Abstract

Multiferroics, showing the coexistence of two or more ferroic orderings at room temperature, could harness a revolution in multifunctional devices. However, most of the multiferroic compounds known to date are not magnetically and electrically ordered at ambient conditions, so the discovery of new materials is pivotal to allow the development of the field. In this work, we show that BaFe2O4 is a previously unrecognized room temperature multiferroic. X-ray and neutron diffraction allowed to reveal the polar crystal structure of the compound as well as its antiferromagnetic behavior, confirmed by bulk magnetometry characterizations. Piezo force microscopy and electrical measurements show the polarization to be switchable by the application of an external field, while symmetry analysis and calculations based on density functional theory reveal the improper nature of the ferroelectric component. Considering the present findings, we propose BaFe2O4 as a Bi- and Pb-free model for the search of new advanced multiferroic materials.

Abstract

Background Early start of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in perinatally HIV-1 infected children is the optimal strategy to prevent immunological and clinical deterioration. To date, according to EMA, only 35% of antiretroviral drugs are licenced in children Methods An observational retrospective study investigating the rate and the outcomes of off-label prescription of HAART was conducted on 225 perinatally HIV-1 infected children enrolled in the Italian Register for HIV Infection in Children and followed-up from 2001 to 2018. Results 22.2% (50/225) of included children were receiving an off-label HAART regimen at last check. Only 26% (13/50) of off-label children had an undetectable viral load (VL) before the commencing of the regimen and the 52.0% (26/50) had a CD4 + T lymphocyte percentage > 25%. At last check, during the off label regimen, the 80% (40/50) of patients had an undetectable VL, and 90% (45/50) of them displayed CD4 + T lymphocyte percentage > 25%. The most widely used off-label drugs were: dolutegravir/abacavir/lamivudine (16%; 8/50), emtricitbine/tenofovir disoproxil (22%; 11/50), lopinavir/ritonavir (20%; 10/50) and elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/ tenofovir alafenamide (10%; 10/50). At logistic regression analysis, detectable VL before starting the current HAART regimen was a risk factor for receiving an off-label therapy (OR: 2.41; 95% CI 1.13–5.19; p = 0.024). Moreover, children Conclusion The prescription of an off-label HAART regimen in perinatally HIV-1 infected children was common, in particular in children with detectable VL despite previous HAART and in younger children, especially those receiving their first regimen. Our data suggest similar proportions of virological and immunological successes at last check among children receiving off-label or on-label HAART. Larger studies are needed to better clarify efficacy and safety of off-label HAART regimens in children, in order to allow the enlargement of on-label prescription in children.

Abstract

The layered-ruthenate family of materials possess an intricate interplay of structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom that yields a plethora of delicately balanced ground states. This is exemplified by Ca3Ru2O7, which hosts a coupled transition in which the lattice parameters jump, the Fermi surface partially gaps and the spins undergo a 90∘ in-plane reorientation. Here, we show how the transition is driven by a lattice strain that tunes the electronic bandwidth. We apply uniaxial stress to single crystals of Ca3Ru2O7, using neutron and resonant x-ray scattering to simultaneously probe the structural and magnetic responses. These measurements demonstrate that the transition can be driven by externally induced strain, stimulating the development of a theoretical model in which an internal strain is generated self-consistently to lower the electronic energy. We understand the strain to act by modifying tilts and rotations of the RuO6 octahedra, which directly influences the nearest-neighbour hopping. Our results offer a blueprint for uncovering the driving force behind coupled phase transitions, as well as a route to controlling them. Ca3Ru2O7 is a layered ruthenate, which undergoes a spin-reorientation transition where the spins rotate 90 degrees between two anti-ferromagnetic states. Despite extensive study, the driver of this transition has proved elusive. Here, using neutron and resonant x-ray scattering, Dashwood et al. show that this transition is driven by lattice strain. Abstract

Neutron diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been used to analyze the magnetic structure in the S = 1 2 kagome antiferromagnet CdCu 3 ( OH ) 6 ( NO 3 ) 2 ⋅ H 2 O . Below the magnetic ordering temperature T N ≃ 4 K , magnetic Bragg reflections at (101) and (100) were found in the neutron diffraction pattern, which suggests a q = 0 magnetic structure. Furthermore, the vector spin chirality for the q = 0 structure was successfully identified from the internal field direction obtained by the 14 N -NMR measurement, previous magnetization measurements, and magnetic symmetry analysis. Our findings point to a chirality-ordered magnetic structure with negative vector chirality and ⟨ 100 ⟩ anisotropy.

82. Origin of the large ferroelectric polarization enhancement under high pressure for multiferroic DyMnO3 studied by polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction

Abstract

The multiferroic perovskite rare earth manganites RMnO3 (R=Dy, Tb, Gd) are known as multiferroics exhibiting pressure-induced gigantic ferroelectric polarization. In this study, we have investigated the magnetic orderings in the pressure-induced phases for DyMnO3, by neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) experiments up to 8.0 GPa. The magnetic ordering for Mn spins changes from the incommensurate bc-cycloid to the commensurate collinear E-type structure with kMn=0,12,0 above 4.0 GPa, which is concomitant with the appearance of a giant ferroelectric polarization. The magnetic ordering for the Dy spins has been determined to be a noncollinear spin structure with a and b spin components and kDy=(0,12,0) for the low- and high-pressure phases. The magnetic field along the a axis, Ha, affects the Dy ordering, which is seen in the changes in the k vector from kDy=(0,12,0) in Ha≤3T to kDy=(0,0,0) in Ha≥3T. Considering the lattice distortion generated by the determined magnetic orderings through the exchange striction mechanism, we conclude that the exchange striction for rare earth and Mn bonds, which is added to the uniform polarization generated by the E-type Mn ordering, is strongly related to the significant magnetic field enhancement of ferroelectric polarization in the high-pressure phase of the rare earth manganites.

Abstract

We investigate the temperature evolution of the magnetic structure of V1/3NbS2 using neutron diffraction techniques. We find that V1/3NbS2 has two propagation vectors: k0 = (0, 0, 0) and k1 = (0, 0, 1/3 ). The k0 vector can be associated with an antiferromagnetic ordering of in-plane moments with a refined value of 0.90(5)μB, and k1 can be associated with moments along the c axis in an up-down-down configuration with refined values of 1.21(12)μB and 0.61(6)μB. Both k0 and k1 magnetic components couple with an out-of-plane ferromagnetic moment consistent with magnetization data. Furthermore, single-crystal neutron diffraction shows evidence of diffuse magnetic scattering between the (010) and (01±1/3 ) Bragg peaks. We also characterize the field and temperature evolution of the magnetic structure in V1/3NbS2 by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The dc susceptibility measurements give an antiferromagnetic transition temperature of TN = 50 K, and the field scans reveal that the moment does not saturate at magnetic fields up to 100 kOe.

Abstract

The low-temperature structure of Bi0.68Ca0.32MnO3 has been solved from electron and neutron diffraction data. The quantitative simultaneous refinement indicates an ordering of the Mn cations in a "stripe/chess"-like pattern. The ordering is accompanied by the formation of short Mn - Mn distances and the rearrangement of the Mn - O bonds indicating the development of complex extended "orbital molecules."The primary order parameter breaks inversion symmetry and allows the generation of a spontaneous electrical polarization as the secondary order parameter. The neutron data at low temperature indicate the coexistence of a pseudo-CE long-range-ordered structure with a strongly reduced moment and short-range ferromagnetic correlations. These results indicate an intricate competition between the charge, orbital, and magnetic degrees of freedom and the Bi3+ stereoactivity in this manganite system.

Abstract

Background The cancer-cell–killing property of atezolizumab may be enhanced by the blockade of vascular endothelial growth factor–mediated immunosuppression with bevacizumab. This open-label, phase 3 study evaluated atezolizumab plus bevacizumab plus chemotherapy in patients with metastatic nonsquamous non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who had not previously received chemotherapy. Methods We randomly assigned patients to receive atezolizumab plus carboplatin plus paclitaxel (ACP), bevacizumab plus carboplatin plus paclitaxel (BCP), or atezolizumab plus BCP (ABCP) every 3 weeks for four or six cycles, followed by maintenance therapy with atezolizumab, bevacizumab, or both. The two primary end points were investigator-assessed progression-free survival both among patients in the intention-to-treat population who had a wild-type genotype (WT population; patients with EGFR or ALK genetic alterations were excluded) and among patients in the WT population who had high expression of an effector T-cell (Teff) gene signature in the tumor (Teff-high WT population) and overall survival in the WT population. The ABCP group was compared with the BCP group before the ACP group was compared with the BCP group. Results In the WT population, 356 patients were assigned to the ABCP group, and 336 to the BCP group.
