The Kondo effect describes the scattering of conduction electrons by magnetic impurities, manifesting as an electronic resonance at the Fermi energy with a distinctive temperature evolution. In this letter, we present a critical evaluation of the current methodology employed to demonstrate Kondo behavior in transport measurements, underscoring the limitations of established theoretical frameworks and the influence of extrinsic broadening. We introduce a novel approach for analyzing spectroscopic indicators of the Kondo effect, employing the Hurwitz-Fano lineshape as a model for the Kondo resonance in the presence of extrinsic broadening. Through precise scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on an exemplary spin-1/2 Kondo system, phenalenyl on Au(111), we demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed protocol in extracting accurate intrinsic Kondo linewidths from finite-temperature measurements. The extracted linewidths exhibit a robust fit with a recently derived expression for the temperature-dependent intrinsic Kondo linewidth, providing compelling evidence for the validity of the underlying theory., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; plus supplemental material (13 pages, 9 Figures)

We investigate the order of the QCD chiral transition in the limit of vanishing bare up/down quark masses and variations of the bare strange-quark mass $0 \le m_{\mathrm{s}} \le \infty$. In this limit and due to universality long range correlations with the quantum numbers of pseudoscalar and scalar mesons may dominate the physics. In order to study the interplay between the microscopic quark and gluon degrees of freedom and the long range correlations we extend a combination of lattice Yang--Mills theory and a (truncated) version of Dyson--Schwinger equations by also taking back-reactions of mesonic degrees of freedom into account. Both this system and the meson backcoupling approach have been studied extensively in the past but this is the first work in a full $(2 + 1)$-flavor setup. Starting from the physical point, we determine the chiral susceptibilities for decreasing up/down quark masses and find good agreement with both lattice and functional renormalization group results. We then proceed to determine the order of the chiral transition along the left-hand side of the Columbia plot, for chemical potentials in the range $-(30 \,\textrm{MeV})^2 \le \mu_q^2 \le (30 \,\textrm{MeV})^2$. We find a second-order phase transition throughout and no trace of a first-order region in the $N_{f} = 3$ corner of the Columbia plot. The quest to identify and observe Majorana fermions in physics and condensed-matter systems remains an important challenge. Here, we introduce a qubit (spin-$1/2$) from the occurrence of two delocalized zero-energy Majorana fermions in a model of two spins-$1/2$ on the Bloch sphere within the fractional one-half topological state. We address specific protocols in time with circularly polarized light and the protection of this delocalized spin-$1/2$ state related to quantum information protocols. We also show how disorder can play a positive and important role allowing singlet-triplet transitions and resulting in an additional elongated region for the fractional phase, demonstrating the potential of this platform related to applications in topologically protected quantum information. The sea breeze is a phenomenon frequently impacting Long Island, New York, especially during the spring and early summer, when land surface temperatures can exceed ocean temperatures considerably. The sea breeze influences daily weather conditions by causing a shift in wind direction and speed, limiting the maximum temperature, and occasionally serving as a trigger for precipitation and thunderstorms. Advance prediction of the presence or absence of the sea breeze for a certain location on a given day would therefore be beneficial to weather forecasters. To forecast sea breeze occurrence based on the previous night's weather conditions, we used a novel algorithm called the $D$-Basis. We analyzed sea breeze data from a recent four year period (2017-2020) at a single weather station several miles inland from the coast. High or constant station pressure, high or constant dew point, and onshore wind from the previous night were found to be strong predictors of sea breeze formation the following day. The accuracy of the prediction was around 74\% for June 2020. Unlike other prediction methods which involve the comparison of sea surface and land surface temperatures in near real time, our prediction method is based on the parameters from the prior night, allowing it to potentially aid in advanced forecasting of the sea breeze., Comment: 17 Figures, 12 Tables

We report on time-resolved coherent diffraction imaging of gas-phase silver nanoparticles, strongly heated via their plasmon resonance. The x-ray diffraction images reveal a broad range of phenomena for different excitation strengths, from simple melting over strong cavitation to explosive disintegration. Molecular dynamics simulations fully reproduce this behavior and show that the heating induces rather similar trajectories through the phase diagram in all cases, with the very different outcomes being due only to whether and where the stability limit of the metastable superheated liquid is crossed., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures (including supplemental material)

We consider Girsanov changes of measures that alter the intensity of point processes in a suitable way, e.g., for the probability reference approach in filtering. Such change of measure exists if a suitably related stochastic exponential involving the intended new target intensity process is a proper martingale. We show that the stochastic exponential is always a martingale when the point process is a Cox process. In doing so, we show how Watanabe's characterisation for conditional Poisson processes in terms of local martingales can be formulated as a necessary and sufficient condition., Comment: 10 pages

Phenalenyl is a radical nanographene with triangular shape that hosts an unpaired electron with spin S = 1/2. The open-shell nature of phenalenyl is expected to be retained in covalently bonded networks. Here, we study a first step in that direction and report the synthesis of the phenalenyl dimer by combining in-solution synthesis and on-surface activation and its characterization both on Au(111) and on a monolayer of NaCl on top of Au(111) by means of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). IETS shows inelastic steps that, together with a thorough theoretical analysis, are identified as the singlet-triplet excitation arising from interphenalenyl exchange. Two prominent features of our data permit to shed light on the nature of spin interactions in this system. First, the excitation energies with and without the NaCl decoupling layer are 48 and 41 meV, respectively, indicating a significant renormalization of the spin excitation energies due to exchange with the Au(111) electrons. Second, a position-dependent bias-asymmetry of the height of the inelastic steps is accounted for by an interphenalenyl hybridization of the singly occupied phenalenyl orbitals that is only possible via third neighbor hopping. This hybridization is also essential to activate kinetic interphenalenyl exchange. The possible occurrence of crystalline or inhomogeneous phases in the QCD phase diagram at large chemical potential has been under investigation for over thirty years. Such phases are present in models of QCD such as the Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions, Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and quark meson models. Yet, no unambiguous confirmation exists from actual QCD. In this work, we propose a new approach for a stability analysis that is based on the two-particle irreducible effective action and compatible with full QCD calculations within the framework of functional methods. As a first test, we reproduce a known NJL model result within this framework. We then discuss the additional difficulties which arise in QCD due to the non-locality of the quark self-energy and suggest a method to overcome them. As a proof of principle and as an illustration of the analysis, we consider the Wigner-Weyl solution of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) within a simple truncation of QCD in the chiral limit and analyse its stability against homogeneous chiral-symmetry breaking fluctuations. For temperatures above and below the tricritical point we find that the boundary of the instability region coincides well with the second-order phase boundary or the left spinodal, respectively, obtained from the direct solutions of the DSEs. We investigate the quality of the extrapolation procedure employed in Ref. [1] to extract the crossover line at real chemical potential from lattice data at imaginary potential. To this end we employ a functional approach that does not suffer from the sign problem. We utilize a well-studied combination of lattice Yang--Mills theory with a truncated set of Dyson--Schwinger equations in Landau gauge for $2 + 1$ quark flavors. This system predicts a critical endpoint at moderate temperatures and rather large (real) chemical potential with a curvature of the pseudo-critical transition line comparable to recent lattice extrapolations. We determine the light quark condensate and chiral susceptibility at imaginary chemical potentials and perform an analytic continuation along the lines described in [1]. We find that the analytically continued crossover line agrees very well (within one percent) with the explicitly calculated one for chemical potentials up to about 80 % of the one of the critical end point. The strong anharmonicity and high coherence times inherent to fluxonium superconducting circuits are beneficial for quantum information processing. In addition to requiring high-quality physical qubits, a quantum processor needs to be assembled in a manner that minimizes crosstalk and decoherence. In this paper, we report work on fluxonium qubits packaged in a flip-chip architecture, where a classical control and readout chip is bump-bonded to the quantum chip, forming a multi-chip module (MCM). The modular approach allows for improved connectivity between the qubits and control/readout elements, and separate fabrication processes. We characterize the coherence properties of the individual fluxonium qubits, demonstrate high fidelity single-qubit gates with 6 ns microwave pulses (without DRAG), and identify the main decoherence mechanisms to improve on the reported results.

We summarize recent results on the volume dependence of the location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram. To this end, we employ a sophisticated combination of Lattice Yang--Mills theory and a (truncated) version of Dyson--Schwinger equations in Landau gauge for $2 + 1$ quark flavours. We study this system at small and intermediate volumes and determine the dependence of the location of the critical endpoint on the boundary conditions and the volume of a three-dimensional cube with edge length $L$. Fusion of three benzene rings in a triangular fashion gives rise to the smallest open-shell graphene fragment, the phenalenyl radical, whose ${\pi}$-extension leads to an entire family of non-Kekul\'e triangular nanographenes with high-spin ground states. Here, we report the first synthesis of unsubstituted phenalenyl on a Au(111) surface, which is achieved by combining in-solution synthesis of the hydro-precursor and on-surface activation by atomic manipulation, using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Single-molecule structural and electronic characterization confirm its open-shell S = 1/2 ground state that gives rise to Kondo screening on the Au(111) surface. In addition, we compare the phenalenyl's electronic properties with those of triangulene, the second homolog in the series, whose S = 1 ground state induces an underscreened Kondo effect.
