West African cuisine has long been known for its distinct ingredients and flavours, often enhanced by the addition of a large and diverse range of plant foods. A traditional meal comprises a starchy staple cooked in a pot and served with a sauce prepared from vegetables, fish and/or meat, often accompanied by pulses. However, reconstructing the antiquity of the full range of plant use by ancient peoples, using archaeobotanical remains, in West Africa is challenging due to their somewhat fragile nature. Hence, there is a strong bias toward food plants that survive in charred condition, rendering invisible those that easily decompose, such as leafy plants and tubers. Here, we combine organic residue analysis of 458 prehistoric vessels, with archaeobotanical evidence from ten sites of the prehistoric Nok culture, Nigeria, spanning a period of around 1500 years, beginning around the middle of the second millennium BC and terminating in the last century BC. Our results reveal a range of highly diverse and complex lipid distributions denoting the preparation and processing of various plant types, including leafy vegetables or ‘greens’, cereals, pulses and underground storage organs, possibly yams. Here, we render previously unidentifiable leafy plant use visible and suggest an early origin for the plant component of modern-day West African cuisine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of organic residues should ensure a sufficient air capacity (AC) and plant available water capacity (AWC) to improve the soil aeration and water supply for plant roots, whereas the air permeability (ka) primarily depends on the number of functional and, therefore, connected pores. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of digestates derived from maize (Zea mays L.), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in ratios of 100%, 80%, and 20%, respectively; compost of shrub debris; and sewage sludge on AC, AWC, and ka values, including the pore continuity indices (c2, c3) of a loamy Ap horizon of a haplic Luvisol. The results indicate that AC values increase from 0.142 of up to 0.191 cm3 cm−3, but pore continuities and AWC values decrease from 0.143 down to 0.111 cm3 cm−3, except for wheat-containing digestate (20w80b), which shows an opposite trend. The application of organic residues can compensate low AC values but not the AWC values. The wheat-containing digestate should be preferred for improving the water-holding capacity and, therefore, the water supply for plant roots.

In agricultural land use, organic residues such as compost, digestate, and sewage sludge are discussed as costeffective soil conditioner that may improve the water holding capacity and crop available soil moisture. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of application of digestates with different compositions in maize, sugar beet and winter wheat, compost of shrub debris and sewage sludge on shrinkage behaviour and contact angle of till-derived loamy topsoil of a Haplic Luvisol under agricultural use. Novelty is the simultaneous determination of contact angle and shrinkage of soils amended with digestates composed of different composition in maize, sugar beet and winter wheat, compost of shrub debris and sewage sludge. The results suggest that the application of organic residues impacts the air capacity, while the contact angles remained in the subcritical range between > 0° and < 90°. The relationship between CA values and moisture ratios, ϑ, during proportional shrinkage was positive and linear (r2 of 0.98) and negative during residual- and zero-shrinkage (r2 of 0.93).

The invasion of the macroalgae Rugulopteryx okamurae is causing several environmental and economic problems along Spanish Mediterranean coasts. The use of composts based on R. okamurae as a peat alternative in nursery production could be a valid alternative for the exploitation of this organic material. The present study evaluated three different composts as peat substitutes in potting media to grow tomato seedlings: compost of R. okamurae, compost of green horticultural residues (two-thirds) and R. okamurae (one-third), compost of garden pruning residues (two-thirds) and R. okamurae (one-third). Each compost was used to formulate two different substrates to reduce the use of peat (40% compost, 40% peat, 20% perlite) or entirely substitute it (80% compost, 20% perlite), using a control treatment with 80% peat and 20% perlite. Only the control treatment received mineral fertigation during the trial. The results showed that the high initial electrical conductivity and ion concentration were remarkably reduced thanks to the fast leaching of salt that occurred with customary irrigation. Generally, compost-based treatments allowed us to obtain tomato seedlings with satisfactory morphological parameters. The substrates that contained 40% compost of R. okamurae or a compost of garden pruning residues and R. okamurae led to the best results in term of seedling parameters. It is therefore concluded that composts based on R. okamuare could be used as a seedling growing medium for the valorization of algae.

Phosphorus availability and acid pH are major limiting factors for grass and crop production in the Andisols of Southern Chile. Sustainable management requires both the efficient use of fertilizers and the recycling of agricultural waste. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of citrus waste, alone or in combination with beef cattle manure (CM), on phosphorus availability. Controlled laboratory incubations were carried out for up to six weeks. Lemon (L) and mandarin (M) fruit wastes were added to an Andisol, amended or not with dried CM. Fruit parts (Peel, Juice or whole fruit), and for whole fruit the size of the fruit pieces added to soil, were compared. Water-extractable (WE) P, phosphatase activity (P-ase), and pH were monitored. In general, the size and distribution of the citrus fruit wastes gave similar trends in WE-P, P-ase, and pH. Lemon induced larger effects on WE-P and pH than did mandarin. CM caused sustained soil alkalization, increased soil WE-P and P-ase. Citrus addition produced a short-lived acidification followed by net alkalization and immediate increases in WE-P and P-ase. The combined amendment with citrus wastes enhanced the positive effect of CM on soil WE-P and alkalization, with only a small effect on P-ase. These findings indicate that citrus wastes would intensify the beneficial effects of CM amendment on soil P availability and additionally the liming effect on acid soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a lack of agronomic research on the production of custard apple seedlings, especially regarding the ideal substrate and nutritional requirement of the plants. In order to evaluate the accumulation of nutrients in shoots and roots, leaf chlorophyll index and absorption efficiency index (AEI) in custard apple seedlings grown in different substrates and under doses of slow-release fertilizer, an experiment was set in randomized blocks in split-plot scheme with four replicates and eleven plants per plot. The custard apple seedling production method was by sowing. Plots were represented by substrates (fresh sugarcane bagasse; enriched sugarcane bagasse; coconut powder, and commercial organic substrate), whereas subplots were represented by Osmocote Plus® fertilizer doses (0; 3; 6; 9; 12 and 15 kg m-3). The final evaluation was performed at 105 days after sowing. The effect of the slow-release fertilizer on the formation of custard apple seedlings was influenced by the substrate. There was greater accumulation of nutrients as the availability of nutrients increases, as well as increase in nutrient AEI. Custard apple seedlings were found to be more efficient to absorb N > Mg > K > Ca > P > Fe > Mn > Zn. As substrate, coconut powder associated with the 9 kg m-3 slow-release fertilizer dose is recommended to produce custard apple seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A microcosm study was conducted at two different temperatures under laboratory conditions to investigate the regulatory capacity and the interactive performance of two soil fauna species (Aporrectodea caliginosa, earthworms, and Proisotoma minuta, collembolans) on the reduction of Fusarium toxins in contaminated maize stubbles. Single and mixed species treatments were exposed to artificially infected maize stubbles highly contaminated with the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) (10,462 µg kg−1) and zearalenone (ZEN) (2,780 µg kg−1) at 17 °C and 25 °C for time periods of 3 and 6 weeks. Immediately after the respective end of incubation, the microcosms were heavily watered to determine the leaching potential of DON and ZEN from contaminated maize stubbles. Maize residues, soil, and eluted water (percolate) samples were analysed for mycotoxin content using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The biomass of introduced earthworms and number of collembolans were monitored to get information about their adaptability to the experimental conditions. While the decline of ZEN was temperature-dependent, but not influenced by faunal activities, a reduction of DON due to faunal impact was observed by trend. In the leaching experiment, 67–82% of the DON content in the residual maize stubbles leached from the plant material by irrigation and was detected in the soil (1.9–3.4 µg kg−1) and in the percolate (12–295 µg L−1). In the case of ZEN, 27–50% of the mycotoxin leached from the residual maize stubbles due to watering but was only occasionally detected in traces in the soil and not found in the percolate. The results clearly reveal a leaching potential of both DON and ZEN, respectively, but a mobilisation with water was only observed for DON. Temperature confirmed to be a key factor, affecting the fate of the mycotoxins in the soil by driving the interaction between different soil fauna members as well as functional and trophic levels within the soil food web. Here, a degraded soil, located in a semi-arid Mediterranean region, was characterized 17 years after organic amendment with sludge or compost (differing in their stabilization degree) for restoration purposes. To do this, (i) soil physicochemical properties and plant cover, (ii) soil organic matter (SOM) content and composition, (iii) soil basal respiration and enzymatic activities, and (iv) abundance, taxonomic composition, and functionality (shotgun metagenomics) of microbial communities were studied. Increased SOM and nutrient contents were found in soil from amended plots with respect to the control, with no differences between amendment types. This is explained by the lasting effects of organic amendments and the higher plant cover. Thermal and pyrolytic analyses showed that the restoration process enriched soil mainly with SOM of intermediate recalcitrance and of high chemical diversity. SOM composition did not differ between amendment types. Increased microbial abundances and activities were found in the amended plots, without differences between compost and sludge. Shotgun metagenomics showed that microbial communities changed in taxonomic and functional terms between amended and unamended plots, but these differences were rather limited. The taxonomic differences between treatments were mainly driven by increasing abundances of Actinobacteria and decreasing abundances of Proteobacteria in soil from amended plots. Soil microbial communities in amended plots showed some functional adaptation to the increased nutrient contents and predominant nutrients forms. This, together with the higher microbial abundances detected, explained the conspicuous soil enzymatic activities reported in amended plots. • A solid fraction of anaerobic digestate provided all essential nutrients to a tomato crop. • The high initial concentration of ammonium decreased rapidly and nitrate concentration increased towards the end of the cultivation. • Inoculation with active nitrification bacteria failed to increase the nitrate concentration or plant nitrogen uptake. • Macro- and micro nutrient relations in the substrate, in fruits and in the green biomass were analyzed in the beginning and in the end of the cultivation. Anaerobic digestate is a valuable resource for horticultural production, as it contains nutrients and fibers that can be used in plant growing medium. However, compared with hydroponic production based on mineral fertilizers, obtaining accurate nutrient supply at each stage of the growth cycle may be challenging. In an experiment using container-grown tomato crops, we evaluated different fertilization regimes with solid anaerobic digestate (SAD). Four different treatments were compared, two involving different proportions (19 % and 37 % by volume) of SADs in the peat-based growing medium, one treatment where growing medium with 37 % SAD was inoculated with active nitrifying bacteria, and one treatment where 15 % (v/v) of the peat in growing medium with 37 % SAD was replaced with sawdust to control nitrogen (N) availability during cultivation. A mineral-fertilized treatment (N-P-K 5–1-5) with approximately similar N amount as in the treatment with 37 % SAD was used as reference. Nutrient availability, nutrient uptake efficiency, crop performance (plant growth, biomass accumulation), and plant stress (chlorophyll fluorescence) were monitored during cultivation. The concentration of ammonium was initially high (190–416 mg/L substrate) in the growing media fertilized with anaerobic digestate, while the concentration of nitrate was low. Readily available ammonium concentration decreased rapidly during cultivation, to around 50 % after 10 days and to almost 100 % by the end of the cultivation. Available nitrate concentration was initially low (0–8 mg/L in the different treatments) and decreased to zero within a week, but increased slightly from day 40 of cultivation. Nutrient use efficiency was generally higher (15–50 % for different nutrients) in the treatment with 19 % digestate. Inclusion of sawdust in the growing medium decreased nutrient use efficiency by 30–50 %. Compared with the mineral-fertilizer reference, biomass production was lower in all treatments fertilized with digestate, with 37 % and 19 % SAD resulting in 62 % and 47 % of total biomass obtained in the reference, and similar reductions in yield of harvestable fruits. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements indicated elevated plant stress in the treatments fertilized with SAD. Addition of sawdust or nitrifying bacteria did not help to control nitrogen availability during cultivation. Purpose: Due to environmental concerns, efforts are made to replace the use of peat in horticultural growth media by organic wastes. Four growth media were prepared with the purpose of achieving adequate physical and chemical properties for plant production. Materials and methods: Growth media prepared from mixtures of coir (C) and paper sludge (P), respectively, with two biogas digestates from food waste (D1 and D2), were tested. These mixtures, 20% D1 or D2 + 80% C or P (v/v), were evaluated as growth media for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Results and conclusion: The growth media were all physically stable during the growing period, provided all the macronutrients and most of the micronutrients necessary for plant growth, adequate pH conditions, as well as an adequate electrical conductivity. The mixture of D2 and P produced the highest biomass compared to a mineral fertilised peat (control), with a biomass production of 76% of the control for lettuce and 54% for tomato. Causes for the biomass reduction relative to the control may be related to ammonium toxicity effects, and/or limited plant-available water. The digestates, particularly D1, seemed also to have a phytotoxic effect on the germination.

During the past 30 years, molecular analyses have provided an important corpus of evidence for the exploitation of Apis mellifera products, honey and beeswax, since the Neolithic. In this paper, we report the earliest, to our knowledge, evidence of bee product exploitation in Cyprus dated to the Ceramic Neolithic (5th millennium BC) and the Chalcolithic periods (4th–mid 3rd millennia BC). Systematic sampling and analysis of organic remains absorbed in the walls of ceramic containers from the Ceramic Neolithic sites of Sotira Teppes and Kantou Kouphovounos and also the Middle Chalcolithic site of Erimi Pamboula, located to the central and southern part of Cyprus, were undertaken. We conducted lipid residue analysis in seventy-nine sherd samples, using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry that provided direct chemical evidence for the presence of beeswax residues in twelve vessels from Erimi Pamboula and one vessel from Sotira Teppes. These findings bring new light on the use of beeswax in Cyprus, pushing back the date for the exploitation of Apis mellifera on the island to the second half of the 5th millennium BC. The sampled vessels do not imply a pattern in pottery types where beeswax was preserved, although its extensive presence at Erimi Pamboula ceramics suggests the diachronic use of bee products in the area. The study of micromorphology helps understanding the function of water and the physiological response of plant cultures in a substrate. This research evaluated the effect of micromorphology of mixtures of organic materials on water content and root growth of Chrysanthemum. The hypothesis was that a description of the micromorphology of proposed new substrates would help inferring water storage and movement, and consequently, root growth. Organic materials used were pine sawdust (AP), pine shavings (VP), henequen bagasse (BH), coconut coir dust (PC) and a control (peat:Agrolita™) substrate. Seven mixtures were evaluated, planting cuttings rooted in 1250 mL containers. In the mixtures, water potential (y), root volume (VR) and the dry weight of roots was determined (PSR); in the leaves, relative water content (CRA) and water use efficiency (UEA). The micromorphology and porosity were characterized with the description of thin sections. The results indicated that the shape and distribution of particle sizes, degree of decomposition of organic matter, type and size of pores had an influence on the water retention and movement in a substrate. The mixture of henequen bagasse and sawdust, in a ratio of 20:80 formed compound packing pores of 50 to 500 mm size, and surpassed the control mixture in water use efficiency, with no significant differences in water potential, relative water content or dry weight of roots. The combination of coconut coir dust and pine sawdust formed compound packing pores and micropores <50 mm that hindered water movement and affected root growth. In the 20PC:80VP mixture, 80% of the particles were >200 mm, with simple packing pores 80% of them with sizes between 200 and 500 mm that allow water percolation and a reduction in the water potential (y). Climate deterioration and environmental pollution has been widely studied by a wide scientific community. The effects of the ecosystem deterioration impacts directly to human activities. In this scenario, the building industry has increased the pressure on proposing new materials to replace the cementicious component and natural resources (water, sand, gravel, and limestone) on mortar and concrete to reverse this trend. To this end, organic residues can offer opportunities as an available alternative for construction applications. Therefore, this paper aims to broaden the scope of research in this field by investigating the potential use of organic residues as cementicious building material based on bibliometric-statistical analysis using scientific information. A preliminary bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer was carried out to define the keywords co-ocurrence from Scopus database. Type of organic material, constructive use, and its properties (physicochemical, mechanical, and thermal) were extracted from scientific publications. Then, a systematic analysis criteria was defined to limit the scope of the study. Finally, statistical variance analysis and multiple correlation for identifying constructive application were applied. From the co-ocurrence analysis of keywords, we determined that 54% of the selected scientific publications were closely related to the scope of this study. State-of-the-art study established that related researches grew exponentially at a rate of about 30%/year. Moreover, scientific publications reported the use of a wide variety of organic residues, such as wheat, paper, hemp, rice, wood, molluscs, olive, coconut, among others. Mainly, agricultural residues (82%) with building applications related to structural concrete, mortar, bricks, and blocks, had been evaluated. Physicochemical properties from organic residues (extractives content, lignin content, and density) were correlated to mechanical (compressive, flexural and tensile strength) and thermal properties (thermal conductivity). The identification of the physicochemical properties of the organic residues allow us to predict the mechanical and thermal behavior of the material with residues. In summary, agricultural residues are the most promising organic building material due to their abundance and lignin content, exhibiting better mechanic and thermal properties than any other organic residues.

Food is often one of the most distinctive expressions of social, religious, cultural or ethnic groups. However, the archaeological identification of specific religious dietary practices, including the Jewish tradition of keeping kosher, associated with ritual food practices and taboos, is very rare. This is arguably one of the oldest known diets across the world and, for an observant Jew, maintaining dietary laws (known as Kashruth) is a fundamental part of everyday life. Recent excavations in the early medieval Oxford Jewish quarter yielded a remarkable assemblage of animal bones, marked by a complete absence of pig specimens and a dominance of kosher (permitted) birds, domestic fowl and goose. To our knowledge, this is the first identification of a Jewish dietary signature in British zooarchaeology, which contrasted markedly with the previous Saxon phase where pig bones were present in quantity and bird bones were barely seen. Lipid residue analysis of pottery from St Aldates showed that vessels from the possible Jewish houses were solely used to process ruminant carcass products, with an avoidance of pig product processing, correlating well with the faunal data. In contrast, lipid analysis of pottery from comparative assemblages from the previous Saxon phase at the site and a contemporaneous site in the city, The Queen’s College, shows that the majority of these vessels appear to have been used to process mixtures of both ruminant and non-ruminant (pig) products. Here, the combination of organic residue analysis, site excavation and animal and fish bone evidence was consistent with the presence of Jewish houses in eleventh- and twelfth-century St Aldates, Oxford, hitherto only suspected through documentary information. This is the first identification of specific religious dietary practices using lipid residue analysis, verifying that, at least 800 years ago, medieval Jewish Oxford communities practised dietary laws known as Kashruth. In this study, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach, integrating agronomic field experiments with soil chemistry, molecular biology techniques, and statistics to investigate the impact of organic residue amendments, such as vinasse (a by-product of sugarcane ethanol production), on soil microbiome and greenhouse gas (GHG) production. The research investigates the effects of distinct disturbances, including organic residue application alone or combined with inorganic N fertilizer on the environment. The methods assess soil microbiome dynamics (composition and function), GHG emissions, and plant productivity. Detailed steps for field experimental setup, soil sampling, soil chemical analyses, determination of bacterial and fungal community diversity, quantification of genes related to nitrification and denitrification pathways, measurement and analysis of gas fluxes (N 2 O, CH 4 , and CO 2 ), and determination of plant productivity are provided. The outcomes of the methods are detailed in our publications (Lourenço et al., 2018a; Lourenço et al., 2018b; Lourenço et al., 2019; Lourenço et al., 2020). Additionally, the statistical methods and scripts used for analyzing large datasets are outlined. The overexploitation of fossil fuels as main energy source to support the global economy is identified as the most responsible of the current critical situation from an environmental viewpoint. The need to replace fossil fuels has posed the attention on alternative energy sources such as biofuels, in both developed and developing countries. Africa, for example, has enormous natural resources in the form of biomass from agriculture and other related processes (i.e., food residues). An action that can help fight climate change is the implementation of biofuel refineries to maximize the value of biomass by converting it into a range of products, like energy vectors, biomaterials, feed and fertilizers. By using emergy evaluation and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) this study focused on the potential development of sustainable biotechnological processes fed by biowaste and bioresidues in two African countries (Egypt and Ghana). We assessed the sustainability level of two biofuel productions based on starch and lignocellulosic feedstocks (i.e., cassava peel and corn stover, respectively). A first understanding of the sustainability of the case studies was obtained and the results showed that the biorefinery based on cassava peel was more sustainable from both the user and donor perspectives. Indeed, the LCA results showed that impact categories Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Acidification Potential (AP) had lower values for cassava compared to corn stover biorefinery and emergy outcomes highlighted that the starch-rich feedstock had lower Unit Emergy Value (UEV) and higher renewability percentage (94%). These results suggest that biorefineries are an option for world bioeconomy strategy as they enable optimization of agricultural and food residues and their environmental performance in producing a renewable substitute for fossil fuels and other non-renewable materials is promising.

The need for interdisciplinary studies is the basis of ambitious research (ARCHEM Project) that is carried out in the argaric settlement of Peñalosa (Baños de la Encina, Jaén), combining organic residues analysis and techno-typological studies of pottery found in funerary contexts. Manufacture and use of pottery could inform us about customs and traditions that remain hidden in time and in the archaeological record. Knowing the implications and decisions of potters as well as the functionality of those vessels deposited inside the graves can approach the idiosyncrasy of a society in the Bronze Age in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The methodology used to identify patterns of functionality is highlighted by the combination of cutting-edge analysis techniques in both fields such as the application of different chromatographic techniques (GC-MS, UPLC-HRMS and GC-C-IRMS) that allow to identify the organic compounds in the ceramics and the application of analytical techniques from Earth Sciences (Stereomicroscopic, X-Ray Diffraction and Petrography), which allow us to characterize ceramic pastes and knowing the catchment of raw materials. This study highlights the Peñalosa site as a melting pot of new research and it brings us closer with the use of a complex methodology combined to the societies 4000 years ago.

Dark septate endophytes (DSE) is a diverse group of Ascomycetes fungi involved in a mutualistic symbiosis with plant roots, however, their ecological roles need further clarification. This study aimed to investigate how DSE (Acrocalymma vagum and Paraboeremia putaminum) affect liquorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) growth under additional sterilized fermented and unfermented organic residues. Two DSE strains could establish a positive symbiosis with the host plants depending on DSE species and residue availability. Specifically, A. vagum inoculation mainly promoted the development of lateral roots, whereas P. putaminum inoculation mainly improved the taproot development. Mantel test and structural equation model (SEM) analysis demonstrated that DSE associated with residues significantly positively influenced the plant biomass, taproot length, total root length, root diameter, glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin content. The greatest benefits of DSE inoculation occurred in fermented residue treatment. Variation in root growth can be attributed to the effects of DSE inoculation. As A. vagum exhibited positive effects on the plant biomass, root growth, and active ingredient content in liquorice plants under organic residues treatment, it was considered to be the best combination of A. vagum and fermented residues for the liquorice cultivation. These results contribute to the understanding of the ecological function of DSE fungi in nutrient deficiency lands.

The use of pesticides presents a risk to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. For this reason, the development of strategies to prevent and restore pollution is of the greatest interest, including the adsorption to organic matter. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sorption/desorption and kinetics of atrazine, chlorfenvinphos, endosulfan sulfate, and trifluralin onto several raw organic wastes by batch experiments. Three kinetic models were used to fit the obtained sorption kinetics data and two to fit the obtained adsorption isotherm data; both the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models described the sorption isotherms well. The desorption study revealed hysteresis in all cases, showing strong, and not completely reversible, adsorption in most cases, with the exception of atrazine-sawdust and chlorfenvinphos-sawdust and chicken manure combinations, for which responses were weak and irreversible. The best kinetic, adsorption and desorption constants were achieved for the hydrophobic pesticides. With respect to sorption-desorption rates, orujillo was found to be the best adsorbent for atrazine, while composted urban solid waste was more suitable for trifluralin and endosulfan sulfate. Sorption constants and simple correlations indicated that, not only the organic matter content, but also the nature of the organic matter itself, and the pesticide and adsorbent properties, determine pesticide sorption-desorption. The use of wastes as efficient and cheap adsorbents for reducing the risk of pesticide pollution is proposed.

The start-up conditions of mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of restaurant food waste and vinasse, a waste from sugarcane industry, was investigated for efficient biogas production. A pilot plant, containing two reactors, was designed and used sequentially and semi-continuously for biogas production. All effective operational parameters were controlled in both reactors over the course of the study. The results indicated that the organic matters were quickly decreased during the start-up phase in the first reactor, resulting in 52% and 64% reduction in total solids and total volatile solids, respectively, while the corresponding reductions in the methanogenic reactor were 39.7% and 51.4%. The production of hydrogen was observed during the first 20 d of digestion, where the maximum concentration of 76.5% was detected after 8 d when the pH stood at 5.96. After 21 d of digestion, hydrogen concentration was decreased to less than 4.5%, while methane content was increased leading to an accumulated biogas yield of over 300 mL per g of total volatile solids. The high concentration of hydrogen in biogas was possibly due to the improvement in the growth of acidogenic bacteria in response to maintaining pH at their optimum value, leading to a more efficient organic residues hydrolysis.

Soil phosphmonoesterases play an important role in controlling phosphorus cycling for crops, especially in P- deficient soils. Phosphomonoesterases markedly affected by addition of organic residues depending on source, rate, and maturity and stability of these residues. An incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate alkaline phosphatase activity and kinetics of two soils (silty clay and loamy sand) after addition of different organic sources (cow residue, alfalfa leaves, wheat straw and poultry residue) at rate of 2 %. The experiment was set out in randomized complete design with three replicates. Amended and control soils were incubated at 30ºc for 30 days. Results showed that alkaline phosphatase activity of amended soils was significantly higher than that of control soil, except soil amended with wheat straw. Enzyme activity was differed according to the type of organic residue with superiority of poultry residue. Alkaline phosphatase activity of silty clay soil was significantly higher than that of loamy sand soil. Data also revealed that Vmax and Km values of amended soils were higher than these of unamended soil. Higher Vmax and Km value were associated with using of poultry residue. Estimated Vmax and Km values varied with the type of transformation used to linearize Mechaelis--Menten equation which followed the order: Hanes -- Wolf > Eadie -- Hofstee > Line Weaver -- Burk. Enhanced subsurface reductive potentials and anaerobic conditions induced by organic residues at oilfield sites may affect arsenic (As) levels in groundwater (GW) and GW-irrigated crops. To substantiate this effect, a Fe/Mn-As binary mineral oxide (FMBO-As) was synthesized by co-precipitation and a series of soil columns packed with varying FMBO-As levels were eluted with simulated oily wastewater to evaluate total As levels and As speciation. According to results from FTIR, XPS, SEM, and EDS analyses, As in synthesized FMBO-As particles exist in certain Fe-O-As bonding states. Both total As and arsenite (As(III)) fraction in soil-column leached solutions increased significantly with increasing FMBO-As packed in soil columns when leached by the simulated oily sewage water. Meanwhile, the total As and As(III) levels in leachate were well correlated with the leaching time, the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and the abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria in simulated oily wastewater. Especially when the COD value was 51040 mg/L, the increase percentage of total As in the leachate has reached to 64.2%-186.6% at a leaching time of 2 to 18 days. These findings support the view that wastewaters from petroleum exploiting sites enhance the release of soil-and/or mineral-bound As and the distribution of As(III) versus As(Ⅴ) in nearby GW to ultimately impact the local ecological quality and human health. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of alternative organic materials for the production of lettuce seedlings. The treatments were: commercial substrate "Bioplant" (T1) substrate prepared by a local farmer (T2), earthworm humus (T3), humus + sand (T4, T5 and T6 in the ratio of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4, respectively), soybean wastes + sand (T7, T8 and T9 in the ratio 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4, respectively), humus + residue of sugarcane (T10, T11 and T12 in the ratio 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4, respectively), soybean residue + residue of sugarcane (T13, T14 and T15 in the ratio 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, respectively). The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with four repetitions in 200 cell trays. The emergency percentage, emergence speed index, number of leaves and dry mass of shoots were evaluated. It was found that the treatments T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T10, T11, and T12 provided high percentage of emergency and emergency speed index similar as commercial substrate (T1). This paper deals with an attempt to understand the meaning of a unique, small and isolated La Tène mountain site, discovered by chance in the forested part of the Šumava National Park, Šumava Mts., Czech Republic, using available archaeological and environmental methods. The activities of a person/small group of people took place repeatedly in an area ca. 20 × 20 m on a small platform above a distinct river meander between ca. 300 and 90 BC. Radiocarbon dating of lipids from the pottery fragment supports its typological dating, and it is in accordance with 14C data from plant macro-remains. Some 500 pottery fragments, charcoal, plant macro-remains, soil chemistry and vegetation changes observable in an adjacent pollen profile provide evidence of unspecifiable human activity which caused a small-scale clearance of the closed canopy forest. The 'pottery' phase of the site was preceded by around 100 years of activity which left only traces of fire and the preparation of cereals and pulses for cooking. Lipid residue analysis of pottery vessels revealed the processing of animal carcass products, mostly ruminants. The detection of heating biomarkers confirmed that some of the original pots were heated at temperatures above 300 °C. Considering the nature of the site, the cooked or roasted meat probably reached the site already potted. The idea of food being brought in was supported by the finding of a vessel containing plant lipids derived from either olive or hazelnut oil. The analysis of all known data shows that this secluded site was not an ordinary settlement, or a hunting or prospector's camp, but must have had some other meaning, such as a road-worker camp on a long distance trade route, a guardhouse, or perhaps a hermitage. Anaerobic digestion has been widely applied for waste treatment, renewable energy generation and biofertilizer production. The biogas potential in Brazil is sizable, but the state of Rio de Janeiro is largely dependent on fossil fuels, and there is a lack of biogas potential assessments in the state. Thus, this study evaluated biomethane, electricity and biofertilizer potentials in the region. Three different scenarios of biomass supply were considered for four major biowaste streams: sewage sludge; cattle manure; sugarcane processing waste; and food waste. Biomethane generation from the assessed sources could reach 0.6–1.3 billion Nm3 year−1, corresponding to 1,768–3,961 GWh year−1 of electricity and 1.6–3.3 million Mg year−1 of biofertilizer. Cattle manure was responsible for 73–84% of the projected biomethane production, presenting an opportunity to reduce the significant emissions from livestock farming. The estimated biofertilizer production could meet the demands of the state, and the produced electricity could offset up to 10% of the demand. The gas grid could facilitate the distribution of upgraded biomethane, and 10–22% of the natural gas demand could be met. The findings of this work highlight the high potential for biogas generation in Rio de Janeiro, which is up to seven times larger than the current production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Meeting global water quality standards is a real challenge to ensure that food crops and livestock are fit for consumption, as well as for human health in general. A major hurdle affecting the detection of pollutants in water reservoirs is the lapse of time between the sampling moment and the availability of the laboratory-based results. Here, we report the preparation, characterization, and performance assessment of an innovative sensor for the rapid detection of organic residue levels and pH in water samples. The sensor is based on carbonaceous nanomaterials (CNMs) coated with an intrinsically conductive polymer, polyaniline (PANI). Inverse emulsion polymerizations of aniline in the presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or graphene were prepared and confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. Aminophenol and phenol were used as proxies for organic residue detection. The PANI/CNM nanocomposites were used to fabricate thin-film sensors. Of all the CNMs, the smallest limit of detection (LOD) was achieved for multi-walled CNT (MWCNT) with a LOD of 9.6 ppb for aminophenol and a very high linearity of 0.997, with an average sensitivity of 2.3 kΩ/pH at an acid pH. This high sensor performance can be attributed to the high homogeneity of the PANI coating on the MWCNT surface.

With the increase of agricultural production, residues of crop are the main source of organic matter in the soil and they are alternatives to inorganic fertilizers. For this purpose, effects of organic residues (cotton stalk, maize stalk, almond bark) commonly grown in Turkey were investigated for some soil microbial activity in clay soil. In this study, incubation experiment was set up. Five doses (0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8%) of organic residues (maize stalks, cotton stalks or almond bark) were applied to soil. Soil microbiological properties of soil samples such as CO2 respiration, dehydrogenase and urease activity were determined. According to the results obtained, maize stalk, cotton stalks and almond bark applications increased some soil microbiological activities, such as CO2 respiration, dehydrogenase and urease activities according to control soil. Maize stalk in comparison to other residues affects better on the biological properties of the soil. It is determined that enhancing effects of the added organic residues (maize stalk, cotton stalk, almond bark) into the soil were changed according to the type of organic residues, dosage and application terms.

This paper presents new results of an interdisciplinary investigation of the diet and subsistence strategies of populations living in the North-Pontic region during the Eneolithic and the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3800 BC to the 2500 BC). New organic residue analyses of >200 sherds from five Eneolithic sites and two Early Bronze Age settlements are presented. The molecular and stable isotope results are discussed in relation to zooarchaeological evidence. Overall, the findings suggest that each community relied on either a hunting- or a husbandry-based subsistence strategy dependent upon the ecosystem in which they settled; horses and wild animals dominated subsistence in the forest-steppe communities in contrast to ruminant husbandry in the steppe.

Dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungi is a diverse group of Ascomycetes fungi that colonize the plants roots, and may facilitate plant growth and fitness, however, their ecological roles need further clarification. This study aimed to evaluate the growth promoting effects of DSE fungi in a medicinal plant, liquorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), under additional organic residues. First, we isolated, identified and characterized, two DSE fungal species (Acrocalymma vagum and Paraboeremia putaminum) harboring inside the roots of liquorice growing in arid areas of China. Second, we examined the performance and rhizosphere soil parameters of liquorice plants inoculated with these fungi under additional sterilized organic residues and unsterilized organic residue (containing Trichoderma viride population) in a growth chamber. The results showed that two DSE strains could effectively colonize plant roots and formed a strain-dependent symbiosis with liquorice. DSE inoculation alone increased the plant biomass, and glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin content. It also improved the root system and N and P absorption by plants, consequently depleting these macronutrients in the soil. Residues alone increased soil organic matter, available phosphorus (P), and available nitrogen (N) content, and plant biomass, N, P, glycyrrhizic acid, and glycyrrhizin content. Mantel test and structural equation model (SEM) analysis demonstrated that DSE associated with residues significantly positively influenced soil organic matter, available P and available N, and plant biomass, glycyrrhizin, N, P, and root surface area. Variation in plant growth and glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin accumulation can be attributed to the effects of DSE inoculation. DSE associated with residues exhibited a general synergistic effect on the growth and accumulation of glycyrrhizic acid and glycyrrhizin of liquorice. We demonstrate for the first time, two DSE fungi in the liquorice roots that have potential use as promoter for the cultivation of medicinal plant.

Nitrogen (N) deficiency is a very common problem of alkaline soils. Incorporation of organic residues with urea could be promising practice for improving soil properties and crop yield. This study was aimed, to evaluate the responses of two maize cultivar (Azam and Jalal) to organic wastes and Urea (sole organic residues i.e. seed cake (SC), poultry manure (PM), press mud (PrM) and mineral nitrogen (urea) and their combinations with urea (25%, 50% or 75%) applied at 150 kg N ha−1 under field conditions. Significant differences were recorded for leaf area index, plant height, number of grains ear−1, 1000 grain weight, biological and grain yield to N sources. Maize cultivar Jalal performed significantly better than Azam for all tested traits. The performance of both cultivars was significantly better when N was applied as either SC/PM with urea at 25:75, SC and PM with urea at 25:25:50, 100% sole urea, SC/PrM with urea at 50:50, or all organic N sources (25%) with urea (75%). Integration of organic wastes with urea gave the higher maize yield however, it was similar to the yield obtained from sole urea but due to allied environmental and health hazards, the sole use of urea could not be encouraged. Purpose: Due to environmental concerns, efforts are made to replace the use of peat in horticultural growth media by organic wastes. Four growth media were prepared with the purpose of achieving adequate physical and chemical properties for plant production. Materials and methods: Growth media prepared from mixtures of coir (C) and paper sludge (P), respectively, with two biogas digestates from food waste (D1 and D2), were tested. These mixtures, 20% D1 or D2 + 80% C or P (v/v), were evaluated as growth media for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Results and conclusion: The growth media were all physically stable during the growing period, provided all the macronutrients and most of the micronutrients necessary for plant growth, adequate pH conditions, as well as an adequate electrical conductivity. The mixture of D2 and P produced the highest biomass compared to a mineral fertilised peat (control), with a biomass production of 76% of the control for lettuce and 54% for tomato. Causes for the biomass reduction relative to the control may be related to ammonium toxicity effects, and/or limited plant-available water. Abstract Application of biochars produced by pyrolyzing organic residues to cropland has been proposed to be an effective approach to better use of organic residues, decrease soil greenhouse gas emission and increase soil fertility. However, the effect of biochar application on processes occurring in the bulk soil vs that in the rhizosphere is poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of manure pellet and woodchip biochars, as compared to that of unpyrolyzed (raw) manure pellet and woodchip, on plant grain yield, and soil respiration in the bulk and rhizosphere soils in a greenhouse experiment using the rhizobox technique. The raw manure pellet and woodchip and their biochars were applied to the soil at the rate of 57 t ha−1 and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. GP168) was grown in the rhizosphere compartment of the rhizobox. Soil amendment with raw manure pellet and its biochar significantly increased plant grain yield by 36.3 and 16.1%, as compared to the control (without amendment), while raw woodchip and its biochar applications significantly decreased plant grain yield. Manure pellet and woodchip biochars significantly reduced soil respiration from the rhizosphere by 24.6 and 29.7%, respectively, relative to the control, but not that from the bulk soil (P > 0.05). Relativized cumulative CO 2 emission was significantly reduced by both manure pellet and woodchip biochars from rhizosphere and bulk soils. Dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen were increased (P < 0.01) in all soil amendment treatments in both bulk and rhizosphere soils, but microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen in the rhizosphere soil were reduced by manure pellet biochar application. We conclude that biochars produced from organic residues have differential impacts on processes in bulk and rhizosphere soils, and thus measurements based on bulk soil alone may result in erroneous conclusions about the effect of biochars on soil CO 2 emission. Highlights • Seashell powder was utilized for phosphate recovery from fermentation broth. • The impact of medium constituents on phosphate removal was investigated. • The methods worked for low phosphate concentrations of about 50 mg L−1. • Alcohols did not negatively affect phosphate removal, but organic acids did. Abstract This communication elaborates on the use of seashell powder (SP) for the removal of phosphate from lactic acid-containing fermentation broth. Despite extensive past research regarding the application of SP for phosphate removal from wastewater, no information is available for solutions containing various organic compounds. In order to fill this knowledge gap, tests were performed with pure phosphate solution (PPS) and PPS containing 0.83 M of three alcohols, ethanol, propanol or 1,2-propanediol, or 0.83 M of three organic acids, acetic, propionic or lactic acid. Furthermore, a real fermentation broth (RFB) obtained from the fermentative production of lactic acid from food waste was tested. Using 4.8 g SP, more than 95% of phosphate, present at an initial concentration of 50 mg L−1, could be removed from PPS and PPS containing alcohols after 120 min. The presence of organic acids reduced the removal capacity of SP and only 55%–73% of the phosphate initially present was removed. The presence of lactic acid also substantially affected the removal of phosphate from RFB when 132 mg L−1 phosphate was initially present: after 120 min, only 28.6 mg L−1 of phosphate had been removed. The results indicate the use of SP for phosphate removal from fermentation broth, contributing to multi-component utilization of fermentation broth. The spread of early farming across Europe from its origins in Southwest Asia was a culturally transformative process which took place over millennia. Within regions, the pace of the transition was probably related to the particular climatic and environmental conditions encountered, as well as the nature of localized hunter-gatherer and farmer interactions. The establishment of farming in the interior of the Balkans represents the first movement of Southwest Asian livestock beyond their natural climatic range, and widespread evidence now exists for early pottery being used extensively for dairying. However, pottery lipid residues from sites in the Iron Gates region of the Danube in the northern Balkans show that here, Neolithic pottery was being used predominantly for processing aquatic resources. This stands out not only within the surrounding region but also contrasts markedly with Neolithic pottery use across wider Europe. These findings provide evidence for the strategic diversity within the wider cultural and economic practices during the Neolithic, with this exceptional environmental and cultural setting offering alternative opportunities despite the dominance of farming in the wider region. The detection of trace levels of organic residue in water samples is a key health issue. This manuscript describes the fabrication of integrated nano-sensors composed of electrospun microfibers consisting of a nanocomposite of carbonaceous materials (CNMs) containing polyaniline (PANI) and polycaprolactone (PCL) for phenolic detection in aqueous solutions. The morphology of the resulting microfiber composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. It revealed elongated fibers with a highly interconnected web-like pattern in the presence of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Shorter microfibers were observed in the composite filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), whereas large agglomerates were formed upon the incorporation of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and graphene 300 (G300). Comparative analysis showed that the PANI/CNM sensors exhibited the best electrochemical properties, in particular in the presence of rGO and MWCNTs, where greater electrical conductivity was achieved, i.e. , 4.33 × 10−3 and 7.22 × 10−4 S/cm, respectively, as compared to the PANI-PCL sensor (3.79 × 10−4 S/cm). All the PANI/CNM sensors exhibited high sensitivity. Notably, PANI/rGO was found to have a detection limit of 8.34 × 10−3 µM for aminophenol. All the sensors exhibited good selectivity in the presence of interference to detecting phenolic compounds in aqueous solutions, thus confirming their value for industrial applications. This study was carried out to determine the effects of rice husk compost (RC), town waste compost (TW) and tobacco waste (TB) on bicarbonate extractable phosphate content (P) in soils having different pH levels under greenhouse conditions. Soil samples used in this study were taken from surfaces (0-20 cm) of agricultural fields around Samsun, Northern Anatolia. The experiment was conducted according to split plot design with four doses of organic matterials (0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5, %). After a month of mixing organic matterials into soils, lettuce were grown in the medias. According to the results, RC, TW and TB applications into acidic (Tepecik), neutral (Kampüs) and alkaline (Çetinkaya) soils increased extractable P content. It was observed that effectiveness of organic matterials changed depend on soil reaction, type and dose of organic matterials. All organic wastes were more effective on increment of bicarbonate extractable phosphate content in neutral soil pH when compared the other soil pH levels.
