Abstract

Microcosm experiments help analyze the influence of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the attachment of five Pseudomonas strains, three strains expressing enzymes to hydrolyze SDS and two without the enzymes, to riverine sediment. The addition of SDS stimulates the attachment of bacteria to sediments having biodegradation-competent strains, while SDS addition exerts no influence on the weak attachment of biodegradation-incompetent strains. The stimulation accompanies fast biodegradation of the surfactant producing an intermediate, dodecan-1-ol.

Abstract

Colorado Tick Fever Virus (CTFV) is the type species of the genus Coltivirus of the family Reoviridae, and the causative agent of Colorado tick fever (CTF). CTF is characterized by a diphasic fever lasting up to 10 days, flulike syndromes including chills, headache, and myalgia, as well as retroorbital pain and photophobia. Up to 10% of pediatric patients infected with CTFV can develop severe manifestations that affect the central nervous system, such as meningitis or encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever, and death. Although this disease can be severe, no drug therapy exists for CTF, and there is little information on the mechanisms underlying CTFV induced pathology during infection. This study shows that CTFV induces specific ultrastructural changes in monkey cells (Vero) that are not observed in human dermal endothelial cells (HMEC-1). We describe CTFV-induced fibers commonly seen in Vero cells that are not present in HMEC-1 endothelium, as well as ultrastructural changes associated with both cell types. 67. Exploring the interrelationship between anxiety, interpretation bias and parenting factors in military families

Abstract

Theoretical frameworks suggest that increased anxiety symptoms are associated with a cognitive interpretation bias; anxious individuals are more likely to interpret ambiguous information as threatening and dangerous. Several models have considered the role of parents and parenting in the aetiology of cognitive biases that place children at increased risk for the development of anxiety. For example, parenting characterised by overprotection/emotional overinvolvement and over control has been associated with anxiety disorders in children. The present research explored the association between parent and child anxiety, interpretation biases and parent-child relationships within military families, a population at greater risk of experiencing enduring anxiety. Twenty children aged 8-11 years and their mothers reported their anxiety symptoms and completed a homophone task. Words could be interpreted as either threatening or non-threatening and were categorised into separation and general threat themes. Parents also completed the Five Minute Speech Sample, where they expressed thoughts and feelings about their child. Results revealed that parent and child anxiety was significantly positively correlated as expected. Children’s anxious cognitions were significantly positively correlated to self-reported and maternal anxiety (ps<.05). In contrast to the expected hypothesis, children and parent interpretation biases were not significantly correlated. Although the research set out to examine the extent to which interpretation biases could act as a mediator between parenting and child anxiety, evidence for a mediated pathway could not be established within the present research. The impact of these findings are discussed with particular reference to the importance of understanding the aetiology of anxiety and exploring the role of the intergenerational transmission of anxiety.

Abstract

Objective: To characterise the out-of-hours cover of Cardiac-Surgical Intensive Care Units in Australia, the experience of covering physicians in the training, and management of, cardiac arrest after cardiac surgery, and to describe a novel educational course. Design: Nighttime phone survey with doctors on public cardiac intensive care units across Australia. Members of nursing, intensive care, and cardiac surgery staff, devised a dedicated halfday course to address the principles of managing a cardiac arrest post-cardiac surgery. Setting: Tertiary teaching hospital in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Patients and Participants: No patient data used. Qualitative and quantitative feedback from doctors covering intensive care units, and participants, on a pilot course designed to formally train medical and nursing personnel in the management of cardiac arrest after cardiac surgery. Interventions: Design and implementation of a new training course. Measurements and Results: We demonstrated wide variation in the availability of training opportunities in Cardiac-surgical Unit-Advanced Life Support, with few units having cardiothoracic surgical doctors on site at night, and the majority of units being covered by a registrar grade, intensive care trainee, out-of-hours. Our pilot course was feasible, well received, and demonstrated improvements in candidates' confidence in managing cardiac arrests, and their ability to perform, or assist with, emergency resternotomy. Conclusions: The experience of doctors covering cardiac intensive care units varies greatly. There is a lack of dedicated guidelines covering the management of cardiac arrest in the postcardiac surgical population, with wide variability in whether institutions offer training for this emergency, and how frequently these opportunities are available. There is also a lack of trained medical staff on-site, out-of-hours, able to perform emergency re-sternotomy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Biodegradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP) has been shown to occur as a series of sequential steps common to the degradation of all phthalates. Primary degradation of DEP to phthalic acid (PA) has been reported to involve the hydrolysis of each of the two diethyl chains of the phthalate to produce the monoester monoethyl phthalate (MEP) and then PA. However, in soil co-contaminated with DEP and MeOH, biodegradation of the phthalate to PA resulted in the formation of three compounds, in addition to MEP. These were characterised by gas chromatography-electron ionisation mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance as ethyl methyl phthalate, dimethyl phthalate and monomethyl phthalate, and indicated the existence of an alternative pathway for the degradation of DEP in Soil co-contaminated with MeOH. Transesterification or demethylation were proposed as the mechanisms for the formation of the three compounds, although the 7:1 ratio of H2O to MeOH means that transesterification is unlikely.
