Abstract

Abstract Background Humanitarian crises bring unique, and potentially growing challenges to people with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We aimed to determine, in youth with T1D (mean age (± 1SD) 0–17.9 years) within and coming from humanitarian crises settings (HCS), the reported prevalence that meet international consensus targets for glycaemic, blood pressure and lipid management, and incidence of severe hypoglycaemia or diabetic ketoacidosis. Methods A narrative review of quantitative data was conducted, using a systematic process. MEDLINE (Ovid), Global Health, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycINFO, Cochrane trials, and the reference lists of eligible records were searched (January 2014-February 2024); ten records covering ten separate studies were retrieved. Results Glycaemic management was consistently suboptimal in HCS. However, among individuals coming from HCS, glycaemia varied. Across both groups, data relating to blood pressure, lipids, severe hypoglycaemia or diabetic ketoacidosis were either unavailable or limited. Conclusion Findings expose the dearth of data relating to defined youth with T1D within and coming from HCS, leaving the status of this population largely uncharacterised. With limited data indicating suboptimal T1D management, there is a pressing need for the development of a consensus guideline on, and core indicators relating to such youth within and coming from HCS, plus monitoring systems and outcome data.

73. Research Administrators' Perceptions of Marginality, Isolation, and Mattering: Considerations for University and Personal Job Characteristics

Abstract

Purpose: Individuals have an innate desire to matter to others. Perceived mattering, the cognitive process of self-evaluating one's significance to other people, plays an integral role in self-perception, especially among marginalized populations. This descriptive study investigated research administrators' perceived mattering and factors that influence feelings of marginality and isolation in their workplaces. Methods: The survey instrument, Marginalization in Research Administration Survey, was electronically distributed to 7,500 research administrators who are members of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA). The e-survey items were derived from the Physical Education Marginalization and Isolation Survey (PE-MAIS) (Gaudreault et al., 2017) and the Perceived Mattering Questionnaire-Physical Education (PMQ-PE) (Richards et al., 2017), which are validated instruments used to capture perceptions of marginality and isolation (PE-MAIS) and perceived mattering (PMQ-PE). Survey items were modified for word choice to be specific to research administration. Results: The study revealed salary range as a significant factor among research administrators who perceived marginality, isolation, and mattering. Specifically, research administrators with the lowest salary reported higher levels of marginality and isolation than those with higher salaries. Mid-career research administrators seeing increases in salary and time on the job reported high levels of marginality and isolation. Number of years in the profession influenced groups' perceived isolation depending on organization type. Lastly, perceived mattering increased through each salary stage. Discussion/Conclusions: Understanding how salary is likely tied to prioritization and the roles research administrators assume based on their organization type helps to identify perceptions of mattering within the social context of the research administrator profession and provide necessary information to address marginality.

74. Information Communication Technology Integration via Bloom's Taxonomy in Accountancy Curriculum

Abstract

Accountants should stay relevant to the business world, making Information Communication Technology (ICT) competencies essential, as highlighted by professional bodies and employers. For this reason, how and when ICT competencies can be integrated into the accountancy curriculum following the guidelines of Bloom's taxonomy was investigated. ICT competency integration into the accountancy curriculum remains a challenge at South African universities, further highlighted by online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research followed a qualitative approach. Data collection was done through a literature review of Bloom's taxonomy, ICT requirements from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and employers, responses from a self-developed questionnaire from lecturers of two participating universities focusing on the perceived inclusion of ICT competencies and when these competencies should be taught in the accountancy curriculum. The participants agreed with the inclusion of MS Excel and MS Word with a discrepancy of when. Contribution: Based on the sample selected, the results highlighted that how and when ICT competencies could be integrated is not in line with Bloom's taxonomy approach. It is recommended that universities integrate ICT competencies for MS Excel and MS Word in the accountancy curriculum through the assignments already available in a structured and scaffolded approach. This research contributes to the body of knowledge of how and when ICT competencies can be integrated into the accountancy curriculum. Higher education must keep up with the fast-changing business environment and aim to transform their learning accordingly through applying Bloom's taxonomy in a holistic view when integrating ICT competencies within the accountancy curriculum.

Abstract

Abstract Background The use of medical abortion using either a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, or misoprostol alone has contributed to increased safety and decreased mortality and morbidity. The availability of quality medical abortion medicines is an essential component in the provision of quality abortion care. Understanding the factors that influence the availability of medical abortion medicines is important to help in-country policymakers, program planners, and providers improve availability and use of medical abortion. Methods Using a national assessment protocol and an availability framework, we assessed the availability of medical abortion medicines across five elements (Registration & Quality Assurance, Policy & Financing, Procurement & Distribution, Provider Knowledge, and End-user Knowledge) in eight countries: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and Uganda between November 2020 and November 2021. The assessment included an online desk review and virtual or telephone-based key informant interviews. Results Registration of medical abortion medicines—misoprostol or co-packaged mifepristone and misoprostol products (combi-pack)—was established in all countries, except the Central African Republic. In Lesotho and Eswatini, the national regulatory agency is still in development and importation of Cytotec™ misoprostol is permitted for off-label use in obstetrics/gynecology. Misoprostol was included in all countries’ essential medicines lists, except Botswana. Burkina Faso and Democratic Republic of the Congo also include mifepristone on their essential medicines list and medical abortion regimens in national abortion care service and delivery guidelines. Additionally, guidelines clarified health worker roles in the provision of abortion care specific to the legal context of each country and permitted task-shifting of abortion service provision. Where guidelines did not exist, medical abortion medicines and their use were not well integrated into the public health care system. Community awareness activities on abortion rights and services have been limited in scope across the countries assessed, however, end-users' awareness of misoprostol as a medical abortion medicine was reported. Conclusion The national landscape assessments identified several cross-cutting opportunities to improve availability of medical abortion medicines, including importing quality-assured medical abortion medicines; developing nationally approved abortion service and delivery guidelines that optimize healthcare worker roles; and expanding communication strategies to reach end-users and pharmacists.

Abstract

Collaborative machine learning (ML) is widely used to enable institutions to learn better models from distributed data. While collaborative approaches to learning intuitively protect user data, they remain vulnerable to either the server, the clients, or both, deviating from the protocol. Indeed, because the protocol is asymmetric, a malicious server can abuse its power to reconstruct client data points. Conversely, malicious clients can corrupt learning with malicious updates. Thus, both clients and servers require a guarantee when the other cannot be trusted to fully cooperate. In this work, we propose a peer-to-peer (P2P) learning scheme that is secure against malicious servers and robust to malicious clients. Our core contribution is a generic framework that transforms any (compatible) algorithm for robust aggregation of model updates to the setting where servers and clients can act maliciously. Finally, we demonstrate the computational efficiency of our approach even with 1-million parameter models trained by 100s of peers on standard datasets., Comment: Accepted at NeurIPS 2023

Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract

We compute the density of a spin-$\frac32$ particle, the raritron, produced at the end of inflation due to gravitational interactions. We consider a background inflaton condensate as the source of this production, mediated by the exchange of a graviton. This production greatly exceeds the gravitational production from the emergent thermal bath during reheating. The relic abundance limit sets an absolute minimum mass for a stable raritron, though there are also model dependent constraints imposed by unitarity. We also examine the case of gravitational production of a gravitino, taking into account the goldstino evolution during reheating. Abstract

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract

We consider the effects of fragmentation on the post-inflationary epoch of reheating. In simple single field models of inflation, an inflaton condensate undergoes an oscillatory phase once inflationary expansion ends. The equation of state of the condensate depends on the shape of the scalar potential, $V(\phi)$, about its minimum. Assuming $V(\phi) \sim \phi^k$, the equation of state parameter is given by $w = P_\phi/\rho_\phi = (k-2)/(k+2)$. The evolution of condensate and the reheating process depend on $k$. For $k \ge 4$, inflaton self-interactions may lead to the fragmentation of the condensate and alter the reheating process. Indeed, these self-interactions lead to the production of a massless gas of inflaton particles as $w$ relaxes to 1/3. If reheating occurs before fragmentation, the effects of fragmentation are harmless. We find, however, that the effects of fragmentation depend sensitively to the specific reheating process. Reheating through the decays to fermions is largely excluded since perturbative couplings would imply that fragmentation occurs before reheating and in fact could prevent reheating from completion. Abstract

We report out-of-equilibrium stabilization of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble through autonomous feedback by a driven optical cavity. For a magnetic field applied at an angle to the cavity axis, dispersive coupling to the cavity provides sensitivity to a combination of the longitudinal and transverse spin. Coherent backaction by cavity light onto the atoms, conditioned by the optical cavity susceptibility, stabilizes the collective spin state at an arbitrary energy. The set point tracking and closed-loop gain spectrum of the feedback system are characterized and found to agree closely with analytic predictions.

Abstract We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $$g_\mu - 2 \equiv 2 a_\mu $$ g μ - 2 ≡ 2 a μ , in the context of supersymmetric models beyond the CMSSM, where the unification of either the gaugino masses $$M_{1,2,3}$$ M 1 , 2 , 3 or sfermion and Higgs masses is relaxed, taking into account the measured mass of the Higgs boson, $$m_H$$ m H , the cosmological dark matter density and the direct detection rate. We find that the model with non-unified gaugino masses can make a contribution $$\Delta a_\mu \sim 20 \times 10^{-10}$$ Δ a μ ∼ 20 × 10 - 10 to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, for example if $$M_{1,2} \sim 600\; \textrm{GeV}$$ M 1 , 2 ∼ 600 GeV and $$M_3\sim 8 \; \textrm{TeV}$$ M 3 ∼ 8 TeV . The model with non-universal sfermion and Higgs masses can provide even larger $$\Delta a_\mu \sim 24 \times 10^{-10}$$ Δ a μ ∼ 24 × 10 - 10 if the sfermion masses for the first and the second generations are $$ \sim 400 \; \textrm{GeV}$$ ∼ 400 GeV and that of the third is $$ \sim 8 \; \textrm{TeV}$$ ∼ 8 TeV . We discuss the prospects for collider searches for supersymmetric particles in specific benchmark scenarios illustrating these possibilities, focusing in particular on the prospects for detecting the lighter smuon and the lightest neutralino.

94. Pain of the Past and Present: An Identity Conscious Exploration of the Prevalence and Scope of Educator Primary and Secondary Trauma

Abstract

Research on trauma in education has primarily focused on the student experience while the prevalence and scope of educator trauma remains largely unexplored, especially through an identity-conscious lens. This study addresses the gap in our understanding of educator trauma through a national survey of United States educators. Results indicated that most educators have experienced primary trauma and a majority have also experienced secondary trauma as a result of their students' traumatic experiences. Results further revealed that educator primary trauma differs across age, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation, while educator secondary trauma differs by school context. Implications for educational leaders and administrators are considered, as well as directions for further research centering identity-conscious approaches to educator trauma.

95. Physical Activity Intervention Improves Executive Function and Language Development during Early Childhood: The Active Early Learning Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of the Active Early Learning (AEL) childcare center-based physical activity intervention on early childhood executive function and expressive vocabulary via a randomized controlled trial. Three-hundred-and-fourteen preschool children (134 girls) aged 3-5 years from 15 childcare centers were randomly assigned to the intervention (8 centers; n = 170 children) or control group (7 centers, n = 144 children) in May 2019. Participants were mostly Australian (85%) and from slightly higher areas of socio-economic status than the Australian average. There was an AEL intervention effect on inhibition ([Beta] = 0.5, p = 0.033, d = 0.29) and expressive vocabulary ([Beta] = 1.97, p = 0.001, d = 0.24). Integration of the AEL physical activity intervention into the daily childcare routine was effective in enhancing children's executive function and expressive language development.

96. Prospective Primary Teachers' Initial Mathematical Problem-Solving Knowledge

Abstract

Mathematics teacher candidates enter teacher education with knowledge that could support or limit their learning. It is therefore important to gain insights of this knowledge to inform teacher education. This paper offers such insights for prospective mathematics teachers' initial knowledge of problem solving (PS) for teaching at the beginning of their teacher education programme. It reports on a study that investigated three categories of problem-solving knowledge for teaching: problem characterization, the PS process, and PS disposition. Participants were 109 prospective primary teachers at a university in Spain. Data sources were questionnaires designed for the study to explore the initial knowledge held by the participants for three categories of problem-solving knowledge. Findings indicated that the participants' knowledge was stronger regarding the PS process and disposition than for problem characterization but had limitations that needed to be addressed in their teacher preparation programme.

Abstract

BackgroundThe path to becoming a physician is challenging, with various barriers influencing medical student and resident physician residency and fellowship training career decisions. Studies comparing perceived obstacles at disparate training levels are limited and given these obstacles are dynamic, studies are frequently needed to evaluate perceived barriers to pursuing residency specialty or fellowship of interest for physician trainees.ObjectiveTo evaluate and compare perceived barriers to obtaining residency specialty or fellowship of choice for medical students and resident physicians, respectively.MethodsA Likert scale survey assessing perceived barriers was administered via the listservs of medical schools and organizations in 2021. Differences in the Likert scale score mean between medical students and resident physicians were measured with student t-tests (2-sided).ResultsA total of 404 medical trainees participated (301 medical students and 103 resident physicians). Medical students indicated lack of opportunity to obtain alpha omega alpha membership as the most crucial perceived barrier (mean Likert scale score ± standard deviation, 4.01±1.97), followed by USMLE Step 1 score (3.92±1.89) and lack of home program in specialty/fellowship of interest (3.62±1.85). Similarly, resident physicians implicated the lack of a home program in a specialty/fellowship of interest as the most prominent barrier (3.48±1.78), followed by lack of connections/networking (3.17±1.50) and probability of matching (3.14±1.44).ConclusionsThe lack of a home program was an important barrier to pursuing a specialty or fellowship of choice for both medical students and resident physicians, respectively, and may have been heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
