Abstract

The National Plant Monitoring Scheme, coordinated by the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, JNCC and Plantlife, was launched in 2015 to provide an indication of the status and trends of plants and semi-natural habitats across the UK. The scheme is based on volunteer recording according to a set protocol at pre-determined monads selected through a weighted-random sampling scheme.

Abstract

glycoprotein E and the AS01B adjuvant system (called HZ/su) had a clinically acceptable safety profile and elicited a robust immune response. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study in 18 countries to evaluate the efficacy and safety of HZ/su in older adults (≥50 years of age), stratified according to age group (50 to 59, 60 to 69, and ≥70 years). Participants received two intramuscular doses of the vaccine or placebo 2 months apart. The primary objective was to assess the efficacy of the vaccine, as compared with placebo, in reducing the risk of herpes zoster in older adults. RESULTS: A total of 15,411 participants who could be evaluated received either the vaccine (7698 participants) or placebo (7713 participants). During a mean follow-up of 3.2 years, herpes zoster was confirmed in 6 participants in the vaccine group and in 210 participants in the placebo group (incidence rate, 0.3 vs. 9.1 per 1000 person-years) in the modified vaccinated cohort. Summary: Rehabilitation has become an important aspect of equine practice. Unfortunately, there is limited knowledge or awareness of the general principles and methods used to develop safe and effective rehabilitation programmes. By following a few basic principles, appropriate rehabilitation programmes can be developed for individual horses with a wide range of injuries and sources of musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction. This article provides an outline of general guidelines to help practitioners interested in developing rehabilitation programmes or working with sports medicine and rehabilitation experts to provide the best possible treatment for individual horses with injuries at different stages of healing. Abstract

The efficacy of empirical non-carbapenem antibiotics for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae bacteremia (ESBL-B) is still inconclusive. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study to evaluate the efficacy of empirical non-carbapenem antibiotics for treating ESBL-B. Electronic medical records of individuals who were diagnosed with ESBL-B were reviewed between January 2010 and December 2014 at four university hospitals in Korea. Patients were classified into non-carbapenem and carbapenem groups according to the empirical antibiotic regimen. Patients treated with appropriate empirical antibiotics and who subsequently received carbapenems as definitive therapy were included in the analysis. The inverse probability of treatment weights, a statistical method that adjusts baseline statistics by giving weights based on propensity score, was used. During the study period, 232 adequately treated patients with ESBL-B were included in the analysis: 49 patients in the non-carbapenem group and 183 in the carbapenem group. The baseline characteristics and severity of infection were similar after propensity score weighting. The 30-day mortality rates for the two groups were not statistically significantly different (non-carbapenems 6.3% and carbapenems 11.4%; P = 0.42). In a multivariate analysis, empirical treatment with non-carbapenem antibiotics was not associated with 30-day all-cause mortality (HR 1.02, 95% CI 0.99-1.06, P = 0.14). In a subgroup analysis, empirical treatment with piperacillin-tazobactam was also not associated with 30-day all-cause mortality (HR 1.21, 95% CI 0.37-4.00, P = 0.75). Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production has been very rare in serotype K1 Klebsiella pneumoniae ST23 strains, which are well-known invasive community strains. Among 92 ESBL-producing strains identified in 218 isolates from nine Asian countries, serotype K1 K. pneumoniae strains were screened. Two ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae isolates from Singapore and Indonesia were determined to be serotype K1 and ST23. Abstract

[EN] Interactions among herbivores can shape the structure of their communities and drive their dynamics. However, detecting herbivore interactions can be challenging when they are deferred in space or time. Moreover, interactions among distantly related groups of herbivores, such as vertebrates and invertebrates, are poorly understood. We investigated the effect of invertebrate herbivory on the subsequent foraging choices of a small alpine-dwelling vertebrate, the collared pika (Ochotona collaris). We carried out a field experiment within pika territories, by presenting them with a choice of foraging sites following manipulation of invertebrate (caterpillar) herbivory. Pikas actively selected areas with increased, recent invertebrate herbivory. While the underlying mechanisms behind this interaction remain unknown, our results demonstrate a positive effect of invertebrate herbivores on subsequent vertebrate foraging preferences for the first time. Even among distantly related taxa, such interactions where one herbivore is cueing on the foraging of another, could drive the creation of herbivory hotspots, with cascading consequences for ecosystem processes. © 2013 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society.
