivity as people navigate through their natural environment in a given day. For 14 days, 283 non-clinical adult volunteers carried smartphone devices to monitor their daily impulsive behaviors. Participants were randomly prompted five times per day. In addition, the pattern of correspondence between the moment-to-moment impulsivity monitoring and the already established impulsivity assessment methods (retrospective self-report questionnaire, i.e., 48-item Discounting Inventory; behavioral task, i.e., Delay-Discounting task with pairs of hypothetical choices) was tested. Strong correlations were found between psychopathy, narcissism, and self-reported impulsivity. Moreover, those traits showed weaker (but still significant) correlations with both, the one-time behavioral and the momentary monitoring measures of impulsivity. Machiavellianism did not correlate with any type of impulsivity assessment. When testing the association between the self-report, behavioral, and momentary measures of impulsivity, analysis revealed weak to moderate correlations. The present study (N = 212; 150 females) examined the relationships between the Dark Triad, empathy, and emotion recognition in a cross-cultural sample. The Dark Triad, especially psychopathy, impeded cognitive empathy, which highlights their indifference towards others' emotional states. Further, the Dark Triad and primary psychopathy, but not secondary psychopathy, hampered emotion recognition, which was measured using multi-modal stimuli. Facebook started as a platform intended for connecting people but it has developed into a rich information source. Based on the uses-and-gratification approach, we examined to what extent censorship endorsement and personality factors can explain information seeking behavior on Facebook. 1525 German-speaking Facebook users participated in a cross-sectional survey. Censorship endorsement, three personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, and openness), age, and gender served as predictors in blockwise regression models. Participants' information seeking behavior on Facebook served as the criterion variable, whereby we examined different behavioral strategies. Overall, the extent of one's endorsement of censorship was positively and reliably related to different facets of information seeking. Apparently, censorship might be considered a protection measure to establish a decent communication and information space. In contrast, personality traits were inconsistently related to different facets of information seeking. Extraversion and neuroticism were positively related to information seeking in general, but their impact was absent on some subscales. The effects of age and gender differed from what has been found in previous studies. This article investigates how Big Five personality traits are related to creative achievements and lawbreaking behavior in a large sample (N = 1669) of Polish adults. Structural equation modelling with personality modelled as a bi-factor structure demonstrated a weak, yet significant link (r = .21) between latent factors of creative achievements and lawbreaking behavior. A general factor of personality was unrelated to creative achievement, but negatively linked to lawbreaking behavior. Lawbreaking behavior was also negatively predicted by conscientiousness and agreeableness, while only openness positively predicted creative achievement. The current study used artificial intelligence to create a personality profile of pseudocommandos based on language used in their writings. Pseudocommandos are mass murderers who are obsessed with weapons and meticulously plan their attack. The data source was the writings of 11 male pseudocommandos from the United States, of whom 7 committed suicide at the time of the attack. Manifestos and other writing samples by pseudocommandos were collected online in the public domain and analysed using IBM Watson Personality Insights. Results indicated pseudocommandos scored higher than the general population on Openness to experience, and lower than the general population on Extraversion and Agreeableness. No difference was found between pseudocommandos and the general population on Neuroticism or Conscientiousness. Facet-level analysis generally indicated a similar direction of results. One of the most prominent factors in developing more effective teaching and learning strategies is the association between personality traits and motivation. The current research examined the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and students' motivation. Thirteen English teachers and 375 high school students participated in this study. The teachers completed the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the students filled out Language Learning Orientations Scale - Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation, and Amotivation Subscales (LLOS - IEA). The results showed some significant relationships between the Big Five traits and the subscales of motivation. Particularly, teachers' conscientiousness personality trait had a positive effect on students' intrinsic- motivation- knowledge. In addition, teachers' extraversion personality trait had a negative effect on students' intrinsic- motivation- accomplishment, and knowledge. The results of this study can help the teachers to know how to behave in the classroom. Studies examining the relationship between personality and Internet usage have usually used small and non-representative samples. In the present study, we examine the relationship between the Five Factor Model of Personality and Internet usage in a large nationally representative Swedish sample (N = 1694). Neuroticism was negatively associated with overall Internet usage, whereas extraversion and openness to experience were shown to be positively associated with overall Internet usage. However, exploring these associations across categories of Internet usage and generation cohorts revealed some other interesting patterns. Specifically, neuroticism was negatively associated with using the Internet for activities relating to information and duties but not for leisure and social activities. Extraversion was positively associated with using the Internet for leisure and social activities among DotNets (born 1977-1999), whereas among Dutifuls (born 1910-1945) and Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) extraversion was positively associated with using the Internet for information and duty activities. Openness to experience was positively associated with Internet usage but only among Baby Boomers. Conscientiousness was a significant predictor of Internet usage only for DotNets and GenXers (born 1965-1976). In these cohorts, conscientiousness was positively associated with using the Internet for information and duty activities but negatively associated with using the Internet for leisure and social activities. Apparently, understanding the relationship between personality and Internet usage is not possible without considering the modifying role of categories of Internet usage and generation cohorts. The present study examined the role of psychological acceptance in the relationship between neuroticism, extraversion and happiness. 216 adults from a Chinese society ranging in age from 18 to 30 years (M = 19.7, SD = 1.48) completed the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, The Chinese version of the EPQ (CEPQ), and the Chinese People Happiness Scale (CPHS). As predicted, psychological acceptance had a significant negative correlation with neuroticism (p < .01) and a significant positive correlation with extraversion (p < .01) and with happiness (p < .01). In the linear mediation models, psychological acceptance was found to partially mediate the relationship between neuroticism and happiness ([beta] = -.34, p < .01). Psychological acceptance was found to partially mediate the relationship between extraversion and happiness ([beta] = .19, p < .01). The non-linear mediation model analyses also support both neuroticism and extraversion on happiness are mediated by psychological acceptance. Accordingly, these results suggest that the effects of neuroticism and extraversion on happiness can be at least partially accounted for by psychological acceptance. Personality is among the most studied correlates of belief in the paranormal. There is, however, some inconsistency in their association. The purpose of the present study was to provide a more clear view of how paranormal beliefs are associated with personality by (1) using a psychometrically sound instrument for assessing belief in the paranormal, and (2) investigating the differential role in paranormal beliefs of the two lower-level aspects of each Big Five domain. French citizens completed a modified version of the Revised-Paranormal Belief Scale and the Big Five Aspect Scales. A six-factor model of paranormal beliefs displaying strong psychometric properties was identified. Correlations between personality and paranormal beliefs were stronger at the aspect level than at the domain level. Consistent with our differential prediction hypothesis, the effect of one aspect was not the same as another aspect of the same broad domain of personality on belief in the paranormal. Withdrawal, Openness, Industriousness, and Assertiveness did a good job of predicting belief in the paranormal, while Volatility, Intellect, Orderliness and Enthusiasm were not predictors of such beliefs. Given the relationship between attitudes and behaviors (Frymier and Nadler 2007 (See CR24)), perceptions toward the environment are of concern in shaping environmental behaviors. Accordingly, understanding how to improve people's connection to nature may be a vital research area linked to sustainability efforts. To further this understanding, the present study examined the contribution of empathy in mediating the relationship between personality traits and connectedness to nature. The Big Five Questionnaire, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the Connectedness to Nature Scale were administered to 230 Italian workers. The results indicated that the relationship between the personality traits of agreeableness and openness and connectedness to nature is mediated by empathy, in particular by perspective taking and empathic concern. According to McAdams and Pals, American Psychologist, 61(3), 204-217 (2006 (See CR24)), personality is not only expressed through traits but also through characteristic adaptations, including values. In the present study we analyze how two aspects of personality - temperament traits (Strelau 2008 (See CR42)) and values (Schwartz 2007 (See CR34)) - are related to hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. Earlier studies showed that temperament is linked to hedonic well-being, but the links between values and hedonic well-being are unclear. There is only little data on how traits and values are linked to eudaimonic well-being. We hypothesised that traits predict hedonic well-being, while values predict eudaimonic well-being because the roots of eudaimonia require the realization of one's potential that may be achieved through realization of value related goals, while hedonic well-being is more closely linked to stable differences in emotionality. 130 adults reported on their temperament, values, hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. We conducted hierarchical regressions for each well-being component. All components of hedonic well-being (positive affect, negative affect and satisfaction) were predicted by temperament only, while eudaimonic well-being was predicted by temperament and by value dimensions: positively by Openness to change, Self-transcendence, Conservation and negatively by Self-enhancement. This shows that mechanisms governing the experience of well-being are attached to at least two levels of personality - one stable and partly linked to human biology and the other to a culturally determined set of individual values. Mindfulness research is growing within organizational studies. Emerging evidence across many fields demonstrates that mindfulness is related to numerous individuals' outcomes in the workplace, but this knowledge base has not been investigated enough. This study extends previous literature by examining the extent to which trait mindfulness influences individuals' job performance and career success. Also, this study investigates the interactive effects of trait mindfulness and proactive personality on job performance and career success. The sample of the study included three hundred subjects with at least of three years of work experience in the United States of America. Hypotheses were tested using multiple linear regression. The results supported the hypotheses that trait mindfulness would be positively associated with both job performance and career success, measured by career satisfaction. Interestingly, trait mindfulness moderated the relationship between proactive personality and both job performance and career satisfaction such that high trait mindfulness substitutes the positive influence of proactive personality. Procrastination is a common phenomenon among young people today in all aspects of their daily lives (Bakar and Khan Journal of Education and Learning (EduLearn), 10, 265-274 2016 (See CR1)). The current literature has tended to focus on passive procrastination, while less attention was paid to active procrastination. Despite Bui's (Journal of Social Psychology, 147, 197-209, 2007 (See CR3)) call for additional empirical studies on active procrastination, researchers have simply acknowledged the presence of such an adaptive type of procrastination behavior without further examining its related constructs. Therefore, this study examines both active and passive procrastination to identify the personality traits that affect (active and passive) procrastination and to compare and contrast this relationship between males and females. Both personality and work engagement are related to well-being. The current study examined the role of work engagement in the associations between personality (core self-evaluations (CSE), proactive personality) and well-being. Participants who are all nurses completed measures of CSE, proactive personality, work engagement and job satisfaction as an indicator of well-being. Higher levels of CSE and proactive personality were related to greater work engagement and job satisfaction. Higher level of work engagement was associated with more job satisfaction. Work engagement fully mediated the relationship CSE and job satisfaction and partially mediated the association between proactive personality and job satisfaction. Disturbances in the ability to recognize emotional faces have been attributed to individuals with specific personality disorders. Considering the importance of the dimensional models of psychopathology, studies involving healthy participants are becoming increasingly relevant in the domain of personality disorders. In this context, our main goal was to assess how clinical personality traits affect the ability to recognize basic emotions in a sample of subclinical participants. Photographs of faces expressing six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise) were presented to 72 undergraduate students (42 women; M age = 23.3 yr., SD = 3.4), whose dominant personality traits (narcissistic, histrionic and compulsive) were assessed using the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III. Data were analyzed using both a whole sample regression approach (relating personality traits with emotion recognition performance) and a group comparison approach (comparing groups of participants with dominant personality - narcissistic, histrionic and compulsive - as well as comparing groups with subclinical symptomatology for anxiety and hypomania). The main results suggested a poor recognition of sadness in narcissistic participants and a higher difficulty for anger recognition in participants with anxiety symptoms.
