Abstract

The associated production of Higgs and W bosons via vector-boson fusion is highly sensitive to the relative sign of the Higgs boson couplings to W and Z bosons. In this Letter, two searches for this process are presented, using 140  fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13  TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The first search targets scenarios with opposite-sign couplings of the W and Z bosons to the Higgs boson, while the second targets standard model-like scenarios with same-sign couplings. Both analyses consider Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks and W boson decays with an electron or muon. The data exclude the opposite-sign coupling hypothesis with a significance beyond 5σ, and the observed (expected) upper limit set on the cross section for vector-boson fusion WH production is 9.0 (8.7) times the standard model value at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Abstract

Measurements of jet cross-section ratios between inclusive bins of jet multiplicity are performed in 140  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions with s=13  TeV center-of-mass energy, recorded with the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. These ratios are constructed from double-differential cross-section measurements that are made in bins of jet multiplicity and other observables that are sensitive the energy scale and angular distribution of radiation due to the strong interaction in the final state. Additionally, the scalar sum of the two leading jets’ transverse momenta is measured triple differentially, in bins of the third jet’s transverse momentum and of jet multiplicity. These measurements are unfolded to account for acceptance and detector-related effects. The measured distributions are used to construct ratios of the inclusive jet-multiplicity bins, which have been shown to be sensitive to the strong coupling αS while being less sensitive than other observables to systematic uncertainties and parton distribution functions. The measured distributions are compared with state-of-the-art QCD calculations, including next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions for two- and three-jet events. These predictions are generally found to model the data well and perform best in bins with a modest requirement on the third jet’s transverse momentum. Significant differences between data and Monte Carlo predictions are observed in events with large rapidity gaps and invariant masses of the leading jet pair. Studies leading to reduced jet energy scale uncertainties significantly improve the precision of this work and are documented herein. © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Abstract

The inclusive cross section for the production of a single top quark in association with a W boson is measured using 140  fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at s=13  TeV. Events containing two charged leptons and at least one jet identified as originating from a b-quark are selected. A multivariate discriminant is constructed to separate the tW signal from the tt¯ background. The cross section is extracted using a profile likelihood fit to the signal and control regions and it is measured to be σtW=75−14+15  pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The measured cross section is used to extract a value for the left-handed form factor at the Wtb vertex times the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |fLVVtb| of 0.97±0.10. © 2024 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Abstract

This report reviews the published results of searches for possible additional scalar particles and exotic decays of the Higgs boson performed by the ATLAS Collaboration using up to 140 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton–proton collision data collected during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Key results are examined, and observed excesses, while never statistically compelling, are noted. Constraints are placed on parameters of several models which extend the Standard Model, for example by adding one or more singlet or doublet fields, or offering exotic Higgs boson decay channels. Summaries of new searches as well as extensions of previous searches are discussed. These new results have a wider reach or attain stronger exclusion limits. New experimental techniques that were developed for these searches are highlighted. Search channels which have not yet been examined are also listed, as these provide insight into possible future areas of exploration.

Abstract

This paper reports a summary of searches for a fermionic dark matter candidate in the context of theoretical models characterised by a mediator particle exchange in the s-channel. The data sample considered consists of pp collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider during its Run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to up to 140 fb-1. The interpretations of the results are based on simplified models where the new mediator particles can be spin-0, with scalar or pseudo-scalar couplings to fermions, or spin-1, with vector or axial-vector couplings to fermions. Exclusion limits are obtained from various searches characterised by final states with resonant production of Standard Model particles, or production of Standard Model particles in association with large missing transverse momentum.

Abstract

The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Therefore, our research contributes to a deeper understanding of terrestrial biomass distribution and how environmental changes and disturbances impact forest ecosystems.

Abstract

Abstract: The ratio of branching ratios of the W boson to muons and electrons, $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W={{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow \mu u )}$$ R W μ / e = B ( W → μ ν ) /$${{\mathcal {B}}(W\rightarrow eu )}$$ B ( W → e ν ) , has been measured using $$140\,\text{ fb}^{-1}\,$$ 140 fb - 1 of pp collision data at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ s = 13  $$\text {T}\text {e}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ Te V collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, probing the universality of lepton couplings. The ratio is obtained from measurements of the $$t\bar{t}$$ t t ¯ production cross-section in the ee, $$e\mu $$ e μ and $$\mu \mu $$ μ μ dilepton final states. To reduce systematic uncertainties, it is normalised by the square root of the corresponding ratio $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ R Z μ μ / e e for the Z boson measured in inclusive $$Z\rightarrow ee$$ Z → e e and $$Z\rightarrow \mu \mu $$ Z → μ μ events. By using the precise value of $$R^{\,\mu \mu /ee}_Z$$ R Z μ μ / e e determined from $$e^+e^-$$ e + e - colliders, the ratio $$R^{\,\mu /e}_W$$ R W μ / e is determined to be $$\begin{aligned} R^{\,\mu /e}_W&= 0.9995\pm 0.0022\,\mathrm {(stat)}\,\pm 0.0036\,\mathrm {(syst)}\\ &\quad \pm 0.0014\,\mathrm {(ext)} . \end{aligned}$$ R W μ / e = 0.9995 ± 0.0022 ( stat ) ± 0.0036 ( syst ) ± 0.0014 ( ext ) . Abstract

Abstract: Pixel sensors in 3D technology equip the outer ends of the staves of the Insertable B Layer (IBL), the innermost layer of the ATLAS Pixel Detector, which was installed before the start of LHC Run 2 in 2015. 3D pixel sensors are expected to exhibit more tolerance to radiation damage and are the technology of choice for the innermost layer in the ATLAS tracker upgrade for the HL-LHC programme. While the LHC has delivered an integrated luminosity of  ≃ 235 fb-1 since the start of Run 2, the 3D sensors have received a non-ionising energy deposition corresponding to a fluence of ≃ 8.5 × 1014 1 MeV neutron-equivalent cm-2 averaged over the sensor area. This paper presents results of measurements of the 3D pixel sensors' response during Run 2 and the first two years of Run 3, with predictions of its evolution until the end of Run 3 in 2025. Data are compared with radiation damage simulations, based on detailed maps of the electric field in the Si substrate, at various fluence levels and bias voltage values. These results illustrate the potential of 3D technology for pixel applications in high-radiation environments.

Abstract

Results from a wide range of searches targeting different experimental signatures with and without missing transverse momentum (ETmiss) are used to constrain a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) with an additional pseudo-scalar mediating the interaction between ordinary and dark matter (2HDM+a). The analyses use up to 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2015-2018. The results from three of the most sensitive searches are combined statistically. These searches target signatures with large ETmiss and a leptonically decaying Z boson; large ETmiss and a Higgs boson decaying to bottom quarks; and production of charged Higgs bosons in final states with top and bottom quarks, respectively. Constraints are derived for several common and new benchmark scenarios in the 2HDM+a.

Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) simulations of the structure of liquid crystal (LC) torons, topologically protected distortions of the LC director field, under material flows are rare but essential in microfluidic applications. Here, we show that torons adopt a steady-state configuration at low flow velocity before disintegrating at higher velocities, in line with experimental results. Furthermore, we show that under partial slip conditions at the boundaries, the flow induces a reversible elongation of the torons, also consistent with the experimental observations. These results are in contrast with previous simulation results for 2D skyrmions under similar flow conditions, highlighting the need for a 3D description of this LC soliton in relation to its coupling to the material flow. These findings pave the way for future studies of other topological solitons, like hopfions and heliknotons, in flowing soft matter systems.

Abstract

We perform the first search for ultralight dark matter using a magnetically levitated particle. A sub-millimeter permanent magnet is levitated in a superconducting trap with a measured force sensitivity of $0.2\,\mathrm{fN/\sqrt{Hz}}$. We find no evidence of a signal and derive limits on dark matter coupled to the difference between baryon and lepton number, $B - L$, in the mass range $(1.10360 \text{ - } 1.10485) \times 10^{-13}\,\mathrm{eV} / c^2$. Our most stringent limit on the coupling strength is $g_{B - L} \lesssim 2.98 \times 10^{-21}$. We propose the POLONAISE (Probing Oscillations using Levitated Objects for Novel Accelerometry in Searches of Exotic physics) experiment, featuring short-, medium-, and long-term upgrades that will give us leading sensitivity in a wide mass range and demonstrating the promise of this novel quantum sensing technology in the hunt for dark matter., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, 4 appendices

Abstract

The adoption of microservice architecture has seen a considerable upswing in recent years, mainly driven by the need to modernize legacy systems and address their limitations. Legacy systems, typically designed as monolithic applications, often struggle with maintenance, scalability, and deployment inefficiencies. This study investigates the motivations, activities, and challenges associated with migrating from monolithic legacy systems to microservices, aiming to shed light on common practices and challenges from a practitioner's point of view. We conducted a comprehensive study with 53 software practitioners who use microservices, expanding upon previous research by incorporating diverse international perspectives. Our mixed-methods approach includes quantitative and qualitative analyses, focusing on four main aspects: (i) the driving forces behind migration, (ii) the activities to conduct the migration, (iii) strategies for managing data consistency, and (iv) the prevalent challenges. Thus, our results reveal diverse practices and challenges practitioners face when migrating to microservices. Companies are interested in technical benefits, enhancing maintenance, scalability, and deployment processes. Testing in microservice environments remains complex, and extensive monitoring is crucial to managing the dynamic nature of microservices. Database management remains challenging. While most participants prefer decentralized databases for autonomy and scalability, challenges persist in ensuring data consistency. Additionally, many companies leverage modern cloud technologies to mitigate network overhead, showcasing the importance of cloud infrastructure in facilitating efficient microservice communication.

Abstract

This note proposes a new type of Parallel Distributed Controller (PDC) for Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models. Our idea consists of using two control terms based on state feedback, one composed of a convex combination of linear gains weighted by the normalized membership grade, as in traditional PDC, and the other composed of linear gains weighted by the time-derivatives of the membership functions. We present the design conditions as Linear Matrix Inequalities, solvable through numerical optimization tools. 66. Constrained volume-difference site percolation model on the square lattice

Abstract

We study a percolation model with restrictions on the opening of sites on the square lattice. In this model, each site $s \in \mathbb{Z}^{2}$ starts closed and an attempt to open it occurs at time $t=t_s$, where $(t_s)_{s \in \mathbb{Z}^2}$ is a sequence of independent random variables uniformly distributed on the interval $[0,1]$. The site will open if the volume difference between the two largest clusters adjacent to it is greater than or equal to a constant $r$ or if it has at most one adjacent cluster. Through numerical analysis, we determine the critical threshold $t_c(r)$ for various values of $r$, verifying that $t_c(r)$ is non-decreasing in $r$ and that there exists a critical value $r_c=5$ beyond which percolation does not occur. Additionally, we find that the correlation length exponent of this model is equal to that of the ordinary percolation model. For $t = 1$ and $1 \leq r \leq 9$, we estimate the averages of the density of open sites, the number of distinct cluster volumes, and the volume of the largest cluster.

67. Native defects and $p$-type dopability in transparent $\beta$-TeO$_2$: A first-principles study

Abstract

Although $\beta$-TeO$_2$ is a promising $p$-type transparent conducting oxide (TCO) due to the large optical gap ($\sim$ 3.7 eV) and a light effective hole mass, its hole dopability still remains unexplored. In this work, electronic structure of $\beta$-TeO$_2$ and its point defects are investigated using the HSEsol functional with the band-gap-tuned mixing parameter. Our calculations reveal that $\beta$-TeO$_2$ exhibits a significant difference between the fundamental and optical band gaps because lower energy optical transitions are dipole forbidden. Additionally, it has a low hole effective mass, especially in-plane. The point defect calculations show that $\beta$-TeO$_2$ is intrinsically an insulator. From systematic calculations of the trivalent dopants as well as hydrogen, Bi doping is suggested as the best candidate as an acceptor dopant. This work paves the way for the material design of the $p$-type $\beta$-TeO$_2$.

Abstract

This article presents constraints on dark-matter-electron interactions obtained from the first underground data-taking campaign with multiple SuperCDMS HVeV detectors operated in the same housing. An exposure of 7.63 g-days is used to set upper limits on the dark-matter-electron scattering cross section for dark matter masses between 0.5 and 1000 MeV/$c^2$, as well as upper limits on dark photon kinetic mixing and axion-like particle axioelectric coupling for masses between 1.2 and 23.3 eV/$c^2$. Compared to an earlier HVeV search, sensitivity was improved as a result of an increased overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent, an anticoincidence event selection, and better pile-up rejection. 69. Tiling Spaces and the Expanding Universe: Bridging Quantum Mechanics and Cosmology

Abstract

We propose a heuristic model of the universe as a growing quasicrystal projected from a higher-dimensional lattice. This quasicrystalline framework offers a novel perspective on cosmic expansion, where the intrinsic growth dynamics naturally give rise to the observed large-scale expansion of the universe. Motivated by this model, we explore the Schr\"odinger equation for a particle in a box with time-dependent boundaries, representing the expanding underlying space. By introducing a constraint that links microscale quantum phenomena with macroscale cosmological quantities, we derive an equation resembling the Friedmann equation, providing potential insights into the Hubble tension. Our model incorporates phonons and phasons-quasiparticles inherent in quasicrystalline structures-that play critical roles in cosmic-scale dynamics and the universe's expansion. This framework suggests that the necessity for an inflationary period may be obviated. Furthermore, phonons arising from the quasicrystalline structure may serve as dark matter candidates, influencing the dynamics of ordinary matter while remaining largely undetectable through electromagnetic interactions. Drawing parallels with crystalline matter at atomic scales, which is fundamentally quantum in nature, we explore how the notion of tiling space can support continuous symmetry atop a discrete structure. This provides a novel framework for understanding the universe's expansion and underlying structure. Consequently, our approach suggests that further development could enhance our understanding of cosmic expansion and the universe's structure, bridging concepts from quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, and cosmology.

70. Convexity of noncontextual wirings and how they order the set of correlations

Abstract

The resource theory of contextuality considers resourceful objects to be probabilistic data-tables, known as correlations or behaviors, that fail to have an explanation in terms of Kochen-Specker noncontextual models. In this work, we advance this resource theory, considering free operations to be noncontextual wirings (NCW). We show that all such wirings form a convex set. When restricted to Bell scenarios, we show that such wirings are not equivalent to local operations assisted by a common source of classical shared randomness (LOSR). The set of all NCW operations contains LOSR, but is strictly larger. We also prove several elementary facts about how different resources can be converted via NCW. As a concrete example, we show that there are pairs of behaviors that cannot be converted one into the other using NCW.
