The problem of closing the nuclear fuel cycle is not only related to the development of new types of nuclear fuel and the operation of fast neutron reactors, but also to the complex schemes for the pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF), which, in turn, require adherence to strict process parameters. In particular, this concerns the operation of the reduction of oxidized SNF mainly by metallic lithium. The paper presents the basic scientific principles and the results of experimental verification of the operation of an electrochemical sensor for measuring oxygen in molten salts in pyrochemical reactors for the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. The sensor design consists of two combined electrochemical cells based on the solid electrolyte ZrO2-Y2O3 with a common reference electrode. The sensor allows continuous measurement of the oxygen activity in the oxide-chloride melt and the partial pressure of oxygen in the gas atmosphere above the melt directly during the process of pyrochemical processing. Experimental verification of the sensor performance was performed in a reactor with LiCl-Li2O melts at a temperature of 650 ° C. The resource of continuous sensor operation exceeded 500 hours, and the number of thermal cycles without destruction was at least 20. The sensor readings were found to depend on the specified Li2O content in the LiCl melt.

Background thoracic trauma is one of the leading causes of death in all age groups and accounts for 25–50 % of all traumatic injuries. With the term lung injury in blunt chest trauma, we identified a spectrum of conditions: lung contusion, pneumothorax and haemothorax. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of arterial blood gas analysis parameters in predicting lung injury in blunt chest trauma. Methods we included 51 patients presenting to the Emergency Department of “C.T.O.” Hospital in Naples [Italy] for blunt chest trauma. The patients were assigned to the Lung Injury Group or to the Non-Lung Injury Group basing on CT scan findings. For each patient, we calculated the alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient [AaDO2], the AaDO2 augmentation, the arterial partial pressure of oxygen deficit [PaO2 Deficit] and the ratio between arterial partial pressure of oxygen and fraction of inspired oxygen [P/F]. Areas under the curve [AUC] and receiver operating characteristic [ROC] curve were used to compare the performance of each different test in relation to the detection of lung injury in blunt chest trauma. Results patients with lung injury had lower oxygen saturation, arterial partial pressure of oxygen, P/F and higher PaO2 Deficit, AaDO2, AaDO2 augmentation than patients without lung injury. PaO2 Deficit, AaDO2 and AaDO2 augmentation showed a good accuracy to predict lung injury in blunt chest trauma. Conclusion our study demonstrates that the combination of different arterial blood gas analysis variables may be a fast approach for identifying patients with lung injury in the setting of blunt chest trauma in the Emergency Department.

Our understanding of how capillary blood flow and oxygen distribute across cortical layers to meet the local metabolic demand is incomplete. We addressed this question by using two-photon imaging of resting-state microvascular oxygen partial pressure (PO2) and flow in the whisker barrel cortex in awake mice. Our measurements in layers I-V show that the capillary red-blood-cell flux and oxygenation heterogeneity, and the intracapillary resistance to oxygen delivery, all decrease with depth, reaching a minimum around layer IV, while the depth-dependent oxygen extraction fraction is increased in layer IV, where oxygen demand is presumably the highest. Our findings suggest that more homogeneous distribution of the physiological observables relevant to oxygen transport to tissue is an important part of the microvascular network adaptation to local brain metabolism. These results will inform the biophysical models of layer-specific cerebral oxygen delivery and consumption and improve our understanding of the diseases that affect cerebral microcirculation.

In the present work the synthesis of materials was carried out by one-step citrate-nitrate method. The optimal synthesis temperature of the powders was chosen on the base of TG-DSC data. Phase nature of the synthesized materials was investigated by XRD and Rietveld refinement data analyzes. The influence of the perovskite phase content in the system of (1-x)Ce0.8Nd0.2O2-δ-xBaCe0.8Nd0.2O3-δ ( x = 0 , 0.25, 0.5 , 0.75 and 1) on the crystallite and particle size of powders and structure properties of ceramics (relative density, porosity, grain size) were investigated. Measurements of the electrical conductivity of materials in a wide ranges of temperatures (550-900 °C) and oxygen partial pressure (10-23≤pO2/atm≤0,21) revealed features of transport in the composite system., В настоящей работе проведен синтез материалов путем одностадийного цитрат-нитратного метода. С привлечением данных ТГ-ДСК анализа установлены оптимальные температуры синтеза порошков. Фазовые особенности синтезированных материалов изучены РФА с привлечением метода Ритвелда. Установлено влияние содержания перовскитной фазы в системе (1-x)Ce0.8Nd0.2O2-δ-xBaCe0.8Nd0.2O3-δ (х=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 и 1) на размеры кристаллитов и частиц порошка. Исследованы керамические свойства (относительная плотность, пористость, размеры зерен) образцов, спеченных при 1500 °С. Исследование электропроводности материалов в широких интервалах температур (550–900 °С) и парциальных давлений кислорода (10-23≤рО2/атм≤0,21) позволило выявить особенности электропереноса в системе (1-x)Ce0.8Nd0.2O2-δ-xBaCe0.8Nd0.2O3-δ.

The modeling and simulation of the cardiorespiratory system has allowed a better understanding of the physiological system behavior to different stimuli and pathologies. Among its main applications stands out the computational tools for diagnosis and clinical treatment support, context in which the knowledge of the computational cost is fundamental for its implementation. The purpose of this work is to develop a comparative evaluation of computational cost of the cardiorespiratory models proposed by Cheng et al. and Albanese et al. under physical activity simulation. The evaluation consisted in the comparison of the computational cost and the prediction error of the physiological variables for each model. Variations in carbon dioxide production between 0.2 and 2.0 l/min were implemented, under the conditions and nominal parameters proposed for each model. The variables compared were mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, frequency of breathing, tidal volume, arterial partial pressure of oxygen and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide. The results evidence that the model proposed by Cheng et al. is the most appropriate for the exercise simulation, due to both the best prediction of variables and the best relationship between complexity and simulation time required. © 2018 IEEE.

The effect of hyperoxygenation with carbogen (95% O 2 + 5% CO 2 ) and 100% oxygen inhalation on partial pressure of oxygen (pO 2 ) of radiation-induced fibrosarcoma (RIF-1) tumor was investigated. RIF-1 tumors were innoculated in C3H mice, and aggregates of oximetry probe, lithium phthalocyanine (LiPc), was implanted in each tumor. A baseline tumor pO 2 was measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) oximetry for 20 minutes in anesthetized mice breathing 30% O 2 and then the gas was switched to carbogen or 100 % oxygen for 60 minutes. These experiments were repeated for 10 days. RIF-1 tumors were hypoxic with a baseline tissue pO 2 of 6.2-8.3 mmHg in mice breathing 30% O 2 . Carbogen and 100% oxygen significantly increased tumor pO 2 on days 1 to 5, with a maximal increase at approximately 32-45 minutes on each day. However, the extent of increase in pO 2 from the baseline declined significantly on day 5 and day 10. The results provide quantitative information on the effect of hyperoxic gas inhalation on tumor pO 2 over the course of 10 days. EPR oximetry can be effectively used to repeatedly monitor tumor pO 2 and test hyperoxic methods for potential clinical applications.

A theoretical generic model describing the mass transfer phenomena between rising gas bubbles and a metal bath has earlier been developed by the present authors, to predict the composition change in the melt as consequence of blowing different oxidant gases. In order to verify the model predictions, a series of experiments involving reactions between Fe-Cr-C melts and different O(2)-CO(2) gas mixtures were carried out. The results showed that the decarburization deviates significantly from thermodynamic paths predicted on the basis of bulk compositions and that the model was able to make reasonably reliable predictions of the changes of chromium and carbon contents in the melt as a function of time. According to the model, the compositions at the vicinity of injection point as well as at the gas-melt interface in the bubble are likely to be far from that in the bulk. The results of the present set of experiments showed, with CO(2) injection, the utilization of the available oxygen for decarburization was higher as compared to O(2) injection in the case of melts containing higher carbon levels (>1mass%). Reverse is the case in low carbon melts. The results also indicate relatively less Cr-losses from the metal bath when CO(2) is used as the oxidant. As the model predictions are found to be reasonably reliable, the model predictions are extended to predict the impact of the variation of different process parameters.

The erbium oxide based water splitting (Eb-WS) cycle was thermodynamically studied by using the HSC Chemistry software and databases. The first step of the Eb-WS cycle involves thermal reduction of Er2 O3, whereas the second step corresponds to the production of H2 via water splitting reaction. Equilibrium compositions associated with the thermal reduction and water splitting steps were determined by performing HSC simulations. Influence of partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) in the inert purge gas on thermal reduction temperature (TH) and equilibrium compositions associated with the solar thermal dissociation of Er2 O3 was identified. Furthermore, energy and exergy analysis of the Eb-WS cycle was carried out to estimate the cycle (?cycle) and solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency (?solar-to-fuel). Simulation results indicate that the ?cycle and ?solar-to-fuel of Eb-WS cycle increase with the decrease in TH. Also, the ? c y c l e and ?solar-to-fuel can be increased further via the recuperation of the heat released by the water splitting reactor and the quench unit. The ?solar-to-fuel of Eb-WS cycle was observed to be equivalent to that of ceria cycle. 2016 Author(s). The results of characterization of TiAlSiON hard coatings deposited on ferric-chromium AISI 430 stainless steel by plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering are presented. The coating with maximum hardness (of 45 GPa) was obtained at the following optimal values of elemental concentrations: Si ~5 at.%, Al ~15 at.%, and Ti ~27 at.%. The elastic modulus of the coating was 590 GPa. The reading of gaseous mixture (Ar-N2) pressure was 1*10-3 Torr and the reading of partial pressure of oxygen (O2) was 1*10-5 Torr. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements showed the presence of Ti(Al)N. High-energy resolved XPS spectra of core levels revealed the formation of Ti-N, Ti-O-N, Si-N and Al-O-N bonds. Транскутанна полярографія є одним з найбільш об’єктивних неінвазивних методів оцінки стану капілярного кровоплину і мікроциркуляції завдяки контролю парціального тиску кисню в підшкірних тканинах. На результати досліджень впливають такі загальні чинники, як вміст кисню в навколишньому середовищі, адекватність центральної гемодинаміки хворого, наявність порушень транспортної функції крові, патологія легеневої системи та місцеві чинники (порушення місцевої мікроциркуляції, набряк тканин, виражений капілярний спазм і т.ін.). Для проведення досліджень, як правило, використовуються одноканальні газоаналізатори. Підвищення інформативної цінності біомедичних досліджень можливе за рахунок застосування як первинного чутливого елемента багатоканальної растрової матриці сенсорів кисню. Використання подібних матриць дасть можливість отримувати інформацію in vivo про розподіл парціального тиску кисню з поверхні шкірного покриву людини, більш повно оцінювати його функціональний стан і в динаміці контролювати вплив можливих лікувальних заходів. Transcutaneous polarography is one of the most objective noninvasive assessment of the capillary blood flow and microcirculation by controlling the oxygen partial pressure in the subcutaneous tissue. The outcome of research is influenced by such common factors as the oxygen content in the ambient air, the adequacy of the central hemodynamics of the patient, the presence of violations of the transport function of the blood, the pathology of the pulmonary system and local factors (disturbance of the local microcirculation, tissue edema, marked capillary spasm, etc.). For research purposes single-channel analyzers are generally used. Increasing the informative value of biomedical research is possible due to the use multi-channel raster array of oxygen sensors as a primary sensor. The use of such matrices will provide information about the in vivo distribution of the partial pressure of oxygen from the surface of the human skin, to more complete assess of its functional state and dynamics to control the impact of possible therapeutic interventions. The paper analyzes the influence of heat sources on the distribution of temperature field of multi-channel raster array of oxygen sensors as the main component of its operation and determines the optimum configuration of such sources. На результаты исследований оказывают влияние такие общие факторы, как содержание кислорода в окружающей среде, адекватность центральной гемодинамики больного, наличие нарушений транспортной функции крови, патология легочной системы и местные факторы (нарушения местной микроциркуляции, отек тканей, выраженный капиллярный спазм и т.д.). Для проведения исследований, как правило, используются одноканальные газоанализаторы. Повышение информативной ценности биомедицинских исследований возможно за счет применения в качестве первичного чувствительного элемента многоканальной растровой матрицы сенсоров кислорода. Использование подобных матриц позволит получать информацию in vivo о распределении парциального давления кислорода с поверхности кожного покрова человека, более полно оценивать его функциональное состояние и в динамике контролировать влияние возможных лечебных мероприятий. В работе проведен анализ влияния источников тепла на распределение температурного поля многоканальной растровой матрицы сенсоров кислорода как главной составляющей ее функционирования и определена оптимальная конфигурация таких источников.

In the article an analysis of errors in determining the parameters of the oxygen sensor (OS) was conducted. Some transcutaneous oxygen sensors (TOS), which have been tested and shown good metrological characteristics were taken. Selection of OS was conducted after analysis of measurement errors of oxygen partial pressure (pO2) and the definition of basic metrological characteristics.Errors of pO2 measurement error in the subcutaneous tissues are divided into two components: the first, relative error of OS measurement is caused by the sensor material, electrolyte and structure; the second, relative error of pO2 measurement is caused by processes that occur directly in subcutaneous tissues (ratio of rates of oxygen delivery to sensor and consumption of oxygen by tissues).The analysis of OS parameters errors is conducted. Researches have shown better use of solid silver anode, which increases the durability and reliability of the sensor work, reduces the relative error of measurement and improves the stability of sensor characteristics.Ref. 4, fig. 3, tab 1., В статье проводится анализ погрешностей определения параметров сенсора кислорода (СК). В роботі проводилося дослідження різних чинників, які впливають на метрологічні характеристики сенсору. Підвищення метрологічних характеристик приладів може бути досягнуто при використанні імпульсних методів поляризації електродів сенсорів. Новизна роботи полягає в застосуванні імпульсної поляризації сенсорів кисню та розробці нових методів обробки вихідних сигналів з метою підвищення метрологічних характеристик приладів. Досліджено кінетику процесів відновлення кисню на катодах сенсорів при поляризації імпульсною напругою. Застосування нових методів поляризації приводить до мінімального впливу роботи сенсора на рівноважні процеси в біологічних об’єктах, що підвищує точність вимірювання та забезпечує швидку реакцію приладу на зміну впливу зовнішніх чинників. The research of different factors influencing on the metrological characteristics of the sensor was conducted in the paper. The elevation of the devices’ metrological characteristics can be achieved by using pulsed methods of polarization of sensors’ electrodes. Novelty of work consists in application of pulse polarization of sensors of oxygen and development of new methods of processing of target signals for the purpose of increase of metrological characteristics of devices. Kinetics of the processes of oxygen reduction on sensors’ cathode under polarization of the pulse voltage is researched. Application of the new methods of polarization leads to minimal influence on the work of sensor on equilibrium processes in biological objects which increases accuracy of measurement and provides quick reaction of the device on the alteration of the effect of external factors. В работе проводились исследования различных факторов, влияющих на метрологические характеристики сенсора. Повышение метрологических характеристик приборов может быть достигнуто при использовании импульсных методов поляризации электродов сенсоров. Новизна работы заключается в применении импульсной поляризации сенсоров кислорода и разработке новых методов обработки выходных сигналов с целью повышения метрологических характеристик приборов. Исследована кинетика процессов восстановления кислорода на катодах сенсоров при поляризации импульсным напряжением. Применение новых методов поляризации приводит к минимальному влиянию работы сенсора на равновесные процессы в биологических объектах, что повышает точность измерения и обеспечивает быструю реакцию прибора на изменение воздействия внешних факторов.

Oxy-coal combustion, in which air is replaced by an O2/ CO2 mixture, is one of the few technologies that may allow CO2 capture and sequestration technologies to be applied to existing coal-fired boilers. One issue of interest is to understand and predict the effects of near-burner-zone environment, now consisting of O2 and CO2 instead of O2 and N2, on flame stability. This dissertation is directed towards understanding how the composition of the coal transport medium (primary CO2 and O2) affects the ignition standoff distance in 40kW coaxial turbulent diffusion, oxy-coal flames, supported in a specially designed combustion test rig, rated at 100kW. The focus is on mechanisms of interaction between turbulent mixing in coaxial jets and coal particle ignition, rather than on each physical or chemical process taken individually.

Experiments were undertaken to determine the relationship between evoked spinal cord potential (ESP) and the partial pressure of oxygen in tissue in the epidural space (E-pO2) during aortic clamping. Eighteen adult mongrel dogs were studied as follows. In group I (n = 6), the descending thoracic aorta was clamped partially at the proximal site for 15 min to maintain the distal arterial pressure at 60, 40, and 20 mmHg consecutively at 15 min intervals. In group II (n = 6), the descending thoracic aorta was clamped proximally for 30 min. In group III (n = 6), the descending thoracic aorta was cross-clamped at proximal and distal sites for 30 min. Postoperative complete paraplegia was observed in 4 of 6 dogs in group III, but none in group II. The change in ESP with aorta cross-clamping was very mild in groups I and II. Transient increases and decreases in the ESP amplitude were observed in group III. The decrease of E-pO2 correlated well with the distal arterial pressure, and a rapid return to baseline of the E-pO2 was observed after declamping. The E-pO2 changed in response to spinal ischemia more rapidly than did ESP in all groups. The critical level of E-pO2 was 50 mmHg or a 40% decrease from baseline. Because the ESP reflects spinal function and the E-pO2 reflects spinal blood pressure, we propose that combined recording of ESP and E-pO2 would improve spinal monitoring during thoracic aortic surgery.

International audience; Changes in the surface area of anatase TiO2 were investigated at 690 K as a function of the gas composition in mixtures of hydrogen chloride, water vapor, and oxygen. The chlorine content on the catalyst support was not dependent on the annealing time, which indicates that the adsorption equilibrium is reached very quickly. The kinetics of surface area were obtained as a function of partial pressure of HCI (from 0.1 to 40 kPa), water vapor (from 0.05 to 10 kPa), and oxygen (from 0.4 to 20 kPa). A mathematical expression for the rate of surface area loss was obtained which includes the partial pressure of water and the chlorine content at the surface of anatase.
