Abstract

Silicon carbide (SiC) and its composites are candidate materials for the blanket components and for the first wall in a fusion reactor. If the SiC is used without any armor materials for the first wall, it is exposed by helium (He) plasma as well as hydrogen plasma. Characteristic surface morphology changes are reported for various materials by He plasma exposure. Thus, we exposed SiC specimens to He or simultaneous deuterium (D) and He (D + He) plasma by various conditions and then observed surface morphology changes by SEM. As a result, needle-like structures and whiskers-like structures at the tip were formed in He plasma and D + He irradiation, while only needle-like structures were formed in D plasma. Therefore, it indicated that the effects of He were attributed to form whiskers-like structures. Although the structures are different among He plasma, simultaneous D + He plasma and D plasma irradiations, sputtering is considered to be a dominant process for the formation of the structure formation. However, the effects of He atoms in the structure could also be attributed to form whiskers-like structures.

Abstract

Fe3O4 possesses unique properties such as high Curie temperature and half-metallic nature and therefore can function as a high-spin-polarized electrode in spintronic devices. In order to use this compound in such devices, the magnetic characteristics of multilayers used in these devices, which include Fe3O4, should be highly controllable. In this study, we fabricated Fe3O4/Pt or Cr (0-10 nm)/Fe systems through epitaxial growth on MgO(110) substrates in order to investigate the magnetic coupling in Fe3O4 and metallic hybrid systems. We found that these two systems show a marked difference in the dependence of the coercive field (H-c) of the Fe layer on the nonmagneticmetal- layer thickness. Hc for the system with Pt showed variation characteristics of interlayer exchange coupling in metal systems, while H-c increased monotonically with the thickness of the Cr layer.

Abstract

The results of studying the La2-xSrxCuO4 (x = 0.077−0.195) crystals with the microwave absorption, direct current resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements are presented. The doping-temperature phase diagram with the boundaries of the areas with charge density waves, superconducting fluctuation and the bulk superconductivity state is plotted. The doping range of the charge density wave existence is found to be broader than that obtained from the X-Ray Diffraction study. It spreads at least down to x = 0.077. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract The sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) is generally associated with greater postoperative stability than the intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO); however, it entails a risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage. In contrast, IVRO has the disadvantages of slow postoperative osseous healing and projection of the antegonial notch, but inferior alveolar nerve damage is believed to be less likely. The purposes of this study were to compare the osseous healing processes associated with SSRO and IVRO and to investigate changes in mandibular width after IVRO in 29 patients undergoing mandibular setback. On computed tomography images, osseous healing was similar in patients undergoing SSRO and IVRO at 1 year after surgery. Projection of the antegonial notch occurred after IVRO, but returned to the preoperative state within 1 year. The results of the study indicate that IVRO is equivalent to SSRO with regard to both bone healing and morphological recovery of the mandible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present the analysis of the light curves of 9 high-magnification single-lens gravitational microlensing events with lenses passing over source stars, including OGLE-2004-BLG-254, MOA-2007-BLG-176, MOA-2007-BLG-233/OGLE-2007-BLG-302, MOA-2009-BLG-174, MOA-2010-BLG-436, MOA-2011-BLG-093, MOA-2011-BLG-274, OGLE-2011-BLG-0990/MOA-2011-BLG-300, and OGLE-2011-BLG-1101/MOA-2011-BLG-325. For all events, we measure the linear limb-darkening coefficients of the surface brightness profile of source stars by measuring the deviation of the light curves near the peak affected by the finite-source effect. For 7 events, we measure the Einstein radii and the lens-source relative proper motions. Among them, 5 events are found to have Einstein radii less than 0.2 mas, making the lenses candidates of very low-mass stars or brown dwarfs. For MOA-2011-BLG-274, especially, the small Einstein radius of $\theta_{\rm E}\sim 0.08$ mas combined with the short time scale of $t_{\rm E}\sim 2.7$ days suggests the possibility that the lens is a free-floating planet. For MOA-2009-BLG-174, we measure the lens parallax and thus uniquely determine the physical parameters of the lens. We also find that the measured lens mass of $\sim 0.84\ M_\odot$ is consistent with that of a star blended with the source, suggesting that the blend is likely to be the lens. Although we find planetary signals for none of events, we provide exclusion diagrams showing the confidence levels excluding the existence of a planet as a function of the separation and mass ratio., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables
