Se realizó un estudio de la distribución de la temperatura y la salinidad en la parte interna del Golfo de Nicoya a lo largo de un año. Se presentan los resultados de estos análisis en la superficie y fondo, para los dos ciclos de marea, y para las dos estaciones del año. Se encuentra que la dinámica de la parte interna del golfo continua siendo gobernada por la descarga de los ríos que desembocan en él. Comparaciones con los resultados de investigaciones anteriores podrían indicar cambios en la dinámica del Golfo de Nicoya.

En este trabajo se analizan las características del oleaje en agua profunda y su propagación hacia la costa de Cabo Velas, Guanacaste, a fin de ubicar infraestructura costera y para el aprovechamiento recreacional seguro de sus playas. Se utilizaron registros históricos de datos recolectados por barcos que han pasado por esta área y se encontró que las alturas de las olas más frecuentes sobre esta región son entre 1 y 1,5 metros, con períodos de 4 y 5 segundos y con direcciones del oeste, noroeste y suroeste. El análisis de la propagación de oleaje hacia la costa se realizó utilizando un reciente modelo numérico de refracción de olas (Ebersole, 1984). El análisis sobre una ensenada de Cabo Velas, Playa Carbón, indica que esta playa está protegida ante el impacto de las olas más frecuentes del oeste y del suroeste. Para la condición más severa del oleaje que se produce en esas direcciones, se encontró que la batimetría de la paltaforma continental, al frente de la playa, produce disminución de la energía (altura) de las olas producidas mar adentro.

Se utilizaron los datos batimétricos GEBCO-08 de la UNESCO para estudiar las provincias marinas alrededor de la Isla del Coco. Se analizaron las montañas submarinas que tuvieran menos de 1000m de profundidad en esta cordillera. Montes submarinos localizados al sur, sureste y oeste de la isla, fueron identificados con profundidades de 300m desde la superficie del mar, y con alturas de hasta 2700m desde el fondo marino. La interconexión ecológica con la Isla del Coco de estos montes debe ser efectiva, como lo serán también dentro del corredor biológico del Pacifico Tropical Este. Se realizó un estudio particular de mayor resolución alrededor de la Isla del Coco para identificar los alcances de la plataforma de la isla. Se encontró un monte submarino a 14.8km al noreste de la isla, con profundidades medidas de 30-40m, que no había sido reportado. Con este rasgo submarino se explica la presencia de pescadores alrededor del este sitio, un sitio conocido en el ambiente de los pescadores, pero que aún no se había asociado a algún fenómeno oceánico en particular. Aunque más estudio es necesario, de comprobarse la conectividad biológica entre los montes submarinos y la Isla del Coco, los límites y las políticas ambientales deberán ser modificados, de manera que se proteja adecuadamente este sistema ecológico.

Se propone un método para evaluar enriquecimiento de metales en sedimentos de Bahía Culebra y en el Golfo de Nicoya de Costa Rica a través de la normalización de los elementos y el aluminio usando la regresión lineal de las concentraciones de los elementos y el Aluminio. Las distribuciones de los elementos manganeso y el estroncio de Bahía Culebra no cumplen con las pruebas de normalización y de regresión lineal, indicando una distribución no natural o enriquecimiento de estos elementos en esta región. En el Golfo de Nicoya los elementos cobre, zinc, rubidio y el estroncio no cumplen ya sea con la hipótesis de normalidad o con la regresión lineal respecto al aluminio, indicando un posible enriquecimiento de estos elementos en esta región. La mayoría de las concentraciones de los elementos tanto en ambos sitios de muestreo, con excepción del cromo, se encuentran dentro de los ámbitos naturales encontrados en las rocas o en las arcillas de sedimentos marinos a nivel mundial, y dentro de los ámbitos de las concentraciones de otros estudios realizados en estas mismas regiones. El cromo muestra valores promedio más allá de las concentraciones naturales, siendo la concentración de algunas muestras en el Golfo de Nicoya hasta diez veces mayores que el valor de una bahía con alta contaminación de este elemento.

Dendrons of pyrene derivatives were attached to a porphyrin core. A marked effect in solution for the dendrimers was observed in the absorption spectra. All the compounds obtained were characterized by 1H-, 13C-NMR, FTIR, UV-vis, MALDI-TOF or FAB+ mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The cubic nonlinear optical behavior of some the synthesized compounds was tested via Z-Scan measurements in spin-coated film samples.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar si la introgresión de líneas exóticas de sorgo incrementa la variabilidad del tamaño de la gluma y el porcentaje de grano descubierto. La población NESC7 (P1) se formó durante cuatro ciclos agrícolas (2005- 2007), con un ciclo de introgresión, y a partir del quinto ciclo agrícola (2008) se estimó la variabilidad genética del caracter a través de 120 familias de medios hermanos y 110 familias de autohermanos. Se utilizó la metodología de Bloques Incompletos en dos localidades, Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (FAUANL) en Marín Nuevo León y el INIFAP en Río Bravo, Tamaulipas. La introgresión de líneas exóticas con menor tamaño de gluma y cobertura de grano en la población NESC7 (P1), mostró una disminución del tamaño de la gluma (13%), un incremento del porcentaje de grano descubierto (28%), y una mayor proporción de ambas características de la varianza aditiva (5% y 1%), heredabilidad en sentido estrecho de 22% y de 1% y mayor respuesta a la selección (4% y 0,3%).

Utilizando Fluorescencia de Rayos-X dispersiva en energía, que permite la evaluación simultánea de los isótopos estables de trece elementos, se analizaron setenta y cuatro muestras de sedimentos marinos de las regiones intermareales para las costas del Caribe y del Pacífico Norte, Central y Sur de Costa Rica. Los elementos calcio y hierro fueron los más abundantes y son representativos del origen de la formación natural del sedimento, estando el primero asociado a procesos biogénicos, tales como sistemas arrecifales coralinos cercanos al sitio de muestreo y el segundo esta asociado mas bien a sedimentos de carácter litogénico. En general, las playas del Pacífico Norte mostraron la mayor concentración de calcio lo que es indicativo de mayor existencia de estructuras arrecifales en sus alrededores. El análisis de los elementos traza, ligados a un origen terrígeno, muestras un patrón similar al hierro en la mayoría de las regiones. Las playas del Pacífico Central y Sur muestran las mayores concentraciones de estos elementos traza, indicando una mayor contribución terrígena y/o poco contribución de carbonato de calcio debido al escaso desarrollo de estructuras coralinas en estas regiones. Por último, el análisis no mostró evidencia de contaminación antropogénica y solo una sección al norte de la Playa Puerto Viejo presentaron concentraciones altas de plomo zinc y titanio, lo cual podría estar ligado a fuentes hidrotermales en esta regiónUsing an energy dispersive X-Ray fluorescence analysis, simultaneous evaluation of K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Ge, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr and Pb in 74 marine sediment samples from the Costa Rica intertidal zones was conducted. Samples were collected between June 1999 and December 2001, from Caribbean and Pacific beaches of Costa Rica. Calcium and iron showed the highest abundances and are indicators of the natural origin of the sediments. Calcium is associated with biogenic processes such as coral reefs near the sampling sites and iron indicates a terrigenous origin. In general, the beaches of the Caribbean and North Pacific regions showed the greatest concentration of calcium. This is indicative of the abundant reef structures near these beaches. The beaches of the Central and South Pacific show the greatest iron concentrations, indicating an important lithosphere contribution and/or little contribution of calcium carbonate due to the poor development of coralline structures near the sampling sites. Finally, the analyses did not show evidence of elements associated with anthropogenic pollution. Only a northern section of Puerto Viejo beach showed high concentrations of lead, zinc and titanium, perhaps associated with hydrothermal sources

Se estudia la estructura espacial y vertical de las corrientes en el Golfo de Nicoya y su relación con los ciclos de marea usando correntímetros. Se encuentra que en el interior del golfo, la variación vertical de las corrientes marinas aumenta conforme aumenta la profundidad. La estación de Isla Chira muestra un menor grado de variación, tanto en corrientes como en temperatura. La estación entre Isla San Lucas y Puntarenas es la más estratificada en flujos en esta región. Se midieron magnitudes de corrientes sobre los 100 cm/seg durante mareas vivas extraordinarias. Se encontraron desfases del quiebre o cambio de flujo de las mareas entre superficie y fondo, de hasta 100 minutos. En general en esta parte interna los flujos son hacia el interior del Golfo cuando la marea está entrando y hacia el exterior, cuando la marea está bajando. En el exterior del Golfo la circulación es más compleja. A lo largo de un eje Tárcoles-Negritos, se identifican flujos que rotan de manera distinta entre superficie y fondo, cuyos patrones no pueden ser fácilmente explicados según los ciclos de la marea respecto a predicciones mareales en Puntarenas. Estos resultados demuestran que la variación espacial de las corrientes marinas del Golfo de Nicoya está relacionada no solo a la estructura termohalina, sino que también, a los ciclos y ámbitos de las mareas que se producen en este cuerpo de aguaThe spatial and vertical structure of the water currents and its relationship with the tidal cycles were studied using current meters in the Gulf of Nicoya. In the upper gulf, the vertical marine current differences increase as the depth increases. The water column at the station near Chira Island (upper gulf) shows the smaller changes in currents and in temperature. The flow at the station between San Lucas Island and Puntarenas (middle gulf) is the most stratified in this region. Currents with magnitudes over 100 cm/seg were measured during spring tides. Changes in the lags of the surface and bottom tidal flows were measured on the order of 100 minutes. In general, in this upper region the flows are toward the head of the gulf when the tide is flooding and toward the mouth when the tide is ebbing. In the lower gulf the circulation is more complex. Along an axis between Tárcoles and Negritos Islands, changes of velocity vectors are identified between surface and bottom. The current rotates in a different way in the water column in this region and their patterns cannot be explained only by the tidal cycles predicted for Puntarenas. These results demonstrate that the spatial and vertical variation of the marine currents of the Gulf of Nicoya is not only related to the thermohaline structure, but also to the tidal cycles and tide ranges that take place in this estuary

Different thermoelastic parameters, for example, the acoustic attenuation and the speed of sound, are fundamental for instrumental calibration and quantitative characterization of organic-based dissolutions. In this work, these parameters as functions of the concentration of an organic dye (crystal-violet: CV) in distillated water (H2O) based dissolutions are investigated. The speed of sound was measured by the pulsed-laser photoacoustic technique (PLPA), which consists in the generation of acoustic-waves by the optical absorption of pulsed light in a given material (in this case a liquid sample). The thermally generated sound-waves traveling through a fluid are detected with two piezoelectric sensors separated by a known distance. An appropriate processing of the photoacoustic signals allows an adequate data analysis of the generated waves within the system, providing an accurate determination of the speed of sound as function of the dye-concentration. The acoustic attenuation was calculated based on the distance of the two PZT-microphones to an acoustic-source point and performing linear-fitting of the experimental data (RMS-amplitudes) as function of the dye-concentration. An important advantage of the PLPA-method is that it can be implemented with poor or null optical transmitting materials permitting the characterization of the mechanical and concentration/aggregate properties of dissolved organic compounds.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are expected to provide a source of ultra high energy cosmic rays, accompanied with potentially detectable neutrinos at neutrino telescopes. Recently, IceCube has set an upper bound on this neutrino flux well below theoretical expectation. We investigate whether this mismatch between expectation and observation can be due to neutrino decay. We demosntrate the phenomenological consistency and theoretical plausibility of the neutrino decay hypothesis. A potential implication is the observability of majoron-emitting neutrinoless double beta decay.

ObjectiveTo evaluate new medical devices and drugs pertinent to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021.Data sourcesPublicly available FDA device and drug approvals from ENT (ear, nose, and throat), anesthesia, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery FDA committees.Review methodsFDA device and therapeutic approvals were identified and reviewed by members of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's Medical Devices and Drugs Committee. Two independent reviewers assessed the relevance of devices and drugs to otolaryngologists. Medical devices and drugs were then allocated to their respective subspecialty fields for critical review based on available scientific literature.ConclusionsThe Medical Devices and Drugs Committee reviewed 1153 devices and 52 novel drugs that received FDA approval in 2021 (67 ENT, 106 anesthesia, 618 general surgery and plastic surgery, 362 neurosurgery). Twenty-three devices and 1 therapeutic agent relevant to otolaryngology were included in the state of the art review. Advances spanned all subspecialties, including over-the-counter hearing aid options in otology, expanding treatment options for rhinitis in rhinology, innovative laser-safe endotracheal tubes in laryngology, novel facial rejuvenation and implant technology in facial plastic surgery, and advances in noninvasive and surgical treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea.Implications for practiceFDA approvals for new technology and pharmaceuticals present new opportunities across subspecialties in otolaryngology. Clinicians' nuanced understanding of the safety, advantages, and limitations of these innovations ensures ongoing progress in patient care.

The Latinx population is currently the largest ethnic minority group in the USA. Moreover, studies demonstrate that Latinx youth are at a higher risk for exposure to community violence and for negative school outcomes compared to their non-Latinx white peers. Though more attention has been devoted to understanding negative school outcomes, there is surprisingly little empirical data directly testing associations between community violence and academic outcomes. Additionally, little research explores potential moderators, such as youth coping mechanisms, that may buffer the negative effects of community violence on academic outcomes in Latinx adolescents. In the current study, we examine associations between exposure to community violence, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, coping, and academic achievement in a sample of 168 Latinx adolescents (age range = 11-15, 56.2% girls). We hypothesized that (a) exposure to community violence is negatively associated with academic achievement, (b) Active Coping is positively associated with academic achievement, and (c) Avoidant Coping is negatively associated with academic achievement. We also hypothesized that coping would moderate associations between violence exposure and academic outcomes, with Active Coping expected to be a protective factor and Avoidant Coping expected to be a risk factor. In line with our hypotheses, bivariate results demonstrate that violence exposure and posttraumatic stress symptoms are negatively associated with grade point average (GPA). Multivariate analyses controlling for baseline GPA, however, revealed that only youth age and Active Coping were independently associated with GPA. Results provide empirical data on associations between violence exposure and GPA and highlight potential intervention targets for Latinx students in academic settings.

ObjectivesTo evaluate new drugs and devices relevant to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery that were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2020.Data sourcesPublicly available device and therapeutic approvals from ENT (ear, nose, and throat), anesthesia, neurology (neurosurgery), and plastic and general surgery FDA committees.Review methodsMembers of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery's Medical Devices and Drugs Committee reviewed new therapeutics and medical devices from a query of the FDA's device and therapeutic approvals. Two independent reviewers assessed the drug's or device's relevance to otolaryngology, classified to subspecialty field, with a critical review of available scientific literature.ConclusionsThe Medical Devices and Drugs Committee reviewed 53 new therapeutics and 1094 devices (89 ENT, 140 anesthesia, 511 plastic and general surgery, and 354 neurology) approved in 2020. Ten drugs and 17 devices were considered relevant to the otolaryngology community. Rhinology saw significant improvements around image guidance systems; indications for cochlear implantation expanded; several new monoclonal therapeutics were added to head and neck oncology's armamentarium; and several new approvals appeared for facial plastics surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and comprehensive otolaryngology.Implications for practiceNew technologies and pharmaceuticals offer the promise of improving how we care for otolaryngology patients. However, judicious introduction of innovations into practice requires a nuanced understanding of safety, advantages, and limitations. Working knowledge of new drugs and medical devices approved for the market helps clinicians tailor patient care accordingly.

Background: Although the link between substance use and criminal behavior is well-established, associations between the use of specific substances and specific criminal charges remains unclear. That is, there are mixed findings in the literature, and the majority of extant literature focuses only on associations between alcohol and marijuana use and a limited range of charges. Objective: The current study examined 30-day frequency of use of various substances (i.e., traditional tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, e-cigarettes, and prescription drugs) prior to detainment, percentages of youth charged with various offenses, and whether certain offenses were associated with more frequent use of particular substances prior to detainment among detained youth. Additionally, differences in substance-charge associations among Black and White youth were evaluated. Method: Detained youth (N = 235; 71.9% male; M age = 15.59 years) from two facilities self-reported on their substance use and the facilities provided charge data. Results: Marijuana was the most frequent substance used and violent-related offenses were the most common charge received. Interestingly, several charges (i.e., sex-, weapon-, and violent-related offenses) were associated with less frequent use of tobacco and/or marijuana use, but youth who were detained for non-criminal reasons (i.e., children in need of care) reported more frequent use of various substances than youth detained for criminal charges. Findings were more similar than different for Black and White youth, with very few differences evident. Conclusions: Children in need of care appear more at risk for certain substances than those detained for criminal offenses, with associations similar for detained Black and White youth.
