75. Photophysics of thermally-activated delayed fluorescence emitters and its impact on the performance of organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract

Research in thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters is gathering momentum and rapidly progressing towards commercial application in display industry. Successful TADF combines design strategies that result in thermal up-conversion of nonemissive triplets into emissive singlet excitons, increasing the maximum internal efficiency from 25 to 100 % in purely organic systems. Its performance can therefore compete with current leading emitters used in industry, however it is not without its hurdles and a full understanding of how to produce efficient TADF systems and stable organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is still elusive. This thesis aims at illuminating strategies to achieve highly efficient and stable TADF. By examining the photophysical aspects of different donor-acceptor systems (D-A, D2-A, D3- A, D4-A and D-A-D) and, more importantly, establishing comparisons between different subsets of molecules, subtle but important aspects of the performance of these emitters are isolated to allow understanding of future design rules for better combinations. These comparisons are then correlated with the emitters' performance in devices. In a multi-donor platform, the inherent TADF mechanism and in host are both considered by comparing the effect of number and position of donors as well as rigidity and polarity of the host environment to the D-A angles. A separate comparative study elucidates the real heavy atom effect in an emitter with dual emission from two different conformations. Furthermore, the application of a well-established spectroscopy technique novel to TADF tests its physical mechanism by probing character and mixing of the excited states involved. Finally, in a more application-driven approach, a combination of three different TADF molecules for the production of white light is studied in simple device structures. In this sense, guidelines of how to produce optimised TADF systems emerge, moving the technology ever close to its industrial application.

81. Effect of Ketorolac Administration on the Rate of Nonunion of Operatively Treated Pediatric Long-Bone Fractures: A Matched Cohort Analysis.

Abstract

Background: Nonunion is a rare yet serious complication in pediatric fracture healing that can lead to patient morbidity and economic burden. The administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been associated with an increased risk of fracture nonunion in adults, but data are lacking in the pediatric population. This study examines the relationship between postoperative ketorolac administration and nonunion in operatively managed pediatric long-bone fractures. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with use of TriNetX, a research network that encompasses data from the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. A total of 462,260 patients from 52 health-care organizations met the inclusion criteria. Patients <18 years old with operatively managed upper or lower-extremity long-bone fractures were included. The exposure of interest was ketorolac administration within 30 days postoperatively between 2003 and 2023. Nonunion was identified and verified with use of the pertinent medical codes. Absolute risks and hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated for both study groups. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: After propensity score matching, 48,778 patients were identified per group. The incidence of nonunion was 2.19% in the ketorolac group and 0.93% in the non-ketorolac group (HR, 2.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.46, 3.21; p < 0.0001). Subgroup analyses demonstrated a higher risk of nonunion in patients with lower-extremity fractures (HR, 3.45; 95% CI: 3.14, 3.75; p < 0.0001) than in those with upper-extremity fractures (HR, 2.11; 95% CI: 1.84, 2.32; p < 0.0001). Among the fracture location subgroups, the greatest HR for nonunion was observed in patients with femoral fractures, followed sequentially by those with tibial and/or fibular fractures, humeral fractures, and radial and/or ulnar fractures. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the largest study to date to explore postoperative ketorolac use and nonunion in the setting of operatively managed pediatric long-bone fractures. Nonunion in children was rare, occurring in <1% of all included patients. Ketorolac administration was associated with a 2 to 3-fold increase in nonunion risks, with pronounced implications for patients with lower-extremity fractures, particularly those with femoral fractures. Clinicians should weigh the therapeutic advantages of non-opiate analgesia with ketorolac against the risk of nonunion in order to optimize postoperative pain management and recovery. Abstract

This work describes the preliminary study and evaluation of the design of a cavity beam position monitor (cBPM) for the Main Linac at the International Linear Collider (ILC) project. It is required to design and build a prototype to be tested together with a superconducting quadrupole in a cryostat, with a spatial resolution of less than 1 micron. The design of a reentrant cBPM by CEA Saclay is used as the starting point for this analysis, where the geometry is evaluated to identify areas for improvement. A typical analog read-out system is simulated, allowing for a detailed evaluation of the impact of each component and providing opportunities to further estimate the device’s performance. Finally, the numerical BIR-ME 3D method is employed to estimate the cBPM output.

Abstract

DC-DC converters are crucial components in a wide array of applications, from renewable energy systems to electronic devices. These converters are tasked with maintaining precise voltage regulation despite, fluctuations in operating conditions and inherent system uncertainties. This study delves into the challenges of developing a reliable adaptive control system for DC-DC converters capable of managing (uncertainties) in parameters such as inductance, capacitance, and load resistance. These challenges of the study introduce advanced control strategies that leverage adaptive control and robust optimization techniques. These methodologies enhance both the performance and resilience of the converters. An adaptive control strategy has been developed through theoretical research. This strategy is designed to dynamically adjust to changes in system (parameters, ensuring) stable operation and maintaining optimal performance under various conditions. Conventional backstepping controllers (BS) have been adopted. The backstepping controller possesses the benefits of backstepping by dealing with the overall system as a combination of multiple subsystems and the advantage of providing an accurate estimation of the uncertain parameters. Methodological objectives are shown by simulation results. These results show improvements in the stability and robustness of converters, affirming the potential of the adaptive control system to enhance the reliability dependent on these crucial components.
