International audience; In this paper, I explore the articulation between discursive constructions related to a subalternization of subjects internal to society and the production of contemporary metropolises. My analysis of a condition of "metropolitan subalternity", resulting from my doctoral research, fits into postcolonial and subaltern studies. In the process of hegemonic production of the city, the dominant groups use popular practices as an argument of delegitimization of the poor. Since the narrative is an essential instrument of what I have called "globalised urban planning", it is through this that the discourse on the city spreads and takes its delegitimizing force. I analyse this urban version of an orientalist type of domination, and how this universal discourse faces the practices and appropriations "from below" by subaltern groups. The "subaltern condition" reveals an exogenous identity assignment attributed to a minority by a dominant majority. However, the orientalist theory argues that it is precisely the existence of this minority that challenges the universalism of the dominant condition. In this sense, the practices of subaltern groups can be read as signs of a "postcolonial" production of the city, which puts pressure on the dominant town planning.; Dans cet article, j'explore l'articulation entre des constructions discursives relevant d'une subalternisation de sujets internes à la société et la production des métropoles contemporaines. Mon analyse d'une condition de « subalternité métropolitaine », issue de mes recherches de doctorat, s'insère dans la réflexion des études postcoloniales et subalternes. Dans le processus de production hégémonique de la ville, les pratiques populaires sont utilisées par les groupes dominants comme argument de délégitimation des populations pauvres. Le récit étant l'un des instruments indispensables de ce que j'ai appelé « urbanisme de la globalisation », c'est à travers celui-ci que le discours sur la ville se propage et prend sa force délégitimante. J'analyse cette version urbaine d'une domination de type orientaliste, et comment ce discours, qui se veut universel, se heurte aux pratiques et aux appropriations « par le bas » des groupes subalternes. La « condition subalterne » révèle une assignation identitaire exogène, attribuée à une minorité par une majorité dominante. Cependant, l'optique orientaliste nous apprend que c'est justement l'existence de cette minorité qui remet en cause l'universalisme de la condition dominante. Dans ce sens, les pratiques des groupes subalternes peuvent être lues comme les signes d'une production « postcoloniale » de la ville, qui fait pression sur l'urbanisme dominant. International audience; The development of the centre is a major challenge in relation to the international competition among cities. Today's redevelopment projects not only shape urban spaces, but also contribute to the construction of a set of winning images. Heritage has a fundamental role to play in this process, because it justifies some of the characteristics of the inner city and the need to convey them to posterity. Therefore, the theme of "urban renewal" is a crucial argument: development does not simply create an ex-novo urban framework, but brings back to life a grandeur that has already existed. Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is an interesting example of this process of imposing a past, selected through the manipulation of the nostalgic feelings of a part of the population, to be valued both in urban planning, and in the construction of a set of winning images. This article, based on my thesis research, analyzes, on the one hand, the use by Cairo developers of selective memory as an instrument of a dominant urbanism and, on the other hand, the tensions that have developed since January 2011 between this imposed narration and the renewed practices of the inhabitants in the centre. The selection of the memory transforms and reinterprets the nostalgic feeling of some social categories in order to legitimize urban exclusion of other social groups. However, this nostalgia for a bygone era has to deal with unprecedented expectations for the future, which have guided a deep political change and which redesigns urban territory.

A detailed geomorphological survey was undertaken in the area of Puerto Deseado (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina) to reconstruct the Relative Sea-level (RSL) position during the Last Interglacial highstand. The presence of active and well-preserved abrasive notches and inner margins of terraces related to the MIS5e and to the Holocene, measured with DGPS, allowed to accurately estimate the RSL change from the present to the MIS5e highstand at ca. 21 m. The geomorphological and geochronological analyses support the notion of the presence of a significant regional tectonic uplift in the Atlantic Patagonia, which can be locally estimated at ca. 0.12 mm/yr.

Ground wedge structures of cryogenic origin are common in the Quaternary sediments along the coast of the Patagonia, and their formation is related to climatic cold events experienced by this area in the Late Quaternary. The infilling sediments of two wedges generations were analyzed in the area of Puerto Deseado. Bulk chemistry (major elements), X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphoscopic observations with Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) and chemical analyses of volcanic glass shards were undertaken to provide indications about infilling sediment provenience, along with chronological constraint for wedge formation. Bulk chemistry and XRD patterns indicate a significant SiO2- enriched composition of the sediment infilling compared to the most of the loess deposits of the North Argentina and the present day dust originated in Patagonia. This was interpreted as due to the nature of the bedrock present over the Deseado Massif. SEM morphoscopic characteristics of glass shards evidence typical aeolian reworking features, with impact structures and indented edges of the volcanic fragments. Chemical analyses of the glass shards indicate that they were probably generated by the H0 eruption (17,300-17,400 cal yr BP) of the Hudson volcano. Volcanological data indicate that H0 eruption dispersed toward NE, but volcanic glasses were available for reworking due to a WNW component in the western wind direction. Over the Deseado Massif structural high the glass shards mixed with sediments enriched in SiO2, and were eventually deflated further to SE reaching the present coastal area and infilling the frost cracks. The age of the glass shards (17,300-17,400 cal yr BP) and that of the sandy layer affected by cryogenic structures (14,670±750 yr BP) well constrain to the Late Glacial both wedge generations. RESUMEN Las cuñas de hielo son estructuras comunes en sedimentos cuaternarios a lo largo de la costa patagónica, y su formación está relacionada con eventos climáticos fríos experimentados en esta área en el Cuaternario Tardío. Se analizaron sedimentos que rellenan dos generaciones de cuñas de hielo en la zona de Puerto Deseado. Análisis químicos de elementos mayores, difractometría de rayos X (DRX), observaciones con microscopio electrónico de barrido (SEM) y análisis químico de fragmentos de vidrio volcánico contenidos en el sedimento que rellena las cuñas proporcionaron información sobre la precedencia del relleno, además de inferir antecedentes cronológicos sobre su formación. La composición química del sedimento y la difracción de rayos X indican una composición enriquecida en SiO2 en comparación con la mayoría de los depósitos de loess del norte de Argentina y el polvo actual originado en la Patagonia. Esto fue interpretado como producto de la influencia de las rocas que constituyen el macizo del Deseado. Las características morfológicas de los fragmentos de vidrio evidencian rasgos típicos de retrabajo eólico, con presencia de estructuras de impacto y bordes dentados. Los análisis químicos de los fragmentos de vidrio son compatibles con un origen en la erupción H0 (17.300-17.400 cal yr BP) del volcán Hudson. Datos volcanológicos indican que la erupción H0 originó una pluma de dispersión hacia el NE. El material volcánico dispersado por esta erupción quedó disponible para ser retrabajado por una componente WNW de los vientos del W dominantes en la zona. Sobre el macizo del Deseado, los fragmentos de vidrio se mezclaron con sedimentos ricos en SiO2 y fueron adicionalmente, enriquecidos en este elemento hasta alcanzar el área de costa actual, rellenando las cuñas de hielo. La edad de los fragmentos de vidrio (17.300-17.400 cal yr BP) y de la capa arenosa afectada por las estructuras criogénicas (14.670±750 años BP) limitan al glacial tardío la formación de ambas generaciones de cuñas.

This research examines the discursive practices of domination and othering in urban production. Our analysis opens with the questioning of globalization in urban planning and its relationship with the micro-local level. Our hypothesis is that dominant groups use popular practices as an argument of delegitimization of the poor in the "visions" of the globalized city. This stigma is fuelled by the stereotypes of the undeveloped city and the immobilism of these "subaltern groups", but also by the conflicts between the inhabitants of the centre for the appropriation of space in everyday life. Thus, the domination results as a complex tangle between real social conditions and stereotypical discourses. This research follows an interdisciplinary approach, which crosses the architecture-specific analysis of the city with a sociological perspective. We chose as our case studies two cities, Cairo (Egypt) and Naples (Italy). Despite the profound differences in context, many issues overlap: the touristic appeal depending on the exclusion of a part of the population, the politics of heritage of the city centres, and an urban planning haunted by the myth of fallen greatness. Through the study of micro-local practices of domestic and urban space, and the process of construction and manipulation of a condition of "metropolitan subalternity", it appears that if, on the one hand, developers claim the monopoly of decision making, on the other, inhabitants develop a production of urban space "from below"., Cette recherche interroge les pratiques discursives de domination et d’altérisation dans la production urbaine. Notre analyse prend le départ du questionnement de la globalisation dans la planification urbaine et de son articulation au niveau micro-local. Notre hypothèse est que les groupes dominants utilisent les pratiques populaires comme argument de délégitimation des populations pauvres dans les « visions » de la ville globalisée. Cette stigmatisation se nourrit des stéréotypes de la ville en retard et de l’immobilisme de ces « groupes subalternes », mais également des conflits entre les habitants du centre pour l’appropriation de l’espace au quotidien. La domination exercée résulte alors d’un enchevêtrement complexe entre des conditions sociales réelles et des discours stéréotypés. Cette recherche suit une démarche interdisciplinaire, qui croise les approches à la ville propres à l’architecture avec le regard sociologique. Le choix des terrains d’étude se porte sur deux métropoles, Le Caire (Égypte) et Naples (Italie). Malgré de profondes différences de contexte, les questions s’imbriquent : l’attractivité touristique qui passe par le changement de population, la patrimonialisation de l’architecture des centres, et un urbanisme hanté par le mythe d’une grandeur déchue. À travers l’étude des pratiques micro-locales d’occupation du logement et de l’espace urbain, ainsi que du processus de construction et de manipulation d’une condition de « subalternité métropolitaine », il apparaît que si d’un côté les aménageurs revendiquent le monopole de la prise de décision, de l’autre les habitants mettent en place une production de l’espace urbain « par le bas ».

International audience; Le centre historique de Naples, classé Patrimoine de l’Humanité Unesco, est touché par une dégradation importante. Pour reprendre en main ce territoire la Municipalité a lancé, en 2009, le Grand Programme Centre Historique Naples Unesco, une stratégie d’ensemble qui associe la réhabilitation du patrimoine bâti à un réaménagement urbain plus large. L’une des opérations phare du Grand Programme est la reconversion en commerces des bassi, des locaux traditionnellement utilisés comme des logements. La plupart des bassi sont concentrés dans la zone des Quartieri Spagnoli, une importante poche de pauvreté mais également un territoire très convoité pour sa valeur foncière potentielle et sa proximité avec la rue commerçante de Naples par excellence, la rue Toledo. A travers l’analyse des pratiques de cette architecture traditionnelle ainsi que de l’espace du centre historique en général, on peut questionner les rapports de domination dans le processus de planification urbaine en centre-ville et la délégitimation des pratiques et identités des groupes défavorisés de la population, qui s’approprient fortement le territoire du centre en tant que ressource indispensable à leur vie quotidienne. Comment la planification urbaine peut-elle traduire une volonté de domination de groupes indésirables dans la vitrine de la ville ?

The great variety of climatic conditions, tidal ranges and wave regimes of South and Central America act on a complex geology and tectonic framework. Many of the rock and cliffed coasts of South America are strongly controlled by the occurrence of extensive Cenozoic and Pleistocene sediments that crop out at the coast. Geology and the different uplift rates are a major factor inthe whole coastal geomorphology of South and Central America, and consequently are a very important control of the processes andlandforms of rock coasts. This chapter covers several aspects of the rock coast of South and Central America, with special attention to the combination of tectonic movements and Quaternary Pleistocene–Holocene sea-level changes La gran variedad de condiciones climáticas, rangos de mareas y regímenes de olas de América del Sur y Central actúan sobre un complejo marco geológico y tectónico. Muchas de las costas rocosas y acantiladas de América del Sur están fuertemente controladas por la aparición de extensos sedimentos del Cenozoico y el Pleistoceno que afloran en la costa. La geología y las diferentes tasas de elevación son un factor importante en toda la geomorfología costera de América del Sur y Central y, en consecuencia, son un control muy importante de los procesos y formas de relieve de las costas rocosas.
