The article presents a study which evaluated the safety and efficacy of a magnetic resonance (MR)-safe and compatible passive guide wire in helping MR-guided cardiac interventions in a swine model. Catheter manipulations were monitored in this study. The study concludes that with the availability of the new MR-compatible and safe guide wire, certain percutaneous cardiac interventions will become feasible to perform under MR guidance in the future.

Abstract: The porous TiO2/glass composite Ecopore has potential applications in hard tissue replacement. We describe the modification of Ecopore with the growth factor bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) to add osteoinductive properties. Ecopore covalently coated with BMP-2 caused a weak induction of alkaline phosphatase in murine embryonal fibroblasts. In a rabbit bone defect model, BMP-2-coated Ecopore had moderately higher bone apposition rates and ingrown bone quantities at 6 weeks after implantation. To overcome loss of function due to chemical surface coupling, we filled the pore system of Ecopore with heparinized collagen sponge and loaded this secondary matrix with BMP-2. Heparinization of collagen filling increased the BMP-2 loading capacity of the matrix approximately 1.28-fold. Within 96h, 17.0±0.1 and 10.1±0.2% of the used BMP-2 was released from non-modified and heparinized Ecopore/collagen, respectively, indicating that the heparin modification retarded BMP-2 release. Revealed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis of implant cross-sectional areas, BMP-2-loaded Ecopore/collagen had significantly higher bony ingrowth quantities in rabbits, with the heparinized modification yielding the highest value (16.09±3.51%, p <0.005) compared with the non-heparinized matrix (10.72±4.07%, p <0.05) and the BMP-2-free controls (5.60±1.47%). This suggested a beneficial effect of the biomimetic modification of Ecopore with heparinized collagen for bone healing and integration. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The phenomenon of developing depression after a stroke is fairly common in the literature (29%) but developing mania after a stroke is rare reportedly to be 1-2% of stroke survivors (Starkstein). One of the earliest descriptions of mania after stroke was described in 1989 of the right hemisphere (Starkstein). In 2011, a systematic review looking at 32 studies identified 49 cases describing symptoms of mania post-stroke. At initial presentation, 92% of these patients presented with elevated mood, 71% with increased rate of speech, 69% with insomnia and 63% with agitation (Santos). Mania is more common after strokes of the right hemisphere than the left hemisphere (Santos). There are a few cases in the literature reporting mania after left side infarct but nothing since 2019 (Jampla, Semiz, Fenn). In our case, we describe a case of 65 year old female with mania after left sided stroke. We report a case of a 65 year-old female with a history of major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, NSTEMI, chronic diastolic heart failure, and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy who was hospitalized for altered mental status and bilateral leg swelling. This patient presented with a two week history of behavioral activation, significant personality changes, emotional lability, fluctuating between states of extreme euphoria and tearfulness, grandiosity, and impulsive intrusiveness, speaking to strangers and hospital staff in inappropriately affectionate terms. She demonstrated a decrease need for sleep, and was noted to be easily irritated and hypersexual with others. She did not have a history of bipolar disorder. Prior to this hospitalization, she had been recently discharged from the cardiac care unit (CCU) after a five-day admission for chest pain, dyspnea, pneumonia, and NSTEMI. Neurology was consulted while patient was hospitalized and recommended imaging of the head for work-up of physiological causes of AMS. Computed tomagraphy (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans conducted during her hospitalization were remarkable for small, remote, left parietal and left inferior temporal infarcts; the patient nor the patient's family were aware of a previous history of cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Further workup by medical team was unremarkable for organic cause of altered mental status, and patient was subsequently transferred to the inpatient psychiatric facility. Over the course of her hospitalization, the patient was treated and stabilized on divalproex, olanzapine, and temazepam, with steady improvement in her manic symptoms. Patient was discharged after a 3 week-stay on the inpatient psychiatric unit and followed up with outpatient services, where improvement in her manic symptoms continued to be noted. Though her manic behavior improved, she developed depressive symptoms following her hospitalization, a feature often characteristic following manic episodes. She continues to be seen on an outpatient basis and was referred to the geriatric partial hospitalization program for further treatment. Please see below for the discussion in conclusions It is common practice to screen patients for depression after acute stroke due to the increased prevalence of the disease. This case illustrates the need for implementing mania screening in patients post stroke especially if there is involvement of the dominant hemisphere. This patient with no prior history of bipolar disorder presented with an acute presentation of mania followed by a course of depression after sustaining a stroke. Due to the rarity of the postroke mania, we suggest further studies to consider creating an accessible reporting tool for clinicians to record possible cases of mania after a stroke. This will be important diagnostically to appropriately treat patients in contrast to attributing the presentation to other diagnosis such as delirium or neurocognitive disorders. Background: Oncologic outcomes for patients with localized prostate cancer (PCa) undergoing radical prostatectomy (RP) can vary widely. Hypermethylation of tumor-associated genes has potential as a novel diagnostic tool and predictive biomarker in PCa. We investigated the methylation status of tumor-associated genes in patients who underwent RP., Methods: Patients who underwent RP during 2004 to 2008 were matched retrospectively based on post-operative D'Amico risk stratification. Quantitative pyrosequencing was used to analyze methylation status of 10 gene loci in cancerous and adjacent benign tissue from histological specimen. Follow-up was performed according to EAU guideline recommendations. Statistical analyses were performed to correlate methylation levels in cancerous and benign tissue with risk profiles and biochemical recurrence (BCR)., Results: The cohort included 71 patients: 22 low-risk, 22 intermediate-risk, and 27 high-risk. Mean follow-up time was 74 months. Methylation status differed significantly between cancerous and adjacent benign tissue for the 5 gene loci GSTP1, APC, RASSF1, TNFRFS10c, and RUNX3 (each P < 0.001). Also, the methylation level was significantly higher in high-risk than in low-risk patients for Endoglin2 and APC (P = 0.026; P = 0.032). Using ROC analysis, hypermethylation of APC in PCa tissue was associated with higher risk of BCR (P = 0.005)., Conclusion: Methylation status of various gene loci holds diagnostic and predictive potential in PCa. Hypermethylation of APC, RASSF1, TNFRFS10c and RUNX3 were identified as novel PCa-specific biomarkers. Furthermore, increased methylation levels of APC and Endoglin2 were associated with high-risk PCa. The spin precession frequency of muons stored in the (g-2) storage ring has been analyzed for evidence of Lorentz and CPT violation. Two Lorentz and CPT violation signatures were searched for a nonzero delta omega a(=omega a mu+ - omega a mu-) and a sidereal variation of omega a mu+/-). No significant effect is found, and the following limits on the standard-model extension parameters are obtained: bZ = -(1.0+/-1.1) x 10(-23) GeV; (m mu dZ0 + HXY)=(1.8+/-6.0) x 10(-23) GeV; and the 95% confidence level limits b perpendicular mu+ <1.4 x 10(-24) GeV and b perpendicular mu- <2.6 x 10(-24) GeV.

The anomalous magnetic moment of the negative muon has been measured to a precision of 0.7 ppm (ppm) at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. This result is based on data collected in 2001, and is over an order of magnitude more precise than the previous measurement for the negative muon. The result a(mu(-))=11 659 214(8)(3) x 10(-10) (0.7 ppm), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is consistent with previous measurements of the anomaly for the positive and the negative muon. The average of the measurements of the muon anomaly is a(mu)(exp)=11 659 208(6) x 10(-10) (0.5 ppm).

A higher precision measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu)=(g-2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, based on data collected in the year 2000. The result a(mu(+))=11 659 204(7)(5)x10(-10) (0.7 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error about one-half that of the combined previous data. The present world average experimental value is a(mu)(expt)=11 659 203(8)x10(-10) (0.7 ppm).

A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu) = (g-2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a(mu+) = 11 659 202(14) (6) x 10(-10) (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a(mu)(SM) = 11 659 159.6(6.7) x 10(-10) (0.57 ppm) and a(mu)(exp) - a(mu)(SM) = 43(16) x 10(-10) in which a(mu)(exp) is the world average experimental value.
