Abstract

International audience; When two correlated long-duration stimuli are presented over headphones with different interaural time differences (ITD) and a short onset delay (1?5 ms) between the two stimuli, listeners typically indicate lateralization that is dominated by the ITD of the stimulus that was presented first. This localization dominance, a perceptual outcome of the precedence effect, was measured by Pastore and Braasch for a number of related conditions all based on long-duration noise bursts. Modeling of peripheral and brainstem processing revealed that the results could be explained, to a first approximation, by the extraction of ITDs from the rising slopes of envelope fluctuations in the neural output of the auditory nerve during the onset and ongoing stimulus portions. Based on these modeling outcomes, this presentation will argue that the precedence effect may be conceptualized as instances of observed onset dominance that are integrated across different time scales and levels of auditory processing to form an overall perceived auditory percept that is dominated by the first arriving stimulus.

Abstract

International audience; In 1940, Wallach noted that listeners must integrate two spatial estimates in order to localize sound sources in the world around them. We now understand that the first estimate results from some analysis of auditory spatial cues extracted from interaural differences and spectral patterns across frequency ? the result is an estimate of sound source location relative to the head. To map the auditory spatial estimate into the context of the surrounding environment requires a second estimate of the location of the listener?s head relative to the immediate surroundings. This process can be revealed and studied using a paradigm introduced by Wallach whereby the listener and sound source are both rotated and yet the listener perceives a stationary sound source. Recent experiments at the Spatial Hearing Laboratory at Arizona State University that confirmed and extended the usefulness of this paradigm will be presented and discussed.

Abstract

Background The aim of this study was to define clusters of activity in a population-based cohort during the first 5 years after diagnosis in children with ulcerative colitis [UC] and to identify early prognostic risk factors. Methods All UC patients from the SIGENP IBD registry with a complete follow-up of at least 5 years were included. Active disease was defined every 6 months in the presence of at least one of the following: clinical activity [Paediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index ≥ 35]; endoscopic activity [Mayo score ≥ 1]; faecal calprotectin > 250 µg/g; hospitalization; surgery; or treatment escalation. Formula-based clusters were generated based on four published questionnaire-based activity patterns in adults, plus one additional cluster. Results In total, 226 patients were identified. Forty-two [19%] had moderate–severe chronically active disease, 31 [14%] chronic–intermittent, 75 [33%] quiescent, 54 [24%] active disease in the first 2 years after the diagnosis, then sustained remission, and 24 [11%] a remission in the first 2 years then an active disease. Mild disease onset along with a lower clinical severity not requiring the use of corticosteroids at 6 months were related to a quiescent disease course at the next follow-up (logistic model area under the curve 0.86 [95% confidence interval 0.78–0.94]; positive predictive value 67%; negative predictive value 70%). Eight per cent of patients needed surgery, none in the quiescent group [p = 0.04]. Conclusions More than one-third of children with UC present with a chronically active or intermittent course during the first 5 years of follow-up. A significant group of patients has active disease in the first 2 years and then sustained remission. Interestingly, after initial treatment, one-third of patients have well-controlled disease throughout.

Abstract

Yost and Brown (2013, JASA 133) investigated the ability of listeners to localize two simultaneously presented, independent noises presented over loudspeakers from different locations. These experiments demonstrated that SAM noises that were out of phase at two spatially-separated loudspeakers led to better localization performance than when the SAM noises were in phase at each loudspeaker. Performance was improved at SAM rates as high as 200 Hz as compared to non-SAM noise. Yost and Brown hypothesized that listeners' behavior might be explained as a temporal-spectral (T-S) analysis, and showed that such an approach could, qualitatively, account for some of their behavioral data. This presentation will explore the degree to which a quantitative, biologically-inspired peripheral/brainstem auditory model can predict some of the listener performance presented in Yost and Brown 2013. Specifically, the model structure includes simulated auditory nerve response using the Zilany et al. model (JASA, 2014) with rate-count-based estimation of interaural differences of time and intensity as they occur in the presented stimuli recorded with a KEMAR manikin.
