Search

We report the results of a search for the neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay (0$\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo, using the NEMO-3 detector to reconstruct the full topology of the final state events. With an exposure of 34.7 kg.y, no evidence for the 0$\nu\beta\beta$ signal has been found, yielding a limit for the light Majorana neutrino mass mechanism of $T_{1/2}(0\nu\beta\beta)>1.1 \times 10^{24}$ years (90% C.L.) once both statistical and systematic uncertainties are taken into account. Depending on the Nuclear Matrix Elements this corresponds to an upper limit on the Majorana effective neutrino mass of $< m_{\nu} > < 0.3-0.9$ eV (90% C.L.). Constraints on other lepton number violating mechanisms of 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decays are also given. Searching for high-energy double electron events in all suitable sources of the detector, no event in the energy region [3.2-10] MeV is observed for an exposure of 47 kg.y.

The 0$^+_2$ state in $^{34}$Si has been populated at the {\sc Ganil/Lise3} facility through the $\beta$-decay of a newly discovered 1$^+$ isomer in $^{34}$Al of 26(1) ms half-life. The simultaneous detection of $e^+e^-$ pairs allowed the determination of the excitation energy E(0$^+_2$)=2719(3) keV and the half-life T$_{1/2}$=19.4(7) ns, from which an electric monopole strength of $\rho^2$(E0)=13.0(0.9)$\times10^{-3}$ was deduced. The 2$^+_1$ state is observed to decay both to the 0$^+_1$ ground state and to the newly observed 0$^+_2$ state (via a 607(2) keV transition) with a ratio R(2$^+_1$$\rightarrow0^+_1/2^+_1$$\rightarrow0^+_2$)=1380(717). Gathering all information, a weak mixing with the 0$^+_1$ and a large deformation parameter of $\beta$=0.29(4) are found for the 0$^+_2$ state, in good agreement with shell model calculations using a new {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction allowing \textit{np-nh} excitations across the N=20 shell gap., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2$^+$ state is a $\pi(2p-2h)$ 0$^{+}$ state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Comparison with theoretical calculations indicates a pure proton intruder configuration and the deduced low-lying structure of this key nucleus suggests a possible shape coexistence scenario involving a highly deformed state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

The structure of the $^{44}$S nucleus has been studied at GANIL through the one proton knock-out reaction from a $^{45}$Cl secondary beam at 42 A$\cdot$MeV. The $\gamma$ rays following the de-excitation of $^{44}$S were detected in flight using the 70 BaF${_2}$ detectors of the Ch\^{a}teau de Cristal array. An exhaustive $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence analysis allowed an unambiguous construction of the level scheme up to an excitation energy of 3301 keV. The existence of the spherical 2$^+_2$ state is confirmed and three new $\gamma$-ray transitions connecting the prolate deformed 2$^+_1$ level were observed. Comparison of the experimental results to shell model calculations further supports a prolate and spherical shape coexistence with a large mixing of states built on the ground state band in $^{44}$S., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

We present the state-of-the art shell model calculations in a large model space (pf for protons, fpgd for neutrons), which allow to study simultaneously excitations across the Z=28 and N=50 shell gaps. We explore the region in the vicinity of 78Ni, being a subject of intense experimental investigations. Our calculations account correctly for the known low lying excited states in this region, including those which may correspond to cross-shell excitations. We observe the minimum of the N=50 mass gap at Z=32 consistent with experimental data and its further increase towards Z=28, indicating a robustness of the N=50 gap in 78Ni. The evolution of N=50 gap along the nickel chain is shown to bear similarities with what is know in oxygen and calcium chains, providing a new opportunity for the studies of 3-body monopole effects in medium mass nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 5 fugures

We describe the "islands of inversion" that occur when approaching the neutron drip line around the magic numbers N=20, N=28 and N=40 in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model in very large valence spaces. We explain these configuration inversions (and the associated shape transitions) as the result of the competition between the spherical mean field (monopole) which favors magicity and the correlations (multipole) which favor deformed intruder states. The lightest Xenon isotopes are studied in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM). The valence space comprises all the orbits lying between the magic closures N=Z=50 and N=Z=82. The calculations produce collective deformed structures of triaxial nature that encompass nicely the known experimental data. Predictions are made for the (still unknown) N=Z nucleus 108-Xe. The results are interpreted in terms of the competition between the quadrupole correlations enhanced by the pseudo-SU(3) structure of the positive parity orbits and the pairing correlations brought in by the 0h11/2 orbit. We have studied as well the effect of the excitations from the 100-Sn core on our predictions. We show that the backbending in this region is due to the alignment of two particles in the 0h11/2 orbit. In the N=Z case, one neutron and one proton align to J=11 and T=0. In 110-Xe and 112-Xe the alignment begins in the J=10 T=1 channel and it is dominantly of neutron neutron type. Approaching the band termination the alignment of a neutron and a proton to J=11 and T=0 takes over. In a more academic mood, we have explored the role of the isovector and isoscalar pairing correlations on the structure on the yrast bands of 108-Xe and 110-Xe and examined the role of the isovector and isoscalar pairing condensates in these N~Z nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

The structure of $^{44}$S has been studied using delayed $\gamma$ and electron spectroscopy at \textsc{ganil}. The decay rates of the 0$^+_2$ isomeric state to the 2$^+_1$ and 0$^+_1$ states have been measured for the first time, leading to a reduced transition probability B(E2~:~2$^{+}_1$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_2)$= 8.4(26)~e$^2$fm$^4$ and a monopole strength $\rho^2$(E0~:~0$^{+}_2$$\rightarrow$0$^{+}_1)$ =~8.7(7)$\times$10$^{-3}$. We explore the influence of the deformation on the nuclear matrix elements of the neutrinoless double beta decay (NME), concluding that the difference in deformation -or more generally in the amount of quadrupole correlations- between parent and grand daughter nuclei quenches strongly the decay. We correlate these differences with the seniority structure of the nuclear wave functions. In this context, we examine the present discrepancies between the NME's obtained in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model and the Quasiparticle RPA. We surmise that part of the discrepancy can be due to the limitations of the spherical QRPA in treating nuclei which have strong quadrupole correlations. We present a quantitative study of the role played by different components characterizing the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the evolution of the nuclear shell structure. It is based on the spin-tensor decomposition of an effective two-body shell-model interaction and the subsequent study of effective single-particle energy variations in a series of isotopes or isotones. The technique allows to separate unambiguously contributions of the central, vector and tensor components of the realistic effective interaction. We show that while the global variation of the single-particle energies is due to the central component of the effective interaction, the characteristic behavior of spin-orbit partners, noticed recently, is mainly due to its tensor part. Based on the analysis of a well-fitted realistic interaction in sdpf-shell model space, we analyze in detail the role played by the different terms in the formation and/or disappearance of N=16, N=20 and N=28 shell gaps in neutron-rich nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Excited states of $^{38}_{17}$Cl$_{21}$ were populated in grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of $^{36}_{16}$S$_{20}$ ions of energy 215 MeV with a $^{208}_{82}$Pb$_{126}$ target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA $\gamma$-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via $\gamma$-ray emission. A level scheme for $^{38}$Cl is presented with tentative spin and parity assignments. We discuss the variation of the nuclear matrix element (NME) for the neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{76}$Ge when the wave functions are constrained to reproduce the experimental occupancies of the two nuclei involved in the transition. In the Interacting Shell Model description the value of the NME is enhanced about 15% compared to previous calculations, whereas in the QRPA the NME's are reduced by 20%-30%. This diminishes the discrepancies between both approaches. In addition, we discuss effect of the short range correlations on the NME in the light of the recently proposed parametrizations based on a consistent renormalization of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ transition operator., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

We have performed shell-model calculations of the half-lives and neutron-branching probabilities of the r-process waiting point nuclei at the magic neutron number N=82. These new calculations use a larger model space than previous shell model studies and an improved residual interaction which is adjusted to recent spectroscopic data around A=130. Our shell-model results give a good account of all experimentally known half-lives and $Q_\beta$-values for the N=82 r-process waiting point nuclei. Our half-life predictions for the N=82 nuclei with Z=42--46 agree well with recent estimates based in the energy-density functional method.

In this talk I will review the "state of the art" of the calculations of the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of the neutrinoless double beta decays for the nuclei 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 124Sn, 128Te, 130Te and 136Xe in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM), and compare them with the NME's obtained using the Quasi-particle RPA approach (QRPA). I will also discuss the effect of the competition between the pairing and quadrupole correlations in the value of these NME's. In this article we analyze the nuclear matrix elements (NME) of the neutrinoless double beta decays of the nuclei 48-Ca, 76-Ge, 82-Se, 124-Sn, 130-Te and 136-Xe in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model (ISM). We study the relative value of the different contributions to them, such as higher order terms in the nuclear current, finite nuclear size effects and short range correlations, as well as their evolution with the maximum seniority permitted in the wave functions. We discuss also the build-up of the NME's as a function of the distance between the decaying neutrons. The neutron rich isotopes with Z<20, in particular those with neutron numbers around N=28,have been at the focus of a lot experimental and theoretical scrutiny during the last few years.Shell model calculations using the effective interaction SDPF-NR, were able to predictor to explain most of the properties featured by these nuclei. Prominent among them is the disappearance of the N=28 shell closure for Z<=16. We have incorporated to SDPF-NR some modifications, either on purely theoretical grounds or guided by new experimental information. The proposed interaction, SDPF-U, contains USD as its sd-shell part and KB3G as its pf-shell-part. We study in this letter the behavior of the neutrinoless double beta decay nuclear matrix elements (NME's) in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model. We analize them in terms of the total angular momentum of the decaying neutron pair and as a function of the seniority truncations in the nuclear wave functions. This point of view turns out to be very adequate to gauge the accuracy of the NME's predicted by different nuclear structure models. In addition, it gives back the due protagonism in this process to the pairing interaction, the interaction which is responsible for the very existence of double beta decay emitters. We show that low seniority approximations, comparable to those implicit in the quasiparticle RPA in an spherical basis, tend to overestimate the values of the NME's in several decays., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, added discussions

In this article, we analyze some nuclear structure aspects of the neutrinoless double beta decay nuclear matrix elements (NME), in the framework of the Interacting Shell Model. We give results for the decays of 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 124Sn, 128Te, 130Te, and 136Xe, using improved effective interactions and valence spaces. We examine the dependence of the NME's on the effective interaction and the valence space, and analyze the effects of the short range correlations and the finite size of the nucleon. The energies of the excited states in very neutron-rich $^{42}$Si and $^{41,43}$P have been measured using in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy from the fragmentation of secondary beams of $^{42,44}$S at 39 A.MeV. The low 2$^+$ energy of $^{42}$Si, 770(19) keV, together with the level schemes of $^{41,43}$P provide evidence for the disappearance of the Z=14 and N=28 spherical shell closures, which is ascribed mainly to the action of proton-neutron tensor forces. Large scale shell model calculations, with dimensions reaching 10**9, are carried out to describe the recently observed deformed (ND) and superdeformed (SD) bands based on the first and second excited 0+ states of 40-Ca at 3.35-MeV and 5.21-MeV respectively. A valence space comprising two major oscillator shells, sd and pf, can accommodate most of the relevant degrees of freedom of this problem. The ND band is dominated by configurations with four particles promoted to the pf-shell (4p-4h in short). The SD band by 8p-8h configurations. The ground state of 40-Ca is strongly correlated, but the closed shell still amounts to 65%. The energies of the bands are very well reproduced by the calculations. The out-band transitions connecting the SD band with other states are very small and depend on the details of the mixing among the different np-nh configurations, in spite of that, the calculation describes them reasonably. For the in-band transition probabilities along the SD band, we predict a fairly constant transition quadrupole moment Q_0(t)~170 e fm**2 up to J=10, that decreases toward the higher spins. We submit also that the J=8 states of the deformed and superdeformed band are maximally mixed., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We have calculated the M1 strength distributions in the A=36,38 argon isotopes within large-scale shell model studies which consider valence nucleons in the sd and pf shells. While the M1 strength in 36Ar is well reproduced within the sd shell, the experimentally observed strong fragmentation of the M1 strength in 38Ar requires configuration mixing between the sd and the pf shells adding to our understanding of correlations across the N=20 shell gap., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

In an effort to understand the magical status of N=32 and N=34 at the very neutron rich edge, experiments have been carried out in the Titanium isotopes up to A=56. The measured staggering of the B(E2)'s is not reproduced by the shell model calculations using the best effective interactions. We argue that this may be related to the choice of the isovector effective charge and to the value of the N=34 neutron gap., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures

Large scale shell model calculations in two major oscillator shells (sd and pf) describe simultaneously the super-deformed excited band of 36Ar and its low-lying states of dominant sd character. In addition, several two particle two hole states and a side band of negative parity are also well reproduced. We explain the appearance of the super-deformed band at such low excitation energy as a consequence of the very large correlation energy of the configurations with many particles and many holes (np-nh) relative to the normal filling of the spherical mean field orbits (0p-0h). We study the mechanism of mixing between these different configurations, to understand why the super-deformed band survives and how it finally decays into the low-lying sd-dominated states via the indirect mixing of the 0p-0h and 4p-4h configurations., Comment: 4 pages 5 figures, revtex4, revised version, minor changes

The last decade has witnessed both quantitative and qualitative progresses in Shell Model studies, which have resulted in remarkable gains in our understanding of the structure of the nucleus. Indeed, it is now possible to diagonalize matrices in determinantal spaces of dimensionality up to 10^9 using the Lanczos tridiagonal construction, whose formal and numerical aspects we will analyze. Besides, many new approximation methods have been developed in order to overcome the dimensionality limitations. Furthermore, new effective nucleon-nucleon interactions have been constructed that contain both two and three-body contributions. The former are derived from realistic potentials (i.e., consistent with two nucleon data). The latter incorporate the pure monopole terms necessary to correct the bad saturation and shell-formation properties of the realistic two-body forces. This combination appears to solve a number of hitherto puzzling problems. In the present review we will concentrate on those results which illustrate the global features of the approach: the universality of the effective interaction and the capacity of the Shell Model to describe simultaneously all the manifestations of the nuclear dynamics either of single particle or collective nature. We will also treat in some detail the problems associated with rotational motion, the origin of quenching of the Gamow Teller transitions, the double beta-decays, the effect of isospin non conserving nuclear forces, and the specificities of the very neutron rich nuclei. Many other calculations--that appear to have ``merely'' spectroscopic interest--are touched upon briefly, although we are fully aware that much of the credibility of the Shell Model rests on them., Comment: 64 pages, 60 figures

Multi-nucleon transfer reactions in $^{40}$Ca+$^{208}$Pb have been studied at several bombarding energies close to the Coulomb barrier. Light reaction products have been identified in mass and charge with a time-of-flight spectrometer. The energy spectra of the inclusive two neutron pick-up channel show a population in a narrow region of excitation energies which corresponds to the predicted energy of pairing vibration states in $^{42}$Ca., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted in EPJA

We calculate the B(E2) strength in 68Ni and other nickel isotopes using several theoretical approaches. We find that in 68Ni the gamma transition to the first 2+ state exhausts only a fraction of the total B(E2) strength, which is mainly collected in excited states around 5 MeV. This effect is sensitive to the energy splitting between the fp shell and the g_{9/2}orbital. We argue that the small experimental B(E2) value is not strong evidence for the double-magic character of 68Ni., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The existence of n-particle n-hole deformed yrare bands in the N=28 isotones is explored using full pf-shell diagonalizations and the Lanczos Strength Function method. We find different 2p-2h and 4p-4h collective bands that, when allowed to mix, more often disappear. Only the 2p-2h yrare band in Cr-52 and the 4p-4h yrare band in Ni-56 survive, and only in this latter case, due to the reduced density of 2p-2h states, can the band be seen as a gamma-cascade.

The superdeformed band, recently discovered in Ca-40 is analysed in an spherical shell model context. Two major oscillator shells, sd and pf are necessary to describe it. The yrast band of the fixed 8p-8h configuration fits extremely well with the experimental energies and transition rates of the superdeformed band. The 4p-4h configuration generates a normally deformed band plus a gamma-band pattern, both are also present in the experimental data., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The first-forbidden beta-decay of 17Ne into the 'halo' state J=1/2+ of 17F presents one of the largest measured asymmetries for mirror beta-decay feeding bound final states. This asymmetry is studied in the framework of the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum (SMEC). The spatial extent of single particle orbits is constrained by the proton capture cross-section 16O(p,gamma)17F calculated in SMEC . This allows to estimate the mirror symmetry breaking in 17F/17O and 17Ne/17N nuclei., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures Misprints corrected

A highly-deformed rotational band has been identified in the N=Z nucleus 36Ar. At high spin the band is observed to its presumed termination at I=16+, while at low spin it has been firmly linked to previously known states in 36Ar. Spins, parities, and absolute excitation energies have thus been determined throughout the band. Lifetime measurements establish a large low-spin quadrupole deformation (beta_2=0.46+-0.03) and indicate a decreasing collectivity as the band termination is approached. With effectively complete spectroscopic information and a valence space large enough for significant collectivity to develop, yet small enough to be meaningfully approached from the shell model perspective, this rotational band in 36Ar provides many exciting opportunities to test and compare complementary models of collective motion in nuclei., Comment: Invited talk at "High Spin Physics 2001", see http://www.fuw.edu.pl/~hs2001/, to be published in Acta Physica Polonica B

Isotope shifts in the nuclear charge radius of even and odd calcium isotopes are calculated within the nuclear shell model. The model space includes all configurations of nucleons in the $2s, 1d_{3/2}, 1f_{7/2}, {\rm and} ~2p_{3/2}$ orbits. The shell model describes well the energies of the intruder states in Sc and Ca, as well as the energies of the low-lying $2^+$ and $3^-$ states in the even Ca isotopes. The characteristic features of the isotope shifts, the parabolic dependence on $A$ and the prominent odd-even staggering, are well reproduced by the model. These features are related to the partial breakdown of the $Z = 20$ shell closure caused by promotion, due to the neutron-proton interaction, of the $ds$ shell protons into the $fp$ shell., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures included

Shell model calculations in the full pf-shell are carried out for the A=50, 51 and 52 isobars. The most frequently used effective interactions for the pf-shell, KB3 and FPD6 are revisited and their behaviour at the N=28 and Z=28 closures examined. Cures to their -relatively minor- defaults are proposed, and a new mass dependent version called KB3G is released. Energy spectra, electromagnetic transitions and moments as well as beta decay properties are computed and compared with the experiment and with the results of the earlier interactions. A high quality description is achieved. We discuss the present status of the description of the structure of the very neutron rich nuclei, in the framework of modern large scale shell model calculations. Particular attention is paid to the interaction related issues, as well as to the problems of the shell model approach at the neutron drip line. We present detailed results for nuclei around N=20 and, more briefly, we discuss some salient features of the regions close to N=8, 28 and 40. We present shell model calculations of both the structure of 17F and the reactions 16O(p,gamma)17F, 16O(p,p)16O. We use the ZBM interaction which provides a good description of the properties of 16O and neighbouring nuclei and, in particular it takes account for the complicated correlations in coexisting low-lying states of 16O., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We study here the onset of thermal equilibrium affecting the lifetimes of 26Al and 34Cl nuclei within a hot astrophysical photon gas. The 26Al isotope is of prime interest for gamma ray astronomy with the observation of its delayed (t_1\2=0.74 My) 1.809MeV gamma-ray line. Its nucleosynthesis is complicated by the presence of a short lived (t_1\2=6.34s) spin isomer. A similar configuration is found in 34Cl where the decay of its isomer (34mCl, t_1\2=32m) is followed by delayed gamma-ray emission with characteristic energies. The lifetimes of such nuclei are reduced at high temperature by the thermal population of shorter lived levels. However, thermal equilibrium within 26Al and 34Cl levels is delayed by the presence of the isomer. We study here the transition to thermal equilibrium where branching ratios for radiative transitions are needed in order to calculate lifetimes. On the basis of shell model simulations, it is conjectured that the Lanczos construction at fixed quantum numbers defines---within fluctuations and behaviour very near the origin---smooth canonical matrices whose forms depend on the rank of the Hamiltonian, dimensionality of the vector space, and second and third moments. A framework emerges that amounts to a general Anderson model capable of dealing with ground state properties and strength functions. The smooth forms imply binomial level densities. A simplified approach to canonical thermodynamics is proposed., Comment: 4 pages 6 figures

We apply the realistic shell model which includes the coupling between many-particle (quasi-)bound states and the continuum of one-particle scattering states, called the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum, to the spectroscopy of mirror nuclei: 17F and 17O, as well as to the description of low energy cross section (the astrophysical S-factor) for E1, E2 and M1 components in the capture reaction: 16O(p,gamma)17F. With the same microscopic input we calculate the phase shifts and differential cross-section for the elastic scattering of protons on 16O., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures

Electron capture and beta-decay rates on nuclei in the mass range A=45-65 play an important role in many astrophysical environments. The determination of these rates by large-scale shell model calculations is desirable, but it requires to reproduce the Gamow-Teller strength distributions and spectra of the pf shell nuclei. We show in this paper that large-scale shell model calculations, employing a slightly monopole-corrected version of the wellknown KB3 interaction, fulfill these necessary requirements. In particular, our calculations reproduce the experimentally available GT+ and GT- strength distributions and the nuclear halflives, and describe the nuclear spectra appropriately., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We apply the realistic shell model which includes the coupling between many-particle (quasi-)bound states and the continuum of one-particle scattering states to the spectroscopy of mirror nuclei: $^8$B and $^8$Li, as well as to the description of low energy cross sections (the astrophysical S factors) in the capture reactions:$^7Be(p,\gamma)^8B$ and $^7Li(n,\gamma)^8Li$., Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures

Binding energies and other global properties of nuclei in the middle of the $pf$ shell, such as M1, E2 and Gamow-Teller sum rules, have been obtained using a new Shell Model code (NATHAN) written in quasi-spin formalism and using a $j-j$-coupled basis. An extensive comparison is made with the recently available Shell Model Monte Carlo results using the effective interaction KB3. The binding energies for -nearly- all the $1f_{7/2}$ nuclei are compared with the measured (and extrapolated) results., Comment: 7 pages

Allowed $\beta^+$ branches of very proton-rich $fp$ shell $Tz=-2$ nuclei at the proton drip-line are calculated in the full fp valence space. The $\beta^+$ decay half-lives calculated with the standard quenching factor ($g^{eff}_{A}/g_{A}$)=0.74 are in good agreement with existing experimental data. Detailed branching Gamow-Teller strength are predicted but comparison with experiment is still difficult since, in most cases, spectroscopic information is not yet available.

We describe the properties of the neutron rich nuclei around N=28 in the shell mode framework. The valence space comprises the $sd$ shell for protons an the $pf$ shell for neutrons without any restriction. Good agreement is found with the available experimental data. The N=28 shell closure, even if eroded due to the large neutron excess, persists. The calculations predict that $^{40}$S and $^{42}$S are deformed with $\beta=0.29 $ and $\beta=0.32$ respectively., Comment: 17 pages and 19 figures, LateX, RevTeX

The collective yrast band and the high spin states of the nucleus 50Cr are studied using the spherical shell model and the HFB method. The two descriptions lead to nearly the same values for the relevant observables. A first backbending is predicted at I=10\hbar corresponding to a collective to non-collective transition. At I=16\hbar a second backbending occurs, associated to a configuration change that can also be interpreted as an spherical to triaxial transition., Comment: ReVTeX v 3.0 epsf.sty, 5 pages, 5 figures included. The lifetimes for the double beta decays of $^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se and $^{136}$Xe are calculated using very large shell model spaces. The two neutrino matrix elements obtained are in good agreement with the present experimental data. For $<1$ eV we predict the following upper bounds to the half-lives for the neutrinoless mode: $T^{(0\nu)}_{1/2}(Ge) > 1.85\,10^{25} yr.$, $T^{(0\nu)}_{1/2}(Se) > 2.36\,10^{24} yr.$ and $T^{(0\nu)}_{1/2}(Xe) > 1.21\,10^{25} yr$. These results are the first from a new generation of Shell Model calculations reaching O(10$^{8}$) dimensions.
