58. Chenguodaite (Ag9FeTe2S4): a new tellurosulfide mineral from the gold district of East Shandong Peninsula, China.

Abstract

Chenguodaite, approved by IMA-CNMMN (2004-042a), was discovered in the Bunan quartz vein-type gold deposit in the gold district of East Shandong Peninsula. The mineral occurs in high grade Au-Ag-Cu ores, coexisting with galena, chalcopyrite, hessite, electrum, unnamed Ag[sub6]TeS[sub2] and Ag[sub16]FeBiTe[sub3]S[sub8], enclosed and replaced by native silver and acanthite. In the reflected light microscope, the mineral has light gray color, indistinguishable anistropism and hardness around 2-3. The color indices of chenguodaite relative to ICE C illuminator are: x=0.3027, y=0.3076, Y=25.78%, λ[subd]=474 nm, Pe=3.68%, similar to those of canfieldite. The average chemical composition from 16 microprobe analyses is Ag[sub8.97]Fe[sub1.00]Te[sub1.99]S[sub4.04], idealized to Ag[sub9]FeTe[sub2]S[sub4]. The polycrystalline X-ray diffraction of chenguodaite by Gandolfi camera and synchrotron oscillation photography results in 67 reflections with the 12 strongest being (relative intensity in bracket): 6.742(69), 6.416(39), 5.951(33), 3.265(100), 2.981(24), 2.649(22), 2.25(24), 2.1 88(71), 2.1 42(22), 2.123(31), 2.044(23), 1.949(33), which are indexed to a primitive orthorhombic cell with a=12.769 (2) Å, b= 14.814(2) Å, c= 16.233 (1) Å, V= 3070.6 ų, Z= 9, Dcal.=6.85 g/cm³. Abstract

A new powder diffractometer for the Photon Factory was designed and constructed in 1986. Its performance has been confirmed as follows: (1) it is capable of determining the wavelength of the Cu K edge as 1.380619 ± 0.000012 A using NBS standard Si powder 640b, while the reported one is 1.38059 A; (2) the accuracy of monitoring the incident beam intensity was ± 0.2 %, which was estimated by the normalized integrated intensity; (3) the angle resolution of diffraction lines was comparable with that of SSRL; and (4) the sum of three Gaussians was the best profile function fitted for lines from NBS standard Si powder 640b. 62. Martensitic Transformation of Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga Single Crystal Observed by Synchrotron Radiation White X-Ray Diffraction

Abstract

A Heusler-type Ni2.18Mn0.82Ga single crystal shows a shape memory effect. It makes a thermo-elastic martensitic transformation at around 340 K, which is coincident with a Curie temperature. We made a synchrotron radiation white X-ray diffraction of the single crystal by changing the temperature from 400 K to 103 K. We observed the change of Laue spots following the transformation. As a result of experiment, the single crystal shows one cubic Heusler structure at 400 K. The direction of the crystal growth is along cubic [010] direction. In the process of decreasing temperature, many tetragonal structures with small volume of different axial direction become to appear. At room temperature the transformation almost finishes and two tetragonal Heusler structures which are twin each other remain. One of them is nearly the same as the structure at the beginning room temperature. The direction of the crystal growth is [010] of this tetragonal structure. Abstract

EXAFS spectra for Fe, Co, Ni K-edges were successfully measured under high pressure conditions using a combination of a set of normal 1/8 carat diamond anvils, synchrotron radiation and a scintillation counter. A newly developed motor controlled goniometer stage was used for adjusting the position of a miniature diamond anvil cell. On the measurement of Cr and Mn spectra, specially designed thinner diamond anvil was necessary. EXAFS analysis of bis(dimethylglyoximato)nickel(II) at pressures from 1 atm to 5.6 GPa was made. more...

64. Spectro-Diffractometry for Chemical-State Analysis Based on In-Advance Simulations

Abstract

We performed an in-advance simulation and experiments involving resonant X-ray powder diffraction with the incident X-ray energy being near to the absorption edge of a particular element in order to distinguish two chemical states of that element based on the principle of spectro-diffractometry. According to the simulation, we found reflections that are relatively sensitive to the exchange of the two anomalous scattering factors (f′) of the specified element at two crystallographic sites. The simulation and experiment results demonstrated that it is possible to obtain f′ curves for the two chemical states by measuring only a few peaks that are sensitive to f′ without greatly increasing the refinement errors, and that the way of selecting the peaks greatly influence the results. In other words, in-advance simulations are very important in this method. This method may make it possible to obtain nearly the same result in one-tenth machine time, and, moreover, to obtain site-selective XANES for powder samples using limited machine time. more...

Abstract

The bulk of the comet 81P/Wild 2 ( hereafter Wild 2) samples returned to Earth by the Stardust spacecraft appear to be weakly constructed mixtures of nanometer-scale grains, with occasional much larger ( over 1 micrometer) ferromagnesian silicates, Fe-Ni sulfides, Fe-Ni metal, and accessory phases. The very wide range of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene compositions in comet Wild 2 requires a wide range of formation conditions, probably reflecting very different formation locations in the protoplanetary disk. The restricted compositional ranges of Fe-Ni sulfides, the wide range for silicates, and the absence of hydrous phases indicate that comet Wild 2 experienced little or no aqueous alteration. Abstract

The Stardust spacecraft collected thousands of particles from comet 81P/Wild 2 and returned them to Earth for laboratory study. The preliminary examination of these samples shows that the nonvolatile portion of the comet is an unequilibrated assortment of materials that have both presolar and solar system origin. The comet contains an abundance of silicate grains that are much larger than predictions of interstellar grain models, and many of these are high-temperature minerals that appear to have formed in the inner regions of the solar nebula. Their presence in a comet proves that the formation of the solar system included mixing on the grandest scales. more...
