Abstract

In this report, we analyse X-ray induced damage of $B_4C$-coated bilayer materials under various irradiation geometries, following the conditions of our experiment performed at the free-electron-laser facility SACLA. We start with the discussion of structural damage in solids and damage threshold doses for the experimental system components: $B_4C$, SiC, Mo and Si. Later, we analyze the irradiation of the experimentally tested coated bilayer systems under two different incidence conditions of a linearly polarized X-ray pulse: (i) grazing incidence, and (ii) normal incidence, in order to compare quantitatively the effect of the pulse incidence on the radiation tolerance of both systems. For that purpose, we propose a simple theoretical model utilizing properties of hard X-ray propagation and absorption in irradiated materials and of the following electron transport. With this model, we overcome the bottleneck problem of large spatial scales, inaccessible for any existing first-principle-based simulation tools due to their computational limitations for large systems. Predictions for damage thresholds obtained with the model agree well with the available experimental data. In particular, they confirm that two coatings tested: 15 nm $B_4C$/20 nm Mo on silicon wafer and 15 nm $B_4C$/50 nm $SiC$ on silicon wafer can sustain X-ray irradiation at the fluences up to $\sim 10 \mu J/\mu m^2$, when exposed to linearly polarized 10 keV X-ray pulse at a grazing incidence angle of 3 mrad. Below we present the corresponding theoretical analysis. Potential applications of our approach for design and radiation tolerance tests of multilayer components within X-ray free-electron-laser optics are indicated.

Abstract

After the successful start of the hard X-ray FEL at SwissFEL in 2016, the soft X-ray FEL ATHOS at SwissFEL is expected to deliver the first beam by end of 2019. This contribution describes the beamlines attached to the FEL and reports on the status and plans for this soft X-ray facility. The ATHOS facility will operate three end stations. Two stations are already defined and are currently in the design and construction phase whereas the third station will be defined in the future. The first station (AMO) is dedicated to Atomic and Molecular physics as well as nonlinear spectroscopy. It is expected to get light in mid 2020. The second station (Furka) is for condensed matter physics. The beamline consists of a grating monochromator and distributes the beam downstream of the grating chamber by means of horizontal deflecting mirrors. Pink and monochromatic beam operation is foreseen at all branches. The monochromator uses variable line-spacing gratings on spherical substrates with a variable included angle and operates without an entrance slit. Its mechanics is based on the SX-700 design, but with the grating facing up and the mirror facing down. Abstract

The Athos line will cover the photon energy range from 250 to 1900 eV and will operate in parallel to the hard X-ray line Aramis of SwissFEL. The paper will describe the current layout of the Athos FEL line starting from the fast kicker magnet followed by the dogleg transfer line, the small linac and the 16 APPLE undulators. From there the photon beam passes through the photonics front end and the beamline optics before reaching the experimental stations AMO and FURKA. The focus of this contribution will be on the two bunch operation commissioning (two bunches in the same RF macropulse), which started in 2018, and the characterization of the major components like the APPLE X undulator UE38, the CHIC chicane and the dechirper. Abstract

We present the main specifications of the newly constructed Swiss Free Electron Laser, SwissFEL, and explore its potential impact on ultrafast science. In light of recent achievements at current X-ray free electron lasers, we discuss the potential territory for new scientific breakthroughs offered by SwissFEL in Chemistry, Biology, and Materials Science, as well as nonlinear X-ray science.

Abstract

The physics and chemistry of liquid solutions play a central role in science, and our understanding of life on Earth. Unfortunately, key tools for interrogating aqueous systems, such as infrared and soft X-ray spectroscopy, cannot readily be applied because of strong absorption in water. Here we use gas dynamic forces to generate free-flowing, sub-micron, liquid sheets which are 2 orders of magnitude thinner than anything previously reported. Optical, infrared and X-ray spectroscopies are used to characterize the sheets, which are found to be tunable in thickness from over 1 micron down to less than 20 nanometers, which corresponds to fewer than 100 water molecules thick. At this thickness, aqueous sheets can readily transmit photons across the spectrum, leading to potentially transformative applications in infrared, X-ray, electron spectroscopies and beyond. The ultrathin sheets are stable for days in vacuum, and we demonstrate their use at free-electron laser and synchrotron light sources.

Abstract

Employing X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and momentum‐resolved density fluctuation (MRDF) theory, the magnetic and electronic properties of ultrathin NdNiO3 (NNO) film in proximity to ferromagnetic (FM) La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) layer are investigated. The experimental data shows the direct magnetic coupling between the nickelate film and the manganite layer which causes an unusual ferromagnetic (FM) phase in NNO. Moreover, it is shown the metal–insulator transition in the NNO layer, identified by an abrupt suppression of ARPES spectral weight near the Fermi level (EF), is absent. This observation suggests that the insulating AFM ground state is quenched in proximity to the FM layer. Combining the experimental data (XMCD and AREPS) with the momentum‐resolved density fluctuation calculation (MRDF) reveals a direct link between the MIT and the magnetic orders in NNO systems. This work demonstrates that the proximity layer order can be broadly used to modify physical properties and enrich the phase diagram of RENiO3 (RE = rare‐earth element). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The interaction between phonons and high-energy excitations of electronic origin in cuprates and their role in the superconducting mechanisms is still controversial. Here we use coherent vibrational time-domain spectroscopy together with density functional and dynamical mean-field theory calculations to establish a direct link between the c-axis phonon modes and the in-plane electronic charge excitations in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7. The nonequilibrium Raman tensor is measured by means of the broadband “coherent-phonon” response in pump-probe experiments and is qualitatively described by our model using density functional theory in the frozen-phonon approximation plus single-band dynamical mean-field theory to account for the electronic correlations. The major outcome of our experimental and theoretical study is to establish the link between out-of-plane copper ion displacements and the in-plane electronic correlations, and to estimate at a few unit cells the correlation length of the associated phonon mode. The approach introduced here could help in revealing the complex interplay between fluctuations of different nature and spatial correlation in several strongly correlated materials.

Abstract

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were used for studying the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in thick films of isonicotinic acid evaporated onto rutile TiO2(110). The presence of non-hydrogen-bonded nitrogen atoms in the surface layer may be responsible for the origin of the surface core-level shift.

Abstract

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy it is revealed that in the vicinity of optimal doping the electronic structure of La2−xSrxCuO4 cuprate undergoes an electronic reconstruction associated with a wave vector qa=(π,0). The reconstructed Fermi surface and folded band are distinct to the shadow bands observed in BSCCO cuprates and in underdoped La2−xSrxCuO4 with x≤0.12, which shift the primary band along the zone diagonal direction. Furthermore, the folded bands appear only with qa=(π,0) vector, but not with qb=(0,π). We demonstrate that the absence of qb reconstruction is not due to the matrix-element effects in the photoemission process, which indicates the fourfold symmetry is broken in the system.

Abstract

The RIXS Manipulator (RIXS = Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering) is a further development of the Carving Manipulator. The carving manipulator has six independent degree of freedom. (Three translations and three rotations). All three rotations are exactly in the middle of the sample surface. The head of the manipulator is in UHV and the sample can be cooled down to 10K. For the RIXS manipulator there is a new requirement to have a field of view from 0-180°. There are mainly two parts in the carving manipulator that set the probe in the shadow of the beam at small angles. - A bellow - The bearings To solve these problems we shifted the bellow behind the pivot point. This give some strange movements of the bellows and we had to analyse this in a separate test installation. For the bearings, we developed a goniometer bearing with ceramic bearing shells. Abstract

The Photo-Emission and Atomic Resolution Laboratory (PEARL) is a new soft X-ray beamline and surface science laboratory at the Swiss Light Source. PEARL is dedicated to the structural characterization of local bonding geometry at surfaces and interfaces of novel materials, in particular of molecular adsorbates, nanostructured surfaces, and surfaces of complex materials. The main experimental techniques are soft X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoelectron diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Photoelectron diffraction in angle-scanned mode measures bonding angles of atoms near the emitter atom, and thus allows the orientation of small molecules on a substrate to be determined. In energy scanned mode it measures the distance between the emitter and neighboring atoms; for example, between adsorbate and substrate. STM provides complementary, real-space information, and is particularly useful for comparing the sample quality with reference measurements. In this article, the key features and measured performance data of the beamline and the experimental station are presented. Abstract

The Photon Arrival and Length Monitor (PALM), a THz streak camera device developed by PSI for non-destructive hard x-ray measurements of photon pulse length and arrival time versus a pump laser*, was brought to the SACLA XFEL** in Japan in a cross-calibration temporal diagnostics campaign after an initial experiment where only the PALM was being used***. The device was used with 9 keV pink beam and a 9.0 and 8.8 keV two-color mode, successfully measuring the arrival time and pulse lengths for several different FEL operating conditions. The device has shown itself to be very robust and transparent to the FEL beam, with temporal characterization accuracies of 15 fs or better. SwissFEL will employ two such devices at the end stations for use by both operators and experimenters to improve the operation of the FEL and to better interpret experimental data. Abstract

The two Aramis beamlines at SwissFEL are currently under commissioning, first pilot experiments have already been carried out. In total we have 10 mirror systems, 6 offset mirrors and 4 mirrors in KB [1] configuration. We use bilayer mirror coatings to handle the single shot damage challenge at FELs. The optics has to keep the coherence of the FEL pulses. We use flat mirrors with figure errors on the single nm level in two-actuator mechanical bender systems. The vertically deflecting KB mirrors have a polished-in gravity sag compensation. The performance of the mirror systems has been verified with X-rays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SwissFEL is a free electron laser at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland, which became operational by the end of 2017. Initially, it will host two undulators ARAMIS and ATHOS. The former is operational and generating tender to hard x-rays (2 to 12 keV), whilst the latter is in the process of being installed and will provide soft x-rays ranging from 0.2 to 2 keV. Each undulator will eventually serve three different endstations. Recent Genesis [1] simulations have shown that the ATHOS branch can operate in a high-power mode, which will increase the photon pulse energy by one order of magnitude to 8.1 mJ at 250 eV. This will lead to peak beam intensities inside the frontend, which will damage any normal incidence absorber. To overcome this issue a photon beam diffusor is proposed in this paper. At the core of this instrument is a bent rod, which is positioned at a grazing angle relative to the incident beam, so that it acts like a defocussing mirror, reflecting most of the incident power and increasing the divergence of the reflected beam. Due to the increased divergence, the beam diameter is increased by a factor of 10 after propagating over a few meters, thus reducing the peak intensity by a factor of 100 to a level, which can be safely absorbed by a normal incidence absorber.
