Research on academic integrity used to focus more on student character and behaviour. Now this research includes wider viewing of this issue as a current teaching and learning challenge which requires pedagogical intervention. It is now the responsibility of staff and institutions to treat the creation of a learning environment supporting academic integrity as a teaching and learning priority. Plagiarism by simply copying other people's work is a well-known misconduct which undermines academic integrity; moreover, technological developments have evolved plagiarism to include the generation and copying of computer-generated text. Automated paraphrasing tool (APT) websites have become increasingly common, offering students machine-generated rephrased text that students input from their own or others' writing. These developments present a creeping erosion of academic integrity under the guise of legitimate academic assistance. This also has implications for arrival of large language model (LLM) generative AI tools. In accessing these sites, students must discern what is a legitimate use of the tool and what may constitute breaching academic integrity. This study critically analysed the text from five online paraphrasing websites to examine the discourses used to legitimise and encourage APT use in both appropriate and inappropriate ways. We conceptualised these competing discourses using Sheep and Wolf metaphors. In addition, we offer a metaphor of the Educator as a Shepherd to become aware of APT website claims and assist students to develop critical language awareness when exposed to these sites. Educators can assist students with this through knowledge of how these sites use language to entice users to circumvent learning.

This paper reports the key findings from two student surveys undertaken at our institution in the academic years 2020-21 and 2021-22. The research was based on the Bretag et al. (2018) student survey undertaken in various Australian universities. After discussions with both Bretag and Harper, we adapted the questions to our context -- a Russell Group university in the UK -- but included similar questions to enable a comparison, and to find out if there were common themes. The main aim of the surveys was to understand our students' awareness of what is meant by the term 'academic integrity', defined as 'being honest in your work, acknowledging the work of others and giving credit where you have used other people's ideas/data' https://secretariat.leeds.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/109/2022/12/academic_integrity.pdf. The responses provided an important insight into student attitudes to academic integrity, their understanding of academic malpractice, and their awareness of the penalties if found to have plagiarised, and if found guilty of contract cheating (Medway et al., 2018; Morris, 2018; Harper et al., 2019). The surveys also identified what students would find useful in developing their understanding of academic integrity, and this underlines the importance of consulting our students. Key findings include gaps in the information provided to students, the need for regular and timely reminders of the principles of academic integrity, and the need for guidance to be written using student-friendly language. The findings informed our recommendations in terms of teaching and learning at School/Faculty level and to policy at University level, to further support student success. In the context of the key issues raised by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Academic Integrity Charter (2020), we discuss examples of best practice currently undertaken at the University of Leeds, on-going discussions regarding developments, and our recommendations for further embedding a culture of academic integrity. We argue that all students should have the same baseline experience and therefore promoting this ethos is the responsibility of all staff who teach and support students.

Given the prevalence of misconduct in research and among students in higher education, there is a need to create solutions for how best to prevent such behaviour in academia. This paper proceeds on the assumption that one way forward is to prepare students in higher education at an early stage and to encourage a smoother transition from academic integrity to research integrity by incorporating academic integrity training as an ongoing part of the curriculum. To this end, this paper presents three checklists developed as part of the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership project "Bridging Integrity in Higher Education, Business and Society" (BRIDGE, 2020-1-SE01-KA203-077973). The aim of the checklists is to help students and their supervisors to bridge academic integrity and research integrity in research training. The checklists target master students, doctoral students, and their supervisors. This paper presents the theoretical background of the checklists, how they were developed, their content, and how they may be used in supervising thesis/dissertation work to promote a transition from academic integrity to research integrity.

Despite efforts to eradicate academic dishonesty in educational settings, the phenomenon persists and cheating is increasingly becoming easier due to the advancement of information technology. Factors like peer pressure, time constraints, stress, and workload contribute to dishonest behavior among students. This article emphasizes the importance of academic integrity in higher education, aiming to prevent dishonesty, understand its effects, and discourage fraudulent activities. Solutions to this problem include fostering a culture of academic integrity throughout institutions and encouraging students to critically evaluate theories, maintain morality, produce unique work, and properly credit sources contributes to preserving a culture of academic integrity. Text-matching and proctored software can aid in detecting offenders and reinforces academic integrity

This article takes as its point of departure an incident in which Helen Keller was accused of plagiarising a short story while residing at the Perkins Institution for the Blind: the so-called "Frost King" incident. Keller's guilt or innocence is not the subject of my inquiry. Rather, how did the culture of Perkins -- as fostered by its first two directors, Samuel Gridley Howe and Michael Anagnos -- help create the conditions for the incident to transpire? I consider this question in light of the visibility of Perkins as an institution in 1892. From its inception, Perkins courted the public, both to raise funds and to garner sympathy more generally for blind students. This meant that the directors were acutely sensitive to the power of public opinion to affect the health of the institution. Caught between Perkins's administrators and the public were the students themselves. More broadly, this article seeks to historicise the Perkins Institution, as a product of nineteenth-century American progress, specifically the project of universal, secular education, tinged with Protestant perfectibility. At the same time, it both imbibed and trafficked in Romantic tropes of blind exceptionalism: that at least some blind individuals were possessed of prophetic, inner vision.

This study offers a critical examination of university policies developed to address recent challenges presented by generative AI (GenAI) to higher education assessment. Drawing on Bacchi's 'What's the problem represented to be' (WPR) framework, we analysed the GenAI policies of 20 world-leading universities to explore what are considered problems in this AI-mediated assessment landscape and how these problems are represented in policies. Although miscellaneous GenAI-related problems were mentioned in these policies (e.g. reliability of AI-generated outputs, equal access to GenAI), the primary problem represented is that students may not submit original work for assessment. In the current framing, GenAI is often viewed as a type of external assistance separate from the student's independent efforts and intellectual contribution, thereby undermining the originality of their work. We argue that such problem representation fails to acknowledge how the rise of GenAI further complicates the process of producing original work and what it means by originality in a time when knowledge production becomes increasingly distributed, collaborative and mediated by technology. Therefore, a critical silence in higher education policies concerns the evolving notion of originality in the digital age and a more inclusive approach to address the originality of students' work is required.

AI chatbots, e.g. ChatGPT, are becoming increasingly popular in education as a means to enhance student learning experiences and improve teaching efficiency. This study utilizes NVivo 12 Plus to examine the role of AI chatbots in education, ethical considerations, and sentimental analysis regarding the utilization of ChatGPT in education. ChatGPT has revolutionized education, but their use raises ethical concerns. They can enhance language learning, but may lead to plagiarism and information overload. Students may not develop discrimination skills and may rely on ChatGPT, leading to concerns about academic dishonesty and a failure to develop cognitive and analytical skills. The use of ChatGPT in clinical education also raises accountability and liability concerns regarding the use of patient information for educational purposes. Guidelines should be established to ensure privacy rights are upheld. Finally, the positive sentiment category was populated by predominantly positive sentiments, followed by neutral and negative sentiments. Future research on ChatGPT in education should focus on its application effectiveness in various educational settings and ethical considerations.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the education sector to transform significantly in order to support students across the world. Technology played a crucial role in enhancing and adapting traditional learning to digital resources and networks, which are now an essential component of education. However, there is concern about the quality of teaching and its effectiveness in remote teaching due to the lack of real-life feel of more traditional face-to-face education. Our study analysed two separate groups of students enrolled in the same course but provided with either face-to-face or remote teaching. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference in students' performance or gain, even for laboratory work and resulting reports. However, there was a statistically significant difference in Turnitin scores between these groups, with the remote students having higher levels of plagiarism compared to the traditional face-to-face students. These results support the theory that remote teaching can be a valid alternative, if not a substitute, to face-to-face teaching in the future. The study's findings are expected to help instructors who are thinking about providing programs through blended learning in the post-pandemic era.

This study attempts to explore the impact of ChatGPT on EFL learners' English writing and how this benefits from it. The three research objectives are to explore the reasons why EFL learners choose to use ChatGPT for their academic English writing, to examine how it affects EFL learners' academic English writing and define the challenges and opportunities for EFL learners using ChatGPT as an academic English writing tool. This study employed semi-structured and open-ended interviews to collect qualitative data. By thematic analysis, we found that EFL learners use ChatGPT for their academic English writing as it is convenient and caters to their needs. It also assists them since it scaffolds literacy in terms of writing fluency, content, and knowledge. Challenges for learners include: 1) possible academic plagiarism and a lack of critical thinking due to their over-reliance on the information provided by ChatGPT; 2) bias in English academic writing from the English-dominant context and pressure to pay; 3) considering and scrutinizing the authenticity of information generated in academic contexts. With its ease of use and undeniable efficiency, ChatGPT has emerged as a revolutionary tool in the realm of language learning and academic writing. However, English learners should be cautious and reflect on using this AI tool, especially for academic writing purposes.

Contract cheating is a challenging problem facing higher and further education providers (HE and FE) worldwide. In the UK, contract cheating has been identified as a growing problem by the HEA and, more recently, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and the Department for Education. The high rate of contact cheating among students suggests that 8-9% of degrees awarded in the UK are unsafe. To address this issue, the current study with a new approach seeks to investigate student's motivations, experiences, and rationale for using contract cheating from their point of view. Collected data has been subjected to content analysis and the findings show different phases and drivers in this process. This study will help increase awareness among UK academics and education providers about the processes involved in contract cheating and propose a set of recommendations for the future.

Purpose: This study examines the impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), particularly ChatGPT, on higher education (HE). The ease with which content can be generated using GenAI has raised concerns across academia regarding its role in academic contexts, particularly regarding summative assessments. This research makes a unique contribution to the literature by examining university student and staff perceptions of current and future issues pertaining to the role of GenAI in universities. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative method involving five one-to-one semi-structured interviews with four students and a lecturer explored the ethical and practical issues of GenAI text generation in academia. An inductive thematic analysis was chosen as it provided nuanced insights aligned with the study's goals. Findings: Use of GenAI was discussed within the context of a range of topics, including perceptions of academic misconduct, authorial integrity and issues pertaining to university policies. Participants universally defined traditional classifications of academic misconduct but were unable to provide clear definitions where the use of GenAI was included for writing summative assessments. Students showed a more open engagement with GenAI, considering it a tool for overcoming obstacles rather than a means to plagiarise. Educators were generally more cautious and less optimistic about the academic role of GenAI. Lack of clear institutional policies surrounding such tools also contributed to ethical ambiguities. Originality/value: The study highlights diverging perspectives between students and academics, which necessitate a forum for dialogue, ensuring the need to develop clear policies to steer the integration of GenAI in a manner that is beneficial for students and academics.

The shift to online instruction in higher education related to the COVID-19 pandemic has raised worldwide concerns about an increase in academic misconduct (cheating and plagiarism). However, data to document any increase is sparse. For this study, we collected survey data from 484 students in 11 universities in the USA, and 410 students in five universities in Romania. The data support the conclusions that: (1) cheating on exams increased with the shift to online instruction, but plagiarism and cheating on assignments may not have increased; (2) significant differences between the two countries suggest that intervention planning should avoid assuming that results from one context may generalize to another; and (3) influencing student beliefs about rates of AM among their peers may be a fruitful new route for reducing academic misconduct.

This paper presents the first systematic investigation into the search engine optimization practices of major contract cheating websites in the United States. From a business perspective, visibility in organic search engine results is considered one of the top client recruitment tools. The current understanding of student recruitment strategies by these companies remains largely unexplored in both academic literature and popular press. Replicating the business research practices used in the search engine optimization industry, comprehensive search engine ranking and traffic data was obtained for the 38 largest contract cheating websites in the US. The overall objective was to illuminate the strategies that these companies take to get their services at the top of the search results of as many students as possible -- not just the relatively small proportion of students actively cheating. The results show that these companies dominate the search results for not just students searching to cheat, but also for naïve search efforts, when students are simply doing genuine research or classwork. These nefarious companies use highly sophisticated search engine manipulation strategies to bait naïve student searchers onto their sites, thus enabling the potential to switch them to cheaters. Higher education institutions, armed with the specific details provided in this study, can use the strategies outlined in the discussion to directly and negatively impact on the success of these contract cheating services.

In order to address the rising concerns about undergraduates' plagiarism in academic writing practices, a blended learning scenario (a combination of face-to-face learning with online learning) was designed and the effectiveness of it was tested. Results indicated that the students became more capable of distinguishing plagiarism cases in different scenarios, and their writing performance significantly improved by engaging in the blended learning scenario, i.e. the extent of plagiarism substantially decreased and writing quality greatly increased. Furthermore, the students mostly provided positive feedback towards the learning intervention. This study contributes to existing literature on instructional solutions to plagiarism issues by focusing on how students' understandings of plagiarism and source use can be achieved during their writing in a blended learning scenario.

Academic misconduct stemming from file-sharing websites is an increasingly prevalent challenge in tertiary education, including information technology and engineering disciplines. Current plagiarism detection methods (e.g., text matching) are largely ineffective for combatting misconduct in programming and mathematics-based assessments. For these reasons, the development of an effective, automated monitoring tool would provide significant benefit in the struggle against misconduct. To address this challenge, this article reports an innovative software tool named AssignmentWatch which supports academic integrity by actively monitoring the upload of assessment content online, with a focus on file-sharing websites. This monitoring and alert notification system reduces the time burden on educators by automating the detection process. The design of AssignmentWatch focuses on early detection which enables educators to take early action. This could include preventative education or removal of content before it is utilized by students. Through this, AssignmentWatch can reduce incidents of misconduct. The software tool is open source and made freely available to the community. AssignmentWatch was validated under controlled conditions, followed by field testing in 30 assignments, across 16 subjects, and 5 higher education institutions. AssignmentWatch was found to effectively detect uploads on a variety of websites, generally within 24 h. In field testing, AssignmentWatch received positive feedback from educators with 8 out of 10 educators stating AssignmentWatch aided academic integrity and 7 out of 10 users stating AssignmentWatch helped identify assignment content online.

Cheating has been a long-standing issue in university assessments. However, the release of ChatGPT and other free-to-use generative AI tools has provided a new and distinct method for cheating. Students can run many assessment questions through the tool and generate a superficially compelling answer, which may or may not be accurate. We ran a dual-anonymous "quality assurance" marking exercise across four end-of-module assessments across a distance university computer science (CS) curriculum. Each marker received five ChatGPT-generated scripts alongside 10 student scripts. A total of 90 scripts were marked; every ChatGPT generated script for the undergraduate modules received at least a passing grade (>40%), with all of the introductory module CS1 scripts receiving a distinction (>85%). None of the ChatGPT-taught postgraduate scripts received a passing grade (>50%). We also present the results of interviewing the markers and of running our sample scripts through a GPT-2 detector and the TurnItIn AI detector, which both identified every ChatGPT-generated script but differed in the number of false positives. As such, we contribute a baseline understanding of how the public release of generative AI is likely to significantly impact quality assurance processes. Our analysis demonstrates that in most cases, across a range of question formats, topics, and study levels, ChatGPT is at least capable of producing adequate answers for undergraduate assessment.

The use of artificial intelligence in academia is a hot topic in the education field. ChatGPT is an AI tool that offers a range of benefits, including increased student engagement, collaboration, and accessibility. However, is also raises concerns regarding academic honesty and plagiarism. This paper examines the opportunities and challenges of using ChatGPT in higher education, and discusses the potential risks and rewards of these tools. The paper also considers the difficulties of detecting and preventing academic dishonesty, and suggests strategies that universities can adopt to ensure ethical and responsible use of these tools. These strategies include developing policies and procedures, providing training and support, and using various methods to detect and prevent cheating. The paper concludes that while the use of AI in higher education presents both opportunities and challenges, universities can effectively address these concerns by taking a proactive and ethical approach to the use of these tools.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced higher education institutions worldwide to shift from face-to-face (F2F) to emergency remote teaching (ERT), which has led to an increased concern about academic integrity. This study examines the relationship between learning environment and academic integrity via plagiarism detection software in different disciplines and according to higher education institutional ranking. We analysed 7976 assignments submitted between 2019 and 2020 in 39 Israeli academic institutions. The results indicated that the transition to ERT is associated with decreased academic integrity, especially in humanities. Similarly, the shift to ERT particularly affected college students and students studying in medium- and low-ranked institutions. We conclude that an institutional- and discipline-based approach is required to combat academic misconduct in ERT settings. Automating plagiarism detection software may also help students self-check their written assessments; this may be an essential first step toward enhancing academic integrity.

The propensity to cheat is intrinsic to every kind of education or training that requires effort and commitment. Academic dishonesty is a significant issue among secondary and postsecondary students worldwide. The majority of students have been involved in at least one kind of academic dishonesty in the preceding academic year. The fraud triangle was studied to explain student dishonesty. The present research evaluates how much the fraud triangle theory adds to business school students' dishonesty. Technology as a mediator has also been studied. The research found that, despite their insight into the gravity of most cheating activities, students continued to actively participate in cheating.

Aim/Purpose: This mixed-methods study aims to examine factors influencing academicians' intentions to continue using AI-based chatbots by integrating the Task-Technology Fit (TTF) model and social network characteristics. Background: AI-powered chatbots are gaining popularity across industries, including academia. However, empirical research on academicians' adoption behavior is limited. This study proposes an integrated model incorporating TTF factors and social network characteristics like density, homophily, and connectedness to understand academics' continuance intentions. Methodology: A qualitative study involving 31 interviews of academics from India examined attitudes and the potential role of social network characteristics like density, homophily, and connectedness in adoption. Results showed positive sentiment towards chatbots and themes on how peer groups accelerate diffusion. In the second phase, a survey of 448 faculty members from prominent Indian universities was conducted to test the proposed research model. Contribution: The study proposes and validates an integrated model of TTF and social network factors that influence academics' continued usage intentions toward AI chatbots. It highlights the nuanced role of peer networks in shaping adoption. Findings: Task and technology characteristics positively affected academics' intentions to continue AI chatbot usage. Among network factors, density showed the strongest effect on TTF and perceived usefulness, while homophily and connectedness had partial effects. The study provides insights into designing appropriate AI tools for the academic context. Recommendations for Practitioners: AI chatbot designers should focus on aligning features to academics' task needs and preferences. Compatibility with academic work culture is critical. Given peer network influences, training and demonstrations to user groups can enhance adoption. Platforms should have capabilities for collaborative use. Targeted messaging customized to disciplines can resonate better with academic subgroups. Multidisciplinary influencers should be engaged. Concerns like plagiarism risks, privacy, and job impacts should be transparently addressed. Recommendation for Researchers: More studies are needed across academic subfields to understand nuanced requirements and barriers. Further studies are recommended to investigate differences across disciplines and demographics, relative effects of specific network factors like size, proximity, and frequency of interaction, the role of academic leadership and institutional policies in enabling chatbot adoption, and how AI training biases impact usefulness perceptions and ethical issues. Impact on Society: Increased productivity in academia through the appropriate and ethical use of AI can enhance quality, access, and equity in education. AI can assist in mundane tasks, freeing academics' time for higher-order objectives like critical thinking development. Responsible AI design and policies considering socio-cultural aspects will benefit sustainable growth. With careful implementation, it can make positive impacts on student engagement, learning support, and research efficiency. Future Research: Conduct longitudinal studies to examine the long-term impacts of AI chatbot usage in academia. Track usage behaviors over time as familiarity develops. Investigate differences across academic disciplines and roles. Requirements may vary for humanities versus STEM faculty or undergraduate versus graduate students. Assess user trust in AI and how it evolves with repeated usage, and examine trust-building strategies. Develop frameworks to assess pedagogical effectiveness and ethical risks of conversational agents in academic contexts.

Widespread academic dishonesty among higher education (HE) students has been a concern for higher education institutes (HEIs). Ethics literature reports that unintentional plagiarism is more prevalent among HE students and the root cause is, limited or no awareness of nuances of ethics concerning plagiarism resulting in poor ethical judgments. This study attempts to examine what is students' ethical reasoning for unintentional plagiarism and how HEIs' ethical awareness efforts impact students' ethical judgments which ultimately shape their ethical behavior. The study also explored whether and how individual-level factors such as intrinsic religiosity, age, gender, and work experience moderate the focal relationships. A longitudinal quasi-experimental field study was conducted. The subjects of the study were 294 postgraduate students of an internationally accredited higher education institution in India. The pretest-posttest design involved a set of experimental manipulations reflecting the HEI's endeavors to explicate the unethical implications of plagiarism.

This study aims to investigate performances and strategies of EFL graduate students in terms of language proficiency, language background and type of writing task. The participants were 12 graduate students pursuing their doctoral studies in ELT at a Turkish university. A chosen text was used for data collection and the students' paraphrased texts were analyzed employing Keck's (2006) the taxonomy of paraphrase types and 'a paraphrase found form' developed by the researcher in terms of lexical and structural changes. The results of the study revealed that graduate students had challenges in appropriate implementation of paraphrasing in their task. While they generated frequently moderate level of paraphrases, the strategies they often used were synonym substitution as well as copying strings of words from source. Additionally, deviated meaning was designated as a new paraphrase type in the taxonomy of paraphrase. These findings suggest that students need an explicit paraphrasing instruction supported by good and bad paraphrase examples and more practice to learn how to paraphrase appropriately.

This study aims to determine academicians' and post-graduate students' views on violations of ethics. It is a qualitative study in the design of a case study. It was conducted using the criterion sampling method, and the study group was composed of 72 participants; 22 academicians and 50 post-graduate students. The research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form and were analyzed inductively. Accordingly, the findings from the perspective of academicians were described in three themes labeled as ethical definitions, experiences in violations of ethics, and suggestions for solutions in this respect. The findings obtained from the perspective of post-graduate students were also described in three themes. Thus, the conceptual definition of ethics and morals was made, the violations of ethics experienced by post-graduate students were determined, and the suggestions for solutions to the violations were made.

This article attempts to comprehend the current issues and hurdles that Indian colleges affiliated with Tamil Nadu State Universities encounter when trying to subscribe to a software that detects plagiarism. The study's goals are to determine whether colleges employ anti-plagiarism software, whether they ensure that their student-given assignments are free of copyright infringement, whether tutors teach about academic misconduct, and what people seem to think of anti-plagiarism software. We surveyed for this study and distributed the questionnaires among college administrators, principals, and librarians. The study respondents are 15.9 per cent principals, 64.2 per cent library professionals, and 19.9 per cent college administrators. The survey study report shows that 70.9 per cent of the majority of the colleges did not subscribe. 41.7 per cent gave the reason it is too expensive, and 30.5 per cent of respondents thought that for their college, it is unnecessary to subscribe. However, nobody has confirmed whether or not all colleges possess access to plagiarism detection software. Thus, according to this investigation, further Indian states must be involved in this research to understand the specific context fully. This report advises the UGC to enforce the requirement that colleges have plagiarism detection software; they either provide colleges additional money to subscribe to such software, or the university must grant free access to the affiliated colleges.

This study aimed to identify problems, describe, analyze, and evaluate the use of e-commerce to increase the competitiveness of innovative and entrepreneurial products produced by students of State Vocational High School 3 South Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia. This research had three main stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the evaluation stage. The research location was the State Vocational High School 3 South Tangerang, Banten Province, Indonesia, due to the school being outstanding in the field of Motorcycle and Animation expertise. The resource persons and respondents in this study were teaching teachers and students in classes 10-12 majoring in culinary, automotive, and animation. Implementing e-commerce activities at the production unit of State Vocational High School 3 South Tangerang, has increased the image of the production unit of State Vocational High School 3 South Tangerang. This study was a descriptive qualitative with the questionnaire, interview, and practice method. This study revealed that the application of e-commerce using the Shopee seller marketplace provided significant benefits and impacts for the production unit of State Vocational High School 3 South Tangerang. When the production unit implemented e-commerce, sales turnover increases rapidly, and the number of consumers, as a means of promotion, ease of transaction did not need to meet directly with buyers and can expand the business. However, there were also several obstacles, like weak human resources, intense competition, and the emergence of plagiarism of ideas and products.

Plagiarism has become more prevalent in higher learning institutions. Tertiary students have the tendency to commit plagiarism as a quick solution for completing their assignments, or they may unintentionally commit it because they lack awareness towards it. Curbing plagiarism amongst tertiary students is important to maintain academic integrity. Thus, the study aimed to investigate whether there were any differences between genders on awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism amongst tertiary students. The study employed a quantitative method by using a set of questionnaires as the instrument to gather the data which was distributed via the class WhatsApp groups. The sample consisted of 50 undergraduate students from Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Negeri Sembilan, Kampus Seremban, Malaysia, who were obtained through purposive sampling. The data collected were analysed by using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the independent t-test demonstrated that there were no significant differences between genders on awareness and attitudes towards plagiarism. The results were also consistent when the Mann Whitney U tests were conducted. Therefore, the results suggest that being aware of plagiarism and attitudes towards plagiarism cannot be associated with gender. Consequently, higher learning institutions should educate all students regardless of gender to prevent plagiarism from occurring.

Plagiarism has been among the top forms of academic misconduct. Detective, reactive and proactive measures are taken to mitigate plagiarism in scholarly works. Text-matching tools play a significant role in the detection of plagiarism. Many studies have tested the performance of text-matching tools in detecting plagiarism from various perspectives. However, no study addressed the performance of such tools in ideographic languages, particularly Japanese. Considering the sharp increase in the number of academic Japanese text and plagiarism incidents in the Japanese context, it is essential to explore to what extent text-matching tools catch similarities in Japanese texts and respond to the needs of Japanese users. Within this scope, this study set out to explore the coverage and usability performance of text-matching tools in the Japanese language. We tested the coverage performance of 10 text-matching tools with five types of intentionally plagiarized documents. Also, we tested the usability performance via a feature checklist. The testing results suggested that the tools generally give a relatively higher performance on the usability side rather than the coverage aspect. Most tools have minimal coverage performance in the Japanese language. In the end, we provided takeaways for vendors, policymakers and educators.

Plagiarism is becoming more widespread in all types of educational institutions (Park, 2003). In Vietnam, this academic dishonesty has received little attention in teaching and training at the tertiary level (Hoang, 2014; Nguyen & Filipi, 2017; Nguyen, 2018; Tran, 2021; Phan, 2006). To bridge this gap, the current study aims to investigate Vietnamese students' perceptions of plagiarism in English academic writing before and after receiving plagiarism tutorials. Before the training, 44 sophomore students were asked to write an essay at home with the purpose of checking for plagiarism, and 10 students were randomly invited to the interview. The findings show that thirty-five out of forty-four students did plagiarize (30% to 90%), as reported by "Turnitin" software. The understanding of plagiarism among students was poor and they thought that plagiarism was not a big deal. They also did not know how to avoid plagiarism by using citations and quotations in writing. According to these findings, the content of plagiarism tutorials was determined and designed based on the standard of the American Psychological Association (APA). The content of crediting sources includes plagiarism introduction, types of plagiarism, crediting sources, and citing references. They discovered several misconceptions as well as new information about plagiarism after the training. It is suggested that language teachers should consider applying integration and interaction principles to the pedagogy to mitigate the prevalence of plagiarism in English academic writing. Furthermore, plagiarism tutorials such as seminars or workshops should be provided for all students from various departments to raise students' awareness of plagiarism in education.

Cheating behaviour in exams in the form of plagiarism occurs in school and college education. Academic fraud is common at the higher education level at the undergraduate, master's level, and even at the doctoral level. Academic fraud is getting out of control and is difficult to eradicate on examinations carried out online without strict supervision. The purpose of this research was to reveal the level of academic cheating in the form of plagiarism and its correlation with the results of the mid and final test of the Doctoral program, which was conducted in the form of an on-line take-home examination. This research use a correlation analysis technique with a simple regression test. The sample was determined by purposive sampling technique, amounting to 101 students of 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes who took the 2nd-semester learning technical analysis and development courses. The plagiarism level of the mid and final-semester results was tested using Turnitin. This research found that the level of plagiarism in the form of an average similarity index in the mid-semester are at the intermediate level; medium level internet resources; publication at a low level; and middle-level student papers. Meanwhile, at the end of the semester, it is known that the similarity index is at the intermediate level; medium level internet resources; low level publications, and student papers at the intermediate level. Furthermore, the results of this study also reveal that there is a positive and significant correlation between index, internet source, and student papers with the results of mid-semester exams, except for the source of publication plagiarism. Meanwhile, there is only a positive and significant correlation between the source of student paper plagiarism and the examination of the results for the final semester exams. In contrast, the similarity index, internet sources, and publication did not find a significant relationship.

With the emergence of COVID-19, many educational pillars have been altered from conventional ways to online solutions. The educational assessment has been administered in online environments despite all encountered challenges. This descriptive study aimed to uncover the online assessment challenges that were confronted. Furthermore, it intended to display the impact of these challenges on the assessment principles. A mixed-method approach was adopted for data collection. A survey was used to collect quantitative data from 60 academic staff at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with four of them. The study found some challenges when applying online assessment such as learners' refusal to turn on cameras, heavy teaching loads, cheating, the long time required for developing online assessment instruments, impersonation/dishonesty, assessing practical experiences, plagiarism, grades' inflation, assessing group's work, academic integrity and a large number of students per section. The study concluded that these challenges respectively threatened assessment principles of validity, efficiency, fairness, reliability and variability. The current study investigated the relationship between research anxiety and academic e-dishonesty among preservice teachers. The participants were 558 students, attending teacher education faculties of eight state universities located in different districts of Turkey. Data was collected through "Research Anxiety Scale" and "Internet-Triggered Academic Dishonesty Scale (ITADS)". Findings revealed that research anxiety levels of preservice teachers are moderate and academic e-dishonesty levels are low. There is a significant relationship was found between the level of research anxiety and academic e-dishonesty. Research anxiety of the preservice teachers did not change according to taking a research oriented course or gender. Academic e-dishonesty levels varied with gender revealing that women were higher than men. Implications and suggestions for further research are provided.

Student plagiarism has challenged educators for decades, with heightened paranoia following the advent of the Internet in the 1980's and ready access to easily copied text. But plagiarism will look like child's play next to new developments in AI-based natural-language processing (NLP) systems that increasingly appear to "write" as effectively as humans. How people theorize and contextualize these developments will guide the way to meet their challenges in all courses where writing is assigned and evaluated In this article, the author first revisits an article they wrote for Composition Studies in 2011, "Fraudulent Practices: Academic Misrepresentations of Plagiarism in the Name of Good Pedagogy" (EJ960936). In that article, the author argued that what counts as plagiarism in some contexts occurs with impunity across a wide range of published material. This is because definitions of plagiarism are socially constructed and tied to context-sensitive cycles of reward for the production--and therefore the ownership--of certain kinds of texts. Helping students to understand plagiarism means showing them these contextually-specific constructs of text ownership, rather than assuming that any unattributed text, published anywhere, in any form, constitutes plagiarism. The author then turns to AI-based NLP systems. Teachers who learn what these systems can do usually respond with the same hand-wringing and defensive posture triggered by concerns about student plagiarism. But a social-practices interpretation again breaks open the systems' perceived threats and reveals a more nuanced and contextual approach to their challenges--and their potential acceptance and use--alongside writing produced by humans.

Plagiarism is prevalent all over the world, especially in higher education. This quantitative-descriptive study investigated the reasons and gender differences for plagiarism among undergraduate students at Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU). To collect quantitative data, the random sample of 102 undergraduates at WKU answered questions about plagiarism in the online questionnaire. The results revealed that the development of technology and the Internet is the main reason for plagiarism. Surprisingly, the study found that students are confident with their citation skills. The participants reported that using additional materials to help with their online testing is easy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has become another significant reason for plagiarism. In terms of gender differences, the results showed no significant difference in attitudes and behaviors toward plagiarism among WKU undergraduate students by gender. The study advises educational institutions like WKU should use both traditional solutions (e.g., failing the plagiarized assignment, giving suspension to student) and new solutions (e.g., using plagiarism tracking system) to deal with plagiarism.

This study examined the plagiarism rates of student teachers (hereafter students) during the distance education process and investigated the reasons for plagiarising. Qualitative dominant sequential exploratory design was used. The sample consisted of students studying at two different universities in Turkey. The study group was determined in two stages as a quantitative sample and a qualitative participant group. To select the quantitative sample, the maximum diversity sampling was used, while the criterion sampling method was utilized for the qualitative participant group. The data were collected in two stages as quantitative and qualitative in accordance with the nature of the mixed-methods research. In the first stage, the assignments prepared by students were included in the plagiarism program and their similarity rates were determined. All assignments were coded according to the names of the students who prepared them. Then, the assignments with the highest and lowest rate of plagiarism were identified. In the next stage, qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with the students who prepared the aforementioned assignments. The interview questions were prepared to obtain in-depth information about why they plagiarized or did not plagiarize. Content analysis was applied to analyse the data, and meaningful findings were found. The findings were collected under five headings. According to the results, those with high plagiarism stated their reasons for plagiarism as their economic and social conditions were not suitable for research. On the other hand, those with low plagiarism considered plagiarism as an action such as stealing and being unfair.

Background: Academic integrity is an essential quality to uplift the standards of higher education and plagiarism destroys it. Aims: This study aimed to explore the attitude toward plagiarism (ATP) and its association with gender, hours of Internet use among postgraduate (PG) students in a tertiary care teaching and research institute in South India. Methods: PG students from different disciplines (N = 383) formed the study participants for cross-sectional study and we used the ATP questionnaire (ATP-Q) that consisted of 29 statements measuring three attitudinal factors: positive, negative attitude, and subjective norms. Participants were given pro forma to fill the ATP-Q and data collected immediately. Results: Female students formed 58.7% of the participants and 41% were in their 1st year of the course. Our study noted that only 19.58% had the attitude that seems to approve plagiarism. Their scores on the questionnaire fell in the low-score category of positive attitude factor, low-score category of subjective norms factor, and high-score category of negative attitude factor. We did not see any association between approving ATP (categorized as Yes or No) with gender or hours of Internet use. However, a significant proportion of students in the 3rd year had approving ATP compared to those in the preceding years (Chi-square (df), p: 18.05(2), <0.001). Participants stated that increasing awareness and training on scientific writing skills as the most common ways to reduce plagiarism. Conclusion: Nearly one-fifth of PG students in the medical college seem to have attitude of approval of plagiarism, with majority having showed mixed ATP. Internet use and gender did not show any association with ATP. Increasing awareness and improving scientific literacy are suggested to minimize plagiarism among PG students in a medical institute.

While investigating plagiarism is relevant in different fields, verification of original authorship has also attracted attention in academia and L2 learning and assessment contexts. Generally associated with academic misconduct and dishonesty, plagiarism in writing can take many shapes and be hard to detect. In addition to being a very time-consuming task, detecting plagiarism is not straightforward because committing plagiarism usually involves using techniques other than word-for-word copying and pasting the exact words, sentences, or other pieces of writing. That is why computer scientists are looking for more efficient and fast automatic detection tools. This study aims at developing an external plagiarism detection model, analyzing 500 suspicious documents from a corpus of artificially plagiarized documents while finding similarity levels between them and a corresponding 500 source documents.

Background: Academic integrity (AI) is of increasing importance in higher education. At the same time, students are becoming more consumer-oriented and more inclined to appeal against, or complain about, a penalty imposed for a breach of AI. This combination of factors places pressure on institutions of higher education to handle alleged breaches of AI in a way acceptable to students that motivates them to continue to engage with their studies. Method: Students (n = 8) were interviewed to discover their perceptions of the process for dealing with breaches of AI. All students were based in one university in a very diverse area of London which has many first-generation students from non-traditional academic backgrounds. Results: Students reported strong emotional reactions featuring high levels of anxiety and stress. Some found the process to be threatening and demotivating and questioned continuation on their course of study, while others used more adaptive coping strategies. Students also went to great pains to make it clear that their own, and their friends', breaches of AI were unintentional, while expressing the view that other people were deliberately cheating and should be penalised. Key recommendations include: support for students to re-engage after the intervention; support for students to develop effective self-regulatory learning strategies and time management; provision of specific examples to clarify what is, and is not, acceptable academic practice; recognition of the strong emotions likely to be invoked, especially if accompanied by declarations of unintentionality.

The world relies on authentic research that guides legislation, policy formulations, and governmental and corporate actions. Therefore, researchers globally should be aware of academic integrity and publication ethics. This research delved into plagiarism that severely undermines any scientific study. It explores the relationship between adverse attitudes (attitudes that favor plagiarism) and plagiaristic behavior. We probed deeper into the theories of planned behavior, reasoned action, and ethical theories of rational self-interest, cultural acceptance, and deontology to propose corrective measures as an intervention to reduce adverse attitudes and plagiaristic behavior. Upon empirical testing of the said propositions through two studies (Study 1, n[subscript 1] = 2609; Study 2, n[subscript 2] = 2678), we ascertained a significant negative relationship between corrective measures and adverse attitudes and corrective measures and plagiaristic behavior. We also empirically examined the mediating effect of adverse attitudes on the relationship between corrective measures and plagiaristic behavior. The results confirm the mediation model, in which academics subjected to corrective actions reported reduced plagiaristic behavior through reduced adverse attitudes. The findings further the literature on plagiarism and provide crucial implications for managing plagiaristic behavior among academics. The study also provides specific corrective actions that educational administrators should initiate to ensure academic integrity.

This study extends the general understanding of the antecedents of academic dishonesty by examining what can happen when students are treated unjustly by teachers, a phenomenon referred to as teacher injustice. Based on Conservation of Resources theory (CoRT), the study investigates the mediating role of classroom connectedness and the moderating role of trait conscientiousness in the teacher injustice-academic dishonesty relationship. Self-report data were collected in three waves from Pakistani secondary school students to test the moderated-mediation model. Findings demonstrate that teacher injustice is positively related to academic dishonesty through classroom connectedness and that conscientiousness buffers the negative effects of teacher injustice on classroom connectedness. Given the results, this study suggests certain potentially effective measures to educational institutions to control the incidence of teacher injustice and cultivate conscientiousness in students. It also hopes to inspire future research, and advance education management theory and practice.

This article explores the potential uses of AI in gifted education programs. Gifted students often have unique learning characteristics and require specialized program services. The use of AI can provide advanced content, personalized learning, creative writing and image manipulation, critical thinking and problem-solving, collaboration, research skills, and advanced technology. ChatGPT and Bing AI can be used to provide additional resources and challenges, design individualized learning plans, provide feedback on writing, and pose challenging questions or problems. While AI has its limitations, it can be a valuable tool for gifted education programs to help meet the needs of gifted and talented students.

The phenomenological case study aimed to unearth the reasons that influence university students to plagiarize assignments. 67 participants were selected for semi-structured interviews, from the Faculty of Education of a public university, located in Karachi, Pakistan. The obtained data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings uncovered that most participants lacked a deep understanding of different types of academic plagiarism and practical skills to evade it. Prevalent sources of information for preparing assignments included websites, research papers, e-books, and project reports, without verifying quality. The most common reasons that have influenced research students to plagiarize assignments included weak language and academic writing skills, easy access to online resources, conventional assignments, inadequate digital literacy, short time-frame, and challenge to balance personal, professional, and academic life. Thus, plagiarism is a conscious act coupled with indirect pressures. It is recommended to promote the culture of academic honesty among learners. In this regard, courses on preventing plagiarism, digital literacy, academic reading, and research writing should be integrated as a pre-requisite for a postgraduate research degree. It is also proposed to help learners embrace conscious networking skills and ownership of learning. Furthermore, contextual information literacy and plagiarism frameworks should be introduced.
