Abstract

During the Early Cretaceous charophyte assemblages were dominated by the family Clavatoraceae, especially in low latitudinal lakes from the Peri-Tethyan basins. In higher latitudes, however, charophyte assemblages were mainly formed by early characeans associated to a reduced diversity of clavatoraceans. The charophyte studied assemblages from the Los Adobes Formation in the Canadon Asfalto Basin (central Patagonia) are unique as they are exclusively composed of several species belonging to the early characean genus Mesochara, which is considered the ancestor of modern species of the subfamily Charoideae. These assemblages show well-preserved gyrogonites and unusual species richness for this genus, including Mesochara maruchoensis, aff. Mesochara harrisii, Mesochara stipitata and Mesochara adobensis sp. nov. Two of these species display a worldwide distribution (M.harrisii and M. stipitata), while two (M. maruchoensis and M. adobensis sp. nov.) were only recorded in Patagonia, Argentina, being considered endemic to this region. The charophyte assemblages of the Los Adobes Formation represent autochthonous floras of alkaline ponds or small lakes in distal fluvial floodplains, developed under dry climatic conditions, as indicated by sedimentary facies analysis of the studied beds, and taphonomic and palaeoecological analyses of charophytes and associated fossil groups, such as palynomorphs and ostracods. This type of charophyte assemblage predates by about 30 million years the first floras composed exclusively of members of the subfamily Charoideae, which radiated worldwide in the Late Cretaceous and continued to dominate the charophyte floras during the Cenozoic until the present.

96. Volcanic ash resuspension in Patagonia: numerical simulations and observations

An accurate forecasting of the phenomenon, to support Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs) and civil aviation management, depends on adapting volcanic ash transport and dispersion models to include specific ash emission schemes. Few studies have attempted to model the mechanisms of emission and transport of windblown volcanic ash, and a systematic study of observed cases has not been carried out yet. This manuscript combines numerical simulations along with a variety of observational data to examine the general features of ash resuspension events in northern Patagonia following the 2011 Cordón Caulle eruption (Chile). The associated outcomes provide new insights into the spatial distribution of sources, frequency of events, transport patterns, seasonal and diurnal variability, and spatio-temporal distribution of airborne ash. A novel modelling approach based on the coupling between Advanced Research core of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF-ARW) and FALL3D models is presented, with various model improvements that allow overcoming some limitations in previous ash resuspension studies. Outcomes show the importance of integrating source information based on field measurements (e.g., deposit grain size distribution and particle density). We provide evidence of a strong diurnal and seasonal variability associated with the ash resuspension activity in Patagonia. According to the modelled emission fluxes, ash resuspension activity was found to be significantly more intense during daytime hours. Satellite observations and numerical simulations strongly suggest that major emission sources of resuspended ash were distributed across distal areas (>100 km from the vent) of the Patagonian steppe, covered by a thin layer of f, Leonardo Mingari thanks CONICET for their PhD fellowship. Abstract

International audience; In the first months of 2007, the Aysén region in southern Chile was affected by a crustal seismic swarm. Its largest earthquake (M w 6.2) occurred in April and had its epicenter in Aysén Fjord. Seismic intensities became so high that hundreds of onshore mass movements were triggered, several of which entered into the fjord, resulting in mass transport deposits (MTDs) preserved at the fjord bottom. Here we present a Holocene record of paleo-earthquakes in the previously unstudied Patagonian fjordland based on MTD stratigraphy. High-resolution seismic data retrieved using two different seismic systems (sparker and TOPAS) reveal multiple older MTDs on different stratigraphic levels. Correlation of the seismic stratigraphy with sedimentological data obtained from a long Calypso core (MD07-3117) allows conclusion on the seismic origin of these deposits. Additionally, radiocarbon dating permits constructing an age model, validated by tephrochronology, providing an age for the different MTD levels. We thus present a highly detailed paleoseismological history of the Aysén region, including at least six major Holocene earthquakes, one of which is likely related to a known megathrust earthquake. Other earthquakes are related to activity of the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault Zone (LOFZ), forming the main source of seismic hazard in the area. We can infer a general average recurrence time for LOFZ earthquakes of~2,100 years in the vicinity of Aysén Fjord with clustered events during the early and late Holocene. Finally, we argue that cascading events (causal link between volcanic and seismic events) may be a frequent phenomenon along the LOFZ.

Abstract

Arquitectura aluvial de depósitos piroclásticos retrabajados en cuencas peri-volcánicas: Formación Castillo de la cuenca del Golfo San Jorge, Argentina La distribución espacial de litofacies y asociaciones de litofacies es primordial para entender las variaciones en los estilos fluviales y dimensiones de los canales, los controles externos y el grado de predictibilidad de la arquitectura aluvial de depósitos piroclásticos retrabajados en cuencas peri-volcánicas. Estos aspectos se analizan en este estudio sobre la Formación Castillo (Albiano) de la cuenca del Golfo San Jorge en la Faja Plegada de San Bernardo, un grupo de sierras con orientación N-S, ubicadas 190 km al este de la Cordillera de los Andes. Se conformó un marco estratigráfico detallado basado en 19 secciones estratigráficas y la caracterización de 284 canales fluviales, analizando siete localidades desde el margen norte de la cuenca, a la sección más completa en el extremo sur de la faja plegada. La unidad se dividió en quince litofacies, agrupadas en seis asociaciones de litofacies: (i) planicies de inundación subaérea y subácuea, (ii) planicie proximal, (iii) canales fluviales de baja sinuosidad y entrelazados, (iv) depósitos de flujos de detritos, (v) flujos no encauzados, (vi) niveles de ceniza retrabajada. Las variaciones en la proporción de asociaciones de litofacies y en las dimensiones de los depósitos clásticos están relacionadas a aporte variable de agua y partículas volcaniclásticas en redes de drenaje locales o regionales desarrolladas en areas de variable tasa de subsidencia. Pese al control del volcanismo sobre la composición de los depósitos volcaniclásticos, los rasgos característicos del sistema fluvial preservado en esta cuenca peri-volcánica fueron mayormente establecidos por procesos intracuencales.
