Comparative constructions of inequality display a recurrent pattern throughout all Germanic languages, which is partially inherited from the Indo-European mother tongue. This common semasiological format consists in a copulative construction in which the adjective expressing the quality carries a comparative suffix and is accompanied by a particle introducing the standard. For the latter, a morpheme coming from various onomasiological domains is generally recruited. After a general overview of the construction within the Germanic family, the paper will focus on its consistency in the German linguistic islands of Northern Italy, where a remarkable variety is found, which is only partially due to the long-standing contact with Romance languages. Besides an overview of the Bavarian islands of the North-East, particular attention is devoted to the Walser German islands of the North-West, where a number of peculiar patterns are found, which partially reflect structural possibilities attested in earlier stages of the German-speaking territory, but also display unique developments such as for instance the comparative particle ŝchu ‘so’ found in Rimella.

Aspect and Aktionsart are both categories that codify information on the internal temporal structure of states of affairs. In traditional studies on aspectuality, a very strict distinction between them is usually made. Aspect is an obligatory grammatical (morphosyntactic) verbal category, which must therefore be expressed in all languages whose verbal systems allow it. Aktionsart is a lexical verbal category and is not subject to such restraints in individual languages. This “bidimensional” perspective – widespread in Linguistics and even more so in Romance Linguistics (see, among many others, Bertinetto 1986; Smith 1991; Squartini 1998) – contrasts with a less common “unidimensional” approach (De Miguel 1999; Verkuyl 1972, 1993). The latter advocates the semantic identity of what, in terms of the linguistic analysis of individual languages, is considered either grammatical or lexical aspect.In this paper, an analysis of aspectuality as a semantic-functional category comprising both aspect and Aktionsart will be introduced by means of a new unidimensional model, which has an onomasiological background and is based on frame semantics (see Dessì Schmid 2014, 2019). In accordance with many studies on cognitive semantics, aspectuality is defined as the structuring of states of affairs through delimitation or bounding (see, e.g., Smith 1997; Bickel 1997; Langacker 1987, 2006; Talmy 1996, 2000); this delimitation principle is further developed and applied in a highly extended and structured way.The paper will focus on French examples but will also consider some data from other Romance languages, although it is applicable to any individual language.

Relationships with others raise issues of identity and characterize individuals in their behavior with others. These identity issues, which are specific to each society, are sources of the discourse of otherness. In the French-speaking space which, by its essence and in the light of historical facts, reflects otherness, this discourse is reflected in the terms and lexies of topolectal varieties of French. Based on an onomasiological approach, going from definition to words to discover how otherness is presented, this research aims to identify and present the lexical aspect of the discourse of others in a lexicographical corpus from all over the French-speaking world. In other words, this article studies the topolectal speaking of French to find terms used to evoke otherness. Terms such as "French", "European", "foreign", "white" were the object of a first observation given that they constitute the reverses of a discourse of domination in the dichotomy colonizer-colonized against with "aboriginal" "negro" and "black". Through illustrated examples, we demonstrate that different aspects such as physical, geographic, and identity traits are vehicles of this discourse which, axiologically, mainly present the pejorative values attributed to the other. Also, it would seem that colonial memory helps to nourish this vision of the other who stands out from the speakers, whose speech is studied, by his foreign origin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces the most important theoretical and methodological works (monographs, studies, and textbooks) that have set the course for word-formation research, especially regarding its methodology, in Slovakia since the latter half of the 20th century, starting with a pioneering monograph by Ján Horecký entitled Slovotvorná sústava slovenčiny [Slovak Word-Formation System] (1959), followed by the works of other distinguished scholars (J. Furdík, K. Buzássyová, M. Sokolová, Ľ. Liptáková, M. Nábělková, etc.). Special attention is also paid to the works dealing with the development of word-formation, derivational semantics and onomasiology, word-formation research in relation to other branches of language and linguistics (lexicology and lexicography, morphemics, morphonology, morphology, syntax, theory of the text), as well as to the research focused on compounding.

We present in this paper a novel ontological theory of events whose central tenet is the Aristotelian distinction between the object that changes and the actual subject of change, which is what we call an individual quality. While in the Kimian tradition events are individuated by a triple ⟨ o , P , t ⟩ , where o is an object, P a property, and t an interval of time, for us the simplest events are qualitative changes, individuated by a triple ⟨ o , q , t ⟩ , where q is an individual quality inhering in o or in one of its parts. Detaching the individuation of events from the property they exemplify results in a fine-grained theory that keeps metaphysics and semantics clearly separate, and lies between the multiplicative and the unitarian approaches. We discuss then the way language refers to events, observing that, in most cases, event descriptions refer to complex, cognitively relevant clusters of co-occurring qualitative changes, which exhibit a synchronic structure depending on the way they are described. Contra Bennett, who famously argued that the semantics of event names ultimately depends on "local context and unprincipled intuitions", we show how the lexicon provides systematic principles for individuating such clusters and classifying them into kinds. The aim of this article is both a pronouncement of doom and an offer of hope for the Western business school. Both come from the recognition that business schools are haunted and that the haunting spectre is none other than the capitalist ideology. We ground our thinking in the established rich 'ghostly' academic literature where the metaphor of the ghost is used to reveal the powerful agency of the unspoken-of and the unseen. Using three fictional ghostly tales as interpretive lenses, we make three arguments. First, we argue that capitalism is a ghost in the walls of the business school. Second, we suggest that capitalism's ghostly nature prevents the business school from offering a curriculum that serves more than the growth of financial capital. Third, we propose that naming of capitalism is integral to the exorcism of its ghost and the creation of curriculum that engages with the social and environmental challenges of our times. Contributing to the debate between referentialist and predicativist accounts of the semantics of proper names, this paper partly endorses a recent trend to reject unitary accounts of their semantics. It does so by restoring a Fregean version of the variety of use account. It criticizes alternative variety of use accounts for not clearly distinguishing pragmatic, syntactic, and semantic issues and argues that, once these are distinguished, the necessity of accepting that names have a variety of uses, and are sometimes logical singular terms and at others logical predicates shows that Frege's claim, that we should recognize that names have both reference and sense, is vindicated. The paper aims to offer a description of major onomasiological theories of word-formation. It mainly focuses on the purely synchronic approaches of Dokulil (1962) and Štekauer (1998). A comparative analysis shows that although these approaches are perceived as part of the same onomasiological tradition, they differ in a number of major aspects and should thus be seen as fully autonomous theories. In order to provide a full account of the major onomasiological approaches to word-formation, the paper also describes the most important aspects of those that are on the borderline between word-formation, diachronic onomasiology, and lexicology, those by Blank (1997) and Koch (2001). In the conclusion of the paper, we suggest possible directions which further research in onomasiology may take.

Terminology as a linguistic discipline covers several functions, from the enumeration of the lexemes specific to a field of knowledge through the models and practices of describing terms to the study of concepts and linguistics signs which designate them in specialized languages. Regardless of the point of view adopted, it seems that in any terminological work one should take into consideration the linguistic and extralinguistic dimension of specialized lexical units. This latter aspect stems, among other things, from the specificity of the appropriate area of knowledge and may vary depending on the cultural perception of the world thus expressed by linguistic signs. Recently we have witnessed a considerable scholarly interest in comparative terminological research based on the French and Polish legal systems. For the purpose of this article, we have selected the terminological expression of the concept of 'filiation', indicating the relationships between parents and their children in the two legal systems mentioned above. However, analyses show that already the French legal term filiation (child-parent relationship) does not have its exact equivalent in Polish, because the Polish legal terminology focuses mainly on the reverse relationship (parents-child) expressed in the terms matka, macierzyństwo (mother, maternity) and ojciec, ojcostwo (father, paternity). This study attempts to explore the conceptual relationship between populism and popular sovereignty within the legal discourse of constitutionalism in contemporary Argentina. To this end, the methodology chosen was based on conceptual history -Begriffsgeschichte-, which allows decomposing the “com- mon senses” of the constitutional discourse through a double operation. The first is semasiology, which implies a study of the emergence of the word “populism” and its conceptual function as an indicator and factor of a political context which defined the preconceptions of Argentine jurists from the 1950s onwards. This approach derives in the study of onomasiology, which observes the way in which such voice was inserted in a tension between two “constitutional traditions”. One liberal -1870-1930-, hostile to popular sovereignty, understanding it as tyranny of the majorities; and the other based on an unlimited popular constituent coming from the Schmittian reading of Sieyès, which culminated with the sanction of the National Constitution of 1949 during the first Peronism. The historical-conceptual key allows us to explain the use of “populism” at the level of juridical discourse, as a form of rehabilitation of the classical liberal tradition that counterposes the Cons- titution to the excess of a popular constituent conceived as potentially dangerous. The present study focuses on the topic of legal terminology from the perspective of translation of legal terms. It combines theorical foundation of state of the art of terminology and original research and observations. Given the potential divergence of equivalence of legal concepts, the issue is not as trivial as it may seem at first sight. Primarily based on onomaziological approach the database LegTerm offers translations of legal terms in Czech, French (France), Spanish (Spain) and Italian language. The database is accessible online and is developed by a team of researchers at the Faculty of Arts of University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. The study presents some of the basic principles of the database and illustrates various translation problems that might be encountered during the process of translation of legal terms on the basis of the data in LegTerm. The COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil revealed the polarization of political, economic and cultural points of view. Expressions like: "Stay at home"; "Wear a mask"; "Just a little grip" proved to be multifaceted and aroused different senses. In this context, this article aims to describe the internal argumentation and the external argumentation of full words and explain how the updating of a determined argumentative chain guides the constitution of the meaning of the discourse. The theoretical foundation that guides the analyzes is based on the principle that "Argumentation is in the language" proposed and developed since the 1960s by Oswald Ducrot and collaborators under the name of Argumentative Semantics (SA), Linguistic Semantics or Theory of Argumentation in Language (SUCH). The application of the simulation method allows observing, describing and explaining the constitution of the selected speech's meaning. Defining the functional nature of English anthroponyms in literary texts for children is complicated philological problems as these language elements perform an essential role in creating the system of images of any literary work. The complex study of anthroponyms functioning in literary texts for children is rather important because it meets the requirements of a new scientific paradigm of literary onomastics. The purpose of the research is to describe a scientific assumption of the phenomenon of literary anthroponymy in general, and that of proper names and literary anthroponyms in particular, and describe their functional peculiarities in literary texts for children. Special attention is paid to anthroponyms and their stylistic expressive abilities, which originate from the time when ancient philosophers regarded proper names in terms of their semantics and purpose of use only. The rapid development of literary onomastics makes it possible to point out different kinds of onyms, anthroponyms, toponyms, and the names of characters in fiction. The key feature of literary anthponyms is their distinguishing stylistic possibilities. It is proved that the functional nature of anthroponyms lies in the fact that they operate in literary texts as vivid markers of the author's intention, implementing definite ideological, esthetic, and cultural tasks. In a word, they update stylistic features (informative and emotive) at the textual level. Consequently, the wide use of stylistic expressive properties of anthroponyms in literary works led to the need to conceptualize their functional nature in literary texts for children. This study aimed to analyse the developmental trajectory of the accuracy and speed of naming among dyslexics and developing readers from 1st to 6th grade of primary education. It examined how familiarity with the stimulus influences the performance of different naming tasks in both groups and evaluated the link between naming speed and the Bangor Dyslexia Test. With a descriptive and correlational design, eight naming tasks and the Bangor Dyslexia Test (Miles, 1982; Outón & Suárez, 2010) were administered to a sample of 198 dyslexics and 245 developing readers. The results showed that the dyslexics were slower and more inaccurate in all the naming tasks, compared with the developing readers of the same age. Greater difficulty was observed with the less familiar stimuli. It became evident that naming performance improved with age among both groups of subjects. Finally, a greater number of significant and positive correlations were found between the naming tasks and the Bangor Dyslexia Test in the dyslexic group; the strongest relationship was obtained by naming letters. Our present work has as first objective an overview of the conceptual terminology following an onomasiological approach which allows us to work with the "term" as main linguistic tool in the animal science language. Due to the fact that animal science terminology is a "weak" terminology, most of its terms being taken from the general language, acting as terms only in specialized contexts, our second objective will be to make an analysis of animal science terms using not only onomasiology but also conceptual frames. Thus, we shall analyse the notions of domain shown by different theoretical models, such as the domain of knowledge, the domain of application, the domain of origin, etc. Afterwards, we will present logical and ontological relations in the conceptual system of animal science language. Personal names contain considerable meaningful information about biological and social characteristics of the name-bearer. They also routinely contain important data about cultural preferences in the naming process. Access to this level of information has been limited in the past by a lack of access to large-scale empirical data. As this investigation demonstrates, by utilizing a reliable large-scale sample of Beijing citizens, it is possible to empirically demonstrate onomastic imbalances in the occurrence of Chinese surnames, given names, and full names. In particular, this paper explores the matching imbalance between Chinese surnames and given names, a phenomenon which has as yet received scant attention in onomastic literature. As this article demonstrates, our innovative quantitative approach makes it possible to reveal statistically significant differences between real names and "random-matching names" that reflect a matching imbalance and imply the probable existence of underlying cultural preferences in Chinese naming processes. The key to this approach is generating a matching preference index (MPI) for names in a dataset. Alongside explaining how this approach is used, this paper offers possible reasons to explain why specific names have higher or lower MPI rankings. This review article surveys and comments on the key issues discussed in Iza Matusiak-Kempa's monograph "Nomen omen. Studium antroponimiczno-aksjologiczne". The monograph is a solid diachronic axiolinguistic analysis of over two thousand Polish surnames based on common nouns, considered in the axiological context. The analysis of the data leads one to identify how physical or psychological aspects of humans are conceptualized: these aspects are connected with values, which can be desirable or undesirable from the perspective of biologically and socially determined social needs. Those needs, in turn, may be linked with the colloquial knowledge of the world, pragmatic and adaptive approach to reality, and with the universal mechanisms of perception and nomination. A big advantage of the book is its interdisciplinary character. The author locates her reflection on antroponymy in research procedures based on a dialogue between linguistic description (with its focus on the conceptual system and the language of values) and other disciplines, normally rather distant from traditional onomastics (sociobiology; evolutionary, social, and cognitive psychology; anthropology, etc.). This is a very good example of how Edward O. Wilson's idea of consilience can be realized in onomastic, or generally in linguistic research: solutions are sought through an integration of the humanities, social sciences, and biological sciences. This article describes onomasiological explorations of Old Frisian and Old English lexis in the semantic field of KINSHIP through a novel, digital approach. In connecting Old Frisian lexis, drawn from the Altfriesisches Handwörterbuch (AFWB), to the overarching structure of A Thesaurus of Old English (TOE), a dataset has been created that shares a semantic framework with the one existing for Old English lexis. The connected resources are shared and analysed using the web application Evoke. Statistical data provided by this tool, such as the degree of lexicalization for this field, facilitates comparative analyses of the two historical languages. As this article demonstrates, the reuse of the onomasiological macrostructure of TOE offers new insights into linguistic and cultural aspects of these two languages and their language communities. The topic of figurative language in Old English (OE) has recently become the focus of substantial research. In this article, the authors will describe work on the semantic description of the lexicon of shame words in OE and in particular the taxonomical organisation of this lexicon on the basis of different kinds of semantic mappings (metonymic, metaphorical). Next, they will explore the use of the Evoke platform as a means of visualising and navigating this lexicon and show how it can be used to enrich A Thesaurus of Old English (TOE). The authors also describe ongoing work on the modelling and publication of this data as a linked data resource consisting of a lexicon and a taxonomy in SKOS of different kinds of metaphoric/metonymic sense shifts. This article discusses proof-of-concept research into the structure of the vocabularies of three Old English texts, Beowulf, Andreas and the Old English Martyrology. With the help of the Web application Evoke, which makes A Thesaurus of Old English (TOE) available in Linguistic Linked Data form, the words that occur in these three texts have been tagged within the existing onomasiological structure of TOE. This tagging process has resulted in prototypes of 'textual thesauri' for each of the three texts; such thesauri allow researchers to analyse the 'onomasiological profile' of a text, using the statistical tools that are built into Evoke. Since the same overarching structure has been used for all three texts, these texts can now be compared on an onomasiological level. As the article demonstrates, this comparative approach gives rise to novel research questions, as new and distinctive patterns of vocabulary use come to the surface. This article provides an introduction to the web application Evoke. This application offers functionality to navigate, view, extend, and analyse thesaurus content. The thesauri that can be navigated in Evoke are expressed in Linguistic Linked Data, an interoperable data form that enables the extension of thesaurus content with custom labels and allows for the linking of thesaurus content to other digital resources. As such, Evoke is a powerful research tool that facilitates its users to perform novel cultural linguistic analyses over multiple sources. This article further demonstrates the potential of Evoke by discussing how A Thesaurus of Old English was made available in the application and how this has already been adopted in the field of Old English studies. Names and naming practices reflect the socio-cultural background of a community. The giving of names is therefore not merely an act of labelling but represents constructs of identity that reflect the collective self-representation of a community and its worldviews. This study examines the naming practices of the Telugu in Malaysia and investigates the morphological structure and the semantic properties of Telugu names. To accomplish those research goals, survey interviews were conducted with 288 respondents in four different Malaysian states. Using descriptive statistics, a narrative analysis of the survey responses was used. Six experts in the Telugu culture were then invited for a focus group discussion. Before the results of this analysis are presented, detailed information about the Telugu and their naming traditions are provided. As will be shown here, among the Telugu, name-giving is a sacred act that is performed during a traditional naming ceremony called the Barasala. During this ancient oral onomastic tradition, names are passed on from one generation to the next and ancestral blessings are bestowed. As this study reveals, the structure of the patronymic names given during this ceremony reflect the religious beliefs and cultural identity of the Telugu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper discusses the role of metaphor in the name construction of sea creatures among Akan (Mfantse) people within the purview of onomasiology. The role of metaphor in the naming of sea creatures has been understudied. This paper is a step towards filling the gap by analyzing the role metaphor plays in constructing naming units for sea creatures. This study has a qualitative research design. Twelve (12) fishers were purposely sampled, three (3) each from four fishing towns: Anomabo, Apam, Sekondi (Sekunde) and Moree (Mowure). The data collection tool was a semi-structured interview. The paper finds that likeness between sea creatures and static and/or dynamic entities triggers names for sea creatures. It concludes that, metaphor is employed to achieve simpler forms for salient features, communicate non-codable salient features and condense multiple features in the quest to name sea creatures among the Mfantse people. Through these vital roles, a general metaphor SEA CREATURES ARE LAND ANIMALS/ENTITIES is realized. The encyclopedic knowledge, which the Mfantse people have about their environment is realized through their naming strategies. Gilquin (2008, What you think ain't what you get: Highly polysemous verbs in mind and language. In Jean-Remi Lapaire, Guillaume Desagulier & Jean-Baptiste Guignard (eds.), From gram to mind: Grammar as cognition, 235–255. Bordeaux: Presse Universitaires de Bordeaux) reported that light uses of verbs (e.g. make use) tend to outnumber concrete uses of the same verbs (e.g. make furniture) in corpora, whereas concrete senses tend to outnumber light senses in responses to elicitation tests. The differences between corpus frequency and cognitive salience remain an important and much-discussed question (cf. Arppe et al. 2010, Cognitive corpus linguistics: Five points of debate on current theory and methodology. Corpora 5(1). 1–27). The question is particularly complicated because both corpus frequency and cognitive salience are difficult to define, and are often left undefined. Operationalising and defining corpus frequencies are the issues at the heart of the present paper, which includes a close, manual semantic analysis of nearly 6,000 instances of three polysemous verbs with light and concrete uses, make, take, and give, in the British component of the International Corpus of English. The paper compares semasiological frequencies like those measured by Gilquin (2008) to onomasiological frequency measurements (cf. Geeraerts 1997, Diachronic prototype semantics: A contribution to historical lexicology. Oxford: Clarendon Press). Methodologically, the paper demonstrates that these approaches address fundamentally different research questions, and offer dramatically different results. Findings indicate that corpus frequencies in speech may correlate with elicitation test results, if the corpus frequencies are measured onomasiologically rather than semasiologically; I refer to Geeraerts's (2010, Theories of lexical semantics. The paper deals with the names for fig tree Ficus carica in the languages and dialects of the western part of the Balkan Peninsula (mainly in Albanian and Serbo-Croatian). The most ancient names of fig tree in the region are explored: Grk. συκιά, σύκα (< σῦκον, τῦκον), Lat. fīcus, and also Dalmat./Ital. pruna, brun-, mur-/mor etc. and South Slav. smokvа. The paper gives a complete classifi cation of more than 120 Albanian and Serbo-Croatian names for fig and its varieties. It is based on different characteristics (including – fruits’: size, colour, shape, flavour, moisture, the time of ripening, the thickness of the peel etc.). These names are etymologically analyzed. The phytonyms derived from expressive words, proper names and place names as well as facts of xeno-nomination are shown. It is demonstrated that the name of fig tree was given to some other plants: prickly pear, agave and birthwort. The name of fig fruit got into somatic lexis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article aims to study geographic names of Ayagoz region. Toponymy of Ayagoz region is tightly connected to the past of the nation. In the article we classify the formation of toponyms into four large groups. Based on this classification we distinguished in four lexical groups: (1) ancient Turkic layer; (2) Cuman layer; (3) entry layer and (4) basic linguistic layer. The statements are proved by some examples on the onomasiology of the Ayagoz region. Moreover, toponymy is further divided into individual and complex toponyms. We claim that geographic names, i.e. typonymy, describe physical and geographical features of the region in the past. By studying geographic names of Ayagoz region in close relationship with the history of the nation, its economy (farmery or agriculture), culture, faith and beliefs, we can come to many scientific findings and make conclusions. Acquired prosopagnosia is usually a consequence of bilateral or right hemisphere lesions and is often associated with topographical disorientation and dyschromatopsia. Left temporo-occipital lesions sometimes result in a face recognition disorder but in a context of visual object agnosia with spared familiarity feelings for faces, usually in left-handers. We describe a patient with a left temporo-occipital hemorrhagic lesion unexpectedly resulting in a deficit of face familiarity, which could represent a mild form of associative prosopagnosia. Our patient failed to feel familiarity feelings even with very well-known famous faces but had neither visual object agnosia nor defects with semantics or naming of celebrities. This was confirmed even when the patient was re-tested a year later. We speculate that a graded lateralization of face processing could be at the basis of occasional cases of prosopagnosia.
