Search

Dwarf galaxies in groups of galaxies provide excellent test cases for models of structure formation. This led to a so-called small-scale crisis, including the famous missing satellite and too-big-to-fail problems. It was suggested that these two problems are solved by the introduction of baryonic physics in cosmological simulations. We test for the nearby grand spiral M83 - a Milky Way sibling - whether its number of dwarf galaxy companions is compatible with today's $\Lambda$ + Cold Dark Matter model using two methods: with cosmological simulations that include baryons, as well as with theoretical predictions from the sub-halo mass function. By employing distance measurements we recover a list of confirmed dwarf galaxies within 330 kpc around M83 down to a magnitude of $M_V =-10$. We found that both the state-of-the-art hydrodynamical cosmological simulation Illustris-TNG50 and theoretical predictions agree with the number of confirmed satellites around M83 at the bright end of the luminosity function (>10$^8$ solar masses) but underestimate it at the faint end (down to 10$^6$ solar masses) at more than 3$\sigma$ and 5$\sigma$ levels, respectively. This indicates a too-many satellites problem in $\Lambda$CDM for M83. Spin-valley properties in two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) has attracted significant interest due to the possible applications in quantum computing. Spin-valley properties can be exploited in TMDC quantum dot (QD) with well-resolved energy levels. This requires smaller QDs, especially in material systems with heavy carrier effective mass e.g. TMDCs and silicon. Device architectures employed for TMDC QDs so far have difficulty achieving smaller QDs. Therefore, an alternative approach in the device architecture is needed. Here, we propose a multilayer device architecture to achieve a gate-defined QD in TMDC with a relatively large energy splitting on the QD. We provide a range of device dimensions and dielectric thicknesses and its correlation with the QD energy splitting. The device architecture is modeled realistically. Moreover, we show that all the device parameters used in modeling are experimentally achievable. These studies lay the foundation for future work toward spin-valley qubits in TMDCs. This paper examines the interdependence of international success and competitive balance of domestic sports competitions. More specifically, we apply the notion of the Herfindahl-Hirschman index to examine the effect of international rewards on distortion of competitive balance in domestic competitions and derive conditions under which the level of domestic competitive balance raises or falls. We study Voronoi games on temporal graphs as introduced by Boehmer et al. (IJCAI 2021) where two players each select a vertex in a temporal graph with the goal of reaching the other vertices earlier than the other player. In this work, we consider the reverse temporal Voronoi game, that is, a player wants to maximize the number of vertices reaching her earlier than the other player. Since temporal distances in temporal graphs are not symmetric in general, this yields a different game. We investigate the difference between the two games with respect to the existence of Nash equilibria in various temporal graph classes including temporal trees, cycles, grids, cliques and split graphs. Our extensive results show that the two games indeed behave quite differently depending on the considered temporal graph class.

Recent advances in foundation models, especially in large multi-modal models and conversational agents, have ignited interest in the potential of generally capable embodied agents. Such agents will require the ability to perform new tasks in many different real-world environments. However, current foundation models fail to accurately model physical interactions and are therefore insufficient for Embodied AI. The study of causality lends itself to the construction of veridical world models, which are crucial for accurately predicting the outcomes of possible interactions. This paper focuses on the prospects of building foundation world models for the upcoming generation of embodied agents and presents a novel viewpoint on the significance of causality within these. We posit that integrating causal considerations is vital to facilitating meaningful physical interactions with the world. Finally, we demystify misconceptions about causality in this context and present our outlook for future research.

The spatial distribution of dwarf galaxies around their host galaxies is a critical test for the standard model of cosmology because it probes the dynamics of dark matter halos and is independent of the internal baryonic processes of galaxies. Co-moving planes-of-satellites have been found around the Milky Way, the Andromeda galaxy, and the nearby CenA galaxy, which seem to be at odds with the standard model of galaxy formation. Another nearby galaxy group, with a putative flattened distribution of dwarfs, is the M81 group. We present a quantitative analysis of the distribution of the M81 satellites using a Hough transform to detect linear structures. We confirm a flattened distribution of dwarf galaxies. Depending on the morphological type, we find a minor-to-major axis ratio of the satellite distribution to be 0.5 (all types) or 0.3 (dSph), which is in line with previous results for the M81 group. Comparing the orientation of this flattened structure in 3D with the surrounding large-scale matter distribution, we find a strong alignment with the local sheet and the planes-of-satellites around the Andromeda galaxy and Cen A. Employing velocities for a sub-sample of the dwarfs, we find no signal of co-rotation. Comparing the flattening and motion of the M81 dwarf galaxy system with IllustrisTNG50 we find good agreement between observations and simulations, but caution that i) velocity information of half of the satellites is missing, ii) velocities are coming mainly from dwarf irregulars clustered around NGC3077, which may hint towards an infall of a dwarf galaxy group and iii) some of the dwarfs may actually be tidal dwarf galaxies. From the missing velocities, we predict that the observed frequency within TNG may range between 2 to 29 per cent. Lattice field theory (LFT) is the standard non-perturbative method to perform numerical calculations of quantum field theory. However, the typical bottleneck of fermionic lattice calculations is the inversion of the Dirac matrix. This inversion is solved by iterative methods, like the conjugate gradient algorithm, where matrix-vector multiplications (MVMs) are the main operation. Photonic integrated circuits excel in performing quick and energy-efficient MVMs, but at the same time, they are known to have low accuracy. This can be overcome by using mixed precision methods. In this paper, we explore the idea of using photonic technology to fulfil the demand for computational power of fermionic lattice calculations. These methods have the potential to reduce computation costs by one order of magnitude. In [1], we initiated a program for the quantitative investigation of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and resonant bound states in QCD with the functional renormalisation group, concentrating on the full infrared dynamics of four-quark scatterings. In the present work we extend this study and take into account a three-momentum channel approximation ($s,t,u$-channel) for the Fierz-complete four-quark vertices. We find that the four-quark vertex in this approximation is quantitatively reliable. In particular, we have computed the pion pole mass, pion decay constant, Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes, the quark mass function and wave function. Our results confirm previous findings that low energy effective theories only reproduce QCD quantitatively, if initiated with a relatively low ultraviolet cutoff scale of the order of 500 MeV. We present a general framework for modeling power magnetic materials characteristics using deep neural networks. Magnetic materials represented by multidimensional characteristics (that mimic measurements) are used to train the neural autoencoder model in an unsupervised manner. The encoder is trying to predict the material parameters of a theoretical model, which is then used in a decoder part. The decoder, using the predicted parameters, reconstructs the input characteristics. The neural model is trained to capture a synthetically generated set of characteristics that can cover a broad range of material behaviors, leading to a model that can generalize on the underlying physics rather than just optimize the model parameters for a single measurement. After setting up the model, we prove its usefulness in the complex problem of modeling magnetic materials in the frequency and current (out-of-linear range) domains simultaneously, for which we use measured characteristics obtained for frequency up to $10$ MHz and H-field up to saturation., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the vibrational and magnetic properties of thin layers of chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$) with a thickness ranging from three to twenty layers (3~L to 20~L) revealed by the Raman scattering (RS) technique. Systematic dependence of the RS process efficiency on the energy of the laser excitation is explored for four different excitation energies: 1.96 eV, 2.21 eV, 2.41 eV, and 3.06 eV. Our characterization demonstrates that for 12 L CrBr$_3$, 3.06~eV excitation could be considered resonant with interband electronic transitions due to the enhanced intensity of the Raman-active scattering resonances and the qualitative change in the Raman spectra. Polarization-resolved RS measurements for 12 L CrBr$_3$ and first-principles calculations allow us to identify five observable phonon modes characterized by distinct symmetries, classified as the A$_\textrm{g}$ and E$_\textrm{g}$ modes. The evolution of phonon modes with temperature for a 20 L CrBr$_3$ encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride flakes demonstrates alterations of phonon energies and/or linewidths of resonances indicative of a transition between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic state at Curie temperature ($T_\textrm{C} \approx 50$ K). The exploration of the effects of thickness on the phonon energies demonstrated small variations pronounces exclusively for the thinnest layers in the vicinity of 3 - 5 L. This observation is attributed to strong localization in the real space of interband electronic excitations, limiting the effects of confinement for resonantly excited Raman modes to atomically thin layers., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Relaxation rates in nearly integrable systems usually increase quadratically with the strength of the perturbation that breaks integrability. We show that the relaxation rates can be significantly smaller in systems that are integrable along two intersecting lines in the parameter space. In the vicinity of the intersection point, the relaxation rates of certain observables increase with the fourth power of the distance from this point, whereas for other observables one observes standard quadratic dependence on the perturbation. As a result, one obtains exceedingly long-living prethermalization but with a reduced number of the nearly conserved operators. Properties of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) can be probed by measuring the dynamical properties of nucleus-nucleus collisions. In this study, we present the directed flow ($v_1$), elliptic flow ($v_2$) and stopping (VarXZ) measured in fixed target Sn + Sn collisions at 270 AMeV with the S$\pi$RIT Time Projection Chamber. We perform Bayesian analyses in which EoS parameters are varied simultaneously within the Improved Quantum Molecular Dynamics-Skyrme (ImQMD-Sky) transport code to obtain a multivariate correlated constraint. The varied parameters include symmetry energy, $S_0$, and slope of the symmetry energy, $L$, at saturation density, isoscalar effective mass, $m_{s}^*/m_{N}$, isovector effective mass, $m_{v}^{*}/m_{N}$ and the in-medium cross-section enhancement factor $\eta$. We find that the flow and VarXZ observables are sensitive to the splitting of proton and neutron effective masses and the in-medium cross-section. Comparisons of ImQMD-Sky predictions to the S$\pi$RIT data suggest a narrow range of preferred values for $m_{s}^*/m_{N}$, $m_{v}^{*}/m_{N}$ and $\eta$.

We report the discovery of 40 new satellite dwarf galaxy candidates in the sphere of influence of the Sombrero galaxy (M104) the most luminous galaxy in the Local Volume. Using the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam, we surveyed 14.4 square degrees of its surroundings, extending to the virial radius. Visual inspection of the deep images and GALFIT modelling yielded a galaxy sample highly complete down to $M_{g}\sim-9$ ($L_{g}\sim3\times 10^{5}\,L_\odot$) and spanning magnitudes $-16.4 < M_g < -8$ and half-light radii $50\,pc\ <\ r_e\ <\ 1600\,pc$ assuming the distance of M104. These 40 new, out of which 27 are group members with high confidence, double the number of potential satellites of M104 within the virial radius, placing it among the richest hosts in the Local Volume. Using a Principle Component Analysis (PCA), we find that the entire sample of candidates consistent with an almost circular on-sky distribution, more circular than any comparable environment found in the Illustris TNG100-1 simulation. However the distribution of the high probability sample is more oblate and consistent with the simulation. The cumulative satellite luminosity function is broadly consistent with analogues from the simulation, albeit it contains no bright satellite with $M_{g}<-16.4$ ($L_{g}\sim3 \times 10^{8}\,L_\odot$), a $2.3\,\sigma$ occurrence. We calculate non-perturbative self-consistent fermionic and bosonic spectral functions of ultra-cold Fermi gases with the spectral functional approach. This approach allows for a direct real-time computation of non-perturbative correlation functions, and in the present work we use spectral Dyson-Schwinger equations. We focus on the normal phase of the spin-balanced Fermi gas and provide numerical results for the full fermionic and bosonic spectral functions. The spectral functions are then used for the determination of the equation of state, the Tan contact and ejection rf spectra at unitarity. These results are compared to experimental data, the self-consistent T-matrix approach and lattice results. Our approach offers a wide range of applications, including the ab initio calculation of transport and spectral properties of the superfluid phase in the BCS-BEC crossover.

Most Milky Way dwarf galaxies are much less bound to their host than are relics of Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus and Sgr. These dwarfs are expected to have fallen into the Galactic halo less than 3 Gyr ago, and will therefore have undergone no more than one full orbit. Here, we have performed hydrodynamical simulations of this process, assuming that their progenitors are gas-rich, rotation-supported dwarfs. We follow their transformation through interactions with the hot corona and gravitational field of the Galaxy. Our dedicated simulations reproduce the structural properties of three dwarf galaxies: Sculptor, Antlia II and, with somewhat a lower accuracy, Crater II. This includes reproducing their large velocity dispersions, which are caused by ram-pressure stripping and Galactic tidal shocks. Differences between dwarfs can be interpreted as due to different orbital paths, as well as to different initial conditions for their progenitor gas and stellar contents. However, we failed to suppress in a single orbit the rotational support of our Sculptor analog if it is fully dark-matter dominated. In addition, we have found that classical dwarf galaxies like Sculptor may have stellar cores sufficiently dense to survive the pericenter passage through adiabatic contraction. On the contrary, our Antlia II and Crater II analogs are tidally stripped, explaining their large sizes, extremely low surface brightnesses, and velocity dispersion. We study how structural properties of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies are linked to their orbits in the Milky Way halo. From the inner to the outer halo, orbital energy increases and stellar-systems gradually move out of internal equilibrium: in the inner halo, high-surface brightness globular clusters are at pseudo-equilibrium, while further away, low-surface brightness clusters and dwarfs appear more tidally disturbed. Dwarf galaxies are the latest to arrive into the halo as indicated by their large orbital energies and pericenters, and have no time for more than one orbit. Their (gas-rich) progenitors likely lost their gas during their recent arrival in the Galactic halo. If dwarfs are at equilibrium with their dark matter (DM) content, the DM density should anti-correlate with pericenter. However, the transformation of DM dominated dwarfs from gas-rich rotation-supported into gas-poor dispersion-supported systems is unlikely accomplished during a single orbit. We suggest instead that the above anti-correlation is brought by the combination of ram-pressure stripping and of Galactic tidal shocks. Recent gas removal leads to an expansion of their stellar content caused by the associated gravity loss, making them sufficiently fragile to be transformed near pericenter passage. Out of equilibrium dwarfs would explain the observed anti-correlation of kinematics-based DM density with pericenter without invoking DM density itself, questioning its previous estimates. Ram-pressure stripping and tidal shocks may contribute to the dwarf velocity dispersion excess. Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is ubiquitous in nanoscale science allowing the observation of features in real space down to the angstrom resolution. The scanning nature of SPM, wherein a sharp tip rasters the surface during which a physical setpoint is maintained via a control feedback loop, often implies that the image is subject to drift effects, leading to distortion of the resulting image. While there are \emph{in-operando} methods to compensate for the drift, correcting the residual linear drift in obtained images is often neglected. In this paper, we present a reciprocal space-based technique to compensate the linear drift in atomically-resolved scanning probe microscopy images without distinction of the fast and slow scanning directions; furthermore this method does not require the set of SPM images obtained for the different scanning directions. Instead, the compensation is made possible by the a priori knowledge of the lattice parameters. We investigate the feasibility of epitaxial growth of a three-dimensional semiconductor on a two-dimensional substrate. In particular, we report for the first time on molecular beam epitaxy growth of cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum wells on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The presence of the quantum wells is confirmed by photoluminescence measurements conducted at helium temperatures. Growth of quantum wells on two dimensional, almost perfectly flat hBN appears to be very different from growth on bulk substrates, in particular it requires 70-100$^\circ$C lower temperatures., Comment: submitted to ACS Omega, 7 pages, 8 figures

The idea of partial compositeness (PC) in Composite Higgs models offers an attractive means to explain the flavour hierarchies observed in nature. In this talk, predictions of a minimal UV realisation of PC, considering each Standard-Model (SM) fermion to mix linearly with a bound state consisting of a new scalar and a new fermion, are presented, taking into account the dynamical emergence of the composites. The chiral crossover of QCD at finite temperature and vanishing baryon density turns into a second order phase transition if lighter than physical quark masses are considered. If this transition occurs sufficiently close to the physical point, its universal critical behaviour would largely control the physics of the QCD phase transition. We quantify the size of this region in QCD using functional approaches, both Dyson-Schwinger equations and the functional renormalisation group. The latter allows us to study both critical and non-critical effects on an equal footing, facilitating a precise determination of the scaling regime. We find that the physical point is far away from the critical region. Importantly, we show that the physics of the chiral crossover is dominated by soft modes even far beyond the critical region. While scaling functions determine all thermodynamic properties of the system in the critical region, the order parameter potential is the relevant quantity away from it. We compute this potential in QCD using the functional renormalisation group and Dyson-Schwinger equations and provide a simple parametrisation for phenomenological applications., Comment: 7+8 pages, 5+4 figures

We study the QCD equation of state and other thermodynamic observables including the isentropic trajectories and the speed of sound. These observables are of eminent importance for the understanding of experimental results in heavy ion collisions and also provide a QCD input for studies of the timeline of heavy-ion-collisions with hydrodynamical simulations. They can be derived from the quark propagator whose gap equation is solved within a minimal approximation to the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD at finite temperature and density. This minimal approximation aims at a combination of computational efficiency and simplification of the truncation scheme while maintaining quantitative precision. This minimal DSE scheme is confronted and benchmarked with results for correlation functions and observables from first principles QCD lattice at vanishing density and quantitative functional approaches at finite density., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We compute the bound state properties of three-dimensional scalar $\phi^4$ theory in the broken phase. To this end, we extend the recently developed technique of spectral Dyson-Schwinger equations to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation and determine the bound state spectrum. We employ consistent truncations for the two-, three- and four-point functions of the theory that recover the scaling properties in the infinite coupling limit. Our result for the mass of the lowest-lying bound state in this limit agrees very well with lattice determinations., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures

It has been observed that several Milky Way (MW) satellite dwarf galaxies are distributed along a coherent planar distribution known as the Vast Polar Structure (VPOS). Here we investigate whether MW satellites located on the VPOS have different physical and orbital properties from those not associated with it. Using the proper motion measurements of the MW satellites from the \textit{Gaia} mission and literature values for their observational parameters, we first discriminate between systems that may or may not be associated with the VPOS, and then compare their chemical and dynamical properties. Comparing the luminosity distributions of the on-plane and off-plane samples, we find an excess of bright satellites observed on the VPOS. Despite this luminosity gap, we do not observe a significant preference for on-plane and off-plane systems to follow different scaling relations. The on-plane systems also show a striking pattern in their radial velocities and orbital phases: co-orbiting satellites are almost all approaching their pericenters, while both counter-orbiting satellites are leaving their last pericenters. This contrasts with the more random distribution of the off-plane sample. The on-plane systems also tend to have the lowest orbital energies for a given value of angular momentum. These results are robust to the assumed MW potential, even in the case of a potential perturbed by the arrival of a massive LMC. Considering them a significant property of the VPOS, we explore several scenarios, all related to the late accretion of satellite systems, which interpret the VPOS as a young structure. We hypothesise that the VPOS formed as a result of the accretion of a group of dwarf galaxies. As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 hours. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent. We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared data: large bodies are too bright for WISE mission. Therefore, we recently launched a campaign among stellar occultation observers, to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity. The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to stellar occultations resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters. Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Such well-determined and scaled asteroid shapes will, e.g. constitute a solid basis for density determinations when coupled with mass information. Foundation models have brought changes to the landscape of machine learning, demonstrating sparks of human-level intelligence across a diverse array of tasks. However, a gap persists in complex tasks such as causal inference, primarily due to challenges associated with intricate reasoning steps and high numerical precision requirements. In this work, we take a first step towards building causally-aware foundation models for treatment effect estimations. We propose a novel, theoretically justified method called Causal Inference with Attention (CInA), which utilizes multiple unlabeled datasets to perform self-supervised causal learning, and subsequently enables zero-shot causal inference on unseen tasks with new data. This is based on our theoretical results that demonstrate the primal-dual connection between optimal covariate balancing and self-attention, facilitating zero-shot causal inference through the final layer of a trained transformer-type architecture. We demonstrate empirically that CInA effectively generalizes to out-of-distribution datasets and various real-world datasets, matching or even surpassing traditional per-dataset methodologies. These results provide compelling evidence that our method has the potential to serve as a stepping stone for the development of causal foundation models.

The neutron emission in projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies was studied with the Large-Area-Neutron-Detector LAND coupled to the ALADIN forward spectrometer at the GSI Schwerionen-Synchrotron (SIS). Stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La beams with an incident energy of 600 MeV/nucleon were used to explore the N/Z dependence of the identified neutron source. A cluster-recognition algorithm is applied for identifying individual particles within the hit distributions registered with LAND. The obtained momentum distributions are extrapolated over the full phase space occupied by the neutrons from the projectile-spectator source. The mean multiplicities of spectator neutrons reach values of up to about 11 and depend strongly on the isotopic composition of the projectile. An effective source temperature of T \approx 2-5 MeV, monotonically increasing with decreasing impact parameter, is deduced from the transverse momentum distributions. For the interpretation of the data, calculations with the statistical multifragmentation model were performed. The variety of excited projectile spectators assumed to decay statistically is represented by an ensemble of excited sources with parameters determined previously from the fragment production observed in the same experiments. The obtained agreement is very satisfactory for more peripheral collisions where, according to the model, neutrons are mainly emitted during the secondary decays of excited fragments. The neutron multiplicity in more central collisions is underestimated, indicating that other sources besides the modeled statistical breakup contribute to the observed neutron yield. We derive the quantum effective action and the respective quantum equations of motion from multi-graviton correlation functions in asymptotically safe quantum gravity. The fully momentum-dependent couplings of three- and four-graviton scatterings are computed within the functional renormalisation group approach and the effective action is reconstructed from these vertices. The resulting quantum equations of motion are solved numerically for quantum black hole geometries. Importantly, the black hole solutions show signatures of quantum gravity outside the classical horizon, which manifest in the behaviour of the temporal and radial components of the metric. In this contribution, we discuss the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity by evaluating the correlation functions of dynamical metric fluctuations. This is done with a functional renormalisation group approach that disentangles dynamical metric fluctuations from the background metric. We detail the derivation of the respective flow equations on space-time manifolds with Euclidean and Lorentzian signatures and discuss the diffeomorphism symmetry constraints on the flow as well as the convergence of systematic vertex expansion schemes. We then proceed with a comprehensive review of results of momentum-dependent correlation functions at vanishing cutoff scale, the phase structure of the asymptotically safe Standard Model, and spectral properties of asymptotically safe gravity from direct computations in space-times with Lorentzian signatures such as the graviton spectral function., Comment: 47 pages, 15 figures. QCD at large density reveals a rich phase structure, ranging from a potential critical end point and inhomogeneous phases or moat regimes to color superconducting ones with competing order effects. Resolving this region in the phase diagram of QCD with functional approaches requires a great deal of quantitative reliability, already for a qualitative access. In the present work, we systematically extend the functional renormalisation group approach to low energy QCD by setting up a fully self-consistent approximation scheme in a low energy effective quark-meson theory. In this approximation, all pointlike multi-scattering events of the mesonic pion and the sigma mode are taken into account in terms of an effective potential as well as all higher quark-antiquark-mesonic scattering orders. As a first application we compute the phase structure of QCD including its low temperature - large chemical potential part. The quantitative reliability of the approximation and systematic extensions are also discussed.

We study a one-dimensional two-component Fermi gas in a harmonic trapping potential using finite temperature lattice quantum Monte Carlo methods. We are able to compute observables in the canonical ensemble via an efficient projective approach. Results for density profiles, correlations, as well as energy-related observables are presented for systems with up to 80 particles and various temperatures. Our simulations reproduce known numerical results and compare well against available experimental data close to the ground state, while at higher temperature they are benchmarked against the exact solution of the two particle system. This provides an indication that a standard lattice discretization is sufficient to capture the physics of the trapped system. In the special case of a spin-imbalanced gas, we find no sign problem in the parameter ranges studied, allowing access without the need of specialized methods. This includes simulations close to the ground state and at large population imbalance, where we present results for density correlations, indicating pairing at finite total momentum., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are low-mass objects that form within tidal and/or collisional debris ejected from more massive interacting galaxies. We use CO($1-0$) observations from ALMA and integral-field spectroscopy from MUSE to study molecular and ionized gas in three TDGs: two around the collisional galaxy NGC 5291 and one in the late-stage merger NGC 7252. The CO and H$\alpha$ emission is more compact than the HI emission and displaced from the HI dynamical center, so these gas phases cannot be used to study the internal dynamics of TDGs. We use CO, HI, and H$\alpha$ data to measure the surface densities of molecular gas ($\Sigma_{\rm mol}$), atomic gas ($\Sigma_{\rm atom}$) and star-formation rate ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), respectively. We confirm that TDGs follow the same spatially integrated $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}-\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ relation of regular galaxies, where $\Sigma_{\rm gas} = \Sigma_{\rm mol} + \Sigma_{\rm atom}$, even though they are HI dominated. We find a more complex behaviour in terms of the spatially resolved $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}-\Sigma_{\rm mol}$ relation on sub-kpc scales. The majority ($\sim$60$\%$) of SF regions in TDGs lie on the same $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}-\Sigma_{\rm mol}$ relation of normal spiral galaxies but show a higher dispersion around the mean. The remaining fraction of SF regions ($\sim$40$\%$) lie in the starburst region and are associated with the formation of massive super star clusters, as shown by Hubble Space Telescope images. We conclude that the local SF activity in TDGs proceeds in a hybrid fashion, with some regions comparable to normal spiral galaxies and others to extreme starbursts., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We estimate the nuclear saturation density and the binding energy in a nuclear liquid from precision data on the coupling of the four-quark scattering vertex in the vector channel, computed within functional QCD. We show that this coupling is directly related to the density-density potential and the latter is used for the estimates. In a first qualitative computation we find a saturation density of 0.2 fm${}^{-3}$ and an upper bound for the binding energy of 21.5 MeV, in agreement with the empirical values of 0.16 fm${}^{-3}$ and 16 MeV, respectively. We also use the scattering vertex for constructing an emergent low-energy effective theory for the liquid gas transition from QCD correlation function, whose coupling parameters can be determined within QCD. Paw{\l}owski and Winter's hyperbit theory, proposed in 2012, presented itself as an alternative to quantum theory, suggesting novel ways of redefining entanglement and classical communication paradigms. This research undertakes a meticulous reevaluation of hyperbit theory, uncovering significant operational constraints that question its equivalence with quantum mechanics. Crucially, the supposition that hyperbit theory and quantum theory are equivalent relies on the receiver having unattainable additional knowledge about the sender's laboratory, indicating that the work by Pawlowski and Winter is incorrect. This study accentuates the constraints of hyperbits in information processing and sheds light on the superiority of quantum communication, thereby advancing the investigation at the intersection of classical and quantum communication.

We present Carnot, a leader-based Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocol that is responsive and operates under the partially synchronous model. Responsive BFT consensus protocols exhibit wire-speed operation and deliver instantaneous finality, thereby addressing a fundamental need in distributed systems. A key challenge in scaling these protocols has been the computational complexity associated with authenticator verification. We demonstrate that Carnot effectively addresses this bottleneck by adeptly streamlining the verification and aggregation of $O(log(N))$ authenticators per node. This notable advancement marks a substantial improvement over the prevailing $O(N)$ state-of-the-art approaches. Leveraging this inherent property, Carnot demonstrates its capacity to seamlessly scale to networks comprising tens to hundreds of thousands of nodes. We envision Carnot as a critical stride towards bridging the gap between classical BFT consensus mechanisms and blockchain technology.

We investigate the impact of a critical end point (CEP) on the experimentally accessible baryon number fluctuations of different orders. By now, its potential location has been constrained fairly accurately within first principles functional QCD, together with the location of the chiral crossover line and further thermodynamic observables. This information is incorporated in an advanced QCD-assisted low energy effective theory which is used for the computation of baryon number fluctuations at the chemical freeze-out. This computation also takes care of global baryon number conservation at larger density, where the system changes from grand-canonical to canonical statistics. We observe a prominent peak structure, whose amplitude depends on the location of the CEP, while its position is more sensitive to the location of the freeze-out curve. We compute the equation of state, the gap as well as the density fluctuations of a two-component superfluid Fermi gas over the whole range of BEC-BCS crossover at vanishing temperature within the functional renormalisation group approach. With an improved understanding of the relation between density and chemical potential, already a rather simple truncation yields a very good quantitative agreement with experimental data and theoretical results, in particular in the unitarity limit and on the BEC side. The current approach utilises higher order density fluctuations as a fundamental building block for the computation of the density as a function of the chemical potential. This circumvents the fine-tuning problem of the density-related fundamental parameters on the microscopic level that has been observed in previous approaches. Bayesian causal discovery aims to infer the posterior distribution over causal models from observed data, quantifying epistemic uncertainty and benefiting downstream tasks. However, computational challenges arise due to joint inference over combinatorial space of Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) and nonlinear functions. Despite recent progress towards efficient posterior inference over DAGs, existing methods are either limited to variational inference on node permutation matrices for linear causal models, leading to compromised inference accuracy, or continuous relaxation of adjacency matrices constrained by a DAG regularizer, which cannot ensure resulting graphs are DAGs. In this work, we introduce a scalable Bayesian causal discovery framework based on a combination of stochastic gradient Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SG-MCMC) and Variational Inference (VI) that overcomes these limitations. Our approach directly samples DAGs from the posterior without requiring any DAG regularization, simultaneously draws function parameter samples and is applicable to both linear and nonlinear causal models. To enable our approach, we derive a novel equivalence to the permutation-based DAG learning, which opens up possibilities of using any relaxed gradient estimator defined over permutations. To our knowledge, this is the first framework applying gradient-based MCMC sampling for causal discovery. Nuclear collisions at sufficiently high energies are expected to produce far-from-equilibrium matter with a high density of gluons at early times. We show gauge condensation, which occurs as a consequence of the large density of gluons. To identify this condensation phenomenon, we construct two local gauge-invariant observables that carry the macroscopic zero mode of the gauge condensate. The first order parameter for gauge condensation investigated here is the correlator of the spatial Polyakov loop. We also consider, for the first time, the correlator of the gauge invariant scalar field, associated to the exponent of the Polyakov loop. Using real-time lattice simulations of classical-statistical $SU(2)$ gauge theory, we find gauge condensation on a system-size dependent time scale $t_{\text{cond}} \sim L^{1/\zeta}$ with a universal scaling exponent $\zeta$. Furthermore, we suggest an effective theory formulation describing the dynamics using one of the order parameters identified. We build a machine learning model to detect correlations in a three-qubit system using a neural network trained in an unsupervised manner on randomly generated states. The network is forced to recognize separable states, and correlated states are detected as anomalies. Quite surprisingly, we find that the proposed detector performs much better at distinguishing a weaker form of quantum correlations, namely, the quantum discord, than entanglement. In fact, it has a tendency to grossly overestimate the set of entangled states even at the optimal threshold for entanglement detection, while it underestimates the set of discordant states to a much lesser extent. In order to illustrate the nature of states classified as quantum-correlated, we construct a diagram containing various types of states -- entangled, as well as separable, both discordant and non-discordant. We find that the near-zero value of the recognition loss reproduces the shape of the non-discordant separable states with high accuracy, especially considering the non-trivial shape of this set on the diagram. The network architecture is designed carefully: it preserves separability, and its output is equivariant with respect to qubit permutations. We show that the choice of architecture is important to get the highest detection accuracy, much better than for a baseline model that just utilizes a partial trace operation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, and extra 5 pages of supplementary materials

Composite Higgs extensions of the Standard Model provide an explanation for the large hierarchies between the Yukawa couplings. We study their realisation in the context of fundamental partial compositeness where the Standard Model fermions mix linearly with bound states of the new sector, consisting of a fermion and a scalar. The properties of this composite are unravelled with the functional renormalisation group approach using dynamically emergent composites. Flattened and kinematically correlated planes of dwarf satellite galaxies have been observed in the Local Volume. The slinging out of satellites during host galaxy mergers has been suggested as a formation mechanism for these peculiar structures. We statistically examined the impact of major mergers on present-time satellite systems for the first time in a full cosmological context using the IllustrisTNG suite of hydrodynamic simulations. Mergers with mass ratios above 1/3 generally have a negligible or adverse impact on the phase-space correlation of observationally motivated satellites. Even high-angular momentum mergers are inefficient at slinging satellites outward due to the extended nature of simulated satellite distributions. Furthermore, any potential merger imprint is partially washed out by post-merger accretion of satellites, while satellites bound to the merging haloes since the merger's beginning are disrupted and stripped of mass - minimising the merger's influence on the present-time distribution of the most massive satellites after 2-5 Gyr. Constraining our sample to satellites bound to their host throughout the full duration of their system's last merger, we recover no particular improvement in their phase-space correlation. Instead, such participant satellites experience a contraction of their radial distribution during and after the merger, resulting in smaller absolute plane heights (but comparable axis ratios). Overall, major mergers do not appear to form correlated planes in a statistical sample. Mergers that efficiently transfer their angular momentum to satellite distributions can marginally enhance their phase-space correlation, but cannot form highly flattened and orbitally coherent configurations as observed in our local Universe., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gaia EDR3 has provided proper motions of Milky Way (MW) dwarf galaxies with an unprecedented accuracy, which allows us to investigate their orbital properties. We found that the total energy and angular momentum of MW dwarf galaxies are much larger than that of MW K-giant stars, Sagittarius stream stars and globular clusters. It suggests that many MW dwarf galaxies have had a recent infall into the MW halo. We confirmed that MW dwarf galaxies lie near their pericenters, which suggests that they do not behave like satellite systems derived from Lambda-Cold-Dark-Matter cosmological simulations. These new results require revisiting the origin of MW dwarf galaxies, e.g., if they came recently, they were likely to have experienced gas removal due to the ram pressure induced by MW's hot gas, and to be affected by MW tides. We present a general causal generative modelling framework for accurate estimation of high fidelity image counterfactuals with deep structural causal models. Estimation of interventional and counterfactual queries for high-dimensional structured variables, such as images, remains a challenging task. We leverage ideas from causal mediation analysis and advances in generative modelling to design new deep causal mechanisms for structured variables in causal models. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed mechanisms are capable of accurate abduction and estimation of direct, indirect and total effects as measured by axiomatic soundness of counterfactuals., Comment: ICML2023 publication

We investigate the effect of a quench from a one-dimensional gas with strong and repulsive local interactions to a strongly attractive one, known as the super-Tonks-Girardeau effect. By incorporating both an optical lattice and non-local interactions (specifically nearest-neighbor), we discover a previously unexplored phenomenon: the disruption of the state during the quench, but within a specific range of interactions. Our study employs the extended Bose-Hubbard model across various system sizes, starting with analytical results for two atoms and progressing to few-body systems using exact diagonalization, DMRG and TDVP methods. Finally, we use a numerical implementation of the local density approximation for a macroscopic number of atoms. Consistently, our findings unveil a region where the initially self-bound structure expands due to the super-Tonks-Girardeau quench. The fast evaporation provides a tool to characterize the phase diagram in state-of-art experiments exploring the physics of the extended Bose-Hubbard model., Comment: Comments welcome!

We study the statistical properties of a gas of interacting bosons trapped in a box potential in two and three dimensions. Our primary focus is the characteristic temperature $\tchar$, i.e. the temperature at which the fluctuations of the number of condensed atoms (or, in 2D, the number of motionless atoms) is maximal. Using the Fock State Sampling method, we show that $\tchar$ increases due to interaction. In 3D, this temperature converges to the critical temperature in the thermodynamic limit. In 2D we show the general applicability of the method by obtaining a generalized dependence of the characteristic temperature on the interaction strength. The versatile range of applications for two-dimensional (2D) materials has encouraged scientists to further engineer the properties of these materials. This is often accomplished by stacking layered materials into more complex van der Waals heterostructures. A much less popular but technologically promising approach is the alloying of 2D materials with different element compositions. In this work, we demonstrate a first step in manipulating the hBN bandgap in terms of its width and indirect/direct character of the optical transitions. We present a set of aluminum alloyed hexagonal boron nitride (hBAlN) samples that were grown by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) on 2-inch sapphire substrates with different aluminum concentration. Importantly, the obtained samples revealed a sp$^2$-bonded crystal structure. Optical absorption experiments disclosed two strong peaks in the excitonic spectral range with absorption coefficient $\alpha \sim 10^6$ cm$^{-1}$. Their energies correspond very well with the energies of indirect and direct bandgap transitions in hBN. However, they are slightly redshifted. This observation is in agreement with predictions that alloying with Al leads to a decrease of the bandgap energy. The observation of two absorption peaks can be explained in terms of mixing electronic states in the K and M conduction band valleys, which leads to a significant enhancement of the absorption coefficient for indirect transitions.
