Abstract

The ability to selectively redirect specific wavelengths of light has attracted a lot attention for photonic crystal materials. Presently, there is a wealth of research relating to the fabrication and application of photonic crystal materials. There are a number of structures that fall into the category of a photonic crystal; 1D, 2D, and 3D ordered structures can qualify as a photonic crystal, provided there exists ordered repeating lattices of dielectric material with a sufficient refractive index contrast. The optical responses of these structures, namely the associated photonic bandgap or stopband, are of particular interest for any application involving light. The sensitivity of the photonic bandgap to changes in lattice size or refractive index composition creates the possibility for accurate optical sensors. Optical phenomena involving reduced group velocity at wavelengths on the edge of the photonic bandgap are commonly exploited for photocatalytic applications. The inherent reflectivity of the photonic bandgap has created applications in optical waveguides or as solar cell reflector layers. There are countless examples of research attempting to exploit these facets of photonic crystal behavior for improved material design. Here, the role of photonic crystals is reviewed across a wide variety of disciplines; cataloging the ways in which these structures have enhanced specific applications. Abstract

By forming anatase TiO2 inverse opals by infiltration of an opal photonic crystal, we demonstrate that the optical response and angle-resolved blue-shift of the band-gap of the inverse opal structure are defined by a particular three-dimensional structure of the infilled voids. The optical structure of TiO2 inverse opals usually displays significant deviation from its physical structure and from the theoretically predicted position of the photonic band-gap. Following rigorous structural characterization of the parent opal template and TiO2 inverse opals, alternative explanations for the signature of optical transmission through inverse opals are proposed. These approaches posit that, for light-matter interaction, an inverse opal is not precisely the inverse of an opal. Accurate parameters for the structure and material properties can be obtained by invoking a Bragg FCC selection rule-forbidden (-211) plane, which is not a realistic model for diffraction in the IO. Alternatively, by assuming optical interactions with just the periodic arrangement of tetrahedral filled interstitial sites in the structure of the inverse opal, a complete reconciliation with the spectral blue-shift with the angle, photonic band gap, and material parameters is obtained when a reduced unit cell is defined based on interstitial void filling. The analysis suggests a reduced interplanar spacing (d = 1 / √ 3 D, for pore diameter D), based on the actual structure of an inverse opal in general, rather than a definition based on the inverse of an FCC packed opal. This approach provides an accurate and general description for predicting the spectral response and material parameters of ordered inverse opal photonic crystal materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The SmartVista is dedicated to develop a personalized self-powered smart multi-modal vital sign monitoring wearable patch that is seamlessly integrated with the skin with multi-fold increased sensor accuracy. We are investigating one- and two-dimensional (1D/2D) nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes (CNTs), silver nanowires (Ag NWs), and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) sheets, to develop ultra-sensitive and highly-stretchable skin-like biosensors used for the monitoring of health-related physiological body signals. Both theoretical and experimental studies are on-going for the optimization of sensor’s design and performance. Furthermore, to ensure autonomy of the smart sensor, 3D printable battery powered by energy harvesting module is integrated on a single flexible device platform. For energy harvesting, thermoelectric generator (TEG) modules are being developed to harvest power from the body heat and temperature gradient. The entire system will be powered by a 3D printed battery, which reduces the battery form factor significantly and allows for drastic system miniaturization that is crucial for wearables. The present wearable and implantable autonomous sensing device has significant potential to be employed for doctor – patient mobile health monitoring system.

Abstract

It gives me great pleasure to write to you for the first time since becoming ECS President. I assumed the role following the 245th ECS Meeting in San Francisco, CA, which I certainly hope you attended. That amazing event featured 49 symposia with 439 sessions presenting more than 2,290 talks, 3,022 abstracts, and 701 posters by authors from 68 countries. Of these, 575 were invited talks, 25 ECS award and keynote talks, and 1,240 student abstracts, 842 oral talks, and 388 posters! If you were unable to attend, complete coverage of the meeting's highlights and key moments is forthcoming in the next edition of Interface.
