Contribution to A.D.Sakharov memorial volume. A detailed review of the electroweak radiative corrections to the Z-boson decays in the framework of the Minimal Standard Modelm (MSM) is presented. After a short historical introduction we describe the optimal parametrization of the MSM, especially of the Born approximation, and derive expressions for the one-loop electroweak corrections. Finally a global fit of all relevant experimental data is performed, resulting in fitted values of the top-quark mass, m_t, and strong coupling constant /alpha_s. Allowed range for the value of the Higgs mass, m_H, is discussed. It is assumed that three lepton families $(\nu_e, e)$, $(\nu_{\mu}, \mu)$, $(\nu_{\tau}, \tau)$ carry charges, which are sources of electronic, muonic and tauonic massless vector particles, respectively. Consequences of possible existence of leptonic photon are considered for a range of values of leptonic charge. In the case of a strong Coulomb-like leptonic repulsion between electrons the existence of ordinary condensed matter is impossible: antineutrinos cannot neutralize this destructive repulsion. The upper limit of leptonic charge is inferred from the E\"{o}tv\"os type experiments. If however there exist light stable scalar bosons with leptonic charge (e.g. singlet antisneutrinos) they may neutralize the electron repulsion. Possible experimental manifestations of such leptonic bosons in gases and condensed matter are briefly discussed., Comment: 13 pages in standard LaTeX

This report consists of three parts. In Chapter 1 we present a brief description of the LEPTOP approach for the calculation of the radiative corrections in the Minimal Standard Model. The approach is based on the one-loop approximation with respect to the genuinely electroweak interaction for which simple explicit analytical formulae are valid. Starting from $G_{\mu}, m_Z$ and $\bar{\alpha}\equiv \alpha(m^2_Z)$ as the main input parameters, we consider all observables of the $Z$ boson decays and the mass of the $W$ boson on the same footing. The dressing with gluonic corrections is performed by using the results of calculations published by other authors. In Chapter 2 theoretical uncertainties inherent to our approach and hence to the LEPTOP computer program are analyzed. In Chapter 3 we describe the Fortran code of LEPTOP. The analysis of the newest data on the leptonic $Z$-decays and $m_W$ appears to reveal the first manifestations of electroweak radiative corrections. In fact, these data differ, at the level of $2\sigma$, from their electroweak Born values, while they agree, to within $1\sigma$, with the theoretical values which take the electroweak radiative corrections into account. A set of equations representing the $W/Z$ mass ratio and various observables of $Z$ decays in terms of $\bar\alpha \equiv\alpha (m_Z)$, $G_{\mu}$, $m_Z$, $m_t$, $m_H$, $\bar\alpha_{s} \equiv\alpha_{s} (m_Z)$, $m_b$ and $m_\tau$ (all other fermion masses being neglected) are compared with the latest data of the four LEP detectors, which at the level of one standard deviation coincide with their Born values. Our global fit gives: $m_t = 161^{+ 15 +16}_{-16 -22} \bar\alpha_{s} = 0.119 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.002$, where the central values correspond to $m_H = 300$ GeV, the first errors are statistical and the second ones represent shifts of the central values corresponding to $m_H = 1000$ GeV($+$) and 60 GeV($-$). The predicted mass of the top is smaller than in the recent fits by 4 GeV. The {\it predicted} values of $m_W/m_Z$ and the LEP observables, based on the fitted values of $m_t$ and $\bar{\alpha}_s$, show a weak dependence on $m_H$ and differ by several {\it predicted} standard deviations from the corresponding Born values. The uncertainties of the predicted values and their deviations from the corresponding Born values determine the experimental accuracy required to observe electroweak radiative corrections., Comment: LaTex, 15 pages (including 3 figures as EPS files at the end)

The Born approximation, based on $\bar\alpha \equiv\alpha (m_Z)$ instead of $\alpha$, reproduces all electroweak precision measurements within their $(1\sigma)$ accuracy. The low upper limits for the genuinely electroweak corrections constitute one of the major achievements of LEP. The astonishing smallness of these corrections results from the cancellation of a large positive contribution from the heavy top quark and large negative contributions from all other virtual particles.
