Purpose: This article reports a case in which a recently extracted tooth was used as a natural tooth pontic bonded to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth using a Ribbond ribbon. Materials and Methods: A bondable, reinforcing polyethylene ribbon was used to bond a natural tooth pontic to adjacent teeth. Results: Acceptable esthetics were obtained and the result was satisfactory for the patient. Conclusion: After one year of clinical use, direct construction of a single-tooth replacement using the natural tooth pontic still provided satisfactory esthetics and function. The technology which makes this adhesive restoration possible is the development of a high strength, high molecular weight, biocompatible polyethylene fiber. The aim of this study was to evaluate nanoleakage within the different lesion-sealing therapies applied to artificial non-cavitated enamel lesions. Thirty-two human anterior teeth were used. Artificial subsurface enamel lesions were produced on the labial surfaces of teeth. The specimens were then randomly divided into three groups (n=10): Group I- Clinpro Sealant application; Group II- ExciTE F adhesive resin application; and Group III- ICON resin infiltrant application. Each group was further divided into two subgroups: control and thermocycler. Nanoleakage was calculated by the digital image analysis software. In the control and thermocycled groups, there was no statistically significant difference between the Groups I, II, and III (p>0.05). The only significant leakage scores were obtained between the Group III control and thermocycler groups (p=0.027). ICON infiltrant can be used as an alternative to dental adhesives and fissure sealants in the sealing of initial non-cavitated enamel lesions. But the resin may become more affected by the water sorption than other resin materials over time. More studies are needed to evaluate long-term durability of resin infiltrants. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP)-based primer on the shear bond strengths of thermally aged self-adhesive and conventional adhesive resin cements and zinc phosphate cement to zirconia and lithium disilicate substructures. Sixty zirconia (Z) and 60 lithium disilicate (L) disk specimens were cut from ceramic blocks. Each group was divided into six subgroups (n = 10). Half of the specimens of each ceramic group were treated with primer (P) and the other half was remained untreated. Three types of cement were applied: zinc phosphate cement [(ZPC) (Hoffmann Harmonic Shades)]; self-adhesive resin cement [(SAC) (RelyX U200)]; conventional adhesive resin cement [(CAC) (C&B)]. The specimens were subjected to thermal aging procedure for 1 week under 37 °C water bath. Shear bond strength (SBS) was determined using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were analyzed with three-way (ANOVA). Pairwise comparisons and interactions between groups were analyzed by using Tukey’s simultaneous confidence intervals. There was no significant difference between the SBS values of SAC-Z (11,47 ± 0,47) and SAC-ZP (11,39 ± 0,42) (p > 0.05). However, the SBS values of SAC-L (12.34 ± 0,55) and SAC-LP (12,50 ± 0,49) were significantly higher than those of SAC-Z and SAC-ZP (p < 0.00). The use of primer significantly increased the SBS value of CAC-ZP (8,05 ± 0,55) when compared to the SBS value of CAC-Z (3,53 ± 0,41) (p < 0.00). Resin cement that contains methacrylate monomers with phosphoric ester functional groups exhibited reliable bond to zirconia. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Polymethyl-vinyl-ether-co-maleic anhydride (PVM/MA), called Gantrez AN, on interfacial fracture toughness (KIC) of self-etch and etch-and-rinse dental adhesives. Sixty-five chevron-notched dentin-composite resin specimens were prepared. The following testing groups with different bonding agents were prepared and tested with a cross head speed of 0.1 mm/min: Clearfil SE (CF); Clearfil SE with Gantrez AN in primer (CFGp); Clearfil SE with Gantrez AN in bonding agent (CFG); Prime & Bond (PB); Prime & Bond with Gantrez AN (PBG). The KIC values were determined and compared. The mode of failure was examined with light microscopy. The mean KIC (standard deviation) of the Clearfil SE groups were 0.60 (0.09) MPa m1/2 for CF, 0.64 (0.09) MPa m1/2 for CFGp and 0.68 (0.16) MPa m1/2 for CFG. The most common mode of fracture was cohesive. The mean KIC (standard deviation) of the Prime & Bond groups were 0.63 (0.09) MPa m1/2 for PB and 0.41 (0.11) MPa m1/2 for PBG. Adhesive fracture most commonly occurred in the Prime & Bond groups. Gantrez AN did not adversely affect KIC of the self-etch dental adhesive, but lowered KIC of the etch-and-rinse adhesive. Addition of Gantrez AN to self-etch adhesive (CF) may be warranted to produce an antibacterial effect. Clinical studies of bacterial attachment and anti-bacterial effects to further justify the use of Gantrez AN in bonding agents are warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the effect of fluoride varnish with added casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate on the shear bond strength (SBS) of two adhesive systems to enamel. Specimens obtained from permanent teeth were randomly distributed among four groups for enamel pretreatment [Control (no treatment, CNT), Duraphat varnish (DV), Clinpro White varnish (CWV), MI Varnish (MIV)], and each group was further divided into two subgroups according to adhesive [Etch&rinse (Adper Single Bond, ASB), self-etch (Clearfil SE Bond, CSE)]. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h. Cylindrical composite specimens (2.3 mm in diameter, 3.0 mm in height) were then bonded to the enamel surfaces. SBS tests were performed and data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s tests. For both CSE and ASB, SBS values of the CNT groups were significantly higher than those of all the enamel pretreatment groups (p < 0.05). Among the enamel pretreatment groups, SBS values with both adhesive systems were lowest in the MIV groups, followed by CWV and DV groups. In conclusion, pretreatment of enamel surfaces with fluoride-containing varnishes reduced bonding performance of adhesive systems to enamel. Objective:This study investigated the effect of saliva contamination and cleansing effect of a self-etching primer (SEP), phosphoric acid (PA), chlorhexidine (CHX), and ethanol (EtOH) on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of a fiber post cemented with a self-adhesive resin cement (SAC) to root canal dentin. Material and methods:Sixty human lower premolar roots were randomly divided into 10 groups: (1) no saliva contamination, no cleansing (Control); (2) no saliva contamination, cleansing with SEP (NC-SEP); (3) no saliva contamination, cleansing with PA (NC-PA); (4) no saliva contamination, cleansing with CHX (NC-CHX); (5) no saliva contamination, cleansing with EtOH (NC-EtOH); (6) with saliva contamination, no cleansing (SC-NC); (7) with saliva contamination, cleansing with SEP (SC-SEP); (8) with saliva contamination, cleansing with PA (SC-PA); (9) with saliva contamination, cleansing with CHX (SC-CHX); (10) with saliva contamination, cleansing with EtOH (SC-EtOH). After cementation of posts, the roots were transversally sectioned to obtain six slices (n = 36) followed by μTBS test. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (p = 0.05). Results:Saliva contamination and cleansing methods had a significant effect on μTBS values (p < 0.0001). All cleansing agents improved bond strengths when compared with Control and SC-NC. Cleansing with CHX and ethanol showed lower μTBS values than phosphoric acid and SEP, regardless of saliva contamination (p < 0.05). Conclusions:Saliva contamination negatively affected bonding performance of SAC to root dentin. However; SEP, PA, CHX and EtOH can be used on contaminated dentin surfaces to optimize bonding performance of self-adhesive cements. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Microtensile bond strengths of current dentin adhesives to intact and decalcified root surfaces were evaluated. Two hundred and twenty-four extracted human incisors were divided into two groups as intact (IRD) and decalcified (DRD). The roots of DRD teeth were placed in a demineralization solution to produce artificial carious-like lesions. Root surfaces were slightly ground and treated with either Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SMP), Adper Single Bond Plus (SBP), Adper Easy Bond (AEB), Scotchbond SE (SSE), Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), Clearfil Protect Bond (CPB), Clearfil Tri-S Bond (CTS), FL-Bond II (FLB), XP Bond (XPB), iBond (IB), AdheSE Bond (ASE), Optibond Solo Plus (OSP), Prelude Dental Adhesive (PDA), and G-Bond (GB). Composite build-ups were formed on the bonded surfaces. After thermocycling, hour-glass shaped specimens with an area of 1 mm2at the bonded interface were subjected to microtensile testing. Resin–dentin interfaces were observed with SEM. Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney-U tests were used for statistical analysis. There was not significant difference between bond strengths to intact and decalcified dentin, with the exception of ASE and CSE, which had higher values to IRD (p < 0.05). SSE and CTS were the adhesives that showed higher bond strengths to DRD than to IRD, however the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of zirconia core thickness on the biaxial flexural strength values of zirconia-porcelain bilayered discs. A total of 60 discs with 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 mm thickness were obtained from a fully sintered zirconia block. A 1.5-mm thick layer of veneer porcelain was fired on the zirconia specimens and biaxial flexural strength tests were performed on the bilayered discs. In each group, the loading surface was the veneer porcelain in half of the specimens (core in tension) and the zirconia core surface in the other half (core in compression). The zirconia core thickness had no effect on the biaxial flexural strength of zirconiaporcelain bilayered discs when the core was in tension (p>0.05). Whereas, when the core was in compression, an increase in the zirconia core thickness resulted in an increase in the biaxial flexural strength (p<0.05). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate surface roughness (Ra) and morphology of supra-nanofilled [Estelite Omega (EO),Estelite Σ Quick (EQ)], micro-hybrid [Esthet.X HD (EHD), G-aenial (GAE)] and nano-hybrid [Clearfil Majesty Posterior (CMP),Charisma Diamond (CD), Beautifil II (BII)] composites polished with two-step polishing systems [Enhance/PoGo (EP); Venus Supra(VS)]. Composite discs, 30 of each type, were prepared. Each composite group was divided into three subgroups: Mylar (control), EPand VS. Ra was evaluated with profilometer. In each composite group, the control had the lowest Ra. With both polishing systems,EO and EQ had significantly the lowest Ra, whereas CMP and BII had the highest. Except for GAE, CD and BII, the differences in Rabetween EP and VS in each composite group were significant, showing smoother surfaces for EP. Supra-nanofRled composites createdsmoother surfaces than nano-hybrids, and their performance was similar or slightly better than that of micro-hybrids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adhesive dentistry is key to minimally invasive, esthetic, and tooth-preserving dental restorations. These are typically realized by bonding various restorative materials, such as composite resins, ceramics, or even metal alloys, to tooth structures or other materials with composite resin luting agents. For optimal bond strengths and long-lasting clinical success, however, these material and tooth substrates require their respective pretreatment steps, based on their natures and compositions. Today, dental adhesion is used in almost all dental specialties. This article summarizes key aspects and guidelines for clinical success with adhesive dentistry and summarizes information presented at the 5th International Congress on Adhesive Dentistry. Current adhesive systems follow either an "etch-and-rinse" or "self-etch" approach, which differ in how they interact with natural tooth structures. Etch-and-rinse systems comprise phosphoric acid to pretreat the dental hard tissues before rinsing and subsequent application of an adhesive. Self-etch adhesives contain acidic monomers, which etch and prime the tooth simultaneously. Etch-and-rinse adhesives are offered as two- or three-step systems, depending on whether primer and bonding are separate or combined in a single bottle. Similarly, self-etch adhesives are available as one- or two-step systems. Both etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems form a hybrid layer as a result of resins impregnating the porous enamel or dentin. Despite current trends toward fewer and simpler clinical application steps, one-step dentin bonding systems exhibit lower bond strengths and seem less predictable than multi-step etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems. The varying evidence available today suggests that the choice between etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems is often a matter of personal preference. In general, however, phosphoric acid creates a more pronounced and retentive etching pattern in enamel. Therefore, etch-and-rinse bonding systems are often preferred for indirect restorations and when large areas of enamel are still present. Conversely, self-etch adhesives provide superior and more predictable bond strength to dentin and are, consequently, recommended for direct composite resin restorations, especially when predominantly supported by dentin. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of self-etching primers/adhesives by direct contact and dentin barrier tests. The three two-step self-etching systems Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), Clearfil Protect Bond (CPB), Prime&Bond NT/NRC (PB) and one-step self-etching systems Reactmer Bond (RB), Clearfil Tri-S Bond (CTS), and Adper Prompt L-Pop (AP) were examined. In direct contact tests, L929 cells were cultured in the presence of diluted solutions (50, 20, 10, and 1%) of primer/conditioner of adhesive systems. For dentin barrier tests, each system was applied onto 0.5 or 1.5 mm thick human dentin assembled in a simple pulp chamber device and incubated for 24 h at 37°C to make the diffusive components contact the L929 cells placed at the bottom of the chamber. The cytotoxic effects were assessed by MTT assay. Cell culture without application of any primers/adhesives served as the control for both tests. One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical analyses. The direct contact tests demonstrated that CSE and CPB were less toxic than the other materials at all dilutions. In the dentin barrier tests, toxic effects of materials were reduced with an increase in thickness of intervening dentin. CSE and CPB showed less cytotoxicity than the other adhesives (p<0.05) when applied to 0.5 mm-thick dentin, and CSE was the least toxic in the 1.5 mm-dentin group (p<0.05). Dentin thickness positively affected biocompatibility of the tested bonding systems. Two-step self-etching systems with HEMA-based primers were more biocompatible than other self-etching adhesives. Purpose: To evaluate the bond strength of recently developed feldspathic veneering ceramics to zirconium- oxide ceramic core material (Y-TZP). In addition, the effect of thermocycling on the bond strength was investigated. Methods: 90 square Lava framework Y-TZP specimens were randomly assigned to three groups (n=30) and veneered with one of the three zirconia veneering ceramics Cerabien ZR (CZR), GC Initial (Gd), or Lava Ceram (LC). 30 additional metal-ceramic specimens served as the control (VO). 15 specimens per group were stored in a saline solution for 3 days. To test the durability of the bond, 15 specimens per group were thermocycled for 10,000 cycles between 5° to 60° C with a 15-second dwell time. Shear strength was tested with an Instron universal testing system. A two-way ANOVA model and Tukey's HSD were applied for statistical analyses (α= 0.05). Results: The different material combinations revealed significantly different shear bond strength values (CZR>GCI>LC>VO). All veneering ceramic/zirconia combinations showed significantly higher bond strength than the metal-ceramic control VO. Bond strength values were not affected by thermocycling, except for CZR, which had significantly higher bond strength after thermocycling. Microscopic evaluation of failure modes revealed 100% cohesive failures in the veneering ceramic for all specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
